My Publix had oscar mayer hot dogs advertised as the penny item with the publix hot dogs under the sign. I went to the hot dog section and picked up the oscar mayer brand and it rang up for a penny no problem.

Not sure why I'm entertaining the situation, but Kathy, I don't think she was being rude.

I don't think she was being rude. She was offering to open up a checkout lane just for you so that your coupon shopping experience would be easier. I don't get why you are mad. You were wrong and oversensitive because you knew you were wrong. She probably wasn't even saying that because you were WAY WAY WAY over the limit for the express lane but because you were having issues with your cashier and coupons.

The manager was wayyyy nice. We chatted for at least 10 minutes about coupon shopping. I told him it wasn't "how" she said it, (because she was very smiley-southern) but the message itself. He said, "Well, I will talk to her and tell her "nicely" not to do that again... lol. (That was his irony for the situation...)

Oh, and by the way, Kathy- I am glad that you called! If all of us called for rude people maybe it would make our shopping trips a little more pleasant :)

I think it is kind of rude to lash out about express lanes when someone told a story about a customer service person being rude! I could really care less who uses which lane, so you wouldn't have bothered me at all with 24 items...

When people with a huge cartload are in the express lane I just assume they didn't read the sign or the cashier waved them over.

Who the heck cares? It's called PATIENCE, if you don't have 10 extra minutes to relax and read the covers of some magazines, you have a problem. Find something worthwhile in life to get riled up about, the environment, maybe?

My goodness! I didn't realized I was going to get flammed for writing my experience! And no, I didn't write a check. No one was behind me. Out the of the 24 items, 8 were Gogurt boxes, 8 were shampoos, 3 were Purex... making the majority of my purchases just multiples.

And dang it, I just realized I was there on a Sunday, and forgot to get my penny item! urrghhhh.

Yeah, I understand what you are saying... but as I said, there was no one behind me. What I didn't say was that there were several lines open, all with people, and I went to the express lane unknowingly. It was after I started putting the items on the belt that I realized I was in an express lane and apologized. It wasn't like she had a choice at that point, but I wanted to let her know that I didn't do it on purpose, and I would go to another lane, if necessary. (I know that she wouldn't, as you said.) but wanted to be polite for my mistake.

The irritation was not the cashier, but the customer service person who saw it her job to come over and point out something that was obvious, embarrassing a customer who had already apologized for hitting the wrong isle.

That was what I was irritated about. Ya know?

Sorry, but in general I wish all the checkers would enforce the express line limits. It is so irritating when I have 2 or 3 things and I am waiting for someone to buy more than double the limit. Like anything else, there are exceptions at times, like when there are two express lines and both have no customers-- then the cashier tends to motion someone over. But in general, especially if I have multiple coupons, I wait for a full service line if I am at the limit, and it would never even occur to me to use express if I am way over.

I have said something (nicely) to the cashiers a couple of times, and they say they get in trouble either way-- either the person disregarding the limit gets mad, or the people waiting behind them get mad. It would be nice if they weren't put in that position.

I've gone through the express line with 11 or 12 items and coupons before but come on 24 items!!!!

If I had come up and gotten behind you with a gallon of milk and a pack of diapers you would have certainly gotten a look, First of anger and then of sorrow that you didn't pass first grade math and don't know that 24 is way more than 10.

Let me guess, you wrote a check too.

Just got back from shopping at Publix, and I am a little irritated.

First, I got into an express lane. Since I had 14 items over the 10 count, I apologized and asked if it was okay. (no one was behind me at the time.) She said it's fine and I proceeded to have her check me out. (Obviously, this is not what irritated me...)

Then, they wouldn't double my Gogurt coupons. They were $ .40 off one. The top of the coupon says, "Do not double or triple" but I thought that if it had the 5 in front, the coupon doubled automatically. She went through the effort of suppressing the double auto-response. I asked her why she wasn't allowing it to double, and she said because she has to follow what the coupon says. sigh. I said okay. $3.20 lost.

Here's the kicker. "Carol" the head customer service person, comes over to help bag. She starts speaking. I think she is addressing the cashier. She's not. She's talking to me. "Next time you have a big order, come get me and I will open a register for you." And smiles this huge smile. What? I am confused. Did she just slap my hand for coming through an express lane? No way. I stood there, trying to process that she actually said something to me, and what she had said.

The cashier finishes up, I pay, and before I leave ask her what the lady's name who spoke to me was. There is no way she is getting away with this. I mean, common. There was absolutely no way, no matter how nice you say it, a reason for addressing me for my 24 items in a 10-item-or-less isle. Really.

I called the manager when I arrived home and gave him the low-down. He apologized, and agreed, there was no reason for her to address me.

I feel vindicated. Hey, I love shopping at Publix. I don't want to feel crappy about going in there because of one person. It might be you she politely slaps next time. Nope, it won't happen. You know why? Because I tattled.

So there.

I'm going to drink my coffee now. I've work to do.

Here in Hoover, AL our item was Publix "crispy rice with strawberries" cereal.

Oh yes, my store is in Marietta, East Cobb and they are wonderful!

I happen to know the Asst. Manager at our Publix and she thought they were the beef franks (non kosher) for .01 since that is what they use for all the bbqs etc. When I pointed out they were beef & pork (and I don't) eat pork she went with me to the meat case and looked for a small package of beef franks which did not even have a bar code car. She gave me a package of Ball Park Franks (which were 3.99) for the .01 and I used my $1 off coupon on a package of BOGO Hebrew Nationals. 2 packages of beef franks for $1.51. Thanks for your guidance!

Our store in Atlanta wouldn't let me substitute either.

Either way, it is a good deal. An item for a penny. I love surprises!
