Gotta be my cornbread dressing. Every year I have to buy at least 4 cartons of progresso broth because I never know exactly how much it will take. I just keep adding the broth until patting the dressing feels like spanking a baby's butt. Try it yourself and see if that isn't exactly what the perfect consistency (before baking) feels like. My family all gathers around to get a slap at it. Happy Thanksgiving!
  • Jen

  • letitia
For me it would not be Thanksgiving here in south GA with out my "Grandma Butterbean's" chocolate meringue pie. She raised me so I've grown up with it as one of those items that is just a 'given', always there!
  • Anna Guzman
I'm of Mexican decent so, without tamales or posole it would not be Thanksgiving to me.

  • Kim Lawson
There are sooo many things I could say, but the one thing that really stands out is the SWEET POTATO PUDDIN' that my grandfather used to make. It was one of those recipes that he would put a little of this and a pinch of that, never with any measurements. A few years back, I finally, with his help, came up with the correct measurements so I could make it myself. With the grated sweet potatoes, coconut, raisins, and several more ingredients(lots of sugar and butter) this has to be one of the best recipes EVER!!(The traditional sweet potato casserole with marshmallows is good, but is no comparison to this!)

My grandfather died a couple of years ago and today would have been his 87th birthday. That makes this recipe even more special. If I win, I will share the recipe with you and you can see for yourself what I'm talking about! Is your mouth watering yet??!

  • carrie martiin

  • Catherine
For me, Thanksgiving would not be without my grandmother's turkey salad. And it's not what we have during dinner, but that she makes it extra special for me to have for leftovers on Thanksgiving night.
  • shannon
Everyone in my family requests pumpkin rolls. They are sooo good. It's typically a pumpkin sponge type cake rolled up with cream cheese filling. It's right off the nestle website made with Libby's pumpkin. As for the progresso bread crumbs, I love the italian style crumbs. I just sautee chicken with the crumbs in olive oil and finish it in the oven with fresh lemon slices on top. It is very good and extremely easy.
  • teresa
it would not be thanksgiving w/o my husbands dressing. he got the recipe in a southern living magazine about 20 years ago and we make it every year. we begin by making homemade cornbread the night before and the dressing the morning of. and of course my dad's pecan pie. he passed away 2 years ago, and now i get to make the same recipe. my family loves it, and i have to make my grown son one of his own to take home. i am new to couponing. and i love it.
  • Melissa

  • Beth
    Macaroni and cheese!
  • Jennifer
My absolute favorite is broccoli casserole! Yummy and cheesy goodness :)
  • Tracy
It would certainly have to be my mom's dressing..it has to be in a 13X9 pan and a little dry..... Or wait...maybe its my moms chocolate pound cake from scratch with homemade chocolate icing...its most important that you cook it in an angel food cake pan so that the icing runs over the sides...or oh my goodness...can't forget about the coca cola ham...and don't forget to give a piece to the dog.....but the one dish I could not live without is the incredible unconditional love that my mom gives me everyday
  • Stephanie
My moms carrots - they are so yummy! My hubby does not like carrots so the only time I get them is if my moms cooks them and has us down for supper but I can always count on them for Thanksgiving.
  • Carla
It would not be Thanksgiving without Apple Cinnamon Salad...this is a long-time family favorite that I cannot remember ever not having. Many thanks to Grandma for starting this tradition....
  • Corrie
Homemade rolls...my mom made them for as long as I can remember and I was right beside her as soon as I was big enough to sit on the counter. I got married in January...and guess who's bringing the rolls to this year's gathering?! :)
  • Kathy
    My husband's Grandma's dressing... yum!
  • Loranna
My Thanksgiving is not complete without pie–particularly pumpkin and apple. The apple is the recipe my grandfather used to make, and pumpkin is my husband’s favorite. Even though we’re stuffed after dinner, we can’t be really finished until we’ve eaten pie, though we might take a game break before breaking out the pies!
  • TammynSC
My grandma's dressing! She's gone now :( but my Aunt makes it the same way and I have her recipe.

  • Megan
I have to have mashed potatoes! Can't wait, LOVE them!! Thanks for the great giveaway.
  • iris elliott
Since I am so totally southern, I would have to say I could never image Thanksgiving with dressing (stuffing not in the turkey) and gravy. Even though my Grandma never made good dressing the gravy was able to literally cover a multitude of culinary transgression that were made. My Mom had the best recipe handed down from her Mom. Secret to great dressing is a ton of sage. Now-a-days, my sister makes the dressing with a recipe that includes of things, yellow squash. This Thanksgiving the torch will be passed to my daughter. Traditions a legacy that needs to continue. Thanks Southernsaver for being a lighthouse during a tough economic time.
  • Annamarie
I can't wait for my mother in law's cranberry gelitin with the whipped topping and the pineapple cassarole!

  • Robin W
    My mother's homemade chocolate pies.
  • Elizabeth M.
I almost didn't enter this until I realized I hate a Thanksgiving that doesn't come with my cousin Pat's Sweet Potato pie. I know, you're thinking "Pie, so what." But this pie is light, nay, fluffy with a hint of orange. It's seriously addictive. I am truly considering taking a 3000 mile trip home just to be in the kitchen with her to learn how she makes it. It's over the moon good!

    Elizabeth M.
  • It wouldn't be Thanksgiving for me without my Granny's dressing! All of her daughters have tried to make it like her, but it she just has some type of magic!
  • Paula Rowell
Pumpkin pie with fresh whipped cream!
  • nancy
Southern style collard greens. Though perhaps not a sweet or starch it makes you feel like you are being healthy to some degree even if it is made with a ham bone. It reminds me of my Grandmother and her home cooking.
  • carol
I gotta be honest here, mom passed away a couple of years ago and no one can ever duplicate your mothers cooking and how it tasted. While I still enjoy the holidays with my children and my dad, the taste of the holiday meal will never be the same for me without her cooking it. Holidays are for happy memories though and I have plenty of those. Happy Thanksgiving!!
  • nina
its a tie - turtle pumpkin pie , and tatertot casserole! yum!
  • Natalie
My grandma's recipe for SOUTHERN PECAN PIE. It's a more expensive pie to make, and loaded with fat and calories, but every bite is worth it!
  • Barbara
don't know how or why but our thanksgiving HAS TO HAVE mashed rutabagas.....salted, with a bit of butter.....
  • Sarah R

It would not be Thanksgiving without my mom's homemade mashed potatoes and mac & cheese!
  • Wendy
I must have sweet potato souffle, but not with marshmellows.
  • Connie
It absolutely would not be Thanksgiving without coconut cake and fruit salad. If that sounds old fashioned, it's because those are my Granny's two favorite things and they have been our holiday tradition for generations. We use fresh coconut and put the coconut milk in the cake batter in place of the water. We make 7 minute frosting and grate the coconut meat on top (add powdered sugar to the grated coconut if you like more sweetness). The fruit salad is a combination of fresh and canned fruits with the juice reserved for punch. Delicious, and thrifty.
  • GaMom1983
Sweet potatoe casserole and broccoli casserole! We sometimes change from the traditional turkey to ham or rib roast, but the two constants are always sweet potatoe casserole and broccoli casserole! I couldn't choose which is my favorite, LoL.
  • Candy
It would not be Thanksgiving without Mom's homemade dressing and gravy!

    It's the best!
  • Karey
I can't live without stuffing on Thanksgiving! I love the stuff!

it won't thanksgiving without Pecan Pie or dressing. My granny makes to best dressing. I make it the same as her and hers is always better. • Renee

  • Nisha
I love to have smashed potatos with little bit spicy on thanks giving day.
  • Jennifer
Not being from the south, our traditions are different from here. But 1 item I like to make is candied yams. Canned yams (2 cans) poured into a dish with brown sugar and butter. Bake it till hot and then add marshmallows to the top of it and broil it for a few seconds (watch it). I love these soooo much!
  • Heather
My mom's cornbread dressing. I can't wait for Thursday.
  • Stacey
For me, it would not be thanksgiving without green olives! It has been a family tradition for as long as I can remember.. While the food is being prepared, everyone stands around the table and grazes on olives. My uncle LOVED them and always made it a point to bring a jar or two. He passed away in 1998 and since then its a taboo to forget olives!!
  • Lisa Thornton
Turkey and Dressing!!!! I could eat an entire pan!
  • Jennifer
Wow, that is a hard one! I would have to say, the age old classic, stuffing. My Nana's is the best, with giblet gravy on top, mmm-mmm good!
  • Angela P
Well of course the usuals are a must: Mashed Taters, Green Bean Casserole, pumpkin pie..... But because it is special to my husband I would have to say Creamed Onions (his Mom ued to make them). That reminds me.... I better add that to my shopping list!
  • Sadly, my nieces and nephews have not taken to this dish like me and my siblings, but my mom's "Pink Stuff" is a must! I think everyone has a variant and call it different things, but it's a salad made of jello and fruit cocktail, mixed with whip cream. That is ALWAYS part of thanksgiving! ^_^
  • Laura
Sweet Potatoes Casserole!! Can't wait for it.
  • Diane
It wouldn't be Thanksgiving dinner without the dressing and cranberry sauce.

  • sarah
Having a hard time deciding, we always have so much delicious food...but I'd probably say my Grandma's Macaroni & cheese!! It is so rich, but oh so good :) (when i say rich i mean rich...lots of sharp & extra sharp cheddar cheese, cream cheese & canned milk)
  • Jenny Wu
Cornbread dressing with fresh Apalachicola oysters tucked into at least half the pan. Only half the family eats oysters so this way everyone is happy:)
  • Laura
Pumpkin Pie! Hope the stores don't sell out of the pumpkin!

I have tried the new Panko Breadcrumbs, and we like them! Put them on top of the mac & cheese we made for thanksgiving earlier this week!
  • Jenny

  • Jeanna A.
Turkey! I know, it's obvious, but honestly, we could serve anything with it (and boy have we!) and it's okay. I love turkey on Thanksgiving with a nice side of carbs, followed by more random carbs and a slice of dessert. :P
  • Jess
My favorite dish is a pot of southern green beans simmered all day with bacon ,chicken broth, onions and new potatoes...no matter where I am for Thanksgiving I make these beans!

My husband and I met on eHarmony. We caught each other's attention when we each had mentioned that our respective families serves a course of manicotti before the turkey and traditional fixings on Thanksgiving. It wouldn't be Thanksgiving without our favorite Italian baked dish of manicotti! Without it, we might never have had those first conversations that brought us together!

Dressing for sure. My mom makes cornbread dressing from scratch - can't imagine Thanksgiving without it!! Yum!!
  • Jennifer
Can't do just one - Mawmaw's dressing and Granny's sweet potato casserole!
  • Debbie
My father made cornbread dressing every year for Christmas and Thanksgiving. He was a wonderfull old fashioned country cook up till he passed away at the age of 92. I hate to say it, but I think it was the broth he used with all the grease from the turkey still in it. That grease did not seem to affect his health at all. He was however very active and kept a vegetable garden going in his ripe old age. I will try each year to come close to his delicious savory dressing. I am close, but I think I just need to close my eyes and dump in some of that good ole turkey broth with the drippings still in it. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
  • Catherine
Sweet potato souffle from Honeybaked Ham is one of my many favorites of this holiday.
  • Shelli

  • Sabrina Williams
My mama's homemade baked mac & cheese!

BBQ ribs, of course! When my aunt was in college, she asked her dad (my grandpa) to make his famous ribs on his old steel smoker for Thanksgiving. He did that every year until he was 84 - his last Thanksgiving. Now, the other men in the family have taken over the delicious tradition on the same smoker. While we have other goodies with the ribs, it's those that everyone goes for first.

  • Katie
It wouldn't be Thanksgiving if I didn't make pumpkin cheesecake!!

Well the turkey is the one thing I can't have Thanksgiving without. One year we went and ordered Chinese take out, was way too weird for us. I don't recall why we did that, but we had Thanksgiving dinner the next night. My son, who's in college told me this year, no going out, he wants turkey at home for Thanksgiving.
  • Machelle
Definitely Italian Herb Stuffing made with sour dough bread..cranberry sauce is a must with this dish (and gravy on it all is sublime)! Maybe the cranberry sauce is a dish of it's own if you make it at home like we do but the stuffing w/ gravy is definitely one dish at my house..lol :)

My favorite as a child was always green bean casserole, but as an adult I'm trying to branch out! I've realized this year, as I prepare to host out of state family for the first time in my new home, I just want to make everyone else's favorites. That should cover any whims I have!
  • Pineapple casserole. lol My husband has request from his co-workers for me to make it every year. It is quick and easy and this week it is cheap with the free pineapple and cheap Ritz at publix.
  • Jenna
It would definetly not be the same without cranberry relish. We make it with fresh cranberries, apples and and orange. It is the awww on the table when we start to eat. YUM YUM.
  • Keanna
You can't have Thanksgiving without my mothers Deviled Eggs. Some families don't do them, but our's does- and when I get married to my Fiance and have kids, so will our family too. :)
  • Christine
Turkey of course, oh and a bottle of wine (does that count as a side dish?????)
  • Heather
I would have to say that since I started helping my grandmother out with some of the cooking I have thoroughly enjoyed making broccoli casserole & crockpot macaroni. The recipes I have found for these 2 dishes are so simple & taste amazing! Every time we have something at work I am asked to bring both of these! YUMMY!!
  • Teresa Ginn
Dressiing! Sometimes we have turkey through out the year, but Thanksgiving is the only time we have the dressing, and it is so yummy! Thanks for your site - it is awesome! :o)
  • Amanda
My late grandmothers famous yeast rolls. The best! And add them into stuffing.....mmmm.
  • Elizabeth Whitman
Turkey, stuffing and gravy. It's really one dish. Wouldn't be thanksgiving without it.
  • Lorraine Rose
I just have to have turkey and dressing on Thanksgiving. I know it's simplistic, but really, without it, It would just be another meal. The day wouldn't lose its meaning, but the meal itself would lose its specialness.
  • Beth Walling
    Turkey - Of course!!
  • Dianne
It wouldn't be Thanksgiving without Turkey and Cornbread Stuffing! For dessert there simply must be Pumpkin Pie with whipped cream...mmmmm...making my mouth water!
  • Harriett
As much as turkey is key to Thanksgiving dinner I would say stuffing is tied with it. My favorite Thanksgiving dish is my Nana's homemade cornbread stuffing with homemade gravy. She always made extra gravy for me without the giblets.
  • Michelle Fowler
Fried Cauliflower. My mother has made this since I was young. There was a steakhouse in Atlanta that used to bring itout inseat of bread. I can not imagine a holiday meal without it!!
  • Sandy
Thanksgiving would not be the same with out Turnipgreens flavored with backbones. I always have to cook a huge pot for my family and by the end of the night it is completely empty.
  • Natasha
wouldn't be thanksgiving without homemade mac-n-cheese! YUMMO!
  • Debbie
It is hard to pick just one, since thanksgiving is such a traditional holiday. It would have to be Turkey.

  • Pamela
I've continued my Mother's tradition of making her Mince Pies - she added cherry pie filling & crushed pineapple & pecans. She took one to all her doctors, pharmacists, nurses & all those who had helped her throughout the year. It was almost healthy!
  • Mary
My mom's potato salad and mother-in-law's cornbread dressing.
  • Linda
It wouldn't be Thanksgiving without pumpkin pie with whipped cream! Yummy!!!
  • Couponpearl
One thing... Hands down its my Baked Mac N Cheese. We add some extra flavor by using part Pepper Jack Cheese with the Sharp Chedder, it adds a ton of Flavor (everyone loves it). We also mix PROGRESSO BREAD CRUMBS and butter for a crumb topping then sprinkle Paprika on top. YUMMY!!
  • couponssssssss
We call it macaroni pie, and our family must have it for Thanksgiving. It's made with cooked rotini noodles tossed in butter to which you add 1 can of evaporated milk, 1 beaten egg, and a lb of sharp cheddar cheese! Stick it back in the oven for 30 minutes to cook up, and you'll never go back to box mac and cheese again. Don't try to substitute anything else for the curly noodles; it's just not the same.
  • Christy
No Thanksgiving of mine could ever be without my moms cornbread dressing that is cooked inside the Turkey. When the family is gathered, our thanks are given, and grace is shared, there is nothing better than mom's turkey cornbread dressing with the juiciest white turkey meat covered in the juices from the pan of the turkey with homemade mashed potatoes and gravy. Thanks Mom...... it is the best!!!
  • Momma's dressing and candied yams - Hands down!
  • Melanie
simply would not be Thanksgiving without my Grandmother's candied sweet potatoes and all my family surrounding the table!
  • sarah

  • Pam
Our Thanksgiving is not complete without caramel pie!
  • Sherry
It just would not be Thanksgiving without Granny's Promised Land Sweet Potato Pie. The pie, family, friends and many wonderful memories just make Thanksgiving so special.
  • Amanda
The Post-Thanksgiving Thanksgiving Sandwich - Toasted bread with turkey breast meat, stuffing, gravy and cranberry sauce. One bite and you're in heaven!
  • Dressing is a must for Thanksgiving!
  • sherry T
For me it's the cranberry sauce. Doesn't matter if it slithers from the can and sliced or some fancy fresh cranberry relish. I love the cranberry at Thanksgiving!
  • Natasha
I always look forward to my grandmother Grace's dressing. There was always a small pan just for me with no onions :) Now that she has went on to be with the Lord, my aunt has taken the baton and it tastes just the same! I told her last year that grandmother Grace would be proud!! So thankful for my family & for dressing!! :)
  • Sharon

  • Catherine
It wouldn't be Thanksgiving without my mama's cornbread dressing! The recipe has been handed down from my Nanny, to my mama, to me. I love the way the celery and sage makes the house smell when it is cooking. It is the smell of Thanksgiving to me!
  • Susan
    Champagne Brunch
  • Beth
The one dish that makes our Thanksgiving memorable (and honorable) is a ribeye steak. My brother could not stand ham or turkey so each year he was made a ribeye for Thanksgiving (and Christmas) dinner. He passed away a few years back about a month before Thanksgiving, but every year, along with the turkey and ham that is served, we all enjoy a bit of a grilled ribeye steak. We know he is smiling down upon us enjoying his steak right along with us :)
  • Tarrah R.
LOVE this...I got choked up! Beautiful story. God Bless you!
  • Rachel
My grandmothers homemade yeast rolls..... they melt in your mouth!
  • Megan
My husband's smoked turkeys and two batches of dressing - regular cornbread, then crawfish dressing. Both of which could not be made without lots of yummy broth! : )-
  • Tinap
At our house it is not Thanksgiving without my husbands "fried" turkey!! YUM... I did have the fire department on stand by the first year he used his fryer!!

  • Sweet Potato Casserole
  • Carlye
After Mom and I cook for 3 days, and clean up after 30 or more people, we are too tired and still too busy trying to make our guests happy and cater to all of the children. My favorite is the bowl of turkey, mashed taters, gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce and green bean casserole all mixed up and nuked in the microwave. Everything is cleaned up, everyone is gone, and Mom and I get to put our feet up and just enjoy.
  • Jaimi
    My dad's famous pecan pie!
  • Krissi
It would not be Thanksgiving with out DRESSING not stuffing but Dressing or I should say Dressin'. My Meme made it for us and now that she is an angel in heaven my mom makes it and it would definitely not feel like thanksgiving without it.
  • It would definitely not be Thanksgiving for me without sweet potato souffle, complete with lots of brown sugar atop!
  • Susan S.
It would not be Thanksgiving without Sweet Potato Casserole topped with pecan/brown sugar topping!!! But most of all it would not be Thanksgiving without being thankful for family!!!!
  • Tarrah R.
It DEFINATELY would not be Thanksgiving without Mashed Potatoes. I know that's a given, but one year, EVERYONE forgot them, and we all came away feeling a little 'empty'. But Not our tummies, of course!
  • Melinda
    Pumpkin pie!
  • Ginny
Even when we weren't able to be with family for Thanksgiving, I still would make the dressing that my mom made when we were growing up. It's a mixture of a little bit of everything and has changed throughout the years, but it's still not Thanksgiving without it. .... I may have to make some tonight :o
  • MindiW
I can't live without some cranberry sauce.
  • Tonda
My mom's homemade cranberries Jello Salad.

For Thanksgiving, stuffing is a must. Made with cornbread, celery, and chicken broth, and baked in the oven. HmmmmMMMM good! We call it stuffing, but we dont stuff the turkey with it, but make 2 huge pans of it.
  • cindylouwho
It wouldn't be thanksgiving without cornbread stuffing! :) Happy Thanksgiving Jenny
  • Carrie
For me, it wouldn't be Thanksgiving without corn casserole or pumpkin pie. This is my first Thanksgiving being married, and I'm so excited to get to cook and spend the holiday with my wonderful husband and family! That's what makes it Thanksgiving for me!

I can honestly have Thanksgiving without any traditional food as long as I have my family with me.... (but it is always nice to have that good big bowl of home-made mashed potatoes.)
  • Jenny Q.
Ok, so we have always called it "sweet potatoes and marshmallows". My dad always made 1/2 with walnuts and 1/2 without :-)

  • Sweet potato casserole- without a doubt!
  • Bethany
My mom's stuffing. The last 2 years I have gone to my husband's aunt's house (who is Italian) and had to endure some very odd dishes for Thanksgiving. This year I'm super-excited to be going to my parents' house for the holiday and having the stuffing I grew up on!
  • Lizzy
Turkey...this year, my husband's family decided to just have lasagna for Thanksgiving, and as you can imagine, I'm VERY bummed. It just won't be Thanksgiving without a real turkey dinner. :(

The dressing all the other dishes I can fix anytime but the dressing that goes with the turkey is only fixed on Thanksgiving at our house.
  • Jarrod
Sweet Potatoes with Pecans on top and Grand Mariner Orange Sauce! Without this it's just not Thanksgiving!
  • It would not be Thanksgiving without sweet potato casserole!
  • Tricia
    Pumpkin Pie!! Yummy!!
  • Jennifer W
That's easy. My Mommas cornbread dressing. She makes the biscuits & cornbread from scratch and then puts them into the best dressing ever! She mushes the dressing down into a pan and seves it in little squares. It looks a little odd but tastes wonderful. Forget the turkey & mashed potatoes, just give me the plate of dressing.
  • Lori
    Candied Yams
  • Traci M.
It is not Thanksgiving without the Stuffing.........and of course Pumpkin Pie (had to choose two, Thanksgiving is too yummy for just one ! ) Have a great one !

  • Kevin
Thanksgiving is not complete without a big serving of sweet potato casserole. A sweet potato pie could be substituted if it's the only option available.
  • Tanya
This one is easy. OCEAN SPRAY WHOLE CRANBERRY SAUCE! (Even better if I had coupons!)

    Tanya
  • Kim C
This made me LOL. I think EVERYTHING is better with a coupon ! ;o)
  • Alyssa
I love pecan pie and Mom's sage stuffing, but it is having friends and family around me that REALLY makes it Thanksgiving.
  • sara
My grandmother's cornbread dressing. I have tried to recreate it every year since her passing, but it just isn't the same.
  • Linda Stees
It would have to be wonderfully moist cornbread dressing made from scratch. In my mind that's a truly Southern dish, so it pleases me that even some of my relatives by marriage who are native to the North (that includes my husband) want to be sure that it's on the menu! It definitely will be.
  • Stacie
SIMPLE! Couldn't be Thanksgiving without Opa's homemade dressing! Happy Thanksgiving!
  • Ashley
It has to be homemade dressing.. Yum Yum
  • Joy
My favorite was always my grandmothers homemade dressing. She passed away 6 (almost 7) years ago. No one has her recipe, although knowing the cook she was, she probably just made it by memory. Thanksgiving has never been the same since, but the memory of her standing in the kitchen smiling so happy to see her family (and the smell of that YUMMY dressing) will live on forever.
  • shannon
Cornbread Dressing is my all time favorite.
  • Rhonda
Teeny tiny sweet pickles served in a crystal pickle dish (the only time it comes out of the china cabinet).

  • My favorite Thanksgiving dishes would have to be homemade mashed potatoes and sweet potato casserole. The holidays make me miss my mom and her wonderful cooking! Be sure to enjoy your moms this holiday season...tell them how much you appreciate them and love them!
I wish I could just one more time!
  • Marsha
I use these bread crumbs to make coconut shrimp...yummy! Will probably make some as appetizers for T-giving.
  • Jennifer
It wouldn't be thanksgiving without home made apple pie. Yum!
  • Stephanie
    Broccoli cheese casserole!!
  • Lissa
My husband's family was Amish, and they make SUCH GOOD FOOD. And they would cringe to hear me say this, but it just wouldn't be Thanksgiving to me without Canned Cranberry Sauce. :O/ My Mother-In-Law started asking me to just bring my own. :O)
  • Delanna
Cinnamon apples. I can remember then being my favorite at my grandmother's house growing up. Now my own children can't get enough of them. They are the first thing gone at Thanksgiving dinner. I think the kids like them because they are soft, cold, and colored red.
  • Carolyn
Little creamed onions! It's the only time of year we have them, but they are sooo good with the trukey and stuffing! Mmmmmmmm.
  • Beth
Sweet potato casserole with pecan pie top
  • Joyce
Love that pumpkin pie! and mom's dressing smothered in turkey gravy. Yum!
  • Mary
i'm sitting here trying to think of one thing....first i thought turkey, but one year we had enchiladas and it was great. then i thought... sweet potatoes or pumpkin pie, but you know what? it'd still be thanksgiving no matter what was on the table as long as my family was around it to share it.?
  • Becky
Homemade cornbread dressing with gravy----I can almost taste it now!
  • Katherine
Teryaki Turkey! My husband is half Japanese so we usually do an East-Meets-West kind of meal: Delicious!
  • Lauren
I would have to say sweet potatoes... but not the gooey casserole, the smooth mashed sweet potatoes. Gotta have em! Reminds me a bit of Texas!
  • Andrew
Cope's dried sweet corn. It's not Thanksgiving without it! (Even had Mom send it to Spain when I lived there.)
  • Merrilee
wouldn't be Thanksgiving without pumpkin pie topped with 3" of whipped cream!
  • Pamela
My cornbread dressing made with Pepperidge Farm Herb Stuffing is the time best. Also my Pumpkin Pie.
  • Carol
I love my green bean casserole, but with a little twist...velveeta cheese. It just wouldn't be Thanksgiving without it! :-)
  • Kim
    My mom's homemade dressing balls.
  • Dina
It will not be Thanksgiving without homemade stuffing!
  • Tiffany
I have to have my grandmother's broccoli casserole made with cheez-its, although I may have to give it a trial run with the panko bread crumbs!
  • Tricia
Our family tradition is that everyone makes at least one dish - I remember my 2-year-old son carefully cutting up squash with a plastic knife for squash casserole. He's 10 now, and still makes it every year, even though he won't eat it! So we have to have that, the pecan pie my second daughter usually overbakes, the green beans my third daughter does, sweet potatoes from my oldest, plus whatever innovation catches my fourth daughter's eye. And all of them pitch in to make the cornbread dressing.
  • Risa
It would have to be........ Dressing and cranberry sauce (oops -that's 2!!)
    Happy Thanksgiving!
  • Becky T
IT would not be thanksgiving without my Nanny's Giblet gravy and my moms dressing.
  • Jennifer
    My mom's Cranberry Fluff Salad!
  • Daleen
For our family, the Thanksgiving meal would be incomplete without Grannie's dressing. It is amazing. We also love Sweet Potato Casserole (the one with brown sugar and pecans on top).
  • Brenda
It would be my mothers cornbread dressing. As far as I am concerned she makes the best! It is made we chicken and a lot of this and that but the most important ingredient is the love.
  • carol velasco
    My moms squash casserole!
  • LD
The one dish is hamburger stuffing . It is something the women [Canadian French] in my family have done for generations. I am not sure my older girls are carrying on this tradition . But when I was not able to cook anymore my husband had taken up the duty of making this dish . So in my house the tradition goes on !!
  • Melinda
It wouldn't be Thanksgiving without my Mom's dressing and gravey. No one makes dressing like my Mom. She's 84 years old and still makes the dressing for our large family gatherings at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
  • Kristen
It wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without homemade stuffing!
  • Amy
    My mother's dressing!
  • Lisa Watson
I would have to say cranberry sauce! It's not technically a dish but gosh, it makes such a great addition to the meal! I love it with turkey and cornbread dressing and even plain!
  • Michele
    It's gotta be the stuffing!
  • HSH
Sweet Potato Praline. My mother passed away recently so this year is my first attempt to carry on the tradition!! Wish me luck!
  • ET
    My mama's stuffing!
  • I know it sounds weird, but dessert of chocolate torte royale, a family tradition.
  • Beth
    Sausage stuffing!!
  • Kim C
I cannot choose just ONE dish. I love my family so very much and we all pitch in and bring a dish or two. Most of the recipes came from my Grandmother. She would be so proud to know that we've carried her love for food down many generations. I can narrow it down to four dishes... is that okay ? Sweet Cornbread dressing. Macaroni and cheese (My hubby won't let me make anything but boxed, he doesn't like actual homemade. He's weird I know), Pea salad and then my brother's deep fried turkey.

Mmmm, I'm getting hungry just thinking about that food.
  • Melissa
If I have to pick just one dish, it would be "Asparagus Casserole." That pretty blue spoon would look really good scooping out some onto my plate. :)
  • Mina
Just a side note. I hadn't heard of Panko bread crumbs before tonight. So, Progresso has successfully spread the word at least a bit through this offer. :-)

We do use a lot of bread crumbs, but we use even more broth. Two to six qts/wk during the cool months is normal here. Both bread crumbs and broth are Must Haves as pantry staples because they are such versatile time savers. They make it easy to add that extra touch to even quick meals.
  • Mina
The one dish that Thanksgiving would not be the same without is my porcelain turkey platter. Although a simple platter, it is beautiful to me. It is my grandmother's platter, and served her well for many decades before it came to me. I see the platter and know that our grandparents, great-grandparents, and parents are also with us on this most special day.

As for food, the meal and leftovers center around The Turkey, and each is always, "the best turkey ever!" no matter how I cook it. But it would still be Thanksgiving, even without the turkey, as long as there was a spirit of thankfulness.

Thanksgiving is my favorite major holiday of the year because it is family centered, and a time when people are most conscious of the real blessings in their lives that they otherwise take for granted, and look forward with hope to the future. The food is a symbol of the bounty that surrounds each of us. The gathering of people around that meal, whether in reality or spirit, symbolizes our greatest blessing - our connectivity and relationships with one another. That is why a simple "dish" means so much to me on that day.
  • Karoline
Broccoli Casserole! yum!! My Aunt would always make it for herself on Thanksgiving because she is allergic to so many traditional Thanksgiving foods and I found a love for it when I was dared into trying it by my older cousin. Now if my Aunt doesn't come to our Thanksgiving - well we have to do our best to make our own rendition of the casserole (since her's is a secret) It's just never the same without it. It Won't be the same this Thanksgiving... Thanksgiving with the husband's family this year. bummer (just kidding... kinda) ha!
  • Leigh
Thanksgiving would not be the same without my mother's delicious homemade dressing!
  • Jenny W.
This may sound weird, but for me Thanksgiving lunch (we always do lunch with my side of the fam.) wouldn't be complete without my Mom's asparagus casserole. Its a running joke in my family that you are not a true adult until you have tasted the asparagus casserole...because it looks absolutely disgusting through a child's eyes. The green tone of it is eerie, it contains boiled eggs, and is topped either by pretzels or breadcrumbs...composed of canned asparagus, cream of mushroom soup, and loads of shredded cheddar, as you can imagine the dish may seem daunting at first, but once you taste the asparagus casserole you are hooked! Especially good with ham....can't wait! (sorry for the novella)
  • KC
    Mashed potatoes & gravy!!!
  • It wouldn't be Thanksgiving without Pumpkin Pie!! =)
  • Hope
It would not be Thanksgiving without my Grandma's Dressing..it is the best I have ever had!!! She always puts some to the side for me to make sure I get some. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
  • Lindy
    Pumpkin Pie!!
  • It's not Thanksgiving without my mom's frozen white salad. It's got pineapple, pecans, heavy cream, cool whip....and other yummies. Think old-lady-sweet-salad kind of stuff. Yum.
  • Jenny
    My Mom's buttermilk pie.
  • pharmSCgirl
Homemade banana pudding while it's still warm! Yummy!
  • Caroline
For our family it is my grandmother's caramel cake. We actually hide pieces so that we can get more than one sliver. I wish she would make two but then I guess it might lose its appeal. Happy Thanksgiving!
  • Josefina
Green bean casserole made from scratch with whipping cream and mushrooms!
  • Sheri
My mom's stuffing I could never be without!
  • Rebecca
I am so hungry after reading everyone's responses! Lol. I think yams & marshmallows are my fave but honestly, I scoop that up with turkey a lot too so its all good! Lol. :D
  • Jennifer
    Pumpkin pie of course!
  • Summer
I love my mom's baked hen. It is so much juicer than turkey!
  • Heather
My mom's pumpkin roll is out of this world...can't wait to have it on Thursday!
  • Joy
It could not be Thanksgiving without Turkey for me...but my favorite dish at the holidays is Sweet Potato souffle...gotta have that!
  • amy
Home-made dressing made from scratch very green from lots of sage.
    Thanks.
    Happy Turkey day.
  • Michele
    Green been casserole
  • Green bean casserole! (also, sister schubert rolls and pumpkin pie)
  • For me it's not Thanksgiving without the sandwiches we make that night from leftovers. Open faced, with turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, gravy, and cranberries. The best parts of the dinner all in one!
  • Jennifer Speer
I don't think I can pick just one. My mom's whole side of the family all go to my cousin's house. Everyone is assigned to bring something. We laugh because each person always brings the same thing every year. I always bring the macaroni and cheese and the hashbrown casserole. I love having the Honey Baked Ham and my cousin makes the best green beans!!
  • Judi Labrecque
Our Thanksgivings are eclectic, and I try something new almost every year! A classic we could not do without, though, is cornbread dressing. It is absolutely my favorite!
  • Rebecca
I can't have thanksgiving without spicy sausage stuffing. My mom's recipe could be a meal all on its own! And it usually is the day after :)
  • Anya
Since I married my husband, we have not been able to spend Thanksgiving with his family since they live very far away. His birthday is November 26th and sometimes falls on Thanksgiving (like this year!) so Thanksgiving is especially special for him. I have made it a tradition to always make a baked sweet potato casserole with marshmallows like the one his mother always made to remind him of home! It's not a dish that I ever had growing up but it's become one of my favorite dishes to make and it certainly wouldn't be Thanksgiving without it!
  • Lisa
It would not be Thanksgiving without the turkey. It is the one time of year where we eat and eat and eat all that turkey goodness filled with tryptophan and that puts us into a wonderful food coma until it is time to get up and make a turkey leftover sandwich :) Happy Thanksgiving!
  • shawn
Cornbread dressing with giblet gravy. I am the youngest of four girls. Our tradition is that all of us have to help make the dressing (not stuffing, we are in the south). I crumble the loaf bread and cornbread, another sister pours the broth, another breaks the eggs, and the other one puts in the seasonings. We all get to use the mixer and then we debate over whether it's done or not.....This year will be much different for us. Our family home burnt to the ground this January and my parents rebuilt. This will be the first year in the new house.
  • Ali
My Aunt Leslie's homemade apple pie... it has been two years since I have been home for Thanksgiving and can't wait to have it!
  • Donna G
Toasted rice! It makes a nice nutty side to the turkey and fixins.
  • It wouldn't be Thanksgiving without broccoli casserole. :)
  • It wouldn't be Thanksgiving without the stuffing/dressing. I mean, everything else is an afterthought...who needs turkey?
  • Buffy Asaro
WOW - so many replys...I'm starving now!!! But for me - Thanksgiving wouldn't be Thanksgiving without my Aunt Polly's String Bean Cassarole and Potatoe Salad....Sadly, she left us 11 months ago to be with her Lord and Savior...We are going to give it a go on her recipies, but Thanksgiving wont be the same without her smiling face! Please pray for my family. Thanks!
  • Jennifer
What other than homemade cranberry sauce? I have turkey many times throughout the year, but only have cranberry sauce on Thanksgiving. Makes a good condiment on a post-Thanksgiving turkey sandwich.
  • Lisa

I guess we are weird because no one else has mentioned ham. It would not be Thanksgiving without ham, baked mac n cheese with bacon on top, and deviled eggs with sweet relish in them. Of course they must be cut up into small pieces and eatten all at the same time. A little of it all on the fork...a party in my mouth!!! I can't wait...and I am hosting this year for the first time. Wish me luck...my family and my hubby's?! Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
  • Tina
I am right there with you on the ham, but my favorite Thanksgiving dish is my mom's potato salad, warm, of course, right after it has been mixed.

Sweet potato fluff - beat those cooked sweeties, add butter, pecans, brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg - put in well greased pan of some sort and bake 30 minutes at 350F, top with mini marshmallows, then broil carefully until nicely browned on top. serve and enjoy!
  • christina
I can't imagine Thanksgiving without turkey and gravy. It's my favorite and I make it several times a year so my family does Thanksgiving several times a year.
  • Emily
My family has to have my made-from-scratch cornbread dressing. A dear friend in Montgomery shared the recipe when my eldest daughter was a baby. It is dense, moist and flavorful and would make a pretty good meal all by itself! It is one of many family recipes we have each Thanksgiving....we could never eat anywhere but home for fear of not having those dishes, so I'm always the hostess!
  • Definitely the cranberry sauce!
  • Shannon
My vote goes to green bean casserole. Of course I love the turkey also.
