Poison Prevention Giveaway

Posted on Mar 15 2010 | By Jenny · Comments View Comments

Did you know that March 14th started the beginning of Poison Prevention Week??

We all see the number to call on the backs of products, but have you ever needed them?  I confess that being a RN I always thought I was smart enough to never get in a situation to need to call.  However, I was very wrong.  When my twins were  2 years old they climbed out of their beds while we were traveling and got into my toiletry bag (which I thought was put away).  They were down for a nap and we heard nothing since we were in another area of the house.  When I went in to get them I found my bottle of prenatal vitamins opened and they were eating some of the pills.  My brain instantly went back to lessons learned in school about iron being a leading cause of poisoning in children under 6.

My instinct was to grab up the kiddos and run to the phone.  We called the center for Florida and they quickly calmed me down and talked us through everything.  We ended up okay; they had each gotten one tablet and the center said that they were fine but that we needed to stay put, get them to drink lots, and keep an eye on them.  It was a huge blessing to know that we didn’t need to rush anywhere and get educated advice on what to do.

Not everyone knows this wonderful services exsits or that it is FREE.  We all have access to a center and many of you even have a center in your local area.

Many of the calls that they get each week are about children under the age of 6 and, just as we learned, more than 80% of the callers are given excellent advice and they do not have to go in for further medical treatment.

The Palmetto Poison Center is teaming up with Southern Savers this week to try to increase awareness.  Many centers provide:

  • Treatment advice for poison related emergencies/information to the public and health care professionals 24 hours a day, free of charge.
  • Free public education programs throughout the state (really to anyone that will listen)
  • Public service announcements on poisoning related topics to media on an as-needed-basis (Holiday hazards, poisoning trends, etc..)
  • A website where our citizens can order free materials like Mr. Yuk stickers, coloring books, magnets, etc…

The Palmetto Poison Center wants to increase the number of folks that they are helping and educating.    So…  Head over to their Facebook page and become a fan. They put out great safety tips and announcements through facebook.

After you become a fan come back here and leave a comment.  For every 100 fans that they get this week 1 of you will a FREE Mr. Yuk t-shirt.  So if they get 1000 new fans that’s 10 shirts!

I will announce all the t-shirt winners Friday afternoon.

  • This is awesome! So glad they are on Facebook!!! I have always worried about poisons in the household (as I'm sure most mothers do!) I had to call a poison control center many years ago when our dog (Lady) ate a bunch of shrimp that a neighbor had thrown in their backyard and pored bleach over in order to stop the smell...Lady began having seizures and the staff helped me ensure that our pet lived through the experience. Lady still has seizures on a regular basis, but without poison control, she wouldn't still be a part of our family eight years later. I am so thankful to have a poison control center nearby and that I haven't had to call about my daughter, but at least I know they are there if we need them. It was also conforting to know that they didn't push off my concerns simply because I called about a pet and not a person. Thanks Jenny for this!

  • Jenny, would you mind if I copied your article and put it on my blog. I too am a big believer in the fantastic job these poison control centers do! When my 10 year old was a toodler, he got into a bottle of cough meds and we too panic! We called poison control and was told to flush him with fluids and told what to look for if we needed to go to the ER. He was fine. He had not gotten much in him. But it taught me that you can never be too careful with kids being around. I don't have a big following yet, but if your article will help save one life it's worth it! Thanks!

I just became a fan on facebook. Thanks for letting me know they have a fan page. I, like many others, have had to dial their number before and they were most helpful. At the time, I had a toddler who ingested part of a bar of soap. All ended up okay, but what a relief to be able to immediately get someone helpful and knowledgeable on the phone!

I wish I would have known about this about a month ago! My 20 month old son got into some of my Tussicaps (cold medicine and hydrocodone). I never thought I would be stupid enough to leave something harmful within his reach but I was looking at the bottle when I heard my son getting up from a nap. I set them on the end table next to the couch and went and got my son. I totally forgot that they were on the table and started drying my hair (I dry my hair in the living room b/c I don't like standing up to do it in the bathroom). I turned around after about two minutes and saw that my son had the bottle of medicine in his hand. The cap was on it so I didn't think anything of it until I saw four pills on the floor. I told my husband what happened (he's in nursing school) and luckily he had just counted the pills the day before so he knew that there were four pills missing. We immediately rushed him to the emergency room (only live 3 minutes away) and because my husband works there we were able to go straight back. They had him drink charcoal mixed with pepsi but he wasn't drinking it fast enough so they had to pour it down a nasogastric tube. They ended up transferring him to Palmetto Health for the night for observation just in case the medicine was still in his system (time release). That was such a scary experience that I never thought would happen to me! I am glad that the Palmetto Poison Center is there to help parents out!

I became a fan even though I live in MI. I had to call them after my daughter ate some toothpaste. Thankfully, they said she just needed to drink some milk. I am thankful for them and the service they provide. Thank you! And thank you, Jenny for all your hard work!

Poison Control Center is a very helpful place and can get you out of a situation when you need help. As a Early Childhood teacher, they have always given me great information to give to my parents and to the children in my class. Our class knows that if Mr Yuck is on a bottle they know that means that they are not too touch the product. Teachers know that if Mr Yuck is on the bottle then that bottle should be out of the reach of children.
