Many of you already know that Publix offers free antibiotics, but did you know that they offer free Diabetes medications too??

Get the Glucophage generic,  Metformin (500 mg, 850 mg and 1000 mg) FREE, up to a 30-day supply at a time. There’s no limit to the number of refills of free medication you can receive.

Other Free Medications are 14 day supplies of:

  • Amoxicillin
  • Cephalexin (capsules and suspension only)
  • Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (SMZ-TMP)
  • Ciprofloxacin (excluding Ciprofloxacin XR)
  • Penicillin VK
  • Ampicillin
  • Erythromycin Stearate and Ethylsuccinate
  • Doxycycline Hyclate (capsules)

There are no limits on the number of prescriptions you can have filled.  And they’re FREE to you regardless of your prescription insurance provider.

(Tip:  I would keep this list handy and see if one of these might work for that next ear infection while you are at the doctor’s office).

      Thanks for sharing this. I did know about the antibiotics. I'm a nurse and tell all my patients if prescibed these antibiotics they can get them at Publix for free. I was told recently that the diabetic meds are $4 at Wal-Mart….but that can't beat FREE! Will definitely pass this info on to my patients!

      So, you just go in and fill the prescription…and it rings up free? or is there a coupon or something you have to mention?

      I need all the help I can get with the diabetes meds!

        It rings up free. I just had to get an antibiotic last month, and when I picked it up, the ticket just said $0.00.

      I had NO idea. Is there somewhere that we can get an actual list of what they will fill for free? The diabetic medicine alone will be a huge help for me, but I take sooo much medicine right now. I can use all of the help I can get. Granted, I get the Metformin for a 90 day supply for $10 at WM, but FREE is better.

      Our doctors office keeps a list there so that when they give us a prescription, they can automatically let you know if it will be free there. It has made things so much easier when things are tight but we need a prescription filled!

      I take Metformin for PCOS & infertility, but I take 4 pills a day. Is it what Publix considers a 30 day supply, or what your doctor prescribes as a 30 day supply?

        Emily, I take Metformin for PCOS as well and USED to take it for infertility. Just to let you know, I now have two beautiful little girls! Hang in there and have hope!

        I wanted to second what ulimae said! I take met as well for PCOS, and for infertility too! My son is almost 4, and we should be having our daughter in about two weeks!!! Sometimes one can feel very alone in the struggle and it is always nice to be reminded that there are others out there!       That's incredible, way to go Publix!!! I love that about them. I knew they offered free antibiotics and now free generic diabetic medication is just incredible, my appreciation for them is even more. That's a big expense to those who need it. I used to care for one who was diabetic, and the insulin (Humulin) was roughly $40 per little vial. That didn't even include syringes and such.

      Wow! I had no idea. We don't take medication regularly, but when we get sick, this would be great to know. My husband had to take amoxicillian a few weeks ago and it was $39 at Ingles. Do you have to sign up for any club with a yearly fee or you just give them the prescription and they fill it for free? It just sounds too good to be true!

        They are just FREE!! You don't have to do anything! It makes having a sick child a little more pleasant when I can get her prescriptions for free!!

        Nope you dont have to do a thing…well except show up with a prescription for it…LOL! We saved over $200 last year alone in free meds from Publix…it is a very nice deal!!

      Just go to the publix website and click on the tab, health and pharmacy I think it is. It will have the info on the ABX and the diabetes management. It says 60 pills per month for the metformin.

      Wow, I had no clue that anything there was free! My husband takes Metformin but I think he already gets it free (retired military) but I will check to make sure. And with a young one in the house, I'm sure we will take advantage of this over the years!

      One time my dog needed a prescription for a UTI and I was able to get my vet to prescribe it (instead of paying a lot at the Vet's) and it was FREE!

      I have been able to take advantage of the free medications a number of times. There is one small catch, only cetain dosages are avalible. For example, Erythromycin is avalible in the 250mg or 500mg not the 333mg. The pharmacy can provide you with the complete list.

      I have it listed in my son's chart that we use Publix pharmacy and the pediatrician always refers to the Publix free list first to see if there's anything on it that will work. I always thank him! =)

      Love the Publix pharmacy!!! Not only are they free, but I don't have to wait forever like at Wal Mart.

      Unbelievable! I had no idea. I just went from Publix doing my weekly shopping trip to Rite Aid to fill my daughter's prescription for Amoxicillin (Strep Throat) and paid $29 for that and anti nausea medicine. How I wish I had known. I guess I will know for next time though.

      We love Publix free antibiotics! There is no club no sign up no yearly fee. Just the doctors script.

      Here I thought I was in the know because I knew about the free antibiotics. Not only that, but I've been paying more for my metformin than the Wal-Mart price already. Now I will definitely get it for free. Thanks once again, Jenny!

      This program works for your PETS too!! I didn't even know until my vet told me to go get the script filled at Publix and that it would be free. The pharmacy had no problem filling it from my vets script in my pets name. Saved us $25 dollars on cephalexin.

      One of the women I babysit for told me about the free metformin. As some of you may know, childcare doesn't pay very well, so anything that I can get for FREE is a real blessing!!

      I tried to use the Penny Item at my Publix in Greenacres Florida and was told by the store manager they never heard of Southern Savers and would not honor the Penny Item. Is this limited to only certain Publix's.

        On the Penny Item posts here, it always says, in bold print,
        **Note: FL and Coastal GA stores DO NOT participate in the Penny Item**

        I'm assuming that's why you were told that they do not honor it. Sorry. :(

      Meijer stores offer free antibiotics as well. Also if you get a prescription for prenatal vitimins, you can get them free at the pharmacy counter as well.
