I don’t often cover Family Dollar, but recently I was given the opportunity to compare their brand products to the name brands, and I couldn’t pass it up. Family Dollar has recently released a new private brand of food called Family Gourmet. Let me go ahead and say that most of you know that I don’t normally recommend private brands because you can save more with coupons for name brands. That being said, I was very impressed by the quality of Family Gourmet products.

One of the big selling-points of Family Gourmet products is their high amount of quality tests. If the products aren’t equivalent or better than the national brands, you can get a full refund. Clearly Family Dollar is taking a lot of confidence in their new line, and, for the most part, they have every reason to do so. Price-wise you will probably still do better with coupons, but the price is pretty good all-things considered. (They even have coupons you can print for their brand!)

Ok, so now for the breakdown. I received several Family Gourmet products and their national brand competitors courtesy of Family Dollar to try for myself. Here is what I got:

Comparing the products was a blast. With help from my husband, I would have him mix up the products so I wouldn’t know which one was which. In the end, the quality was pretty amazing. I honestly could tell no difference between the waffles and actually preferred the family gourmet syrup. The question concerning those products was actually more of personal preference than quality; the syrup was a little sweeter and the waffles were a tad fluffier (though that could have been my toaster oven’s fault…).

After my tasting run was finished, I honestly believe these products to be on equal level with their name brand counterpart. The only two that I still found a marked difference between were the Apple Juices and the coffee (though my husband makes coffee every morning roasting his own beans, so that is not a fair comparison).

Not only was this test a fun one, but Family Dollar also wants to give you all a chance to try the Family Gourmet brand for yourself!

I would definitely be interested in the cheese snack crackers. So far, no generic brands of Cheez it have tasted good. That is one of the few products that we ALWAYS buy the name brand. If they taste as good or better than cheez it (and I don't have a coupon at the time) we may consider buying it.

Oh, and the apple juice. I do like apple juice but I sometimes water mine down a little. That is exciting news though, that they have these products that can actually compete with national brands. I would be curious to try the FD/FG snack crackers. I have found that this is one item that is difficult to find good taste and texture(crisp crunch) in for generic/store brands. I would also like to try the Berry Bunch O'crunch breakfast cereal, and the Gourmet Ground coffee & creamer. I have a Family Dollar closer than any other store, so I often go there for last-minute necessities!!! :-)
