Many Americans have fond vehicle-related stories and memories that they shared with dad – be it taking a road trip or spending time together under the hood. In honor of Father’s Day, Jiffy Lube is encouraging Americans to share their memories or the car care knowledge that dad passed down via the “Keeping My Ride Alive” Facebook community – a place for drivers who hope to achieve high-mileage on their vehicles. Anyone can upload images of their vehicle and a caption about what they learned from dad.

Regular preventive maintenance is the best way to keep the family’s vehicle running for years to come, and the Jiffy Lube Gift Card can help this Father’s Day!  It can be a great Father’s Day gift, be it standalone or as part of a gift basket, to help make dad’s errands easier and to help him preserve the value and longevity of his vehicle.

The Jiffy Lube Gift Card can be loaded with any dollar amount from $5 to $300 and can be redeemed toward any Jiffy Lube preventive maintenance service, including the popular Jiffy Lube Signature Service® Oil Change, which provides drivers with much more than just an oil and filter change.  It is a quick and convenient way for dads to maintain their vehicles.

Jiffy Lube Gift Cards are available for purchase at their website or at participating in-store locations. The cards have no inactivity fees or expiration date.  (On a not so father’s day note, I would have loved for my parents to have given me a card like this is college!)

This is my dad's memory really… I was too young. He was driving me around the area he grew up in when I was very small. I was sitting close to him in his beat up truck listening to the stories. I finally turned to him and said, “I hun-gy my Daddy.” He laughed, ended the trip down memory lane, and took me to breakfast!

We thought one fo our siblings did it and got by with it until we were grown and he told us. LOL!

My Daddy was a car buff, and a mechanical engineer, so he was excellent at buying, repairing, and generally knowing about cars.  My favorite memory of him is watching old black and white movies, and hearing him tell my mom what year the movie was made based on the model of the cars in the scene!  Sure miss him!!

    41. Michele Moffett says:

I'm not sure if it is a favorite but one that I can laugh at now. I had just turned 16 and wanted a car desperately…well maybe not so desperately as you will see. My mom had just left for Texas on a business trip and when she returned they were going to have a small birthday party. While she was gone, my dad said that he had an early birthday present in the driveway. I ran outside thinking this beautiful sports car when low and behold what do my wondering eyes see…… a rusted… and I do mean rusted puke brown Volkswagen rabbit. If things couldn't be worse, it was a stick shift with a huge whole in the floorboard. I tried to put on a smiling face and got in to drive and it truly looked like a rabbit as I was leaping from one side of the yard to the other side because I couldn't drive a stickshift! All the while my dad was laughing hysterically as a joke. Needless to say, I did end up getting another vehicle for my birthday but will never forget the RABBIT.

Sorry it's not a happier memory.

My family was very poor when I was growing up, and I remember we once had a junker of a car that had a hole in the floor board.  Dad was giving my aunt a ride somewhere one day.  She dropped a glove and it fell through the hole and onto the highway.  He had to stop and go back so she could pick up her glove.  I was mortified at the time, but now we can laugh about it!

      • Appleshell says:

Ha! Ha! Sounds like the cars we had growing up! One of ours, an old Mustang, was missing the back to the passenger's seat. My parents put the spare tire there and covered it with a blanket so we'd have something to lean back on. Also, the door wouldn't open from the inside, so you had to push the window down (that's right, PUSH it, because the window handle didn't work, either!) and reach out to open the door from the outside. Seriously…it's amazing we survived the cars we did back in those days isn't it? Could you imagine being pulled over in this day and age with a car in that kind of shape? Oh, and let's not forget how the air condition didn't work! Both windows down and my sister and I in the back seat with our hair blowing every which way. The wind was so strong that we only talked (screamed) to each other if it was something important. LOL

    59. Happymommy3 says:

My favorite memory was for my 18th birthday. I had a very old used car when I turned 15 but my dad surprised me big time for my 18th. I woke up to him telling me to come outside because he had my old car “fixed up for my birthday”. He told me he got new floor mats, paint job, and new radio. Yeah I thought. When I walked out side there was a brand new car with a big red bow on the top. I never thought that would happen to me. My mom said it was all my dad. He said he was proud of me and wanted to help me have a new car for college. The best part was it was a stick shift and I had no idea how to drive one. So I went from jumping up and down to very sad because I could not even drive my new car. The best part was my dad trying to teach me how to drive and me stalling out at every stop I had to make. That car got me through college, marriage, and my first child. I was very sad to trade it in when we had our second child.

My favorite memory of my dad and a car is from 1977.  There were 3 of us kids in the car and a highly excitable Irish Setter named Clancy.  Clancy loved to go in the car but always got car sick.  My dad always was optimistic that it wouldn't happen again.  But of course it did…and Clancy had apparently eaten a lot that day.  Really horrible.  My dad was cursing and we were screaming.  The smell of Formula 409 still reminds me of that day in the car with my dad and Clancy.

    70. Susie E says:

My Dad worked two jobs: the primary one was second shift for the railroad and he did appliance house calls in his “spare” time. It was rare that we got to spend much time with him. One special day I got to go along on one of his house calls. It was a rainy day and I laughed when he drove his truck through a big puddle. My special memory is how my Dad took the long route so we could splash through every puddle along the way. It is my favorite memory of my Dad!

Back when I was in igh school working at a snowball/icecream stand, my dad picked me up in a 92 red corolla.  I had no clue who it belonged to.  We got in the car and on the floor was a pizza from my fave pizza place and he said, “How do you like your car?”  I didn't even have a license at the time, but it was mine.  Since then, I've gotten rid of the “red pepper” as some of my friend's liked to call it, but that was a good memory.  Thanks for asking.

My most precious memory is how my Dad sacrificed for us by driving a car that had no air conditioning, no heat, windows that did not go down, the smell of someone who had once gotten sick in the car, zero shocks (i.e, like riding a trampoline), no music player, and more miles than the government has debts . . . so that I could go to college.  Thanks Dad.

My favorite memory is when my brother drove a '76 Mustang II (piece of junk) in high school. Coming home from school one day, the clutch fell off and we coasted into a side road.  We walked to a convenient store to make a pay phone call (this was before the days of cell phones) and told my Dad about the clutch falling off.  He insisted that this was impossible and my brother said, “But, Dad, I'm holding it in my hand.”  Being the literalist that he is, my Dad said, “Oh, you mean the clutch pedal.”  I was a freshman and my brother was a senior and we had no idea there was an actual part called a clutch, inside the hood.  This has given us a good laugh for years since.

My dad made me get up every Saturday morning for 1 year before I got my drivers license and go for “driving lessons”.  I had to drive on dirt roads, back woods, in fields, around curves, up and down hills, in the rain, sun, and freezing winter mornings.  I had to learn to change a tire, check the oil, watch him change the oil, and be familiar with some parts.  At first iI thought the idea was torture but it ended up being a year of wonderful saturday mornings with my dad.  It paid off because I got a car for my birthday and I have to say I've never had a wreck while driving! LOL Thanks Dad for the driving lessons!

My dad got a big truck with running lights when I was little.  When we went to visit his sister, she was embarrassed and ran in the house when we got there.  From then on, we always took the truck on those visits, and my dad turned the running lights on even during the day time.  It was great.

Several memories about my dad has involved cars. He was the one that first taught me how to drive. Help me pick out my first car. Help me buy by first car. And he was ALWAYS faithful about changing my oil almost to the point that it became annoying. It has become a lifelong joke between the two of us. This gift card would be perfect for my daddy!!! :)

I grew up without a dad.  What I did have was a grandfather who I thought was the toughest man alive.  I was the only granddaughter and I wanted to be one of the boys more than anything.  So at every opportunity I tried to prove to him I was tougher and a harder worker than my two boy cousins.  So, at age 8 I was thrilled when he taught me how to change a tire, help change the oil, or anything that let me work with him.  This relationship was one that I charished.  Years later at age 12 I was soo proud when my step dad told my stepbrother that until he could learn to change a tire he could not take the car.  He got soo mad and said something dumb and my grandfather told him to grow up cuz at 12 yrs old I was more mature that he was at 16 and I could change the tire.  I just loved seeing him blow it off and laughing at me…until I came in 20 min later and the tire was changed.  My grandfather grinned from ear to ear and asked if I wanted to go for a drive!

    137. Lindsay Wright says:

My favorite memory of my dad and a car (well truck) was when he would let my sister and I drive his Toyota Tacoma in the field below our house.  It was a stick shift and he would teach us how to drive, give us rules, and then just let us go.  Now I know how to drive a stick AND how to run over hay bales ;)

I can always remember driving in the the snow/freezing roads on a family trip in our VW Camper.  It was butternut squash yellow, with broccoli and cheese plaid interior.  It had the pop up camper that our family used on camping trips.  On this occasion, we were at the bottom of a hill, trying to get uphill, and the camper just would not go.  So we all get out to push and my mom had to pop the clutch to jump start it.  We still laugh about it to this day.

My dad wasn't a big “fixer,” but the thing that comes to mind instantly is actually when my sister and I tried to sneak a free kitten home by hiding it in between the seats of our stations wagon.   Everything was cool until he got in an heard “mew mew.”  We had to take it back.  ;)

    157. Juliehorton1 says:

It's funny, but as a teen, when I was experiencing “growing up” problems I would often try to talk to my dad.  Sometimes he would tell me, “Go talk to your mother!”  Other times he would soften, listen, and provide support and real insight.  It wasn't until many years later, when I was home on leave from the Army, that I had a revelation.  As my dad was rolling beneath my car and I was handing him tools, we had another of our heart-to-heart talks.  Then it dawned on me.  As long as he was under the car and we weren't face-to-face, we could talk about ANYTHING.  I began to reflect and realized that in all of my fondest memories of talking with my dad I never saw his face . . . because he was under the car, or under the hood!!  He didn't have to think of me as his little girl if he wasn't looking right at me. Even now that he's gone, I still want to talk to him every time I lift the hood of the car or see a mechanic on a roll-away

My favorite memory of my dad and cars would have to be when I was a freshmen in highschool. My Dad and I went out after dinner to go run some errands; while out my dad had to fill up the car with gas. It was a hot night so the sunroof was opened and the windows down. I was sitting in the passenger font seat when I felt something wet hit my arm… I turned around to see my dad spraying gasoline EVERYWHERE! He started to hold down the handle before he had put the pump in the gas tank, and he never thought to just let go! $20.00 later, no filled gas tank and one soaked dad in gasoline…we skipped the errands and laughed the whole way home. Any time this comes up at holiday dinners we ALL have a good laugh.

My favorite memory is really an ongoing memory. He has a 67 Firebird that he has been driving since he was 18. After several years of driving it, it fell into disrepair. The past several years he and my brothers have done a lot of work on it. Completely rebuilding the engine, repainting it… It was really fun to watch them bond over it. It's been driving great. Sadly, in April it was picked up and damaged pretty badly by a tornado in Georgia. So needless to say, they have some more work to do together.

I don't know my Dad but I will tell you about a wonderful Dad….my husband. My husband thought that he would paint the fenders on his Jeep. He was too lazy to take them off and paint them so he figured that if he just put painter's tape around them that would keep the black paint off of the white paint! Well after a few hours of drying he tried to pull the tape off. Yes, I said tried! The tape was stuck to the paint. It took forever to get the tape off and black paint still got all over his white Jeep. Four years later and almost all of the paint has now chipped of off the fenders. Can't help but love my husband…the best Dad I know.

My fav. memory of my dad with cars was when he taught me to change the oil in my car, though in typical fashion for my dad, he did NOT warn me not to have my face right up under the oil pan when I removed the oil cap.  He just sat back and laughed as the oil rushed out on my face…then taught me the technique to unscrew from the side so the oil runs into your change pan!

While growing up, my did did not own a car…too poor! He did not even have a license…why should he?  Years later, while in my 20's and I had been  gone from home for 3 years or so, I found out my dad had bought a car and was driving. He had retired and moved to the island of Puerto Rico. I was shocked but happy for him and my mom. They had to make up for lost years…unfortunatley, this lasted for 10 years. Dad lost his eyesight due to diabetes…so grateful he enjoyed this freedom for these years. Now he has lost 70% of his hearing…gotta love it still….he is going strong at 86 years of age.m No driving but he has family who drives him to Dr's and appointments…yea! for Jiffy Lube

The doors, fenders, bed, hood, and tailgate were all different colors and the motor was LOUD! It was real attention grabber and was appropriately called “THE YUCK TRUCK”! He had to take me to school one day & I begged him to let me out at the end of the drive. Instead, he pulled to the front door (where everyone hung out), and as I was crawling out, with head down, he revved the engine so loud that everyone stopped and looked!  He laughed for a week! It devastated me at the time, but now I look back and laugh with him! He had a great sense of  humor & I love him!

    253. Sashamxm says:

My father instilled the FORD mustang to me.Growing up he was NAVY and it was just me and him. For the most part anyway. I remember the 1975 green mustang I was pretty young but it made me love the older model vehicles for there curves. Cars are not made like that anymore or last that long nowadays. I worked for a dealership as a female (lot tech/porter) and earned respect with my eye for detail on vehicles coming in and going out.

    257. Elaine says:

Favorite story: Dad making me change my oil…but only once.  Said I needed to know how to do it, “even though it's quicker and easier to just pay someone” like he always did.
Unforgettable memory: The look of terror on his face the first time I drove him anywhere.  He visible braced himself as I turned in front of oncoming traffic thinking I had a protected left turn…but I didn't.  (Whew.)

My favorite memory of my dad and cars has grown over the years. In years past, my dad drove many different “older” cars so that he could pay for my siblings and I to go to college debt free, go on family vacations, and participate in many extra curricular activities. He also had to car pool to work and often borrow cars from other relatives. Last year, for my dad's 50th birthday, he was given a brand new car and it was the most elated he has ever been. He had researched this particular car online for years. Then that day he came home from work to find one with a large red bow in our driveway. Not a day passes that he doesn't tell me how much he loves this car and how “it has no weaknesses.”

My father once saw an old 67 Chevy Pick UP truck sitting in a field. To me it looked as if it were nothing but a rust bucket. He spoke to the property owner and asked if he would sell it.The man said if you get it out of there you can just have it. It took him about 3 months to have it moved, fixed, and ready to drive. My father is no longer with me, but every time I see a 1967 Chevy on the road I just smile and remember my dad and his vision. God rest  his soul!  Thanks for bringing back this memory for me!

Dad had run into the wife of the man who pushed my car out and she asked if I ever got my car fixed…WOW…small town livin' huh!!!  Moral of the story…NEVER lie to your your Dad!!!

My Dad was never very handy when it came to vehicles.  Still to this day, probably 60 plus years after learning how to drive and having countless vehicles over those years, he still defers to auto mechanics.  What he did teach me was to always have a can of Fix-A-Flat on hand in the vehicle, make sure you have enough gas in the tank, and ask the car experts if there is a problem.  On the other hand, My hubby, and a father of four, seems to be able to fix our vehicles, with a little help from the experts.  I hope that our kids are listening when he talks about vehicle maintenance!

The year was 1997 and I was 17 years young. It took over a year but I saved up one thousand dollars for a down payment on a car. I remember waking my dad up on a  Saturday morning, excited to go “pound the pavement” to find my very first car. After countless visits to car lots, there she was, A 1993 Honda Civic. It was love at first site! I can still remeber the feeling of disappointment rushing over me as my father and I walked out of the dealership due to an unressolved agreement concerning the price of the car. With very little wind left in my sails, I woke up the next morning with out a car and thousand dollars to spend. So as the day got longer and time grew shorter I knew it wasn't going to find a car like the civic until I looked out the window. There she was, the same 1993 Honda Civic from the day before, only this time instead of sitting in the dearlership's parking lot she was pulling in to my driveway with my dad behind the wheel! I will never forget the smile on my dad's face and the joy in my heart as I ran out to meet him holding the keys!

    309. Danyeln says:

Before Daddy would let my sister or me get on the road driving we HAD to be able to change a tire.  I remember spending hours in the driveway learning to change a tire.  I was well prepared though.  I can rotate my own tires, change my own oil and fluids, I can even flush and fill my own radiator.  Of course since I am single he still does it for me but I CAN do it if I have to.  lol

My favorite memory of my Dad and cars has to do with an accident.  I was going to drive my brother and his friend through the fields in the “back 40” (acres) so they could go camping in the woods behind the property.  Dad told me very forcefully I was to follow the path his tire tracks had made previously and not go off them one iota.  He didn't want his alfalfa driven over.  Dad was one to hold you to not only the letter of the law,  but also whatever he might have been thinking but forgot to say.  So I went slowly and stayed ridiculously scrupulously to the previous tire tracks.  Problem was,  those tracks had been made by a small toyota truck,  and I was driving a large pick-up.  When I tried to round the bend at the fence post at the corner,  I became very nervous. There was not enough room between me and the fence post.  But I thought Dad certainly would not have steered me wrong,  and I knew better than to let him find any tire tracks on any of his alfalfa.  So I went at zero mph around the corner,  keeping precisely on the path I was on.  Of course, I got stuck against the fence post and dented in his side door.  After the family telling me all day of the awful trouble I was going to be in,  Dad came home and just simply fixed the truck door.  I'll never forget that.

I would say dad lets you, me, & Bessie go fishing..ect..(I was very young. Around 5 or 6.) One morning after arriving to my grandmothers house waiting to go to school, I some how knocked it in neutral and the car began to roll. I was hanging on to the door handle on the outside of the car screaming for my dad. It was dragging me down the hill. My dad came running out the door and lifted the front end of the car off the ground. He thought I was trapped under the car at the time. I will never forget that day! I have a good memory of my former DH and cars…he could fix anything! And whenever anything would break down on the car, or anything around the house for that matter, he'd always smile and say he could fix that for $5. It was the family joke as the yrs went by…no matter what needed repair, Doug could always fix it for a mere $5.

    382. MiniMidgMom says:

Actually, my favorite memory is not of my own father, but of a friend's. He fixed up classic cars and entered them in shows and was kind enough to take my friend and me along with him. We would spend the day at the show and loved it! To this day, I love car shows, my husband does too, and we love to take our own kids.

    383. Annia says:

My favorite memory was my dad taking me shopping for a used car when I was 16. He really tried to please me by finding something both cheap and cute. When I asked him why he wouldn't spend more than 2,000 dollars he said “Because I don't want to cry when it gets wrecked in 6 months.” He was smart. It was totaled within a year- but not due to my fault. Another teen from my school ran right into me. And he didn't get mad or upset. He merely said, “Well, it lasted longer than I expected it to…”

My favorite memory of my dad and cars was when he bought me my first car…we spent more time working on it than driving it. :-)

    390. Cloud9 says:

Favorite memory would have to be going shopping with my dad for my first car. Lord, I didn't think I would ever get a car. My dad is a wheeler/dealer kind of guy and actually enjoys “negotiating” with used car salesmen. At the time it was a nightmare for me, but in the end, I got a good used car.

    391. Brandi says:

my favorite memory is packing the car with my dad before we went on trips as a family.  i loved watching him try to fit all of our stuff into such a small space.

    395. Goodkristen says:

I remember my dad teaching me to drive.  One afternoon following church, he let me drive home, where I proceeded to run his car into a ditch-that was after I had hit a parked car in the church parking lot earlier that day.  Luckily, no one was hurt and the car survived. Needless to say my driving skills have improved but I will never forget those driving lessons from my one and only! Dad

My favorite memory of my Dad and our family car was when he helped me earn one of my Girl Scout Badges.  He showed me basic vehicle maintenance.  Adding windshield wiper fluid, checking the air pressure in the tires, and going through the steps to change a tire.  It didn't seem like much at the time, but I've used those car skills several times in my adult life!  Thanks Dad!

I remember one time I drove through fresh tar on the highway. (Yes, there was a sign posted.) By the time I got home, dad somehow already knew about it and was furious.  He handed me a towel and some gas and told me to clean the car.  What he taught me that day was although I was still at an age where he could still give me guidance (how to clean tar off a car for example), he was no longer going to save me from my bad decisions. He was giving me the gift of independence as a young teenager.  And after I cleaned it, he said “good job.”

My favorite memory would be when my dad “attempted” to teach me to drive a stick shift.  Let's just say I eventually got the hang of it.

    405. Lori H says:

One of my most memorable events was when my dad was taking my sister for a joy ride…his car would only go in reverse…you can imagine how embarassing that could have been for him…and how funny it was to me and my sister.

He sold his prize car to use on a down payment for our first family home. I remember; even as a child; what that must have been like for him. But he did it to better our family. What made it worse was the person he sold it to never took care of it so he had to watch this car turn to junk.

I have so many memories of my dad with cars/trucks/ anything with wheels!!! Like, to teach me how to change the oil in my first car at 16, he made me change the oil in the lawnmower, my car, my moms, car and his truck! However, I think the best memory of all is the day I turned 16 my daddy took me to the DPS office and I failed my test because I couldnt parallell park. So he took me home and parked his big 1 ton diesel  truck beside the barbed wire fence, and several feet up he parked my moms new car along that same barbed wire fence. He then made me learn to parallell park in between those 2 vehicles and the barbed wire fence in my car! I learned REAL quick how to parallell park! Thanks DADDY!!!!! I LOVE YOU!!!!!

My favorite car memory with my dad is when he took me for a drive one Sunday afternoon (I was about 4) in this bright yellow corvette convertible he had gotten – it is memorable because as the second of four children, I rarely got to do anything with just my dad and not my other siblings too plus it was the first time I had ever been in a convertible and I loved the feeling of the air coming into the car! I still remember it vividly!

My father did all the maintenance on our vehicles.  I remember him under the hood or his 69 Chevy Truck (which he later gave to me) and the back end of the his three Volkswagon Bugs.  I loved riding around in those cars and the sound of a VW Bug still brings back memories.  One of my funniest memories was sitting in the back seat of the care when he was teaching my older sister to drive a standard.  I can still see his body jerking back and forth everytime she tried to start off.  We always told him he should have been a head banger!  My dad taught me how to change the oil, oil filter, air filter, ect. so when I met my husband he was impressed that I could do vehicle mainenance and still be very feminine.  I love my father and cherish the many good memories I have of the MANY lessons he and my mother taught me.  I laugh at some of these comments because they too are similar to my memories.

    453. Couponing Mom says:

My Dad didn't have any boys.  So needless to say I was his “boy”!  He used to drag race cars, but when I came along he had to put that on a back burner so he is a muscle car man!   One of my earliest memories is of his old blue nova race car siting in the driveway with all of the sponsor stickers all over it.  That car was so pretty!!!  We always worked on one of his old cars fixing them up in the garage together.  He taught me what all the tools were and practically how to work on the cars, four wheelers, or what have with him.  Those were awesome days that I hope my husband will pass down to my children…….

    454. Jenb says:

My husband is the worst at remembering to take his truck in for a tune-up or oil change, even though the reminder is stuck to the windshield!

    455. Stacy says:

Watching my Dad tinkering with our cars and his “blue bomb” '57 Chevy, gave me interest in learning to “tinker” myself. So, one day I asked him to show me how to do a basic oil change. Unfortunately, lol my Dad was of the OLD school and wouldn't do so. He said, “Girls don't do this sort of thing, that's what your husband will be for when you get married.” It upset me at the time, but when I grew up and got married… his statement gave me the drive to learn to do my own oil changes. lol Unfortunately, my Dad died July 27, 2007… but all the good memories will live on. :)

My best memory is my dad trying to teach me how to drive a stick shift on a mustang with a boss engine…he was very patient, but I never did learn how to drive one.  Then he tried to teach me on a pick up truck…no luck there either.  I just gave up and thanked my lucky stars for automatics.  My dad died in Jan. 2011 unexpectedly and I try to cherish all the memories I have….

My first car was my Dad's.  It was a 1972 Pontiac Grand Prix.  It was that nice shade of '70s gold (like some appliances!).  I loved it because it had a 400 block engine and could out run anyone else's Toyota or Honda.  I must mention that I received this car until 1987.  It ran great and I only had problems once when the battery went dead.  My Dad showed me where to check the oil and I have always loved being around garages.

My favorite car memory with my Dad is of us trying to drive on  the interstate (at a standstill) leaving  out from hurricane with our large wet dog in backseat.  He was at the wheel barely moving a few inches at a time, while I walked along  side the  car giving our dog potty breaks.  We discussed  many times that night, including  auto care.  :)

My father would have me help him change the oil and check fluids.  He also had me keep a small notepad in my car and write down any time I had a repair or oil change, where I got it done at and the mileage. Said it will help with resale and keeping track of when maintenance needs to be done.

    684. Amy L says:

I can still see my dad in knee high, striped tube sock, tank top, shorts and sporting a headband while he changed the oil and filters at our house!  What a sight!  He was always frugal and wise with his money – what a great example!

    685. Olemissmoss says:

I dont remember much as a young child, but as a teenager, my dad always took care of my car when I started driving.  He always checked the oil, gas, tire pressure. He wanted to make sure I was safe.

my favorite memory of my dad was learning to drive.  We went out to practice one Saturday morning, the lesson did not go so well.  When we got home, my dad went next door and came back with his best friend, our neighbor. He announced to the family that I had a new driving instructor, our neighbor. LOL

I really wish I had a memory of my dad and a car but my dad didnt drive and didnt care for cars either but he just died in March and I wish I had some kind of fun memory like that to share….

    696. nc_sunshine says:

I vaguely remember the whole family driving to the Grand Canyon in what we used to call the “yellow monster” — a late 70's station wagon. Back then, I'd ride around in the “way-back” — no seatbelt, lying down, just flopping around while my older siblings set in the back seat. Folks were crazy back then!

My dad used to own a gas station (back in the day–when everyone got full service!)
On Saturdays I would go to work with him.  I did everything–pump gas, check oil, and ride up and down on the car rack!  Good memories!

    699. Nataliejones79 says:

My dad restores old cars so he is always working on something in his garage.  One of my fondest childhood memories is riding his engine hoist up and down.  He would attach a kid size lawn chair to it and let us “ride”.

I am a facebook follower, I think about the times my dad had no one else to help him with the cars even if it was to grab a tool or hold something to make it easier on him,I didnt like to get dirty but I always helped because it was good quality time for us to spend together :) I love my dad!

I remember my parents getting a new car and they were sooooo excited about it, but when I got outside it was the ugliest station wagon I'd ever seen, even uglier than the brown one with the wood side paneling (probably plastic) that they were replacing! LOL, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

One of my favorite memories is my dad teaching me to drive. He said it was important to make your passengers comfortable by driving smoothly.  He put a pack of cards on the dashboard and said I could know I was turning smoothly if the deck didn't slide. I've always had very happy passengers.  :)

    730. April says:

While learning to drive, Dad insisted that I drive our gigantic family van because “if you can drive that well, you can drive anything”. I even had to learn to pull a trailer and parallel park with the van! But Dad is always right…because of those experiences I'm not afraid to drive any type of vehicle and I have never had an accident.

    731. Conversealum says:

My favorite memory of my dad driving was when my sisters and I would complain on road trips about having to go to the bathroom. He would threaten to pull over to the side of the road, because he knew this would make us scream. He loved to push our buttons!

    732. Actoney says:

My favorite memory is when my dad was taking me to my driver's test.  He told me that I was doing a good job and he thought I was ready.  That menat a lot to me!

    733. My favorite memory of my dad with cars, is when we went to buy my first car. I heard endlessly how terrible Chevy's were. Back in his day, Chevys were good vehicles, now a days they are plastic hunks of junks. LOL Tickles me still. My father passed away on April 24th this year at 82 years old. I miss him dearly. This will be my first fathers day without him.

Ok, this one is a gross memory, but so darn funny. We always spent the summers with my dad, and we looked forward to just being around him. Sister and I loved to laugh at Dad's jokes and just his silly demeanor. He looks alot like Chevy Chase, and so you can imagine him in the movie classic, “Vacation”, right? Well, we never encountered any supermodels on the highway, but we did ride up alongside a large man on the back of a flatbell full of inner tubes (we were river rafting), and the man had no clothes on. He was lettin it all hang out, you might say. But rather than tell us to  hide our eyes ( I was like, 10!) , Dad pulls up and tells me to roll down the window and then he yells to the man, “Sure is a tiny pup, ain't it?”  And the man agreed! I could have died laughing. That's my Dad.

My favorite memory of my dad and cars is when I locked my keys in my car during a family vacation at the beach when I was 16, he said he would “save some money” and avoid calling a locksmith, only to break the locks on both the drivers side and passengers side doors.  Not such a big savings after all.
