ways your closet can make you money

Let’s all admit that we have a bit more stuff than we need.  Okay, a lot of stuff!  To help motivate you to clean out all the closets, pantries and cabinets let me help you see some easy ways your closets can make you money.

Old Electronics

That iPad that can longer be updated still has value.  So don’t use it as a fancy paperweight, head to ebay and you can make between $40-$60 from it.  Many other older electronics are in the same boat.  People want them whether they work or not!

 Magazines

You’ll be amazed at what people want to buy online!  If you have a lot of old magazines around, they may have a buyer that wants them.  You can sell all your 2015 Southern Living or Cooks Illustrated magazines and actually make back the cost of your subscription!

Egg Containers, Paper Tubes & Trash (Art Supplies)

While this may not be in your closets, this is definitely somewhere in the house.  Your old egg cartons, toilet paper tubes and many other items in the same categories can be resold in bulk for teachers, churches and other groups doing large art projects.  You could sell 80 toilet paper tubes and 100 paper towel tubes for around $40!  While that may seem crazy, they are things you already use and need, so why not make some money off the part you don’t use.  Don’t forget the old wine bottle corks too…

 Clothing

Donating items you don’t want is great, but you may have some high end clothing that you can actually get paid for.  You can choose to either resell them individually or to let some new online retailers handle them all for.  To sell them on your own look at sites like Tradesy.com  You’ll get to keep 91% of the sale price, which is the highest around.  They cater to name brand clothing that is like new or even brand new.

If you prefer the easy way out, check out ThredUP.com.  They will mail you a postage paid “closet clean out bag” and you fill it with any high end or great condition items you have and mail it back to them.  They will give you money up front for your items whether they sell or not!  They then handle taking pictures, writing reviews and all the shipping to buyers for you.  You earn between 40-60% of the sale price back.

 Purses & Shoes

Don’t think the online sites are just for clothes.  You can resell any accessories, even scarves and sunglasses!  Keep in mind people tend to only want to buy used for big name brands with accessories.  So this is best for the Kate Spade purse or Marc Jacobs sunglasses.  It’s a great way to feed a shoe addiction though, to earn a bit back on ones you don’t wear so you have more to spend on new ones!
