I have a question for all of you wonderful couponing parents out there:
I hear that cloth diapers can really help you save money over the the years if you can stick with it, but doubt that the numbers shown reflect what a couponing parent searching for normal diapers might pay.
So… did anyone else debate between the two and decide one way or another (on an economic level only)? I’d love to hear your opinions.
      Thanks!

      • Sporksoma

I did.  I debated and researched and crunched the numbers and discovered that I would actually spend more on cloth diapers than on disposable diapers, even taking into account the emergency pack of diapers and all that.

I took into account the up front costs for both, but I also took into account my time and effort that cloth diapers would add.  I read about cloth diapers on several different places, read about extra washing, the odds of cloth diaper blowouts, the disposable pads (really?  what’s the difference between using a disposable pad and a disposable diaper?!), etc. and found that it would cost more in time and effort than the disposable diapers cost.

It’s not the same for everyone, though.

      • Anonymous

I opted to use disposable diapers with my kids since the price for them is so reasonable. Jenny did a post about some research that showed that couponing parents don’t really save anything by using cloth…the only way this would be untrue is if you were going to reuse the cloth diapers on more than 2 children. I didn’t become “coupon crazy” until I was pregnant with my 3rd child, so it didn’t make sense for me to start at that point…but if you were on child #1 and planned to have more it would make sense to use cloth. (At $3-4 per pack of disposable I would still choose them for convienence.) I am sure that Jenny has a link to the article on here somewhere. It was very interesting. HTH

      • Julie

I considered both types when pregnant with my daughter for both cost and environmental reasons. Environmentally, disposables end up in landfills but cloth diapers require TON of water to clean, rinse, sanitize etc, which is also a negative impact so to me it really was wash between the two (though I realize not everyone feels that way). As for cost, I am an avid couponer and knew I could buy disposables for a bargain on sale, using coupons and being willing to try different brands (i.e. I love both Target and Publix store brand diapers, and those are usually cheaper than Pampers and Huggies on sale with coupons!)  I agree that unless you plan to re-use the cloth diapering supplies for more than one child then using disposables and shopping sales and coupons would cost less. Especially if you take into account all of that water to properly clean and sanitize cloth..plus soap, vinegar, etc.  After factoring in the ‘yuck’ factor of dealing with cloth diapers, blow-outs, etc. it became a no-brainer for me. I know there are some people who are happy doing a mix of both cloth and disposables…cloth when at home and disposable when out of the house. Keep in mind your baby will be in daycare cloth may not be an option as many do not allow them. Good luck deciding!

        • Julie

oops..meant to say IF your baby will be in daycare. Also remember young babies/infants go through a lot more diapers  simply because they “go” more often. You may use 10-12 diapers a day in the first few months but by the time they are 1-2 years old you may only need 4-6 diapers a day. The bigger diapers cost more but you don’t need nearly as many.

      • JenniferK

We use cloth diapers and rarely use disposables due to medications/bad diaper rash.  I use some of the more expensive cloth diaper because they are easier and similar to disposables (just snap instead of the sticky tabs) and have bought mostly gently used ones and I think I have spent maybe $200 and have enough diapers to wash ever 1.5 days and can use the same diapers from birth to potty training.  Definitely cheaper, even with 1 child.  The washing is fairly cheap, you use mainly cold water and the soap is inexpensive too.

      • Cloth diapering was still the cheapest.  I cared about the environmental aspect too and so my detergent was environmental friendly.  Even with the best deals I have gotten on disposables (yes we do use them occasionally or for sitters etc) the deals I got shopping around (sales and “seconds”) and buying cloth plus the cost of washing ended up being way less.  Glad I decided that too because my girl had a sensitive bottom and that limited my diaper choices (ironically to about the cheapest diapers one can find from Aldis).  Plus we plan to have another child so the savings compounds there.  It was a no-brainer for me.

I have 1 of the $10 off Enfamil coupons that I would be willing to trade for either Gerber Goodstart formula coupons/checks or Diaper and/or wipe coupons. Email me if interested at steveparkfan30@msn.com.

I would love the enfamil coupons. I have the diaper wipe insert coupons.

I’ve got an email from Babies’r us for their 3 day sale and it had an $7 pampers coupon. I don’t know if anyone receives emails from Babies r us but, you can use that coupon at Bi-Lo and get a box of pampers for about $13. Which is a great deal.

      • Brigitte

Do you know if walmart will price match that?

    • Mom_4_Him

I have used both cloth diapers and disposable diapers.  The initial cost for cloth is higher, but over all, I honestly think they are comparable.  However, the time invested in cloth is substantial, and you need to figure in the cost of the water/soap/vinegar, etc.  With baby #7 due in March, I am probably going the disposable route.  I just wish the “green” diapers were more absorbant!!.

    • Tlh

Are the luvs at amazon a sale price, or were you just listing the best available price? Thank you!

    • Sarahbeth1210

I have Publix coupons for Good Start, Enfamil and Similac(I think).  I don’t use formula, so if you want them you are welcome to them.  I really would like the Kand Clark Rebate for Publix, so if you have extras and are willing to trade, please let me know.  You can email me at sarahbeth1210@hotmail.com

My bi-lo has a fuel perks .20c for $15 purchase of huggies diapers. They are on sale for $9.49. If you get 2 and use 2 $2.00 little movers man coupons and 2 $2.00 publix coupons you get them for $5.49 ea plus .20c in fuel perks. I got them for baby shower gifts.

    • Daisy6441

I discovered I can buy a double sized container of Similac formula at Sams Club for $28 versus the regular size for $22 elsewhere.

      • Christipie

You can get the double size at BJs for $26 and they will also take Similac coupons and checks.  I used to get the $5 off checks so I only paid $21 for a huge can that lasted over a week!!  If you have a BJs.

Does it seem like diaper deals aren’t as great as they used to be?  It seems like I used to get them for $4 or $5 for a jumbo pack with coupons and sales just a year or so ago.

Any opinions on which diaper and wipes deals are the best?  I really don’t even know how many diapers come in a family pack or a box etc.

      • Candace

I like Huggies wipes b/c you can tear them in half for just a wet diaper change, and Huggies higher priced diapers (Little Snugglers for tiny babies, then Little Movers), but if you are like me, once they get about a year old it’s not as important that they have super-soft diapers.  If you are looking for value and don’t have coupons I’ve found that the Walgreens brand works pretty well in diapers, and at Fred’s there’s one called Fitti, that has wetness indicators like the more expensive brands.
