My favorite printer is on sale this week at Office Depot!  You can grab the Brother HL-2240 printer for $59.99 shipped (or pick it up at a local store).

This is a black & white laser printer that can print up to 700 sheets with the toner it comes with.  Then you can replace the toner for around $20-$30 with a high yield drum that prints thousands of sheets!

Another reason to switch, besides the massive savings on ink, is that coupons printed with laser printers tend to scan without issues in most stores.  Ink-jet printers are known for uneven ink printing that really doesn’t work well with the new bar code on printable coupons.

I redeemed my worklife rewards this week. I have this printer and needed toner cartridges.  There is a sale buy 2 get 1 free of OD brand toner….BUT, they don’t carry OD brand of this toner, so it gave me the Brother brand at b1g1, and I used my worklife rewards and I went through ebates too.  I got three toner cartridges (the 360 large size) for 52.  shipped to my home (minus the ebates discount.   I had 85 dollars in worklife rewards from all that coffee I got before Christmas.  Hope that makes sense and helps others.

      • Toni

Sorry, the brother toner brand was B2G1 free, NOT b1g1 free. I messed up. Sorry.

        • Alison

I wish I knew that – I used my OM rewards on the Brother toner as they didn’t have a OM version. Now I’ll know to use OD as they’ll sub the sale. Thanks for sharing!

          • Toni

I purchased online. It didn’t say anywhere online that they would substitute. I tried to order Office Depot brand, but they didn’t carry it, so I just put the Brother brand in my cart, and the sale followed it.

    • Summerpoppe

      Is this printer wireless?

      • Kcgardner

don’t think so…wireless is what i am looking for as well

      • No. I would love a laser printer, but I also want the scanner and I’d rather not separate them. There is a Brother inkjet on sale for $59 that I think I am going to buy. MacOS 10.7 + Epson printer = coupons dot com FAIL. They print at 25% of their size and don’t scan.

        • Anonymous

Forget the inkjet. With the money you’ll save on ink in just the first year you could buy a top-of the line flatbed scanner.

      • Stephanie

This one is not.  They make a model that is, but this isn’t it.

    • Kcgardner

would love to get this or another recommended printer but WIRELESS if anyone knows of any that are on a great sale……????

      • Alexusrydr

I bought this printer but in the wireless version-Brother HL-2270 DW.  I’ve had it for about 1 1/2 years and have changed the toner once (and I print alot of coupons).  It is great and I would recommed it to anyone.  So much better than my expensive inkjet one (with expensive ink).  Last week Staples had buy 2 toners and get $20 giftcard.  I used Stapes Rewards so ended up getting it very cheap.

        • This looks good. Office Depot has a program that you can trade in your old printer and save an additional $50 on printers with original prices of $199.99 or more. This printer is only sold online though.

    • Linda3

I have this printer and love it.   I just wish I knew where to buy toner cartridges for it without having to pay $70 – $80.  I don’t care about getting into refills.  Right now, mine has stopped because it says I need a new drum, and I have priced it at around $110.00.  Does anyone have a source for supplies for it?  Thanks!

      • I just ordered a toner cartridge and drum from Amazon for a little over $25. I qualified for free shipping over $25.

      • We get ours on EBAY.  Works great and costs around $20.

      • Anonymous

Drums usually last 12,000 copies and if you run out of toner just shake the cartridge and youll get about 100 more copies. I do it every time its out of ink and have gotten more than 500 copies after running out of ink.

        • MarySC

I bought a toner refill kit for about $5 on eBay. The instructions were great and it is working like new. I guess you have to get a new cartridge after refilling a couple of times.

    • We bought the HL 2270DW around Thanksgiving.  It’s the same printer but wireless.  It typically sells for around $140 but we caught a great sale and picked it up for $79.  The toner that comes with it (starter toner) lasted us until just last week which is fantastic.  We bought replacement toner online for about $20 and should get close to 3,000 prints at least.  It’s definitely the way to go to save on ink if you print lots of coupons.

The wireless version kicks serious butt. It also has a secret feature which can be very, very valuable to couponers. Have you discovered it yet?

        • Iloveuf

          I just bought the Brother 2280DW. What’s the secret?? ( :

        • Wendicuster

I’d like to know the secret too!

        • Anonymous

The “secret” is: if you have two computers in your home, say a desktop and laptop, each connected wirelessly to this printer, you can print coupons separately from each. So if there is a print limit of two, you can print two with one computer, four with two, six with three, et cetera.

Use this technique to stock up, but don’t abuse it!

          • BCT

Wouldn’t this work with any printer or am I misunderstanding? The trick is to have more than one computer. Did I miss what you were trying to say?

            • Renny

              It does work w/any printer.

            • Julie

Yeah, we were already doing this previously too. Printing from each computer. I don’t think the wireless gets you anything extra..?

            • BCT

              I agree.

            • Anonymous

Having more than one computer is required to print multiple sets, but it’s the wireless connection that makes this practical. I don’t know whether you could do this with a wired printer, but the hassle of disconnecting and reconnecting the printer would make it a waste of time for all but the most high-value coupons.

I mean you could just print another set at work or a friend’s house or Kinko’s but that is kind of a waste of time in my opinion.

I’m sure there is a technical explanation for why this works, but the point is it does.

            • BCT

I do this now with another wireless printer and before that with a shared printer. I have three computers at home. I’ve had this working for a while. I thought you were talking about something else.

      • Noglesby

Thanks I will be looking for this if it goes on sale again.

    • Akhuburn

I just bought the Brothers MFC-J430w Wireless at Office Depot for 59.99, and this week youg et a free personal handheld Labeling System. (19.99 value). I am looking forward to using it.

      • Noglesby

when was this? is it much different from this printer?

        • Keith

the j430w is an inkjet, not a laser, and is an all-in-one printer, scanner, copier, fax

          • Noglesby

hey keith got your msg thanks did this price just past? or can I still get it at this price?

    • If you put a piece of black electrical tape over the eye that senses the ink, this printer will print on the first cartridge for years. :) It told us the first cartridge was out after only a few months, I read about using the tape trick and a year later, it is still printing fine.

      • Stephanie

        Works like a charm!!

      • Do you have the 2240 or the 2140?

      • Doug

I just went and purchased this printer…been waiting on it to go on sale again.  The inkjet we have goes through ink way too fast.  Exactly where is the eye that senses ink?  I read about the trick, but for the life of me I have no idea where it goes haha.  Thanks.

        • Guest

I put the black tape on the black holder that the toner cartridge sits in, not the actual toner cartridge – not sure if that is what others do.  The eye is the hole on both of the short sides of the holder about in the middle.  You’ll see that it lines up with the holes on the sides of the toner cartridge.  Hope that makes sense.

        • SarahR

Check out Youtube, there is a video on how to block the sensors.  I did it and have been using the original cartridge for months.

      • Neseven

where is the “eye” you mentioned?

    • Teachalhd

Can you use it to print pictures as well?

      • Yes, but it is a black and white printer.

      • Stephanie

This is a monochrome printer, so probably only if you want black and white photos…

      • guest

Why not get photos printed at the drugstores or Walmart for 10-15 cents a photo vs printing them yourself at home? The pictures will look better, last longer, and its much cheaper (when you factor in the cost of ink for an inkjet).

We have a monochrome laser printer, and I would not recommend printing black and white pictures on it. Coupons and text come out fine, but photos would not come out well enough (with all the different shades of grey, etc).

    • I thought about buying this the previous times this sale has been posted, but I think I am going to buy an AirPrint enabled printer. That allows you to print from Apple wireless devices. Coupons dot com has an app that supports AirPrint. So, my iPhone will be a second computer.

    • Stephanie

I received this printer as a Christmas gift and I love it!!!  :)

    • Mamadaley

This came just in time, our last one died and were desperately needed a new one!!!

    • Rjvdw

If the Brother HL 2270DW comes up on sale I will definitely buy it, but unfortunately this one (the 2240) doesn’t have wireless, and I print coupons from 5 computers!  I hope the other one goes on sale soon!

      • guest

the 2270 is on sale at staples at $99.99 this week

    • Iloveuf

for anyone needing wireless connectivity, 2 weeks ago at Staples we got the Brother 2280DW for $99 ($149-$50 trade-in credit for recycling an old printer)..it is a step up or two up from this one and has a scanner and the built-in networking and wireless. (It’s on sale this week at Office Max and Office Depot for $130.)

      • lovedbyGod2

that’s a good point – I do like the fact that my current printer has a scanner.

    • Ltilda

I was told to push the READY button 6 times when it says you need to replace toner.  No need to use tape and it works perfectly.  This way you use all toner and none is wasted. :)

    • Kaba1174

      is it wireless?

    • Kristie

I was looking at buying the Brother MFC-J5910dw wireless printer that is on sale for $129.99.  It mentions saving an additional $50 for a trade-in.  Does anyone know how this works?  Do I just bring my old printer to the store and they automatically take the $50 off?  Thanks for your help.

      • Julie

We bought the Brother 2280DW at Staples 2 weeks ago and it also had an additional $50 off for recycling a printer. I didn’t want to give up our old printer until the new one was hooked up and working so we bought the printer, came home and hooked it up then took back our old printer a few days later to recycle it. All we had to do was bring the receipt from the purchase of the new printer and they “returned” it then re-rang it including the $50 additional discount. I asked someone at the store about this to make sure they would do it this way and they said no problem. Didn’t have to bring the new printer back for the “return” to get the credit either.

    • BCT

I think I’m going to get it and turn it wireless but hooking it up to my router or sharing it. Will see if that works for me! Thanks Jenny!

      • Lana

My techie hubby said that will not work with this printer.  I just ordered a wireless one from Amazon and paid with Swagbucks giftcards.

      • BCT

Did he say why? I can understand why hooking it up to a router might not work. Not all printers can do that but I should be able to share it. I have had two other non-wireless printers that I have been able to share. Is there something special about this one? Let me know.

    • Pauladeshazo

I love mine…but now I want the wireless. Great buy!

      • Is it good? I am thinking about buying one because of the great price, but I’m pretty afraid to spend so little. I have did it once before and I was not satisfied. What about wireless, are they better? Never had one before.
        Thanks!

        • Alexusrydr

the wireless one is the HL-2270dw.  I bought it on sale for $79 from Staples and I love it.  My other printer (an expensive inkjet) hardly gets used anymore

        • Snowdogmom

I also purchased the 2270DW because I wanted wireless. I’ve had it since November and love it. I use it for all my B&W printing including a lot of coupons and I’m still using the starter ink cartridge. So much better on ink than my inkjet printer and prints much faster. I love it. I got it on sale plus Staples had a 20% coupon so you should be able to get for $79 if you watch for sales. The 2240 is usually on sale for $49.99.

    • Debra

I have had this printer for a year and it is one of the best printers that I have ever had. I use this printer mostly for printing coupons, because I have another printer that I use for other things. I haven’t had any problems since I have bought it. I would definately agree with Jenny that it is a nice printer for the price,.

    • Ilandgrl102000

Love this printer… i would say when you buy the toner make sure you get the DR-420 high yield, you will get more prints, that cartridge is close to 50.00 at  Staples… anyone know anywhere else to get it cheaper???

      • Guest

Jenny posted a deal recently where if you go through EBATES you would get 27% cash back plus 10% off at 4injets. I purchased the non OEM TN450 High Yield Toner for $30.99 with the cash back net cost is $22.63. The drum non OEM is $44.99 with cash back net cost is $32.85. You have to replace the drum every so often but not as often  as the toner, check your manual. Shipping was free. I’m trusting the non OEM toner will work okay, they say they give a 100% satisfaction guarantee. I guess I will see. I just wanted to make sure I had a replacement on hand when my starter toner ran out. I’ve had the 2270DW since November and I love it for B&W printing. I figured if Jenny uses the non OEM from 4inkjets and hasn’t had a problem I’d give it a try. This deal according to Jenny runs about 4 times a year. If anyone has found a better price someplace else I’d be very interested in knowing where and what the price they paid was. I just think ink costs can be pretty ridiculous.  If anyone has had issues with the Brother compatible products from 4inkjets I’d like to hear about that also before I use the ones I ordered.

    • Where do you get a good price on the toner? My son got me this printer for Christmas and so far I love it, but the price I’ve found on the toner is rather high.

    • Jamie

Does anyone know if this printer will work with a MacBook Pro?

      • Guest

The 2270DW wireless model does so assume this one would also. I have the 2270DW and use it with my MacBook Pro wirelessly.

    • queenseye70

      Jenny,
Where are you getting the ink for $20-$30.

      • Jtdjagos

I just got the ink I ordered on ebay for $8.50 shipped-it is the toner refill and took a few minutes to dump the old  toner and pour in the new toner.

    • Anonymous

Office Depot also advertises a free Brother label maker when you buy it (in store probably). Used a $10/50 mailer I got from OfficeMax and look forward to having coupons that actually scan now!

    • Chrissy

Don’t forget if you buy this in store you also get the FREE ($20 value) brother P-touch personal handheld labeling system.   Picked mine up today! :)

    • Toner generally is cheaper when you’re printing a lot of stuff! Ink is just good if you want more colourful and detailed documents…toner is the way to go for printing coupons.

    • Kcgardner

the upgraded and WIRELESS version of this is on sale at office depot for $129.99, which Staples price matched and also gave the $50 off if you recycle an old printer (VERY old, in my case), making the grand total including tax $87 dollars! LOVE the wireless capability and this upgraded version has a scanner and copier (all in one, but is not color)! Woot:)

      • Kcgardner

oh yeah, it is the Brother HL2 280DW in case you are wondering…

    • I am Hooked on Totally free Sample Products I actually feel just like a child! For my age thats saying a lot!! I would definitely enjoy to reveal a website I found named CouponQlik that gives you many useful free products and printable coupons!! Just click on my name to get the details Cheers!
