Heads up for CVS shoppers that the Green Bag Tag program is ending at CVS. With the program, you were able to earn ECBs for bringing in reusable bags and having your Green Bag Tag scanned.

The tags are no longer available for purchase, but if you have on you can still use it for now. The program will end later in 2013.

CVS will instead be focusing on other programs that they feel will have a greater impact on the community.

See all of the current CVS deals.

Phooey! Used mine every time. :(

    • Brooke

      Bummer!

    • Shenna

      I loved this program. :(

    • esyke623

Figures. I have made over $50 free dollars using it, though, so I guess my faithful little leaf had a good run!

    • tori729

“CVS will instead be focusing on other programs that they feel will have a greater impact on the community.” Ha! Also known as “the economy sucks, we’re losing money, and we can’t afford this program anymore.” Same as the “new” pharmacy/prescription program and the severe lack of deals lately. Sad days man, sad days.

      • Melissa

        I agree 100%!

      • they want us to be loyal, looks like they are not going to be so loyal to us.There are other program, I happen to like CVS and have been loyal for years, but there are other deals and stores to shop at. Wake up CVS.

    • yourbilletdoux

Sad to hear but I’m actually happier with the new pharmacy program. The old one didn’t work for me since we have Federal BCBS and this one does.

I also think part of the reason they are rethinking this is because the cashiers sometimes scan mine when I don’t even have a bag,

      • mcleodsc

Now if they could hire enough competant pharmacy peopleQ

        • SCkat

Well, I’ve heard they are a horrible pharmacy to work for, so maybe they have a hard time getting good pharmacists for that reason.

          • Meesh

SCkat: I’ve heard the same thing and refuse to use them as my pharmacy.

            • Missy

I’ve worked in a CVS pharmacy previously and can attest to the fact that they are a terrible company to work for. They do not value their employees but in this economy employees are just happy to find a job. Wages are good but work environment is poor.

        • anna marie

THERE PHARMACY PRICES ARE TO HIGH ANY WAY.A $4.OO PRESCRIPTION AT KROGERS COST ABOUT $13-$18 @CVS.

    • Kathy

I hope they’re stocked up on plastic bags. It looks like I’ll be using theirs for my husbands lunch bags when it ends. I always used my reusable bag.

      • angela

why not continue to use the reusable bag? just because you won’t get rewarded for it is no reason to stop doing your part to help the environment.

      • traci0322

Agreed, why on earth would you not continue to use a reusable bag? Bizarre.

        • Kathy

I always use my reusable bags at the grocery stores but every now and then I leave them in the car and get them to put them in plastic so I can have them for my husband’s lunch. Now I can just use CVS bags instead and always take my reusable bags into the grocery store. I need plastic bags at home for things might as well be theirs. They are more sturdy than the ones at the grocery store.

        • yazpistachio

I do the same thing, Traci. Plastic bags can be recycled at home for other uses just as easily as taking them to a center– or avoiding them.

    • Susie

Darn, I used that every time. It was easy money!

    • tjvsmom

Does anyone know when it will end?

    • Beth

A cashier told me that a couple weeks ago. I was hoping it wouldn’t actually happen. I’ve made about $25 just by using mine when I can remember to bring it!

    • couponmagic

Mine never worked right. I only got it once every 8 trips instead of once every 4

    • Elizabeth

Too bad. I always remember to use this and have saved a lot this way.

    • Elizabeth

I emailed CVS about this last month and this is what they came back with. I wanted let you know the Green Bag Tag program is still running. I am sorry for the confusion. We are not stopping the Green Bag Tag program any time in the near future.

    • mcleodsc

I posted this on the CVS facebook page and will repost here. Several weeks ago I heard that they were going to end the program but would honor those green tags already in use. I went to my CVS and tried to purchase one ( to have in case I ever lost mine which has happened before). The manager would not sell me the tag and said she must have missed those hanging by the register. She stated that they were all being recalled because of the sharp edges. I find it strange that a manager was informed that they were being recalled when it was on several blogs that they were ending the program. I hate to think that she is a liar but if “it quacks like a duck-then it is a duck”!

      • Brooke

If you have an iPod or iPhone you can download the card star app. Punch the number from the back of the tag in and then you’ll have you back up tag for free.

    • dtcox1

well i guess it was nice while it lasted

    • lucybell

A cashier told me recently that they would not be selling them anymore. If you already have one, you could still use it. She said that CVS was loosing too much money with this program.

I went into the store in Hillview ,Ky about a month ago to purchase a green tag,I finally remembered, and the cashier told me the program had ended unless you already had a tag. Oh well…story of my life.

    • spi_cy13

      OMG! Really CVS? :( Rubbish!

    • the green bag tags are ment for people using reusable bags but to many people are using the tags and want plastic bags. once again people abusing the rules mess every one up:(

      • acmurphy

This is exactly what my CVS cashier told me last week! Such a shame!

      • Christine

I have told the cashier NOT to put things in plastic bags, when my purse is large enough for what I have, and they still give me a plastic bag. I blame the system, not us awesome, green couponers!

    • Renda

This is sad. I always used mine. I’d even have to remind the cashiers not to put my stuff in a plastic. If I was purchasing just a couple of items, I wouldn’t even bother with s reusable bag, I’d just carry the items out in my hands.

    • well, it was nice of them to offer it for any length of time….I am grateful. However, if they were losing money on it…they could have increased the amount of times used in order to get the ECB reward….for example, instead of 4 times…could increase it to 10 times. Just a thought.

      • mbschwartz

        That’s what i was thinking

    • crystalgoodwin3

All good things seem to come to an end eventually. I can see how they were losing money on these. I plastic bag certainly didn’t cost them 25 cents. I’ve made lots of money on that 99 cent purchase. I’ll be sure to use it until they stop taking it.

    • crystalgoodwin3

In case anyone wants one, they are selling for $4 and up on Ebay.
But unless you shop at CVS alot of days every week, you might not make your money back.

    • torrend

CVS tends to be overpriced anyway, trying to buy their “normal” stuff, even their sale stuff.

    • AshleyAshley

Sad to hear they’re phasing it out, glad that I have one! Let’s hope CVS is still competitive for our business as lots of businesses are finding ways to reduce their generosity toward customers.

    • A CVS employee told me about this a few weeks ago. I can’t remember the numbers he gave me, but he said that a small percentage of customers used the problem. The large majority of those using the program were CVS employees.

      • tiptip82

sounds to me like they just needed toadvertise it better then. The only way I undout was when they offered me a free bag tag as one of my magic coupon machine offers and I asked an employee what it was talking about.

    • stacyr

A CVS cashier told me it was because a boy got hurt when he stuck himself with the ‘green leaf’ and that is why it’s being pulled.

      • mcleodsc

Please share this on the CVS facebook page. They need to get their story straight-recall or not?

    • almsw119

Sad. They changed the prescription refill program also :( recently. However, I always see people use plastic bags with the green bag, and I had a cashier bag stuff in plastic and then put it in my green bag!

    • shecoupons

the bag tag thing was not ever going to work considering every time i used it the cvs employee would offer me a bag anyway! The employees did not stay true to the program.

    • Michelle123

I happen to be a CVS employee and from my own experiencing dealing with customer after customer sometimes people tend to forget that they scanned a green bag tag and give the customer a bad. I sometimes even end up asking a customer for their CVS card twice, it can get very hectic. But I do agree that they should not be getting rid of this program but complaining about it on this site will do no good. If everyone calls in to the 1-800-shopcvs and gives a comment about this they just might take all of yalls advice into consideration. CVS supposedly takes pride in customer service so lets see if they really do.

    • vwt57

Grateful we had it as long as we did. I love CVS! My store is so very customer friendly.

FYI, this program stopped working on 3/30/13 and stopped showing up on receipts 3/31/13. Check ’em.
