      55/2 Carnation Milk SS 9/22

    • hoover37

Will Dollar general let you use 5 “like” coupons, Don’t shop there much and was wondering???

      • Varn9899

no if they are all “printables” they will not however if they come from inserts like those on the weekends YES

    • Barbara

I bought 10 Carnation and tried to use 5 of the $.55/2 and the register wouln’t take any of them. The manager said it was because the register was applying a $.50 discount to eac item. Has anyone else been able to use coupons with the Buy 10 get $5 off?

      • mcleodsc

The manager is wrong. You have to ring up two Carnations then scan .55/2 coupon, then ring up the next two and the coupon… I am in the process of drafting a letter to corporate about this very issue. If DG is not going to replace their registers then the managers and cashiers need to be trained exactly how to ring up the coupons if it is a $/multiple items or if the customer has multiples of the same coupon. Next time match your coupons to the items and INSIST the cashier scan the matching coupon after the items.

        • Barbara

          Thanks, I’ll try that.

        • Deidre Gary

I wish I had read this before I went to the store. They would only take one..

        • Ashleigh Morin

Wish I had known this! Just went today and the lady said it wouldn’t take my coupon because it had already applied a coupon meaning the $5 off 10 items. I tried telling her this is a manufacturers coupon and not a store so it should work.

    • Donna

I bought 8 Carnation and 2 of the Crisco today. I had 4 of the .50/2 and had to wait quite a bit while they had to call their manager on the phone but it finally worked out. I wish I had read mcleodsc before i went to the store so I could have suggested that. As it was the girl told me they would ‘flag’ her – as in a disciplinary action but she would document the transaction and her phone call. They do need to get it together there.

    • Toni

Yep. I had trouble at DG, too. They refused to take my coupons for the evaporated milk. In doing so, they violate their own coupon policy and they caused me to waste my gas and time driving all the way to their store which is 15 miles from my house. I did not buy anything, out of principle, because they didn’t honor their coupon policy. This particular DG has done this before–I now remember.
They said to me that the scan-able codes on my coupons were not scan-able and therefore unacceptable according to their coupon policy, which states that a coupon must have a scan-able code. Thsi is an ignorant game with words. The scan-able codes on the coupons ARE able to be scanned, even if their cash register refuses to accept the coupons. The problem is not with the coupons being devoid of scan-able codes; the problem is with their cash registers that are being programmed to reject these coupons when an item is on sale. That being the case, they mislead customer and waste their time and gas when they do not say in their coupon policy, “Coupons cannot be used on sale items.”

      • Toni

I have some important updated information for couponers shopping at DG. If you are having trouble couponing at DG, know that DG means well but doesn’t know how to get their cash registers to accept legitimate coupons while rejecting fraudulent ones. As a result, I have found that their registers which have been programmed to be highly sensitive are so sensitive that they are often rejecting legitimate coupons if the coupon is being used on a sale item.

If an item in on sale at DG, a coupon may or may not work on that item because, even though the coupon is legitimate and appropriate for that item, and even though the customer may still have to pay money out of pocket for the sale item even after the coupon is applied, the cash registers in all the stores (I am in Florida) have been programmed to reject coupons. I have found that they usually reject coupons on sale items. It was explained to me today that the reason the stores reject legitimate coupons is that (1) customers have successfully “redeemed” fraudulent coupons that the store will never be reimbursed for, and this has been such a problem that over time the store has continued to make their registers more sensitive in an effort to prevent coupon fraud; (2) if a store pushes through a coupon that the cash register has rejected, then the store will never be reimbursed by the manufacturer for that coupon (because store computers won’t have a record of scanning that coupon).

        How did I learn this?
        Well. . .

I contacted corporate this week because I had tried unsuccessfully, like many of you, to use three coupons on 10 cans of Nestle evaporated milk. Each coupon in turn was rejected by the cash register. (One coupon had been clipped from a newspaper insert and the other two coupons had been printed from the internet, so it didn’t matter what was the coupon’s immediate source.) The district manager called me today to ask what my trouble was and to apologize for my inconvenience. He offered to make it worth my while to help him with an experiment. I had shared with him what I had read from another blogger who had written that one must scan two of the Nestle cans and then immediately scan the coupon that applies to them, before scanning any more cans. The blogger wrote that if one waits until the tail end of the transaction to scan the coupons (after the “$5 off 10 cans” deal is applied), the coupons will not work. The district manager asked me if I would be willing to conduct an experiment in order for him to see if it (what I was saying about the order of scanning things) would work. He felt that if there was a way to work the system so that coupons would scan, he wanted to know what it was. He said if there was a certain scanning order that worked, he would notify corporate and also train his stores so that they could better please their customers. I agreed to help with the experiment. I drove back to the store with a coupon in hand, and put 9 Nestle milk cans (on sale for $1.00 each) and one powdered sugar in my cart (the deal required that I buy 10 of a set selection of items). At the register, the manager scanned only two cans of mik and then scanned the newspaper insert’s manufacturer’s coupon that was for 55 cents off two cans. The cash register rejected the coupon. The manager typed the information (the coupon number) in manually. Still the register rejected the coupon. I was surprised. I asked the manager if the milk was already on sale at $1.00/can, even before the “$5 off 10” deal was applied, and she said yes, that it was normally $1.29/can. She said the reason the register rejected the coupon was that the cans were already on sale EVEN BEFORE the extra $5/10 deal would go into effect at the end of the transaction. The manager explained to me that coupons sometimes work and sometimes don’t work on sale items. She explained that if she were to push the coupon through manually, the store would never be reimbursed for that coupon. She explained that coupon fraud was the reason that computer people had programmed DG’s cash registers to be so sensitive.

It is a shame that there are a few people out there who are liars and cheats, making fraudulent coupons. It hurt us all.

I wonder if DG could train their employees how to recognize fraudulent coupons, doing this instead of programming their cash registers to reject legitimate coupons on sale items. I think there are more honest coupons out there than there are fraudulent ones, and it would be a shame to lose the business of many couponers simply because of a few thieves. I don’t know–perhaps my idea is impractical; maybe it is not really possible to spot and identify all fraudulent.

If DG cannot program their computers to accept legitimate coupons on sale items, I wish they would modify their coupon policy to say that coupons are not always accepted on sale items. That way, couponers would not feel frustrated against Dollar General. DG needs to understand that couponers comparison shop after reading sale ads and coupon policies when planning their shopping trips. They head out to stores expecting to pay a certain price after sale and coupons, and choose what stores to go to, what coupons to print, and what items to buy, based on these calculations (calculations based on store coupon policies, store ads, and comparison shopping). Stores will lose business if couponers are frustrated after wasting time, gas, and printer paper and ink because they trusted in a store’s inaccurately-written coupon policy.

After this afternoon’s initial experiment, I thought I’d experiment some more, because some have said that the store I was at had more sensitive registers than other stores in my county. For the second experiment, I wanted to see if cash registers at more than one store would reject a manufacturer’s coupon used on a sale item. I attempted to buy a Reynold’s aluminum foil at the store I was already at. The foil was on sale for $2.75, and I used a coupon for $1.00 off. The register rejected the coupon. So I went to another town and shopped at their DG, and their cash register rejected the Reynold’s foil coupon as well.

The cashier at the second store pushed the coupon through, and I knew that her store would never be reimbursed for that coupon.

Sad for both us couponers and for DG.

    • pam

when I went to dg the Heinz homestyle gray had coupon on them under label 1.00 off of two. turkey kind. On dg wedsite there a coupon for5.00 off 25.00 on friday

    • When I went to DG to buy the Carnation milk, my coupons would not scan either. The register displayed a message that the coupon could not be used because the item was on sale. But, when she rang my Sundown vitamins, which are BOGO, the register took two coupons. I can only deduce that they will accept coupons for regular sale items, but not for items that have an additional promo attached to them. This was disappointing, and I left without the milk.
