state fair

It’s almost the time of year where many states host their annual state fairs, with rides and fried foods and cows and art exhibits and more. It’s a super fun event to gather with friends and family for a memorable day while reveling in state pride.

I know all state fairs will be a little different, but by going off of my experience, you probably spend a lot of time looking at art and photography and baked goods made by people within your state who are competing for prizes or simply that beloved blue ribbon.

Did you know that it’s really easy to enter things into the fair? It is! Adults and children alike can enter items in lots of various categories. And if you’re in South Carolina, you can enter items for FREE until September 1st. After 9/1, the entry fee is $25.

If you’re in South Carolina, check out the SC State Fair’s website for more information on how to enter, what the guidelines are, where and when to drop off your exhibits, and more. Here are some of the categories you can enter (and there are lots of subcategories within these as well):

-Fine Art
-Student Art
-Agriculture
-Flowers
-Home & Craft
-Beef Cattle
-Dairy Cattle
-Dairy Goat
-Sheep
-Small Stock
-Swine
-Youth Horse

Get your kids to enter exhibits into the fair: they will potentially learn more about your state in the process, it gives them a goal, and the fair will be even more exciting than usual.  Plus if they win they get a small check (in our state $8).

Note: there are some categories that will not display every exhibit entered into the fair (sometimes thousands of people enter in one category), so your fair’s website should tell you how they will handle exhibits that aren’t selected to be displayed. Remember, each state will vary on what categories and competitions are available.

Other Fair Entry Deadlines:
Georgia National fair last day to enter is 9/17
North Carolina State Fair last day to enter is 9/19
North Florida Fair  last day to enter is 9/19

Have you or your kids ever entered anything in the fair?
