I was searching around for a deal on tax programs and stumbled upon Free Tax USA.  The more I read about it, the more I love it!  It has great reviews and the price is hard to beat.

Federal Taxes including filing is FREE for anyone, even small business or self employed.  If you need state taxes filed, that’s $9.95 including filling.  That blows the other programs out of the water in cost.

I’m always a little worried to try a new program for taxes, so I started a return with our old standby and with this (both are free to start but the old standby charges $39 once you file or print).  I got the exact same numbers with both programs, but will gladly save the $40 and go with the free option!

If you haven’t filed yet, it’s worth checking out.

    • Squinkle99

I think you mean “the price IS hard to beat”. :)

    • flower_mom

I’ve used free tax usa for the past 2 years.  I efile federal for free and mail in my state one for the cost of a stamp.

    • Whammy84

taxhawk is from same company, but federal & state are free. If you previously used freetaxusa, you can even log in with your same info on taxhawk & save $10

      • ran

If fed & state are free, what are you saving $10 on?

        • Whammy84

Freetaxusa charges $9.95 for state filing & free for federal filing.  Taxhaw is free for state & federal filings.

    • Bamabobbie

I wonder if you can print state and federal returns and file?  I don’t like to efile.  Like to print and mail my return.

      • Henaomiller

you can usually print them and then still efile or go with the mailing. I have used taxact.com, you dont have to buy any thing. the last three years and love it. have paid 9.95 to 23.95 to file, which fed is free then pay to do the state.

        • Bamabobbie

Thanks for the info.  May try it on mine this year.

If you prefer H&R Block software, I got a great deal at Target last week. They are running an unadvertised $10 gift card promotion WYB the Deluxe at home versions for $44.99. There was a $10 manu q on a flyer in the 01/29/11 paper, a $10 target q on their website, and there’s a $10 MIR current promotion. $4.99 is a great price for me

      • Hairxpert4

can i use this if i am separated filing single and for half of last year i had my own small business with handwritten records of sales?

      • Hairxpert4

nevermind, i cant find the 10 off flyer in my 1/29 paper. was that this years right? cuz u wrote 2011.:)

    • Allyson Reed

WE LOOOOOVE FREETAXUSA!! i’ve been using it for years!

    • Ncrockhound

I did my taxes at the TurboTax website. It’s free to low income people. They didn’t even charge to e-file my federal and state returns.

    • Blackvelvet49

That’s excellent! For now I’m sticking with TaxAct. Since I’m a returning customer I’m only paying $13.99 for Federal Deluex and State both efiled. It’s nice having the info from last year being imported into this year’s return. I save so much on everything else I don’t mind the $14 to have both efiled together. So much simpler.

    • tbrown

I’ve been using Freetaxusa for years now. I am pleased with it and have suggested it to others…

    • Jlaleonard

TurboTax freedom edition is Free for low income people and you can e-file your State and Federal both for Free for certain states. It is approved for North Carolina. Refunds are fast within 10 days directly to your account. TurboTax is the highest rated by tax professionals as I used to work in the tax field.

      • Jlaleonard

Wanted to mention that Turbotax has a Free edition and the Freedom Edition. They are not the same and are completely different. The “Free edition” will charge you when you print and file and the “Freedom Edition” only charges for a few states not approved to be Free. North Carolina is on the Free list and you will not pay a dime at the end of the program.

        • Elizabethconner

Is NC free to efile too???

          • Jlaleonard

yes, The states that are completely Free to file, print and e-file are AL, AR, AZ, GA, IA, ID, IN, KY, MI, MN, MO, MS, NY, NC, ND, OK, OR, RI,SC, VA, VT, WV

just make sure you are on the real site.If your Adjusted gross income is
31,000 or less or you are active duty Military family you will
qualify.  The sites main page will guide you to see if you qualify to
use this. This is IRS approved too but not everyone knows about the
Freedom edition as they do make much money from it. I will post the site
            if Jenny approves it below.

    • Kat Moody

I’ve been using Free Tax USA for over 7 years & still love them!!!

    • Valgal1119

taxact.com is just like this and is awesome.  I’ve been using it for years

    • AmyInAtl

If anyone has USAA, you can get a 25% discount on Turbo Tax. Just go to USAA and it will lead you to their personal Turbo Tax page.  Even if you’ve used them in the past, you can still use your old login and you’ll still get the discount.  I wish I had known about it last year because I saved $17 with the discount this year.  Paid $67 for both fed and state last year, this year with the discount was $50.  Though, I wish I had known there was a site like Free Tax USA with no income requirement.  Too late for this year, but there’s always next year!

    • Mari838587

I have used “Free Tax USA” for a few years now. I used to use Turbo Tax until I found the same exact filing status was free at Free tax USA. I do mine, and about four others in my family with this program. I absolutely LOVE it!  It makes no sense to pay for a simple return when you can efile for free.

      • Rpete1

Hi there!  Can you tell me what standardized deduction they inputted for your taxes this year?  When we did it, they used $12750 and it is supposed to be $11600.  Thanks!

    • Cjanddrewmommy

I have been using freetaxusa for around 4 years and I have never had a problem.  I recommend this site to everyone!!

    • I used this program one year, because it has the cheapest state tax service charges (turbotax online was going to charge $17.99-30.00). I will probably be using this site again, because it is great!

    • Skibum4842

I used this program for the first time and it was free …. so far so good :)

    • Amandacottrell

Thanks so much for this, Jenny!  I was determined to find a better way to get our taxes done than the $200 CPA fee when I did most of the work getting everything together AND I pretty much know what’s going on with all of our info.  I’m gonna give this a shot!

    • JM

Used it last year with NO problems at all and was very pleased, will use it again this year!

    • Hhbeverly

I looked on their site but I can’t tell if they allow imports of w-2’s or brokerage statements.  Anyone . . . ?

    • Bamabobbie

Well I don’t see where to seperate IRA distributions from Pensions lines 15 and 16.  They are both 1099R’s and show combined amount on line 16 which isn’t correct.  Also can’t get the thing to print right.  Maybe one page but the others look like a foreign language.  Can anyone help me???

    • Mshook04

I just compared Tax Act and Free Tax USA. With Free Tax USA, I am getting back $500 more than Tax Act. The info was entered the same. I have been using Tax Act for 4 years and I am thankful to know about Free Tax USA. It not only saved money, but I am going to receive more of a refund!!!

      • Rpete1

FYI – We just did the same thing – were using Tax Act for years, but tried this instead.  We noticed that we were getting back over $200 more with Free Tax USA and were skeptical, so we dug.  Noticed that the standardized deduction is different for both.  We THINK the Free Tax USA is using the wrong number – please investigate!  Wouldn’t want you to get audited!

    • Padawanlearner

Thanks for the tip!  This was much easier to use than my old program, and MUCH cheaper!  I even got a bit more money back. :)

    • Listen.
Basic, taxes certainly are a suffering in the butt. You want plenty of time
to file them AND the cash to pay for them. Once you do not have the cash to
pay, you should seek out a tax specialist like a tax attorney or enrolled
agent. However, you have to be smart about this! This website
http://www.Consumertaxreports.org tends to make your researching simpler and
a lot less uncomfortable. Just go through those reviews about several of the
tax debt businesses on the market, and your selection will likely be
effortless. If you owe the government, and especially should you already been
the casualty of JK Harris or Roni Deutch, ConsumerTaxReports.Org is a must
      read.
