It’s now January 14th, have you thought about taxes yet?

For folks that file a standard return with no itemized deductions, you probably qualify for the FREE version of Turbo Tax.  They even file it for free.

If you need a state return also, that is an additional fee.  A tip though, before kids and deductions we used to use the free version for federal returns and then do a state return on paper using the numbers that turbo tax had given us for the federal return.  Then you are only out the cost of a stamp!

If you don’t qualify for the free version they current have the deluxe and higher versions up to 40% off.

Don’t forget about free budgeting software for everyone from the makers of turbo tax.

Check the fine print..The purchase of one state return ups the deluxe to over $60 — a big difference from what Staples and others routinely charge.

I believe that deluxe includes one state return at no additional cost. If you need to file additional state returns, you do have to purchase that one.

I always get my return ready in January and then wait for the best deal on Turbo Tax.  You can always find them through your bank, insurance company, all kinds of places.

Alot of these deals include the State return, but I’ve never seen one that includes the State E-file. That will run you $19.95. Last year we couldn’t E file our state taxes because we moved and had alot of nonsense, but even with mailing it we got our money direct deposited in 2 weeks.
Costco has the same software pack with Free Federal E-File, and a State return included for only $39.79 after the $10 instant coupon.

My experience has been you can get the Deluxe with e-file and a state return cheaper at BJ’s or Costco, etc. I have never found the best price directly from TurboTax which I think is weird.

I just have to post that I have REALLY enjoyed following Jenny’s posts this last week or so!  (Maybe a little longer)  I have been following for well over a year but it seems that she has really bumped up her deals recently and I am ever so appreciative!  Thank you so much!!

Isn’t TaxAct free federal return and efile, no matter whether you itemize deductions or not?  That’s what I used last year, think I wound up paying $15 for adding the state including efile.

      • MarySC

I’ve used TaxAct for several years. You can complete and e-file your federal tax for free, and it does all the state calculations as well. Instead of paying for e-filing state tax, I do like Jenny suggests and paper file them for the cost of a stamp.

    • If you love TurboTax, go to Staples or OfficeDepot on Saturday, January 14 before the store closes.  TurboTax Deluxe is on sale $49.99 and includes state.  This is good if you live in a state that has state tax.  If you’re in Florida, then this deal is the winner!

      Hey All Fellow Couponers,

Just efiled tonight through freetaxusa federal efile is free and state is 9.95 if you need.

      I love tax time..

The Basic is not free. It is $19.95
The only way it is free is if you choose not to carrying any files from last years report over to this year and you get no support. I did use the $19.95 basic because it saved me tons of time plus efiling was free. If you normally do EZ filing, you can get it free right off the IRS site too. This is still a very good deal for those of us who choose to have an account that we use each year.
