I had fun this week!  I bought a ton of produce and still managed to save over 50%.  It makes me thrilled every time I can do this since it’s is the largest excuse people give me as to why they don’t or can’t coupon.

Imagine me standing on top of a building screaming the following:

You can save money on every item that is sold in a grocery store.
Every single one of them!

Seriously I’ve had moments where I just want to shake people and get them to wake up…

Okay moving on.

This week I went to Kroger and Walgreens.

Kroger:
Total Before Sales and Coupons: $148.87
Total Spent: $63.03
Total Saved: $85.84 or 57.6%

This included: Potatoes, Spinach, Whole Pineapple, (2) Strawberries 16 oz, Squash 3 lbs, (1) Green Pepper, (1) Cantaloupe, (1) Butternut Squash, (7) Green Giant Valley Fresh Steamers, Mahi Mahi 2 lbs, 8 lbs of Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts, and ton more.  I had (3) $3 off coupons from the last mega event that helped a lot.

I had been wanting to make Butternut Squash fries for ages, so this week we tried it and they are awesome!  They taste just like sweet potato fries but with basically no starch.  The only change to make to this recipe is to use oil spray to reduce the fat content significantly and we seasoned some with chili powder for an added kick. (1 WW points plus for a ton of fries!)

Walgreens:
Total Before coupons and Sales: $16.47
Total Spent: $1.84
Total Saved: $14.63 or 88.8%

I went in just for my swiffer pad refills.  This is such an awesome deal I couldn’t pass it up.  I also had RR from a previous week so it made it even better.

How did you do this week?  Leave a comment or a link to your savings post.

Today at Publix, I spent $80.62 and saved $74.90!! And tomorrow…I will go back and get my $50 gas card for $10 off…they ran out…but when they get more, they will still honor the deal…

    • A_shrader

Thanks for the fry idea! I have had the sweet potatoes, not the squash. When my garden comes in this year I'm going to experiment with that!

    • E. Hornor

I love how everyones Kroger purchase have been similar…Charmin toilet paper, bounty towels, two steam fresh veggies…there must have been so good match-ups ; )

    • That's awesome! I love it when stores do BOGO on produce. There's always some type of produce on BOGO at my local grocery store. I'm on WW too, and I was really excited to get the $4/$20, I told as many of the gals as I could at the meeting yesterday.

    • Whitneysparks

I spent a little more at WAGS than I had intended, but while I was waiting in line I saw Snapple lemon tea on clearance for $3. I looked in my coupon book and low and behold I had a $1 off coupon. So I snagged (2) Snapples for $4.00. Normally at Kroger these run $6.99 since they're the nice glass jars. I take one to lunch everyday:)

    • achmomma

I found a great deal at Kroger yesterday. I ran in for a few things and saw 14lb super scoop cat litter marked down to $2.49 and they all had A peel off sticker coupon for $1.00 off NOW. I picked up six of them, I paid $1.49 each a total of $9.68 after tax. I was so proud of myself. :)

    • Between Bi-Lo and Walgreen's I got 253.83 worth of stuff and paid 80.99 total!! Yea,I could shake and slap myself silly for not doing this sooner!!

    • hooks party of 6

Just to throw this out there about the butternut squash comment. Which thank you I will be trying this. Where you do squash fries I have been doing sweet potato fries. My kids love it for the most part but my parents have a small garden and sweet potatoes keep forever it seems so…needless to say I have gotten a lot of sweet potatoes.

    • Nikita

Krogers I bought $30 worth cereal, frozen veggies, 1 bottle of sun drop, and 2 cat treats – paid $6.25. Food Lion – did the generic deal – bought 30 cans of cat food and got paid $3! – bought $70 worth of food including cereal, free propel, birdseye veggies, and farm rich frozen appetizer things and paid $28.58. I got home and looked at the receipt and noticed I lost $7 because the B1G1 sale didnt come off of 2 of the farm rich products.

I went to CVS (again) today and got $42.19 worth of product (6 Dove men care deo, 2 Kellogs cereal bowls and 1 Loreal Bare Naturale gentle lip conditioner) for $2 OOP (saved 95.25%). The great thing about today's trip was that I only used manufacturer Q's, I did NOT use any ECB's….awesome! My trip on Sunday the 6th was pretty good too…..$23.08 in product and spent $2.42 OOP (saved 89.5%) with $9 back in ECB…..what can i say, i'm addicted to shopping at CVS! The good thing about getting extra items (i.e., the deoderant) is that I give the ones my family won't need to a friend whose husband is deployed, serving in Iraq right now. May as well pass the savings on to others to bless them as well.

    • Madhatter31

Went to Publix, Kroger and CVS. Purchased $303.46 worth of groceries and health and beauty aids for only $56.47 with more ECBs than I started with! My husband LOVES it when I save over 81% like that.

    • Athenasbyshanna

I only went to Winn Dixie this week, as I was low on money and was chosen for the Philly Cooking Creme HouseParty, so had to get some groceries! I also got produce, milk, eggs, etc without specific coupns for those items and saved over 62%! My initial total was 243.38 and final out of pocket after sales, clearance finds and coupons was 94.xx!! AND, this was my first trip with my new fuelperks card (just started in my area) and already have $.50 off my next fillup!! I was excited! Only 4 or 5 coupon beeps and the CSM put them right through!

      • Good Luck with your party! I was chosed for the DiGiorno Pizza and Hoops party. It's my first one. I'm so excited!

    • Keyshaw

I have coupons for mostly everything I buy, I shop sales and used coupons on the items but for the most part I only save have about 15-20 dollars with my coupons. I shop mostly in Publix and Krogers.I hate to buy stuff without coupons. I've couponed forever!I've never had the big haul like some of you'll are experiencing. What am I doing wrong?

      • Amy B.

Are you buying only sale items? Or are you buying full priced items and matching a coupon to it?

      • Leighann Howell

You could probably be like me and living in a bad area. There just aren't any good stores around me that have sales and deals. The one store that doubles coupons is a small, independently owned store whose prices with sales and doubled coupons are still mostly twice that of the local Wal Mart. Don't be discouraged, though – if you can't save a lot of money on food, save money at the drugstores getting HBA stuff for cheap or even free. That's where almost all my savings are coming in at this point – you just can't save the money on groceries, so save the money in other areas and it will work out (more or less).

i went to walgreens this week and stocked up on tampax, bounce, pedia care, puffs, dawn and mr clean i before sales and coupons 156.38, spent 60.42, saved 95.96. i read your tips and started getting stuff from your site just since the first of the year. i was thrilled w/this weeks savings. I am going to visit my daughter this next week. she is married and i am taking her a care pkg of deoderant, body wash and cleaning supplies that i had extras. and one morning this week i was headed out the door to take my 14 year old to school and she asked if i had a coupon for a driink. i was thrilled!! i booked my hotel online through ebates and i have resturant coupons saved up to use next week on my trip. Thanks for all your helpful hints! i wished i could come to one of your classes but hasn't worked out yet. Think about coming close to Columbus, MS. thx

    • Lora

I went to several stores this week, Kroger, Meijer, Walmart, Kmart and Marsh. My total was 267.08 spent, 115.02 had a 58% savings. I was exhausted when it was all done. Just a little about what I got. Kmart had 10/10 kelloggs cereal and pop tarts. They also had double coupons to $2.00. I got all of my cereal for FREE, pop tarts for FREE, and bar S franks for FREE. Used $1.00/2 coupons.

    • Purplewhit

I love the squash fries too!!!

    • Leighann Howell

It's really easy to save money when you have grocery stores in your area that double or triple coupons, that offer specials and deals, that do good clearance and discounts. Please keep in mind before you get all rude that some of us really and truly do not live in areas with good stores. Some of us are truly lucky to be able to save ANYTHING at the store. I do everything I can to save my family money and the fact of the matter is, my grocery budget is still between $150-$200 weekly. I'm one of those people who do their best to save on HBA and paper products because they know they're not going to be able to get good deals on food. A good deal on produce for me is something that's not going to spoil by the end of the week because there are NO STORES IN MY AREA WITH GOOD SALES. I comb the ads and the stores weekly with coupons and do matchups and follow blogs and I'm just not saving money, not because I don't know how to do it, not because I'm lazy, but because SOME of us live in areas where we don't have the resources to get the big savings. It's always inspirational to me to see someone who got $300 worth of groceries for $100, but I've been doing this for two years now and have never, ever gotten anything like that – and from talking to the others in my area, neither have any of them.

      • Leighann, What area are you in? Would love to research and see what you have.

        • MFamMom

And this…a comment from Jenny herself…is one of the reasons we all love this blog so much!!! I've heard similar comments from friends all over the country…especially in Nebraska & Iowa…and I want too want to prove that they can find deals…with a little patience!!! — Or do like we did — if & when ever possible for your family — move somewhere with a lower cost of living and GREAT stores to shop for food for our family. We moved from Chicago to Atlanta last year and grocery shopping here alone saves our family of 7 $300-400 each month!!! Thanks again, Jenny!!!

          • MFamMom

Forgive my grammar — I was typing too fast!!!

    • Catiei

Just got back from a quick run to CVS looking for late night deals…WOOHOO! They had Lysol Neutra Air Starter Kits (reg. 14.79) on sale for $5.99. I happened to have 2 of the $4.00 off starter kit coupons available in the coupon database. Use $4.00 in ECB and got them both for tax only!!!! Thanks Jenny!!!!

      • Damarisarroyo691

How did you do it? wouldn't it have been $2 plut tax? Did they let you use 2 coupons for one item? Please explain.

        • Catiei

I used $4.00 in Extra Care Bucks from last week to cover the $1.99 left on each item. ECB's are so much fun! Have a nice weekend!

    • Bee

I know full well money can be saved on anything. If I don't eat veggies now, it's because I choose not to. I just have to say again, though, it just does not pay to go to Wal-Mart. I haven't been a regular customer in more than 2 years and went there tonight and was told my coupons looked fake (although they would scan). I told them to keep it all and walked out. It felt good. No, I don't think it's the cashiers fault, but if enough people walk out then maybe that chain will wise up. Now I remember why I only get a couple items there about twice a month.

      • MFamMom

It's helpful to have an actual copy of their updated coupon policy in hand in situations like these…the majority of the store employees don't even know it has been updated recently!!!

    • Jessdine

I just spent .03 cents at Wal-mart!!! In return I got….4packs gains dryer sheets, 7 trial Purex, excedrin migraine meds, breakfast sausage, big tub of port wine cheese, cup of peaches, 4 bottles of body wash, a kids electric toothbrush, kid Elmo toothbrush and a bag of M&Ms!

At first the cashier was hesitant to use all my coupons but his manger told him to. I explained to him that they just updated their coupon policy and it's all over the web. He was really cool about it once he knew it was okay. I think it all depends on the cashier.

This is my first major coupon experience. I so get it!!!!!!

    • One8sara

So, where do I get coupons for produce? I've rarely seen one, except on cereal boxes for strawberries or bananas…

      • MFamMom

There have been some $ off produce w/ purchase @ Publix the last few weeks….

    • bh

went to walgreens for pediasure, had 3 2.00 coupons. Got 3 infant for 5.99. Girl would only use 1 2.00 coupon with the 3 5.00 walgreen coupon and said I owe .97. I said I would find a pack of gum for a buck. Threw in pack of bubble gum 1.39 or so and she then scanned 2 2.00 manu coupons and said now I owe .36 and another 1.50 manu coupon for pediasure printed out. Does that make sense? Now I get a pack of gum and the pediasure for less $. Then went to target for excedrin. Used 3 3.00 manu and 3 target coupons. Nice man that rang me up last week and gave me the last bag of valentines kisses for .29 (90 % off) discounted the target coupon so I would not get the overage. But they were free excedrin and an excedrin coupon printed out. Then went by a 2nd Walgreens and used the other 2.00 coupon and the 1.50 coupn that just printed with no problem. Paid .46 for 2 pediasure I think and yet another pediasure coupon printed.

    • Agelesswarrir43

      I think I did well

      196.32 before sales and coupons
      spent 34.47

broke my orders up and got 4 50.00 gift cards for 160 saving 40 there too

      Publix

    • MFamMom

My favorite store this week was browsing the super clearance priced stuff all throughout Target. I got some great work out tools for 75% off — things I would NEVER pay full or even 1/2 price for but have wanted to have of my own for a long time — exercise bands for 3.74, a large exercise ball for $7.46 & a great thick mat that was regularly $39.99 for $9.98. Also stocked up on clearance socks and undies for all 5 kids–all at 75% off reg price!!!

      • MFamMom

There's still tons left at the Target in Pavillion — Fayetteville, GA if anyone else wants some great new workout tools.

    • wendy

I only buy organic produce and uncured, no nitrate meats, and coupons are very hard to find. Any tips? My stores don't put theses things on sale either; I have been looking for sales for over a year.

      • start a garden!

      • Blessedmom2boys

Wendy, I just posted this above. Due to health reasons for my son and myself (auto-immune issues for both I shop organically on most fresh food items (a lot research to determine the best choices). But Southern Savers has helped me save on the things I don't do organic on (mostly processed/frozen/canned foods, as well as dog/cat food, paper goods, etc.) which has enabled me to do this for my family and I am so grateful for all of your hard work! I always shop produce @ Whole Foods that is on sale. Target/Costco offers 5%/2% rebates, so I try to stock up on my organic meats.

    • Kahreh

Now i know why there wasn't any candy left at Rite Aid. People stop being greedy! If you don't need 75 candy bars how about let some of the other couponers have a chance to get a good deal too.

      • Bee

LOL If I brought 75 candy bars in the house, they WOULD eventually all be eaten. There are some products made to buy VERY sparingly, even if they are free.

But, no doubt, it will be another story of donation, or giving out gifts or something else that supposedly negates the issue of leaving nothing for others who actually took the time and gas to come to the store, only to find nothing.

I can't even buy that many as gifts, because I know too many folks who are diabetic or cut that stuff out of their diet altogether.

But, let's just assume the person in the post ordered ahead.;)

I got the Swiffer pad refills, too, and a Mr. Clean magic eraser to go with it. I've been waiting for a good sale for these and the B1G1 coupons made it even better!

    • Jennix6

I am not going to save as much as some people, especially because I only buy organic produce and natural or organic meat. However, I still save between 40-50% every week since I have been couponing. I am inspiring my friends and it feels good! This week I saved 43% and got organic tomatoes, organic bananas, 1.5 lbs of natural beef, 4 lbs of natural lean ground turkey, and tons more! It's a shame it costs more to eat healthy, but I still pride myself on being able to save at least 40% a week.

      • Carrieskitchen

Where do you find coupons for organic (or any) produce? I am gluten-free and we eat mostly fresh foods, but I cannot seem to find the coupons that everyone talks about. I just get discouraged with the coupon game because the food coupons I find are not anything I typically purchase… Thanks!

    • Debnsc1971

Can someone tell me of a website that sells coupons…besides Ebay. I have used one in the past but can't remember the name of it. Thanks!!!

      • Jamie

There are several, actually. If there aren't any links on this site, I think couponclippers is a big one. Good luck!

    • Ap17182

This week I hit Kroger and Walgreens. At Kroger, I saved 68%, and that included tp, paper towels, tampax, deodorant and body wash as well as groceries. At Walgreens, I saved 80%, a first for me there.

    • momof3

Thanks for including the recipe for squash fries! I LOVE squash, but the rest of the family doesn't, so it ends up going to waste! I'll bet with dipping sauce, it's great!

This is the link to my Final results on 3/19/2011.

Three stores (Walgreens, Rite Aid and Kroger) . . . total savings 89.75% on total value $730.13. It is my first big haul, and I'm feeling pretty good about it. No one ever talks about the 'aftermath' of finding a place for all that stuff, though!
