For some reason this is the third day this week that has felt like a Friday.   I think it’s just been a long week!  I was gone most of the week and actually home for a whopping 12 hours all week… so needless to say there wasn’t much shopping done during that time.  I did run out for milk, bread and some produce at Kroger and also ran out for some essential dog items because we adopted a puppy this week!

At Kroger there was no  big savings… it was truly a run in and buy the basics.  I think the bread was on sale $1 off and the milk was 20¢ off the regular price, but that’s nothing to write home about.

Kroger:
Total Spent: $11.82

Dollar General:
Total before sales and coupons: $27.50
Total Spent: $17.11
Total Saved: $10.39

This was for a dog leash, collar, pet food and a couple of toys.  We were on the road and had to get something to be able to walk the poor little guy and this was the first store we found.  The dog food and treats were on sale and I had a coupon so that was most of the savings.

I also stocked up online on dog food with a deal on Amazon:

Iams Pro Active Puppy Food, 3.5 lb bag, 5 bag case, $17.88
-$1 off Iams Amazon Coupon
(makes it $3.37 a bag)

These same bags are $6 each at Walmart, so I’m happy with my find.

Total for the week: $40.09

Love your puppy!! Thanks for all the hard work, enjoy the weekend!

This has nothing to do with coupons but I am so glad you adopted a puppy rather than buying one.  I work with a local rescue group in TN and I am always telling people what a good “deal” our dogs are because you get all the vet work and the dog for one low price:)

    • lil A’s mom

congrats on your puppy.  i hope your girls love it.

    • TnS

Such a cute puppy – congratulations on adopting.

    • tina

congrats on the puppy it’s very cute adopting is so much better then buying just a word of the wise please be sure that the dog you get from the pound and shelter has had its parvo shot. I adopted a puppy about 3 months ago his name was bentley we took him to the vet right after we adopted him to get his shots since he had not had shots at the pound . The little guy was fine for 2 days and then got sick took him to the vet he had parvo they treated him there he died  at the vet two days later my 2 year old was heart broken. We called the pound and they said sorry they had 6 dogs die of parvo the day before we got him they did not tell us any of that. I still plan on adopting another puppy but not from that shelter. I just thought I would share so this doesn’t happen to any1 else.

Sorry that happened to you, but unfortunately that can happen at any shelter. Even if they’ve had some of their shots, they can still get parvo. There is even still a slight chance that they can still get parvo once fully vaccinated. Usually once they’re over 6 months of age is when they can be considered in the clear (and even then). Puppies, like babies, don’t have the immune system of an adult. Its just always a good idea with any puppy, no matter where it came from, to keep a close eye on their behavior. Any signs of being lethargic, not eating, or having runny bowl movements can all be signs of parvo. The sooner you get them to a vet the better their chances are of surviving. Of course, I’m not saying you did anything wrong, even at shelters I’ve worked at getting the puppy to a vet a minute after it shows symptoms still only resulted in 50/50 chance of survival.

Still, the shelter should have told you about what happened. At the shelters I’ve worked at, all puppies under 6 months were put on parvo watch for 10 days after any outbreak. Which meant that for those 10 days, no puppy could be adopted. That is horrible that the shelter would still adopt out puppies knowing that there is a good chance they are infected. I would never go back to that shelter either if I were you. Its one thing if puppies go home before symptoms are shown, but to send them home afterwards? Thats just cruel to the puppy and to the new owners.

        • tina

he had no symptoms at all the day I took him to the vet is the first day he was showing symptoms and the vet told me that like you said had a 50% chance to live I could not get a 8 week old puppy put down knowing there was a chance he could live. I called the town and had told them what happened and the guy said what would you like me to do im busy. I just wanted the shelter to change there policy to the one you have stated above. He then told me some live some die so what. I will never go to that shelter ever again i still feel sorry for the dog that are there. In the end it cost us over 300 dollars and a heart broke 2 year old but you live and learn. I know now what to ask when i go to a shelter from now on. I’m just saying if you adopt please ask questions before you adopt.

As others have said, thanks so much for adopting your puppy rather than buying.  Every year in this country, 3.6 million animals are needlessly euthanized because people choose to “shop, rather than adopt”.  Yes, btw, you did read that shocking figure correctly.

      jenny love the puppy

    • Congrats on the new puppy! ^_^ But uh, the Walmart price on dog food seems like a tremendous rip off. When we bought IAMS at PetSmart it was close to $1/1lb. Now that we moved to a rural area we get our pet food at Tractor Supply! We’ve “upgraded” to 4Health, which has better quality ingredients. Even so, we’re still paying less than $1/1lb.  I know that prices fluctuate depending on region, but that still seems like a hefty difference.

Big Bark from my 2 adopted boys. I wish you the good luck with your new addition as I have had with mine. I adopted a shelter dog and had her for 17.5 yrs. She was a wonderful dog, I still miss her. Now I have 2 huskies from a rescue group and they are both wonderful dogs. Best 3 deals I’ve ever made.

    • I took advantage of the CVS deal on Cokes. I’m just getting back into the couponing thing. When I did it before, I got suckered in and ended up spending more money than I would without them. Now I’m careful to make sure I’m only getting items I need or .. when it’s a REALLY good deal… health care items I can donate to the local shelter.

Also, when I was in line at Wal-mart yesterday, I spotted All You magazine and grabbed a copy. SO MANY COUPONS!!

Thanks for all the great advice.

    • Karmabottle

Hm. I bought 8 boxes of Tyson Anytizers chicken for the fam using the $1 off coupon from the 3/4 paper. Great fast dinners for 2/3 of the household after spin class during the week!

    • Alyssadapinder

I can’t find the coupon on amazon, is there anywhere else i would look to find it?

    • It was a good week for me at kroger; saved $80 with card and coupons… got 2b 3-3= free dial soap 1-.35×2=.30 edwards single serve 1.79-1 =.79 purex 2.34-.50×2= 1.34 breyers ice cream 2.99-1ecpn=1.99

Congratulations on your new doggy addition to the family. Thank you for choosing to adopt a homeless animal!

    • Jessica P

Forgot to ask what kind your dog is and what’s its name!

    • Gspelvin

Congrats on the puppy and like everyone is saying, that you adopted a shelter puppy!  I wanted to give you a small piece of advice that you will appreciate as time goes on – pick a dog food you and your puppy and your vet are happy with, and stick with it.  Changing depending on what’s a good coupon deal can upset his tummy.  Upset puppy tummy = unspeakably awful messes to clean up.
He is so cute!!  Lucky dog to find such a nice new family.
