For the first time in almost two months we’ve been out of town most of the week.  I did make it to Kroger before we left to grab a few Mega event items and get all the fixins to make a friend a gluten free dinner and dessert.  For folks that have to make every meal gluten free I hope that you are able to find some deals every now and then, that stuff was expensive!!

Kroger
Total before coupons and sales: $96.14
Total Spent: $46.22
Total Saved: $49.92 or 51.9 %

This would have been insanely better without the gluten free products but it was awesome to make someone home made peach cobbler that doesn’t always get desserts.  The extra costs wasn’t a consideration at all as we watched him eat 3 helpings!

We also had fun this week saving money in other ways.  Finding free activities while on the road, working to save on meals etc.  Our favorite was a fun little “zoo” in Athens GA called Bear Hollow.  Completely free and at a beautiful park so two free activities in one!

How did you do this week?  Leave a comment or a link to your savings post!

    • macboy

Yep. I am on a low-carb diet (by choice) and it is expensive.

    • Nicki

I had to giggle this week…
I'm a nanny and was taking the little boy to the water park but couldn't find his hat. Okay, I'll just swing by CVS and pick one up. NBD! Scanned my card and got a random $5 ECB. Hat is on sale for $7 something. Already down to $2. Well!!!! After she rang me up it beeped that beautiful beep and I got another random $5 ECB. I made a profit on a whim. We celebrated with ice cream at the water park.

      • Hollimac19

        Omg, Nicki, I LOOOVE this!!

    • Shanon

We love the Bear Hollow Zoo! I hope someone told you about Hodgson's pharmacy just up the road. They have $1 ice cream cones and they load up on the scoops too!

      • angelyn_1986

I think Hodgson's closed recently. When I was in Athens a couple weeks ago the sign was gone and the building looked empty. In college I lived right next to Bear Hollow and I would walk to Hodgson's with my roommates for a treat. : (

When reading a blog, the people seem so far away… I had no idea you were in Athens!! I didn't realize we were probably going to the same Kroger! LOL!

      • Kristen_DH

Really? I thought everyone lived in my computer screen! lol. I think Jenny is in SC thought… she travels a bit though. I'm in the Loganville-Monroe area! :)

    • Smilemaker29662

Jenny, you are an awesome friend to fix a gluten free meal! I am on a gluten free diet and would give anything for a homemade peach cobbler. Can you give me the receipe?

CVS trip – my only good trip this week
Metimucial (coarse mill, unflavored) reg price 13.99 – rain check for 4.99 – CVS coupon for 2 off metimucial purchase – MQ 3, then used a CVS Q for 3 dollars in ECB for my birthday! bought 2 containers and a bag of reece's pieces for .44!!

That is 98% savings, really 100% since all that was tax and I left with 2 ECB!

Several different Food Lions have Betty Crocker gluten free cake and cookie mix on close out for 1.89. they are pretty good. We shared with some of my kids non gluten free friends and they said they couldn't tell the difference.

Would have had a better ration but couldn't resist the Blueberries for $4.88 at Kroger. Used 8 coupons from Kroger Home Mailer that were store coupons about to expire.

    • Hosselton621

How do I get the Kroger home mailer?

    • Hester Elrod

Here is the run down from our grocery adventure today (5 stores)

      78 (POUNDS OF MEAT)
      Number of items 215
      Total cost $422.87
      …Cost per item average: $1.96

    • Fran Hutcheson

Hi, I would really like the gluten free peach cobbler recipe too! My husband eats gluten free and it is very expensive. Our grocery bill each week would be nothing if I didn't have to buy gluten free.

      • shoegal78

Fran, We eat pretty much gluten free in our house as well. One of the best websites for gluten free recipes is http://www.elanaspantry.com. Also, if you buy things like Almond Flour and Coconut Flour in bulk on Amazon it can really be a saver. Almond Flour is about $10 per pound in the store, but you can 5lbs. on Amazon or Honeyville’s website for about $30. Hope this helps!

My father in law is allergic to wheat and many other foods and they simply don't have room in their budget for fancy gluten free cake mixes and other products. There is a way to live with food allergies within a tight budget but you do miss out on many things. It was exciting to be able to serve him cake at our wedding, it was probably the first piece of cake he had eaten in 20 plus years.

    • Dgram41

My only trip this week was to Bi-Lo. I spent $62.89 oop and saved $113.14 — $44.91 worth of coupons & $62.83 store savings!
