This has been a long week.  I thought last week with an unexpected surgery was crazy… this is another example of don’t put things off thinking that next week will be better.  They are all crazy in their own way.

We live in Columbia, SC which happens to look a little different than it did a week ago.  I think no one our area knew what to expect with the rain storm.  Friends that live in low lying areas braced for the worst, but most folks thought they would be just fine.  I also think, like us, most folks were laughing at the meteorologist by Saturday afternoon.  We got maybe 3 inches of rain Friday night and then Saturday it just drizzled.  We had a birthday party for my now 3 year old and went to bed.  Around 11 pm Saturday night the sky opened and didn’t stop pouring till noon Sunday.  Sunday morning we woke to texts and phone calls about church.  I’ve never seen an entire city cancel church.

Now that the sun is shinning we are seeing just what has changed.  For my family we had a small leak in our roof, but nothing to complain about compared to friends that lost everything.  The destruction to roads is another story.  We live about 10 miles north of town, it would have taken us 25 minutes to get to church last week.  Now it takes about an hour.  All of the roads between us and town are washed out or bridges aren’t stable.  There are so many roads like this, that it’s hard to know when they will get to our area.  We will wait patiently and drive a bit farther for a while.

As for shopping this week, that was also a bit tricky.  Most stores were very low on fresh produce, bread, and milk.  We got what we could, but didn’t bother with coupons (it’s okay to have weeks that they just don’t work for you).  We didn’t even get weekly ads in some stores when the ad had started!  I would love to go back and grab some deals, but I doubt that I’ll head back to town this week.  Adding an extra half an hour to a trip really makes you rethink whether it’s important!

We did get one thing this week that was a money saver!  We had a Zaycon pick up this week for a case of Salmon.  Getting 25 lbs of frozen salmon for $6.99 lb is about $3 less a lb than “on sale” in the grocery store lately.  It’s a big up front purchase, but means that we have fish for a few months in the freezer.
