Yesterday I left my comfort zone and flew to Haiti with Samaritan’s Purse and Operation Christmas Child.  It’s been a very long and emotional 24 hours since we got here but very awesome!   I’m working on a video of everything we have a seen and done but want to share a few pictures with you really quickly (and a short video at the bottom as a present to my husband).

First the country is beautiful.  We are staying in an extremely old “club med”, so old that my shower head broke off this morning and basically bathed using a hose (with cold water).  I can look out the window in my room and see the ocean and then walk out the door behind me and see the mountains.  The picture below is the view from my door.

There are about 50 of us here distributing Operation Christmas Child Boxes.  We have split into 4 teams and each team has 5 different schools or churches that we will visit.  Today alone the four teams gave out over 2000 boxes combined!  Total Haiti will receive 250,000 Christmas Child Boxes.

The children are adorable.  I want to bring them all home with me!

This little guy got a tiny little box that children’s shoes would have come in.  I felt so sad for him, but God has all these things worked out.  When he opened his box it was completely packed with mega blocks and his little face lit up as he said “block” over and over again in Creole.

Now for a quick present for my Husband, today was his birthday and it was very sweet of him to send me off with love and encouragement.

I’m am also thankful to the folks that have stepped up to run things here while I’m gone.  The internet is in and out and just making this 50 second video took a couple hours to get online.  I hope that things are going smoothly, but if not thanks for your patience this week while I get to experience so many amazing things!

I can’t wait to share even more stories and pictures with you!

I am fairly new to your website and have saved so much money already. But my heart skipped a beat when I saw you are in Haiiti. I have been to the Gonaives area 4 times and each time I fall more deeply in love with the people. May God bless you for your work. I was also blessed to be at the Charlotte, NC distribution center for Operation Christmas Child this past Nov. What an operation it is. May God bless you all. Great video. Brought back many happy memories.

I have had the amazing blessing of traveling there 4 different times and each time I fell more and more in love with the children. Good luck not trying to put one in your bag when you come home. They have a way of grabbing your heart and not letting go! Keep us all posted on your adventure! Thanks for your work and sacrifice to make so many lives better (here and overseas):-)

I know many people who have made many trips to Haiti and have adopted from there and each and every story is a blessing to me. I will be praying for you and your team while you guys are gone. • Michael

It is really not my intent to rain on anyone's parade, but all the descriptions of Haiti as “wonderful” are a little shocking to me. Are we talking about the same Haiti? Haiti has been one of the world's greatest messes forever and there is precious little to show for the billions of dollars the US and other developed nations have poured into it. There were 10,000 organizations in Haiti providing food and medical care BEFORE the earthquake. Imagine that,10,000 organizations handing out aid in a tiny place the size of Maryland. There have been widespread reports of locals who would not help rebuild their own homes unless they were paid to do so. Consequently, 95% of the rubble that fell in the capital is still lying there, a year later. Aid is wonderful and God bless anyone who wants to help out. Still, it should be recognized that Haiti is a mess for reasons particular to it and its people. No amount of outside help has fixed Haiti, nor will fix it until those fundamental problems are resolved.

      • Mari

so you blame children for the actions of their parents and the government? Wow, I sure hope your kids don't have to 'pay' for your mistakes.

        • Michael

Mari…I’m not sure what you’re talking about since “blaming children for the actions of their parents” really has nothing to do with what I wrote. Children usually suffer for the shortcomings of their parents and you need not travel to Haiti to see that in action. Is this news to anyone? I’m not saying that there is no need in Haiti. Obviously there is. I’m saying that aid dollars are inherently limited and should be spent where they do the most good. Haiti has a long history of burning through aid with nothing to show for it. Whether you like that fact or not does not change the situation on the ground.

      • The Starr

I traveled to Labadee Haiti, one stop on a Disney Cruise. It was there very on private Island. It was beautiful. No where near the capital. More needs to be done I agree. This is a great opportunity, hope to hear more about your trip.

      • emily

I think what everyone is saying is that the country is wonderful, as in beautiful, and the individual people are wonderful. Of course the country, as in government is a mess and no one is commenting on that here.

      • 3monkeysmom

I'm not sure how anyone can look at that sweet little face in the photo and not be moved.
Regardless of their problems as a nation, this little boy deserves to know someone loves him…deserves to know that Jesus loves him.

      • Guest

I agree with you. Just think Shouldn't we do more in the east part of TN? Anyone ever been there? or what about WV? Two of the country poorest people. People there could use this. lets do more for our people. No matter how much is Given or done Haiti they will never chnage. Many people having been trying to help this country since the 60. God Bless America.

    • momof3

Enjoy your trip…As always, I hope that the expense to you, financially, as well as the time investment to take this trip has a return for both those you are working with, as well as yourself!

    • Kb

I am so glad you chose this “outlet” to represent yourself, your company and your Savior as one reason to learn to use coupons effectively rather than on a tv show learning how to hoard what you get.

    • Misty103074

      So Happy for you!!!

    • Sandra

I prepared 5 boxes for Operation Christmas Child and got confirmation where 4 of the 5 boxes were shipped. Would it not be cool that you could possibly have the remaining box to deliver to Haiti. I will let you know if I receive confirmation on the whereabouts of the remaining box. May God bless you and grant you safety in your journey and work for him.

      • Kb

how did you get to know where the boxes went? last year was my first year doing this and I didnt know but I woudl like to for this coming year.

        • LCP

If you give your donation to Samaritan's Purse online to help with the shipping cost of the box, they will send you a confirmation email once your box has been shipped. (You print out a barcode & stick it on your box & it gets scanned once it has been shipped. Then they email you.) Mine were sent to Haiti this year.

          • Cayman Richardson

My husband and I did 5 boxes as well, and ours went to Georgia.

    • V7nik

Your a wonderful person Jenny! God Bless! :)

    • Turtle2u4

Thank you for everything you do with this website, Jenny. I know the children will enjoy the boxes. And yes I do agree with you, Haiti is a beautiful country. I was there in the 1990's.

    • Jennifer

Peace, strength, love be with you – what an amazing thing that you are a part of!

      • Jennifer

On a side note, I visited Haiti, and probably stayed at the Club Med where you are staying in the early 80's – while I was struck by the beauty of the island, even then – the thing that struck me the most was the poverty level that I witnessed on the road from the airport to the hotel – that was a LONG time ago – I cannot even imagine how much worse it is now!

    • Ang3327

I hope you have a wonderful visit. I am sure it it will be life changing. These children need to know that the world wants them to do well and be successful. What a great way to show them hope and encouragement.

    • Sheila_earp

Thank you for all that you do to help others!!

However, it makes the operation so real to hear from someone who is involved in the distribution to the children and see pictures. Hope to hear more from your journey and see more pictures!

    • luiza

I wonder how many among these singing children have lost loved ones in that dreadful earthquake…and often here I am thinking MY problems are too big.
God, teach me the gift of contentment today!

      • Joynunez24

Sadly many kids did lose parents in the quake. But many are handed over to the orphanages because their parents just can't afford to take care of them.

    • Jody

The video brought tears to my eyes. I want to thank you and everyone else involved for doing this. We take what we have here for granted and it is really a humbling experience when you see something of this nature. My heart goes out to everyone in Haiti. I admire you so much Jenny for what I would love to do, but what you did do.

    • Itchin2bstitchin

Jenny, how awesome you got to go to deliver the boxes. I had no idea it took so long for the children to get them. I'm praying for you and your family. You are a blessing to so many people, some you may never meet, such as myself, thank you for all you do to help others. I know God is filling your crown with jewels for all you do.

    • Joynunez24

Blessings to you Jenny! I have been to Haiti and have experienced the joy those children and even Haitian adults have. It too brought tears to my eyes to hear the children singing. They LOVE to sing! It reminded me how much I miss it there. Conitune to be blessed and safe.

    • Pauladeshazo

How wonderful for you and the children! God Bless.

      Hello-
I am new to reading this blog and I have liked it so far. I felt a little bit defensive when I read your comment on here about the little boy getting a kid size shoe box for christmas. I send 2 boxes every year 1 for a boy and 1 for a girl. I use my sons (who is 7 ) shoe boxes from the new school shoes he gets. (1 for school and 1 for just gym) Letting him know that these boxed are for those kids in operation christmas gets him excited to fill them when the time comes. I fill these to the brink of breaking, and I think any child would be happy to get them . The size shouldn't matter. I put toys, toiletries and school supplies in them. My son even picks out the toys. I mean maybe the people who filled that box did the best them could. You never know what they are going through on their end.

I think of it this way This is the only thing that the kids will get.a toothpast and
toothbrush soap ect. with toys a kids shoe box is to small. the bigger the better,

I don't think that she was saying that anyone should be ashamed of the size box that they can send, only the fact that such a small amount ( maybe smaller than some of the others) can brighten a childs life.

I think you misunderstood her comment about the size of the box. I'm sure everyone wishes they could send a refrigerator size box over to each child, but she was simply saying that even the smallest of boxes hold overflowing joy to a child in need. Kind of reminds me of Matthew 17:20 and having faith the size of a mustard seed. Such a tiny amount, yet it could move mountains.
I'm sure many folks in Haiti are struggling to hold on to that tiny amount of faith right now, so every tiny shoe box that arrives SEEMS like a refrigerator box to them. :-)

Awesome!! Thank you so much for sharing this. I'm so glad you got to go. My husband went this past July. And we participated in the operation christmas child boxes so it's neat for our kids to see that you are distributing similar boxes! Be blessed! May God watch over you and make you a blessing to all those you come in contact with. May he watch over your family while you are gone and bring you back safely!

Praying for your trip, and that you bring help and hope to all those children. It brought tears to my eyes when I read about the little boy's blocks. We in America take for granted so much. Thank you for doing this Jenny!!

May God bless you for abundantly! I love making shoeboxes for OCC and have done this for years. I'm a grandmother and I think that OCC is one of the best tools for reaching the world for Christ that I've ever seen. It shows so many children that someone loves them and the Lord works out what each child receives. Some of my shoeboxes went to Ghana this year and the others went to SW Asia. Can't wait to hear more and see more pictures of your trip.

Jenny, you are my inspiration. You've are an excellent example of what it means to be a Christian (Christ like).

Thank you so much for sharing your pictures – I can hardly wait to see some more! I can't even imagine what it must be like to hand a child a shoebox. I know what it means to me to put one together, but to actually see the child's face when he receives it…..!!!!!
