School is starting back up, and a lot of parents may be thinking about how to help their kids with their skincare routine.  Neutrogena wants to help you and your kids learn how to take care of your skin.  They’ve posted some great videos that tell you about the myths of breakouts, like that acne is only a problem for teenagers, junk food directly results in breakouts, and so many more.  I was surprised by some of the answers they gave!

Neutrogena Banner 2If you thought acne was just for teenagers, it’s just another myth.  Most of us have horrible acne stories from middle school and high school, but some folks even have problems with it into their senior years.  Don’t worry, there’s still a way to fix it.  Neutrogena can help you clear and control your acne with cleansers, scrubs, and treatments.

That acne isn’t curable.. thats kind of disappointing but good to know there are ways (and products) to help control acne!

    • Jen

Have seen in my lovely daughter that a “tan” helps her acne. Such a hard thing to battle for teenaged girls in this day! She will be encouraged to hear the “commonality” of something that has seemed so personal!

    • Kat

The myth about stress and breakouts

    • kmartinez528

    • Chip4251

      stress and breakouts?

    • TraciM

That I will have breakouts forever :)  Still get them….tried most everything….would love to try new grapefruit package.  Thanks

    • Janjanw3

Chocolate.  I gave it up for years as a teen.

    • Metalaika

The myth I found to be most surprising was the connection between stress and breakouts – speaking for myself, though, in retrospect, I find that I tend to touch, rub, or pick at my face more when I am stressed out – so maybe the stress in and of itself does not lead to breakouts, but perhaps some of the behaviors stress tends to elicit cause acne or exasperate it. Food for thought.

    • Amanda G Stelzer

The myth about Acne only happening during  your teenage years  – I NEVER thought I’d be 30 and still dealing with pimples !

    • redteapot

I would love to win this for one of my teenage twins. We are always battling this and where he shaves seems to be worse. He is very clean, but a lot of oil.

    • redteapot

    • jensave

Stress doesn’t cause acne. Could’ve fooled me!!

    • Laura

I suffered from acne as a teen and now suffer adult acne.  I knew most of the myths, but I really did think there was something out there that could cure it for good.  I guess I should have figured that one out when I took Accutane a couple of times and it still came back!

    • Catherinesmths6

can was your face too much!

    • Kelly

I always thought that tanning caused acne to go away because when you dried out the skin, it made your skin less oily. But it makes sense that acne is an inflammation of the skin so it will always be there…especially when you are irritating the skin even more by overexposing the skin to the sun. You learn something new everyday!

    • Jodispink

I was really surprised that stress and the food you eat has nothing to do with acne.

    • Jbpersson

No cure? Accurtane got rid of mine as a teen and I’ve only had spots here and there since. My brother still has acne all over his face and never took it.

    • Rachel

I didn’t know that blackheads were dead skin cells.  Crazy, since they’re all over my nose!

    • heather

I don’t wear makeup because I thought it was giving me acne! WOW!!

I wish I would have read this a while ago, I have been popping pimples for years thinking it was the best thing to do. I was sooo wrong.

      The myth about stress

    • Sylvia

I always thought eating junk foods like chips caused your skin to break out more.  However, we have taken this off our son’s diet and his acne still develops, both on his face and back.  Puberty definitely plays a part!

    • Sherri

The junk food causes stress myth.

    • Toolbelt78

Hormones, not junk food causes acne.

    • Tammywo

I’m always giving my son a hard time about eating sugar and how it makes his acne worse.  I guess I was wrong.

    • Sweshand

The ones about stress and eating junk food?! I guess I can understand because when I see my face breaking out THEN I get more stressed and THEN I eat more junk food!

    • Ginger

I have always heard that tanning cures acne.  The dryness that results can actually cause the imflammation of the skin to be worse.  Treatment with these Neutrogena products can help.

    • annieg

Wow!  Thought stress affected skin more!

    • Lyddiejay

I really hoped I would be done with acne in adulthood. Not true!  I hate that that myth isn’t true.

    • Amy

Hormones cause acne not by just being a teenager or junk food. I thought eating bad caused it all day long!

    • ybird301

Stress = increase in hormones = increase in oil production = increases likehood of clogged pores    Vs.   oily junk food

I wish acne was a teen “thing”

Even though our family goes to a dermatologist, I was surprised to find out about the face washing myth. It stands to reason in my mind that you would still want to eliminate the surface oil whenever possible. It is good to hear from Neutrogena that twice a day washing is definitely enough!

    • Allishay

The junk food myth really surprised me! I do think that eatting healthy foods helps our skin and body but I was surprised that eatting unhealthy things doesn’t hurt our skin.

    • Wow.  I have my daughter wash her face in the morning, night and after ever sweaty workout. I was surprised that more then 2 times a day could make her acne worse. And NOT junk food.  I really learned something today. Thanks.

    • Myth #8, that covering up acne with makeup does not make it worse.  I always thought make up made acne worse.  Good to know that Neutrogena makeup can actually help clear it up.  I learned a lot on these videos.

      Junk food myth…

    • Jensebastian1972

      There were actually 3:
      1) Washing your face more than x2 a day wasn’t good for your skin. I knew it could dry your skin out…but I thought using a moisturizer after was good – there I go clogging pores!
      2) Wearing makeup won’t aggravate breakouts – who knew!! I always told my daughter to stay away from all make up if she was having issues – poor girl!
      3) Junk food doesn’t lead to break outs…hmmm…not really sure I am 100% on board with this one. Especially since when I eat one chocolate bar I usually wake up with a pimple or two within the next few days…but ok, maybe my hormones that make me eat chocolate cause the break outs!!
      Good vids and information.

#7 – that tanning the skin actually doesn’t clear up acne. I actually had a primary care physician tell me that daily use of SPF 15 facial moisturizer would make my acne worse, not because of the product but because of the SPF. She’s no longer my physician for a number of reasons, but I’m glad to know I don’t have to choose between acne and skin cancer.

Acne is not curable! Of course, how could it be if everything around us causes to have acne! Stress, Make up, Sunscreen, etc. Although some dermatologist say is genetic, and in some cases it is but we all know the majority is due to our surroundings and what we eat. Whatever is in your body is what shows out!

I wasn’t surprised by a lot of the myths because I am 26 and I have been dealing with acne since I was in middle school.  I think that the myth about covering up acne with make up makes it worse was the one that I knew the least about and still thought that it was better not to use make up at all.  I am willing to try just about anything to make my acne go away.  My wedding is in two months and I would love for it all to be gone!!

Covering up Acne. A big reason I don’t wear makup (besides the cost and lack of talent for application) is that I thought it would make my face break out even worse.

    • Ash Johnson

Don’t wash your face more than twice a day – never knew that.

    • Carrie02005

Wearing Makeup.  Though I always thought is made it worse I still do it because I hate the redness that draws attention straight to my pimple if I don’t wear makeup.  Good to know!

    • Susie b

I’m surprised that you don’t have to wait to get rid of acne, that there are steps to shorten length of blemishes.

    • Mrs.Townsie

I am surprised to find that acne is not curable.  I have had a few friends who have told me that they have been cured through treatments like accutane (which is apparently a very strong drug).  I figured if you use something that strong, you must be able to get rid of acne forever, right?  But apparently you cannot cure acne.  Interesting…
