We all have grand plans of packing shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child and some years, you just can’t find the time or completely forget.  I wanted to let you know that you have a second chance!! Operation Christmas Child has a Build-A-Box program online.  You can pick out what you want in your box and they pack and ship it.  You just make a donation to cover the items and the shipping and you’re done.

If you can’t handle the cost of the box, you can help “adopt” a box that was built but no one provided the $7 for shipping.

Anything you can do to help get more boxes sent is awesome!!

Watching children receive these boxes in Haiti earlier this year, I was amazed that many of them had no idea what a present was.  They rejoiced at some of the simplest items in their boxes.  I met a girl from Romania that received a box when she was 12 (she’s now in her early 20’s) and her favorite thing was getting her own tube of toothpaste.  She lived in a orphanage and had to share any hygiene items they had, most of them only got to bathe and brush teeth once a week.  Seeing all of this first hand, I wish I could pack thousands of boxes.  (There is actually an amazing man outside of Macon GA that packed over 22,000 last year!)

To encourage you to pack, how about a little Christmas Giveaway.  For each entry I will also donate 50¢ towards adopting unpaid shipping on boxes.

It would be a poem my Grandmother wrote about me and had published.  She gave me the book it was published in, the original copy of the poem, and a picture of us.  It means even more because she passed away in October.

    • AmyM85

My parents got divorced when I was 17. That next Christmas, my dad presented a letter to me explaining that he didn’t know what to do with his wedding ring for a while, but decided to have it melted down and made into a heart shaped charm for a necklace, which he gave to me as a gift that year. His letter went on to explain that he wanted me to know that even though the marriage didn’t last, I was made out of love. It is, and always will be, my most favorite Christmas gift.

      • Leslie

This made me tear up.  What a sweet and thoughtful gift.

Also – thanks so much for posting a few weeks ago about the OCC boxes. My 3 kids absolutely loved picking out items for boxes for a child their age (even my 14-year-old son who normally is waaay too cool to go shopping with mom and little sis and brother (haha) really had a great time doing this!).  I had heard of OCC before but would not have remembered it probably had you not posted about it.  I can’t wait to pass along this info to my sister who wanted to do the boxes with her kiddos but missed the deadline.

I loved participating in OCC this year. It’s something to enjoy using coupons for throughout the year too!

One of the most special gifts I received was some Little Debbie’s Christmas Tree Cakes in my stocking. It was the first year I was married and I was missing Christmas with my side of the family. I told my new husband that  my mom used to put those in our stockings at Christmas. He remembered that and put in some for me. It really meant a lot.

    • amanda

My most special Christmas gift was visiting both sets of grandparents every year as a child.  I was so thankful that they lived close enough that we never had to choose whose year it was.  One of my grandmothers passed away this year and it is hard to imagine Christmas with out her.

I loved my Cabbage Patches as a child because I knew it was a huge sacrifice for my parents to buy one for me!

    • Becca4glory

One of my best Christmas gifts was when my dad (James M. Shue, USCG ret.) came home from a tour of duty in Vietnam 41 years ago. Nothing like having a loved one home in time to celebrate Christmas in tense times!

    • Millersara

We got our son on Christmas five years ago.

My most precious gift was my wedding bouquet that my mom rescuced from my reception and dried out for me.  She put the flowers in a box frame and gave it to me for Christmas.  I thought the bouquet was long gone, little did I know she saved it for me!

    • Amanda

My most special Christmas present was an engagement ring from my now husband.

    • Penrose33

I don’t remember any specific gifts that I got that were super special, but I do remember the year my kid brother got his first Swiss army knife. We spent Christmas afternoon at the ER, as he got stitches in his thumb. He’s 28 years old, and we still laugh about it every Christmas!

    • Mmleininger

The best Christmas present I ever received was getting to bring our daughter home for Christmas. She was born 7 weeks early on December 4th with many complications. She had to stay in the NICU for several weeks and had a couple of surgeries. I wasn’t even allowed to hold her in the hospital because of all the wires and tubes. We were told she wasn’t going to be coming home until January 1st but she showed such wonderful improvement the days before Christmas that they let us bring her home on Christmas Eve. Spending that first Christmas at home in front of our fire was much better than being in the hospital.

    • Shine_kels

When I was 5 years old I got a puppy jumping out of a box under our tree!  And of course Jesus is the most special Christmas gift!

This is my first Christmas with our daughter (8 mos).  As we consider family traditions, I’m thankful for all the wonderful Christmas celebrations spent with my family growing up.  Even the things I wasn’t crazy about as a kid–fruit in my stocking–are great memories that I want to carry on in our family.

    • Danyelle

My husband surprised me two years ago, he’s in the military and was deployed and was able to work it out so that he could be home for Christmas. I was in shock! Best present by far.

Being with my dad on christmas for 30 years. He passed away this year.

    • Guest

My mom made me a recipe book full of all my favorites that she cooked when I was growing up.  She typed them all up and added silly notes about remembering to take off the paper from the cheese for her lasagna recipe (something she notoriously forgot to do when she was a new wife).

    • Charlotte Schnettler

MY GRANDMOTHER AND I WERE SUPER CLOSE, SHE WAS VERY SPECIAL TO ME, I WAS CLOSER TO HER THAT MY OWN MOTHER. WE DID EVERYTHING TOGETHER. EVERY DAY WITHOUT FAIL SHE WORE A PIN WITH HER NAME ON IT WHICH WAS ANNE. ANNE IS MY MIDDLE NAME.  WHEN SHE PAST IT WAS ONE OF THE WORST DAYS OF MY LIFE.  THE CHRISTMAS AFTER SHE DIED  THERE WAS A SMALL PACKAGE IN MY STOCKING, I OPENED IT UP AND IT WAS HER PIN.  I WILL NEVER FORGET THAT PRESENT OR THAT CHRISTMAS. IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST GIFT I COULD EVER RECEIVE AND I WEAR IT ALLOT MYSELF AND WILL CHERISH IT FOREVER.

    • Hjg1098

My husband and I tried for 2 years to have a child.  Just before Christmas a few years ago we found out that we were expecting.  It was a wonderful Christmas gift.  Our parents had asked for a picture of my husband and I for Christmas so we framed the ultrasound picture and they were so surprised when they opened it.  Since then every Christmas I remember what a blessing my son is.

    • SmoochTheCook

One of my best Christmas gifts ever was my very first Lee Middleton Doll back in 1990.  We had just built our new house and my family didn’t have a lot of money because of that, so I didn’t think they’d spend a whole lot.  I had seen this baby in a shop my mom used to do some odd jobs for and LOVED her.  Christmas rolled around and I opened socks, underwear, my Hallmark ornament, and some other little odds and ends, but there were no more gifts under the tree.  My brother had gotten a really nice gift, so I wondered why, but didn’t get offended.  We were cleaning up and my parents asked me to go get a garbage bag from the closet…there sat Cherish…soooo beautiful.

    • Ashlee Taylor

I am in charge of the drama ministry at my church and I have performed a solo drama to the song “Alabaster Box” by CeCe Winans for many years. Its a beautiful description of offering all we have to Him no matter our background. A few years ago, my mother-in-law gave me a beautiful hand-painted picture of the woman with the alabaster box. Its just her face and her hair has gold flecks in it to show that precious oil that was in her hair after she washed Jesus’ feet. I still have that picture hanging in my house today and its a beautiful reminder of God’s perfect love. It was a very special Christmas gift to say the least.

My husband and son gave me a Willow Tree ornament my first Christmas as a mom

    • Terrible2s

When I was young (about 27 years ago), my dad was soooo sad at the holidays.  He was paid every Friday.  So, every Friday all us kids (at that time 4) would ask, “when are we going to get our Christmas tree???”  One night, he and my mom sat all of us down and he told us the “truth”.  There is no Santa Clause.  I will never forget the tears in his eyes while he was telling us about being 3 months behind on our house payment and sometimes in life you have to make tough decisions.  And, they needed to make the house payments.  And after making the late payments, there would be no money for Christmas.  Us kids never said a word to anyone about this.  We were so ashamed that we had no money.  Even though we had no tree, my mom had this horrible globe looking green glass lamp.  And it hung from the ceiling and the cord was woven in and out of this chain (to hide the cord, i’m sure).  So, us kids made our own ornaments and we found some lights in the garage and we decorated this chain.  It was our Christmas chain.  We would dance around the living room and sing Christmas carols.  We told Daddie it’s ok not having a Christmas tree, with the Christmas chain we have more room to dance and play in here.  Christmas day came.  Daddie went to the front door to go get the paper.  The storm door would not open.  Because our whole front porch was covered in gifts.  The most beautiful wrapped presents we had ever seen.  There were gifts for everyone and on every tag  said “from: Santa”.  And an envelope to the G_____ Family with more than enough money to catch up the house payments.  Everyone got exactly what we had wanted.  We never found out who did this.  Who knew???  My parents told no one and us kids told no one.  Every year we put up the Christmas chain at my parents house and we dance around the living room singing Christmas carols.  I am now 36 years old.  It was the most magical Christmas I have ever seen…..  Thanks again Santa!!!!

    • Studyalldaypartyallnight

my great grandfather bought me a dress in june because he said that is what she needs for christmas.  he died two weeks before christmas and the gift had been wrapped and he had wrote on the card months in advance and it was very special to have the package and dress as a gift even after he had died!!!

I think the best gift I ever received was a set of Wizard of Oz dolls. My parents knew that I LOVED the movie and knew all of Dorothy’s lines by heart so they got them. It was so special to me and I still have them!

One of my most special Christmas gift was a laptop…my parents didn’t really have the money, but they knew it would help me out when I went to college.  I know they had to make some sacrifices for it.  I really appreciated it.

    • Shawnta

My best or most thankful was when I was 8 or 9 yrs old. I had an older brother of 3 yrs and a infant baby sister.  My dad had lost his job earlier that summer. Times where very hard and food was our main priority. The Christmas tree was up and we sang Christmas carols for our neighbors. It was a true family time to just enjoy each other. An elderly lady in the neighborhood had bought three presents. One for each of us children.Mom said we had to wait till Christmas before we could open our gifts. I watched as my Mom slowly wiped the tears out of her eyes, for she knew this would be all we would get. Christmas came and it was time to open that beautiful wrapped gift that had my name on. Being the only preteen girl in our holler, I was what you would call a “tomboy.” I played with my older brother and his friends, usually football, baseball or any sports you could think of. When I opened my gift, there was this amazing doll with this sparkly peach color dress. It was a barbie doll, special edition “Peaches n Cream.” Even though I never enjoyed playing with dolls, this by far was my most precious gift of all. When I looked at it I realized that this lady who was on a very small fixed income, thought enough of us to buy us a present. From that day on I have always gave to someone who was in greater need of just feeling loved. I have worked with OCC since 93′ and love every moment of it. Samaritan Purse and  St Jude are two of my biggest heroes!!! If it wasn’t for the hard times in my life, I wouldn’t know how to give from the heart…

    • Brittany

My most special gift was a flute that my sister saved her allowance to buy me. At the time she was a child and the fact that she understood giving at such a young age was inspirational.

    • Cscathcart

While we were out of town for a week last year after Christmas, my mother-in-law came down and stayed at our house.  While there, she cleaned every inch of my house.  When I came home to a clean house, I couldn’t believe it.  It definitely brought tears to my eyes!

    • A friend crocheted me a full sized blanket! It took her forever and it was the sweetest gift ever.

My most cherished Christmas gift as a child was Mall Madness board game!  I
played the heck out of that thing.  It gave me great skills that I know use on
      my infamous shopping sprees.  Hehe

I love holiday music.. would love this
cd to listen to on our drive up to Callaway Gardens for Fantasy in Lights.

Having my son was a great christmas gift.

The lady who babysat me when I was in grade school started giving me Classic Barbie Ornaments every year.  She was like a grandmother to me.  She passed away 3 years ago, and I still buy a Barbie Ornament every year and even have a separate Barbie Christmas tree.  I think about all the things Mrs. Rockwell taught me (like not counting on my fingers:D )  growing up every time I see that tree all lit up.

I too am from Haiti.  I would say greatest gift is to be with family and friends for christmas.

Reading all of the comments, puts me in tears!:) The best Christmas gift ever was when my son asked Jesus to be his Savior. By far the BEST gift!!

I can never remember what I get. I always remember who I was with though.

There is no greater love than the love of Christ.

    • Alicia

all of these comments are so sweet, and I must agree Jesus is the best gift ever!
I did get a nice study Bible last year with what was soon to be my new married name on it! :)

The gift of Jesus is my greatest gift.  And seeing my daughter accept Him and be baptized on Christmas day was a special gift.  Thank you for supporting the shoebox ministry.

      My wedding ring ~

    • Heidimund

Recently , at my kids’ school, they had a speaker from Operation come and share stories about kids that have received these boxes.  He told of a young boy who was not opening his box.Whenasked why, he said that all he wanted for Christmas was a family and there was no way that was in the box.  anyway, he opened it and loved the items inside.  Especially a photo and card from the family that created the box.  the speaker said that the volunteer called the family when he was back stateside and told the family what had happenned.  The man said, my wife and I have just decided to adopt a boy.  Amazingly, they were able to get that very child.  Can you imagine a better Christmas gift?

My almost 14 year old son came in the room as I was pondering this one–then it hit me–he was a very special Christmas gift.  Born December 20th, after many months of bedrest, his arrival was quite a blessing!

    • Polly

The greatest gift is Jesus Christ.  I am also thankful for the gift of a healthy child born a few days before Christmas.

My parent’s ran A small grocery when I was about 5 years old. One day I found a dollar on the ground and wanted to use it to buy a doll that they sold in the store there was a red haired ,a blonde haired and black haired to choose from  and I couldn’t make up my mind .Mom refused to let me buy any because she said i did not have enough to cover the tax, I was a little upset but never considered throwing “a fit” because that was not accepted behavoir. Christmas day I received not one but all three of the dolls. My Mom told me later, when I no longer believed in Santa Clause, that as soon as they had gotten the dolls in she had set aside one of each for me.

    • Blessedalwaysforever

Last Christmas, my husband wrote me a love letter that I will keep forever :-)

    • Mendy

Both of my sons were born right after Christmas :)

    • My favorite Christmas gift growing up was a Texas Instruments Speak & Spell.  :)

    • Kendra

You are AWESOME to donate toward the shipping! My favorite gift was an electronic keyboard…that I still have and my kids use!

    • My most memorable, and funniest, gift was the new toilet seat and lid from my hubby one year. Giving my little boys a bath was complicated by the fact that the toilet lid, where I would sit, was flimsy and would cave in, pop up, and slide around while I tried to man-handle two slippery little boys in the tub. It was so funny, I even had him take my pic looking through the seat like a frame.

    • Cmskelton

The first and most important gift was the Christ child, but materially speaking probably the engagement ring that I received  7 years ago!

    • Mrsbolinger

After the comment by Heidimund, I can’t think of a gift that doesn’t pale in compairson.  The only gift that could even be better than that is salvation.

    • Sheenabsb

      My first bicycle!!!

    • Kelbeland4

I love these comments!  I can’t even really remember exactly what I get from year to year but I do remember lots of good times with my family.

    • Tarashanko

Last year my husband (and kiddos) replaced a Tiffany’s necklace that I lost. Hands down the best gift ever!

    • Jschriefer

When I was 8 years old my 23-year-old brother bought me an adult woman’s sweater–the same one he bought for my older sister and sister-in-law.  It was way too big but it made me feel like I was part of the adult women in the family.  It seemed all wrong but it was just right.

A stuffed toy lion given by my parents.

My best gift was the year my hubby bought me a computer. I was using a very out-dated, very slow hand me down just a few years ago.  He doesn’t care much for computers. So, he really put me first when he purchased one for me.  Doesn’t sound that special, but for me it was!

    • Jaggreer

It was a gift I gave away. A college ring to my 80 year old father who had lost his years before.

    • Cwwteachermom

      Dollhouse – when I was a kid.

    • Dawnbakeringram

The most special Christmas gift I have received is having my parents come up to visit us, instead of having to make the 15 hour drive with 3 kids!

    • Rachel

A teddy bear, I’m still sleeping with it today. :)

    • Kristen

A very big teddy bear that my dad got for me.  I named her Big Tess (not sure why) but my dad passed away two years after I received that bear and it made it more special.

    • TAA

a baby doll the year my brother was diagnosed with leukemia – a neighbor church gave each of us a Christmas gift

    • Meegan

Getting to hunt down the “family” present via a treasure hunt that got more and more elaborate each year (think invisible ink and clues written on a mirror you can only read with fog from a shower) was always the best present.  My dad’s treasure hunts live in my heart today even though most of the gifts are gone!

    • Michelle

I <3 doing the shoeboxes; can't wait for my daughter to get old enough to help and understand what it is about. Most special gift … not sure; just love Christmas time. :)

    • Ashley S.

I got a spring horse when I was about seven years old and I LOVED it! :)

When I was 25, I was homeless. My favorite gift for Christmas was that year` a
family from the church I had visited ( for the first time ever to visit any
church) hunted down the homeless shelter i was staying in to bring me my only
christmas gift~ a sugar cake. It meant more to me that they would come to the
“bad” side of town to remember me, it was their heart that touched
      me.

Jenny, we are going to try and do OCC year round now. Maybe you could
keep the OCC symbol to do that? We are trying for one box per family member per
month~ for 72 boxes a year! Thanks for all you do.

    • Sajantz

My most special gift I had for Christmas 3 years ago was spending time with my mom. She passed away suddenly 6 months later :( I would do anything to have the gift of spending Christmad with her again. :(
