A thought… We got on a little tangent about coffee but please remember that the #1 need of all homeless shelters is coffee!  They would love to have this and it will only cost a penny.

    • Mina

Ah! Publix is cooperating and helping me to save gas this week! ;-)
I won’t be to think of reasons that I *need* to make any unscheduled trips the next couple of days.

My crew is finicky about their coffee, and they weren’t too happy that I made them use white bread this past week. I think I’ll stay in better graces with them if I just take a pass on this week’s offer. Maybe I’ll be lucky and they’ll be subbing a surprise when I do go. I like the surprises, whatever they wind up being.

      • CouponNERD

Mina- I like surprises too! One Publix location here subbed kitchen utensils for the white bread last week. I got some much needed spatulas, then got bread on my next trip.
I do my main Publix run on Saturday mornings now, then save a few items for a Penny Item run. Or, try back for some out of stock items on Sun/Mon.

      • Cori

Love the subs sometimes, when I went the week before last they had these yummy voila frozen meals. I got penne with vegetables and creamy tomato sauce!

        • Mina

Wow! That IS a cool one! The last sub I received was a can of green beans in lieu of the sports bottled water. Not fancy, but useful. It was sort of funny because I’d been giving most of my penny items away, but was looking forward to the water for home.

      • I always have to pass on the coffee too, my husband is true to Maxwell House. I have tried to trick him by pouring the Publix version in his Maxwell House container but he can always tell.

        • Sandy

Too funny! I do that with shampoo & conditioner but my kids can always tell.

    • Rebecca

The food bank will gladly take the coffee.

    • Angie

In B’ham the Publix on Valleydale subbed Moon Pies!

    • Melissa L

Did anyone have problems with the Greenville news this morning? I received very few ads in my paper and only the smart source insert.

      • Cori

I had bunches of ads in my home delivered Greenville News and all 3 coupon inserts, RP, SS and PG. I always check the store boughts though before I pay for them.

      • Patty

Got all three as expected….SS, RP and P&G

    • jj

I guess I’m the odd one here, we can’t tell the difference between the publix special roast and the folgers we normally use. I guess maybe it’s because of using a percolator? We had to buy better coffee but when we quit using the drip coffeemaker it helped so much I can use all but the cheapest kinds and it’s fine. FYI if you were ever wondering about the coffee in the big cans at Aldi, that stuff (the cheapest kind!) is basically undrinkable.
So I will split this week’s shopping between the two stores I normally go to, so I can get two coffees! :0)

    • AngelaDH

Sorry to sound clueless but I’m not a coffee drinker. What is the difference between this and coffee grounds?

      • jj

Coffee beans need to be ground up and have hot water run through them to make coffee. You can buy whole beans and grind them yourself if you want it super fresh and can taste the difference (I can’t, I put so much cream and sugar in mine). Or, you can get it already ground which is how it comes for the free Publix kind – in a little vacuum packed brick.

‘Coffee grounds’ is what you call the coffee after it’s been brewed. The ground up beans that are in the filter after water has been run through it, this is what people are talking about if they refer to putting coffee grounds around rosebushes or composting them. They don’t mean to sprinkle unused coffee although I guess you could do that too if you don’t drink it but want to use it.

        Hope that helps!

        • AngelaDH

          Thanks!

    • Blech…I do not care for their coffee. I think I’ll shop on Monday night in hopes that they’re out of the coffee and subbing something else.

      October 11, 2009
I am in McDonough, GA. I was looking forward to Publix coffee. Instead, my Publix had Gator Ade! I gave mine to the dad behind me shopping with his 3 boys!

    • Bonnie

June-that was nice of you-as a mom of four sons I’m sure it was appreciated!

    • Ginger

As far as store brands go publix ones are the best and we drink a lot of coffee so this penney item makes me happy last time I got one coffe on Sun and Mon they sub Dominos sugar so it was a win win and I need coffee !! Is anyone else having trouble printing coupons? Me and several of my fellow couponing friends cant get the coupons to print anymore at first it was no problem now it keeps telling us to install Java which is installed but we did it again that didnt work and sometimes it says install coupon printer which is also installed and have tried to troubles shoot and reinstall multiple times that also doesnt work I just think its odd that all four of us are having the same problem.

      • Ginger, I kept having this same issue even though I had installed Java. I still get the error msg, but if I hit “back” I get to a page showing that my coupons are printing and it works. I hope this solves your problem.

      • Phillis

Ginger, I have been having this problem for a long time. I have tried everything. If you find a solution please e-mail me at phillis.rogers58@gmail.com.

    • stephanie

We aren’t picky here about coffee – BUT if you are, try mixing it half and half with what you are used too. It might help stretch the stuff you like a little further.

      Or, donate it.

I always get the penny item. My kids are so used to wheat bread, last week they had a blast feeing the ducks with our penny bread.

    • Jan

Publix at Laurel Canyon in Canton, GA substituted V-8 Fusion.

    • Leah

Publix in Simpsonville was pop corn…

    • Amy

Publix coffee is really bad. I like so many different brands and am not brand sensitive at all but their coffee is full of CHICORY and reminds me of boiled mulch. This is one of the few areas Publix needs to make a big change. Who would actually pay for the stuff. I would rather give the food bank something that someone could enjoy like canned goods with a pop top for the homeless. Publix, improve your coffee please.

      • Amy

PS I have tried mixing it half and half with other brands. It just ruins them. I wish I could be more positive about it but it is a bummer when the penny item is this coffee.

      • Jan

I have found that the Publix Espresso roast is tolerable. I like bold roasts, and this is the only one Publix sells that actually has a coffee taste.

        • Amy

Thanks for the tip! I may try it if they still are doing the coffee today for the penny item.

    • Gabi

Publix on Two Notch in Columbia, SC substituted a 6-pack of water.

    • mama

      Hi
I’m from Taiwan. I don’t understand the penny item thing.
      can someone teach me please?

      • Susan

Publix has a coupon in Sunday papers or ads that has a little penny on it, trying to entice you into the store on Sunday or Monday to find out what the “mystery item” is. (You can also find out what it is on this site.) When you spend $10 and have this coupon, you can get the mystery item for 1 cent. This week, it was coffee for most stores. Last week, it was a loaf of bread. It’s also been cookies, bottles of water, and lots of other things. You can only redeem the coupon on Sunday or Monday each week and have to spend $10 in your order to get the item for 1 cent. I live in Georgia, but from what I understand, Florida Publix stores do not offer the penny item. Hope this helps!

        • mama

          Thank you, Susan.
I live in Orlando, FL. I guess we don’t have the penny item here :(

    • amy

Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.
I love that Publix does the penny item.
I don’t drink coffee but I’ll take it.
I can give it away or donate with my food boxes.
      No coffee or publix coffee?

    • Tracy

I love that Publix does the penny item! If it’s something we won’t use we pass it on to someone who will.

    • Susan

I love the penny item, too. I have found that, though we don’t drink the “brick of coffee” that is often offered, lots of shut-in elderly people enjoy when I pass this on to them. I also share other items when we are overloaded–last week I got 3 loaves of bread (bought the double Atlanta Journal-Constitution and received our local paper as a surprise in the driveway). I just took a loaf of this bread up to my corner CVS today and gave it to my favorite cashier.

    • Vanessa

I’m in Dunwoody, Ga and our Publix substituted the coffee for Country Time lemonade or kool-aid! It was a great deal since we already drink that, although the coffee would have been nice too!

    • Michelle

When does the penny item usually get published? I am new to all of this. Thanks!
