**Note: FL and Coastal GA stores DO NOT participate in the Penny Item**

A thought… You will not get much closer to free, so if you don’t need, like or want this item, then give it away. There are many folks that would probably love it!

    • Kristy

Question, where do we get the coupon for the penny item? The Sunday paper carries the current ad, will it start carrying a penny coupon for the next week’s sale?

      • Jenny

It will be in the actual paper, like a regular box ad. Just to be difficult.

        • suellen

is it supposed to come out in the same paper that the new sales flyer is in….if so, wasn’t in our local community paper last night, which really stinks!!!

        • Tabitha

Too bad our flyer gets delivered on Thursday (one day late)…

      • ashley

We called our store this morning when we couldnt find it and they said it didnt get out so they were not going to require us to actually have the coupon to get the chips.

    • sandra

      not worth the time….

      • Christy

i’m with you on that one!

      • Yep, it just crossed the line into too hard after work and before church and everything.

    • Susan

The coupon is on Page 3C of the Greenville News.

    • Jennifer (palmettosweetheart)

Has anyone found it in the Post & Courier yet. I’ve heard from two different ladies that said it wasn’t. It also wasn’t in the Post & Couriers Tuesday Circular mailers. :(

      • MarySC

        It was in today’s paper.

      • MarySC

        It was in today’s paper

      • ashley

Publix in West Ashley will not require you to have the coupon to get the free penny chips.

        • Cheryl

3A in the post and courier

      • Abi

Yes it is in the ad for publix in the paper today. It is on the very back page of the circular.

    • Got the paper this morning…can’t find it anywhere…looked at the publix ad insert and throughout the paper???

      • Dianne

Does your Publix start it’s week on Wednesday or Thursday? I think the ad is in your paper only on the day the “week” starts.

    • Jamie

Is the DiGiorno pizza $1.25 like Jenny said or $2.25? I see it advertised for more than 1.25.

    • Jennifer (palmettosweetheart)

I just spoke with my Publix. Dorchester Rd in North Charleston. The ad is on page A-3 of the Post & Courier. Also, the store manager, Arnold, is still having the store copy the coupon so it will NOT be needed for their customers.

      I LOVE my Publix!!!

      • Denise

Thanks for posting, I looked throught the paper and totally missed it! I love that Publix too!

    • Emily

Anyone find it in the Birmingham News?

      • terra

I have not been able to locate the coupon in the birmingham news…but I could have missed it all the “BAMA” football stuff…if anyone stops it – please pass it on!

        thanks

        • terra

          **CORRECTION**

If anyone SPOTS it – please let me know.

          • Marie

I could not find it in the Birmingham News…probably got ‘footballed’ out but the store let us have the item anyway…one of the cashiers could not find it either

        • sara

          Found it on 4A

          • Carla

Same here! And the Publix is crazy with all this talk of snow….

          • Sarah

Out of curiosity – does anyone have issues like I do with actually getting the Publix flyer in the Wednesday paper? We are in Chelsea/Columbiana and I get the Birmingham News delivered but do not get the flyer, which is ridiculous. Wondering if the penny item ad will also be an issue and if anyone knows? I couldn’t find the penny item this week on Wed.

    • Emily

Penny Item coupon isn’t required to purchase the penny item at the SPARTANBURG, SC store on EAST MAIN STREET.

    • Christy

I don’ usually buy a mid-week paper. Sounds like they are trying to sell more papers. I don’t think its worth the trouble.

    • Beachgirl

Page A 5 in the State newspaper Columbia, SC today Wed 1/5/10

      • Denise

        Thanks!!!

Wasn’t sure if it was today or tomorrow’s paper!

    • Yes, it ceases to be a penny item when you have to purchase the weekday paper.

      • Michelle

well said, hopefully this won’t last long

        • Traci M.

          I second the motion …

    • kat

called the Publix at Lake Dow. The q will be in Thursdays Herald and the Thursday AJC…….I verified that you DO need the coupon….not worth it for me.

      • Redawna

I agree — if you have to spend 1.00 to buy the Atlanta Journal then it is just not worth the hassle!

    • Michelle

The Lexington, SC store will not require the coupon but would prefer you to have it. It is in today’s issue of The State in the A section.

    • .Jennifer

Please take the comment below to be only complaining about Publix’s new policy. Obviously this isn’t Jenny’s fault and I would never complain about Jenny because I think she is an earth bound angel for all that she does for us. Just wanted to make that clear…

      This stinks for several reasons:
      1. I don’t buy a mid-week paper. Not sure if I would really be saving any money after the cost of the paper. I don’t even know how much our mid-week paper is!
      2. The ad starts the same day as the penny item. I can either go out and blow $10.00 to get the penny item (we all know how far $10.00 goes without our coupons!) because I haven’t been able to plan my trip yet or I have to let the penny item pass me by since I won’t even have my stuff together until Friday afternoon (the first chance I have to pull all the coupons, etc). Normally I would plan my Sunday trip on Friday.

I sure hope Publix doesn’t stick to this, or that it isn’t the first step in phasing out the penny item all together.

      • Colleen

I totally agree with you! I’m not ready yet either with the coupons and don’t want to go spend $10 just to get it- but it also stinks NOT to get it, esp.this week with the chips (my husband’s favorite). I didn’t make it in today so that’s it.
I wonder if they would change it back if enough people complained- or like you said, just phase it out? Hmm.

        • Nikki J.

Wednesday’s paper in Ooltewah TN at the Dollar Store was .35. It was on the last page of the first section of the paper. I won’t be participating much either, as it’s only valid for one day and I don’t shop till the weekend.

    • Jeanine

So far the publix at Northlake in Tucker,GA does not have a penny item for the week. The CS rep said they are not sure when they will have them back. She also said they don’t know yet how they will get the coupon out but it may be put in the Tuesday paper and valid on the weekend. I checked the AJC for cirulars and there were not any today. Additionally, the free paper we get on Wednesday did not have a publix ad at all (which is usually does). I have not been to the other publix in Tucker (off Hugh Howell) yet to see if they are offering a penny item this week.

      • Alyssa

Hugh Howell Publix (Tucker) should have the penny item available tommorrow, since DeKalb & Gwinnett Publix stores start their weekly ad on Thursdays.
I haven’t gotten my Dekalb freebie paper yet, but my MIL got hers and no Publix ad at all…

        • Traci M.

Same here, I usually get the ‘freebie’ flyers and papers on Wed. and I didn’t receive my Publix ad…….not good, and not a good start to the new way of doing the mystery item !

      • ShelleySchu

I haven’t found it either. I ONLY buy the Sunday AJC to get the coupons and the Publix penny item coupon. I am a regular subscriber to the Marietta Daily Journal which has coupons but not as many as the AJC. I also think that the AJC is desperate for sales and wants to push us to buy the paper on a different day. Let me know if you find it — tortilla chips are a staple at our house. :-)

        • Beth

Shelly – Check your “Neighbor” paper. Paulding Neighboe had it on page 3B.

        • Katherine

The AJC had in the Thursday paper on page D2

    • kristin

Old habits die hard- I want it back in the Sunday paper. A grocery run on a Wednesday seems to not make the penny item worth it to me. Oh well, still love Publix just an old dog not wanting to learn a new trick.

    • Amy

As Jennifer stated above, this is in no way directed at jenny or SS, but I just have to vent. This new policy on the penny item gripes me to no end.
1- I only buy the Sunday paper. I don’t want to have to buy a weekday paper for ONE item.
2- I ONLY shop for groceries at Publix. I used to be a Kroger-only girl, but once I started with SS, I realized that for the most part, Publix is the way to go. (So even though I am saving with coupons now, Publix has gained a NEW loyal customer in me)
3- I NEVER try to “cheat” the system. I abide by their coupon policies and I am never rude or demanding.
4- My store add says “Prices effective Friday, Jan 1 through Wednesday, Jan 6, 2010” but the penny item is on THURSDAY! So, if i want to get sale prices AND the penny item, I have to make 2 trips per week! (in addition to buying an extra paper) GRRRRR!!!
So, that being said, sadly- I guess there will be no penny items for me anymore. It’s just not worth it! :-(

      • lynn

i totally agree with you amy, i also try to abide by the rules, several people in my area have really caused problems with coupons because they were being greedy and deceitful, but i also agree with many others here i am not going to spend 75 cents for a paper to get one thing for a penny and i hate that i don’t have the opportunity to plan out my shopping like i did when it was on sunday/monday, this is frustrating!!!!!!!!!!! btw, Jenny does do an AWESOME job it is not SS or Jenny it is Publix with this move that i am hating.

        • shannon billingsley

Im so thankful to Jenny for Southern Savers and I think this move by Publix stinks too! I even went as far as to email Publix and explain why. I really think this is a terrible idea and if enough people tell the corp office Publix will listen.

          • Traci M.

Bingo ! There you go Shannon…..I was just about to tell Amy to email Publix.com (not that they will listen, but it is a shot to get a grassroots campaign going). I’m sure they have been looking at a way to save money and this was one of the ways and they aren’t going to change soon…..but it still feels good to email them !

            • Teresa

Publix has always responded to my e-mails, by e-mail and phone. E-mail them – they care!

    • I hate to come over here to complain, but I think this is a bad move in Publix’s part.

I understand moving the penny item coupon to coincide with the day the new sales start. That makes sense to me.

But why can’t the coupon be IN the new sales ad? Why does it have to be in the actual newspaper?

I don’t subscribe the weekly paper, just the weekend. And I won’t be buying Wednesday’s paper just to get the penny item coupon.

(Like the Jennifer above, this complaint is totally against Publix… NOT Southern Savers or Jenny!)

      • Glory

The complaint should be against all the coupon ABUSERS that’s the bottom line on all the changes…People abuse the polices and they get canned…………plain and simple…………

    • lynn

i never get a publix sales paper in my free newspaper that comes on wednesday although ALL of the other stores in the area are there, i refuse to buy a paper just for the penny item, i am sooooo glad that everyone else understands how i feel!

    • Donna Rubright

I think that the reason Publix did it is:

      1. To save money. Only have the penny item for one day instead of two days means less penny items to basically give away.
      2. Get more traffic in the middle of the week. They are now getting more traffic on Sundays and Mondays because of the penny item and maybe their Wednesdays and Thursdays are suffering. Plus, they probably have to have more people working at the start of sale days just to change over displays, sale prices, etc. so they would rather not have to staff three busy days, just the penny item day (plus Saturday which I would bet would be their busiest day.

The purpose of the penny item is for them to make money and control when they have us come into the store. It is just like a Resturant.com restaurant saying that a gift certificate we buy from there is not good on Fridays and Saturdays. They don’t need us on Fridays and Saturdays. And Publix obviously does not want us to come on Sunday and Monday anymore.

    • Jen

I would be happy if Publix would include the Penny Item coupon in the circular at the store – stating that it is good for the specific day, and the restrictions of the coupon…with $10 purchase, whatever. I think a better move on Publix’s part would be to increase the minimum purchase needed for the coupon and enforce that, instead of restricting the availability of the “coupon”. That would be a win-win for most people. Publix gets more sales overall, we don’t have to search for a coupon.

    • Nan

ATTENTION PUBLIX CORPORATE AND GREENVILLE MCBEE STATION MANAGERS….In the past week, a cashier grumbled at me for having coupons (which were very organized), another STOPPED MY TRANSACTION TO RESPOND TO A TEXT, and today the cashier practically laughed me out of the store for asking for the penny item without the coupon which I couldn’t find in the paper this morning. I am a sneeze away from moving my biz to BiLo.

      • There’s no excusing rudeness!!! However, Store Managers really do want to know about this, so make some time to go in and talk to him/her. If there’s no resolution, then move on but only after letting the corporate office know why. They are very serious about customer satisfaction and sometimes a “Talkk to” by the District Manager will resolve all problems.

      • Snellmom

I had a situation where a cashier gave me a lot of grief one time over my coupons. I went up and spoke with the manager afterward, and as I was leaving the store, she went up there to speak to her. I never had another problem.

    • Robin

Page A9 of Chattanooga Times Free Press ;-)

      • Terri

Won’t be buying Chatt. Times just for the coup. Oh well!

        • Nikki J.

It’s 35 cents at the Dollar Store.

      • Melissa

It is not on my A9- I can’t find it anywhere???

      • Melissa

Also I didn’t have a BiLo sale ad either. Wondering if my paper was messed up

    • Does anyone know where it is in the AJC?? Thanks!!

      • Katherine

It is in the Thursday paper in the Living section. Page D2

    • Katherine

When I went to Publix today, there were publix store coupons available when you donate $1, $3 or $5 to the special olympics. The store coupons are $1 off Downy, $1 off Charmin, $1 Crest Rinse, $1 off Pampers and $1 off 2 Old Spice or Secret Deodorant!!!

    • angie

I liked the penny coupon on sunday and monday because i had the weekend to plan my monday trip with my mom. now i dont knw when we will have the time to get to publix for the penny item on wensday. i refuse to go to the store without planning my trip first..stinks..

    • Snellmom

I was in the Publix on Scenic Hwy in Snellville (in Target shopping center) today. They had posted that the new penny item begins tomorrow (1/7) and they will start requiring the coupon on 1/21. I’m curious to know what other stores around here will be doing, especially since I only go to this particular Publix when I have Target (competitors) coupons.

I found it pretty funny that it said they would start requiring it because this is one I usually avoided with the penny coupon because they were so strict about having it. I would be buying my two sets of double papers and they cashier would insist I dig through them to find the coupon.

    • Sarah

Woo hoo! I had a great find at Publix this evening. Close to the deli there was a display of Crystal Light – on this display were booklets of recipes from Kraft. The booklet is called “healthier wallet, happier you.” The booklet not only contains recipes, but also contains $10 worth of Kraft foods coupons. All of the coupons are $1 or $1.50. Also I saved over 50% on this shopping trip! Thanks Jenny!

    • Teresa

I hate this new policy too but the best option is to contact Publix headquarters and voice your opinion. If enough people do, we might convince them to change it back.

Here’s what I put in the comment section of their e-mail contact form – you can save yourself some typing if you want to cut and paste.

“I noticed that you are no longer including the penny coupon in the Sunday paper and put it in the Wed paper. I have to say that since my demographic and age group reads most of their news online and doesn’t buy the paper, I likewise only get the Sunday paper for the coupons and won’t ever get a weekday paper. One of the other reasons I have been getting the Sunday paper is for the penny coupon and I make a point of shopping at Publix on Sunday or Monday to use it. I hope you will reconsider putting the coupon back in the Sunday paper. Without it, I lose some of my incentive to shop at Publix, versus the other 4 major stores in my area, even though shopping at Publix truly is a pleasure. Thanks for your consideration.”

      • Traci M.

Teresa, nicely stated…..I wonder what the manager will say when they call you back ! BTW, very well put about reading the news ‘online’, which is true !

      • Glory

BINGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Publix is truly a pleasure to shop with or without the penny item….Don’t you think THEY know this. They offered the penny item as an added bonus…too bad SO MANY people had to ABUSE their generosity. I hope they stick to their rules and REQUIRE the coupon as it was meant to be, makes people like me (one who ALWAYS brought the coupon) feel like I’m getting a mystery treat.

    • Jimbo

The penny item coupon is on Page D2 (Living section) of the Thursday Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Publix is great about so many things (they won me over from Kroger long ago) but I think they laid an egg on this one! Since they seem to respond well to consumer input, I say everybody who doesn’t like the new arrangement should fill out customer suggestion/complaint cards at the stores. I also think Publix will find far fewer customers using the coupons and their total store traffic will suffer, especially on Mondays. Of course, maybe they were just looking for a way to discontinue the penny item program and this lets them ease out of it rather than just dropping it entirely and getting tons of negative feedback.

    • Karen Henrichsen

The Wednesday paper? What’s up with that? We have a Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday subscription for the Atlanta Journal Constitution and don’t even read them. I’m NOT going to purchase a Wednesday paper just for a package of hot dogs that I don’t use. Publix may as well just stop doing this – ridiculous!!!

      • Snellmom

It is in the Thursday paper for the AJC since our sales begin on Thursday. It was in the Living section on page 2 according to the cashier.

Also the Loganville paper had it in there next to the weather section. So, if you get these little papers around Atlanta, it will probably be in there. Today I just had to ask for it because it is a new policy.

    • Katherine

If anyone in the Atlanta area is looking for the coupon, its in the living section on page D2. It states is valid for 1/7/10 only…..I wonder if those counties whose ad starts on Wednesday will be required to honor the ad on Thursday. All counties are within metro area and can receive AJC…

      • Lee Ann

I was getting very upset b/c I could not find the coupon in the Flyer, so thank you! So I guess now we have to hunt for the coupon….I hate this!!!

    • Val

I really don’t mind the penny item being on Wednesday. I was making to visits a week to Publix in the past. I would go the day the ad came out and then again on Sunday or Monday to finish off my shopping and get the penny item. I think I will like making one trip a week.

      • Val

        *two*

    • Pam

Thanks Katherine for stating where the penny coupon was in the Atlanta paper.

    • Julie

I personally do not mind it being on Wed here – it came in our free paper so I did not have to buy anything to get it. Also, our penny item was for ANY variety of Publix chips (not just torilla) which made me happy. I admit though, that if it was not in our free paper, I would have been upset because I do not buy wed. papers.

    • Lisa

Publix began the penny item when it branched out of Florida in an attempt to bring Kroger, FoodLion, Bruno’s, etc customers into the store to “check it out.” It was never meant to be a “forever” deal. Florida stores never have and never will have a penny item and they do not have a senior discount day. We as a group of individuals need to be grateful that they even offer it to us instead of having the mentality of they owe me this because that’s where I shop. The same goes for any coupons, they take most competitor coupons, try THAT at Wal-Mart (I got the sorry that is a gimmick and not an actual coupon response). Publix will eventually phase the penny item out, it is a major lose for the company just as BOGOs are. They do not get reimbursed for BOGOs nor do they receive special deals. Bottom line…say thank you not complain.

      • Glory

        THUMBS UP to you Lisa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • marina

Went to publix today and it was slammed!! I’ve never seen the parking lot so full on a Thursday. I guess changing the penny item day brought in a lot of traffic. I did however drive by on Sunday, which is usually a very busy day, and there were very little customers. They might lose they’re Sunday shoppers because of the change.

      • Glory

It was prolly due to the weather Marina…not the penny item…HAHAHAHA

    • Snellmom

I went to Publix today. I’m trying to get my grocery routine on Thursdays because I can go without my kids. If you want to take advantage of the penny coupon, take note of all the awesome advantage buy ads/coupons that Jenny has posted. Those are good for about a month, so you can stop by Publix and take advantage of the penny coupon and purchasing some of the advantage buy deals. I went in today and got the J&J bandages, some vitamins and a couple other items that we needed. I’ll probably do another run this weekend because I wasn’t able to prepare my coupons and list yesterday.

I’m in Atlanta, so my ad starts on Thursday.

      • .Jennifer

That is an excellent point! We can shop the advantage buys or any rainchecks we may have too on Wednesday/Thursday and save our big trip for a more convenient time.

You are one smart cookie. I don’t know why I didn’t think of that!!! :-)

    • Heather

Went to Publix in Alpharetta on Hwy 9 today. The manager said they are not requiring the coupon this week because it was not in the paper. I was looking for a publix flyer and there wasn’t one. I didn’t look within the paper with is apparently where it was. But either way, I bought some gatorade and pepsi, got my penny item as well as a free cloth bag (coupon is in the flyer in the front of the store). It was a good trip for me :)

    • Crystal

Okay guys I am a little new at this so..I know my Publix takes Target coupons. My question is in the ad they have Juicy Juice BOGO and I have a Manufacturer’s Coupon for $1/2. Can I stack my Target Web coupon with the Manufacturer’s Coupon? If so this would be a great deal.

      • Crystal

sorry I put this in the wrong place!

      • Jenny

        You can!

    • Miranda

Attention Charleston Shoppers: The Publix on Sam Rittenberg’s Manager George is refusing to honor World Marlet coupons with no additional signage posted to indicate policy change. Very rude and so we left a full cart to shop elsewhere. This location has previously been honorable. Will contact headquarters. Also noted that teenage checkout girl was unkempt and impolite and Publix house brands unstocked. Again, not ususally how they’ve done business in the past.

      • Lisa

World Market is not a traditional grocery store, it is a home decor store with some food items. This could be the reason for the “policy change.” Publix overall does NOT have an official policy on coupons, it is left up to the individual managers at each store. It would be nice if there was an official policy but until then…well.

    • Lynna

My Publix in Birmingham at the Lee Branch shopping center is requiring us to have the coupon and my cashier said it would be in the Sunday paper. I scoured the paper this morning and couldn’t find it. Anyone know something on this? Sunday, Wednesday… I am confused. :(
