The Mystery Penny Item at Publix for Wednesday 2/10 or Thursday 2/11, is:

Publix Soda 2 Liter

You can get the Publix Penny item with any purchase that is $10 or more before coupons. There is a Mystery Penny Item coupon in the Wednesday or Thursday Paper every week . Some stores do not require this coupon, but many have changed and do require it now, check with your store to find their policy.

The Penny Item is now for one day only, and will be the day that the add starts in your area. This is Wednesday for all of SC and AL, and parts of GA, or Thursday for Northern GA.

Get all of this weeks Publix Deals and Coupon Matches! There is also a *new* Yellow Advantage Buy Flyer and a fairly new Green Advantage Buy with lots of other deals!.

**Note: FL and Coastal GA stores DO NOT participate in the Penny Item**

A thought… You will not get much closer to free, so if you don’t need, like or want this item, then give it away. There are many folks that would probably love it!

    • louise

Unfortunately, now you have to have the coupon on hand to get the penny item – so the item has to be worth the .75 the paper costs if you don't get it delivered (and we don't because we get USA Today and not our small, boring local paper). My question is whether all these changes are part of a deal that Publix has with each local newspaper company – why else make us have the coupon on hand and not offer it online at all? I love Publix, but the changes in the mystery penny item have made me loose a little of the love!

    • Jenni

These 2-liters were on sale last week for what, .50 cents a piece? So if I buy the local .50 newspaper, and then pay the penny, it will actually cost me MORE than the previous sale? The changes to the penny program continue to not make it worth the trip. (I live 17 minutes away from the closest Publix, and I used to consider the penny item as paying for my gas to go out of my way.) Publix REALLY needs to amend their new policy. Why can't they publish the coupon in the Sunday paper as well, but you just have to wait until Wednesday to use it? Unless they are getting a kickback from increased Wednesday paper sales, there is no reason for them not to.

      • millsshop

I was told in our local Publix, that it was to help boost local paper sales. I don't know if they are getting a kickback, but it is definitely designed to make you buy a Wednesday paper. I rarely find a “penny” item that I want to pay 76c for any more :-(

        • Jenni

Well, and now that I think about it, they make a decent amount of money off of those papers, which they wouldn't otherwise sell so many of, and they must be thinking it will help them off-set the cost of nearly giving away the penny item.

    • Elaine

There is a $1.00 of Garnier Fuctis at Rite Aid Video Value Ad Perks. Stack with man coupon if your Publix allows.

For those of you in the Columbia area, who like me, only get the Sunday edition of The State paper, you can go to their website and sign up to get a free one day version of the e-copy of the paper. Once you sign on, you get a full pdf version of the paper where you can click on the Publix q ad and print it as a pdf. The State is also running a promotion to lure “us weekend only readers” where we will get the Monday-Wednesday ecopy for free for a limited time. I won't have to buy a Wednesday paper to get the q- at least for as long as this promotion runs.

I asked the cashier in the Taylor's store and she said that they will slowly do away with the penny coupon. They changed to Wed because of the elderly complaining about having to come back into the store on Sun or Mon for the special.

    • Boo

Is there a limit to how many of the penny items you can purchase? If I spend only $10, does that mean I only get 1 of the penny item????

      • Gabi

Boo, you can only get ONE of the penny items with each coupon. And you can only use one coupon per visit.

        • Boo

Thanks. I don't think it is worth it this week. I just started on this site and couponing and I HATE that I missed out on the sugar!

          • Publix2002

Can you please tell me what a penny item is and how it works?

    • dgram41

The penny item is just a sprinkle on a cupcake for me considering I just saved 63% on my groceries at Publix this morning.

    • CJ

Has any other area Publix been changing their penny item? For the last two weeks a local Birmingham, AL Publix has changed the penny item from what is posted on Southern Savers. Just curious to see if anybody else is having this problem?

      • melissa j

Here in Prattville,AL Publix did the same thing last week. I made a special trip to get the sugar for 2-3-10 and they only had the publix brand coffee. Wasted a trip cause I dont drink coffee.

    • boyzrus3

I usually my coupon from a friends paper or from my mother in law. So far I haven't had to buy one.

    • gailc63

Humm…I went to to Publix on Harbison this morning with no coupon as usual and no problem getting the penny item. (Irmoi, SC)

    • Mandy

Has anyone else noticed that since the switch it is always a Publix brand item? Not complaining, just noticed… Used to be box of DH muffin mix, or Kraft Mac & cheese, etc. Random regular branded items.

      • dillard_christina

I don't think my stores ever offered name-brand penny items. I always got Publix brand stuff, except on RARE occasion when they were out and it was Monday night and they allowed a name-brand sub (that happened once). All the other times, I remember Publix coffee, Publix sugar, Publix mac & cheese, Publix frz pizza, etc.

    • Lisa

You all are killing me. What are you going to complain about when Publix deletes the penny item all together. Just be grateful you are getting good deals. If you don't want the paper just don't buy it!!!!

    • melindaak

I agree that this is kind of a chintzy penny item, but other recent ones have been good, such as a bag of sugar for a penny. But in my area, Summerville SC, the penny coupon is now available in both the 75 cent Post and Courier and the delivered-free-to-your-home-on-Wed Summerville Journal Scene. I get the P&C anyway, but if one does not and lives in Summerville, the coupon is in the free paper! So in this area you don't even have to buy a paper to get the coupon. That's a deal.

One thing about the penny item: if it is not a food item, be careful if you use EBT (aka food stamps) to purchase your groceries. Since my husband lost his job in Oct and we became eligible for food stamps, I have found that if the penny item is a non-food item the computers at Publix take the penny item coupon amount (if the penny item is $1.99 usually, the coupon amount is $1.98) off my food stamp total and I still owe the full regular price of the penny item. But you can't do the penny item as a separate transaction, because you need $10.00 worth of purchases with it to get the penny item for a penny. Incidentally, the same thing happens if you purchase non-food items and have a coupon for the non-food item. For instance, I purchased food and a Scott tissue box when those were on sale for $1.00 and I had the Scott tissue coupon for $1.00. You would think that I would only own the sales tax on the tissue, but Publix's computers took the dollar off my food total, even though the coupon was for non-food, and I still owed the $1.00, plus sales tax!! I learned then to have them ring up my non-food items separately when I have coupons for those items.

I asked at the service counter and they gave me a coupon. Worth a try. My manager told me to do this as I was expressing my sadness about the change last week. Be sure to ask, it doesn't hurt!

      • Victoria

The Marietta, GA Publixes allow us to get a penny item coupon from the Customer Service desk, so I do not buy a mid week paper.

        • Michelle I

          Victoria, which Marietta Publix?

        • clayomayo

My Publix in Roswell GA (Market Place) gave me a coupon last week or the week before when I asked for one at the service desk.

          • ckfourth

I can't find a penny coupon in my Publix Ads on any day of the week!! I live in Alpharetta, GA. Anyone know where they are??

    • Anara

Doesn't seem really family friendly when a store changes the penny item day to Wednesdays in the bible belt. I guess if you work or have busy days then go to church on Wednesday night you're out of luck. Wish they had picked a different day!

    • Kristin

FYI: I went into Publix last week in Duncan, SC (corner of Reidville Rd. & Hwy 290) & they informed me that they no longer are accepting Target Coupons-they don't consider them a “competitor” any longer. :(

    • Kenziegirl

I am new to this couponing. I just went to Publix and used some printable coupons that said do not double and the cashier suppressed the double. I thought they were supposed to double no matter what the coupon said. The cashier was the assistant customer service rep. So I did not push the issue. Please advise. It was the Lexington store.

    • ywardlaw

My Publix store doesn't appear to follow the designated penny item. They had canned beans yesterday… (Forest Drive, Columbia)

    • lynn1insc

Lexington Publix has an issue with those… Go across the “pond” to the one on Hwy 6 where they do not have those issues… Remember any coupon that starts as a 5 if it doubles automatically Publix is supposed to let it go.. If it begins with a 9 it will not double no matter what.

      • dgram41

Which one “across the pond” — Murray Landing or Columbiana Station?

How can you whine about something that costs a penny?! Were you not planning to shop at Publix anyway or drive by on your way to somewhere else?
