SC Residents:  Sadly we have had a huge security breach in the SC Department of Revenue that has exposed 77% of residents information.  If you’ve paid taxes in South Carolina since 1998 you could be on the list of accounts breeched.

An overseas hacker gained access to social security numbers, credit, and debit card numbers of tax payers. You can call 1-866-578-5422  to see if you have been compromised and get an activation code for www.protectmyid.com/scdor.

If you have been affected you can receive FREE identity-theft protection and credit monitoring for 1 year.

You can go here to read more information on the beach and the measures currently been taken to handle the situation.

    • mrsmadayar

The hyperlinks don’t seem to be working for me. I’m in Alabama so thankfully I’m not affected but I still wanted to read about it.

    • Sally

This is TERRIBLE! What good would a year of identity protection do me, if they have my social security number? Couldn’t they just steal my identity a few years from now? Ugh! I keep trying the number and they have “higher than normal wait times ” and want me to call later. No duh. Everyone in SC is calling! Get more people to answer the phones!

Thanks for this info Jenny! I had no idea!

      • jessica

It alerts you if you’re information has been used somewhere out of state etc.

    • Aimee

They know who the people are, why can’t they send out letters instead of expecting us to figure it out!!!!!!

    • yimeius

that is awful…. if they have your social they have everything. ughhhh

    • Jean

Thanks for letting us know. Seems like they are keeping this quiet and not putting it on the news. The link isn’t working for me either. I get html code. Oh, that’s the lead story on the news at 11:00 tonight.

    • Desiree

Do we need to worry about our childrens #’s as well or just adults? We live in SC and have 2 toddlers, so we have to call the # 1st than go online, seems like they should just have it open so we an just go online and look and not be told to call back.

      • thesuperhubby

i tried to freeze my kids credit but that is not possible since they have no credit history. This came directly from trans, experian, and equifax. All my kids are minors. I tried to add them as authorized users on my credit card to create a credit history and then freeze it but I found out that adding them does not create a credit history for them. This came directly from my bank rep. I think they should make a way for us to freeze childrens credit but at this time I don’t think there is a way yet.

        • takinprecautions

You can freeze your child’s social security number even if no credit history, you just have to request the form from the credit agencies. The only problem I have with this is that they request copies of their social security card, birth certificate and all their personal info to go in the mail to them. I don’t trust that at all.

          • thesuperhubby

I have never heard of this before. Can you post a link to documentation for this. I am interested in learning more about this.

      • Deborah

I looked at my return, and it lists my child’s SSN, but not her name. I wonder if that makes it harder for someone to use?

    • Jenni P.

FYI – ANYone can contact Experian, TransUnion or Equifax and “freeze” their credit report. I did that today with mine, and plan to follow through for my husband and all of our children that were listed on our last tax return. Freezing it FREE in SC.

      • Jenni P.

Geez. Accidentally hit the down arrow, tried to fix it, and now… Sometimes (like today with this breach) I HATE technology.

    • libby

We spent all morning in the Social Secuirty office trying to figure out what happened to my husbands check this month….it is rerouted to another bank on Oct 10th and we had no idea until yesterday when his check was not deposited…we have been on the phones all day covering credit agencies to protect our credit…then we find out a little while ago EXACTLY what did happen….now…we will be reimbursed by Social Security…what upsets me is the fact that if the money is not recovered, then we the taxpayers have to pay t hat amount again….I am not a happy SC resident tonight…especially after investigators are saying the security system was not safely encrypted!!!

    • libby

As an addendum, SS office informed us we will need to call every month the day before the cutoff date to make sure the check is not being routed to another bank or somewhere else…also had to call credit bureaus and report fraud…..

    • charmjacket

we have been on the phones all day covering credit agencies to protect

Thank you for posting this. Have lived in Florida for the past 12 years, but lived in SC until I was 25 years old.

    • KEB2009

they can have mine! they won’t get far :)

      • mad

WHAT DO YOU MEAN? I THINK THIS IS SOMETHING SERIOUS }(

      • sirekri

Don’t underestimate bad people, they can mess-up your life so bad… and there is going to be nothing you can do about it!

      • Maria

its not just that they could steal the money you have, its that they can open accounts in your name, or your children’s name and borrow money in your name. In other words, you could wake upt to find you have 2 million dollars in overseas debt if you’re not paying attention. Its hard to undo, and scary stuff. Best to do what you can now to prevent it…

    • sirekri

5 years ago I had identity theft. Thanks to my credit card’s identity theft protection plan I found out right away. Everything was fine until last year when they tried again this time opening several accounts on my name. That forced me to freeze my credit files with all three bureaus and get LifeLock. They are monitoring everything and from experience I know they contact you of any activity within one hour to verify you triggered the changes. Don’t want to scare anybody but once your info is out you have to be on the look-out all your life. Also you can add your children’s info to your account to be monitored but you can’t freeze it. Hope that helps someone because the government doesn’t do pretty much anything about this but file a report. Good luck everyone.

      • Deborah

        Thanks for the info…

      • Karen

You can add children’s info on life lock? I thought it was a subscription for one person. Is freezing it not enough?

        • sirekri

They are giving you a choice to add your children as minors I think I paid $10 extra a year for them. They monitor their names, social numbers, addresses and don’t remember if there was something else.

    • Brookes

I assumed since our children aren’t taxpayers yet, it shouldn’t make a difference…at least I hope! BTW, the activation code is SCDOR123.

    • JSSMommy

What does it mean to “freeze” your credit report? What are the benefits? Thank you!

      • takinprecautions

Contact each of the 3 credit reporting agencies – this can be done on line and request a credit freeze. This means that if anyone tries to open credit with your ssn – it will be blocked. you must plan ahead if you plan to open any line of credits however, because if you are in a store and quick fill an application to get 10% off it will not be allowed to go through. It is easy to unblock on the computer for a certain amount of time or permanently if you choose. We have done this for over 5 years now.

    • yazpistachio

Wow! we are almost ready to buy a house, and had seriously considered looking just across the boarder in SC. I’m glad we didn’t if this is how they treat their residents. . .

      • takinprecautions

The state of SC didn’t do this to their residents, an overseas hacker did.

    • tess

My parents, in-laws and our college kids live with us. That’s 9 people. The website wouldn’t let me enter all 9 at once. I had to shut off the computer 8 times to enter 9 people’s data. That’s outrageous!!!!!!

    • Diane

I’ve logged in to the website and was given access to my credit report. Does this mean I’ve been affected? The website says it is a 30 day free trial, but SC says it’s available for a year. Does everyone impacted start out with a 30 day trial?

    • Brooke S.

I signed up and tried to do it again with my husbands ss. It won’t let me continue with his info because it says I’m already enjoying the benefits. Any ideas how to get around this? Also, is there more info out there with what we should do? i’ve tried to search on the internet, and sadly, this site is the only one I’ve found with “what to do”. If not for SS, I wouldn’t even know where to start!

      • Victoria Kershner

You have to log out of your account. I was able to create two accounts with the same email address.

    • libby

Due to the easy enrollment for direct deposit for social security checks at banks, we were told by the Social Security Admin that you can use your name and ID and take anyones social security number and have their check deposited to your account… and it is happening…we need to call our Senators and Congressmen and ask them to fix this and also to make sure that our state improves on the level of encrypted security for all of our sakes…..in this day and time, all of us have to be proactive in protecting our private information and this includes the government which requires this information…..

If you go to this link and go to STEP 3 the activation code for a full year for every SC resident is SCDOR123. I hope this is helpful. I took care of mine this morning with no problem. http://www.sctax.org/security.htm

    • singit

I called the number, got a recording and the activation code without talking to anyone. However, when I got to the web site it only told you what to do and not how to enter the code. The instructions say to go to the site and enter the code but there is no place to enter the code. I clicked on the link that tells you what to do and it sent me back to the site to enter the code, which you can’t do. It’s just a vicious circle that leads to nowhere!! Even though I called during business hours today I still only got a recording. Previously, last night, the recording told me Sat. hours would be 8:00am to 5:00pm. The efficiency of the State!!

    • jacketfan24

My SSN was used to file a fraudulent federal tax return earlier this year, so fortunately I had already been through all this with that event. My credit still has a block on it, but you can get credit anyway if you need to with it there. It’s just to alert creditors to be very careful when issuing credit and to verify your identity.
I have to admit that the federal government wasn’t much better than state at handling this issue…the person was able to receive a rapid refund even after I called the IRS and reported a potential problem. Fortunately, they never tried to do anything else with it.

    • How terrible for everyone affected! It does make you want to get something like life lock just because, even if you weren’t affected doesn’t it?! I’m so sorry you all have to go through this worry and hassle :(

    • Sandy Morrison

The site address is http://www.protectmyid.com/scdor and the activation code is SCDOR123………..then you have to supply the information, you get one year free service, they do not ask for a credit card.

    • Amy

Just wanted to add that you may want to place a security freeze with chexsystems as well. This may help deter a criminal from opening a bank account in your name. I couldn’t find a way to set up a security freeze with Telecheck — if anyone has that info, I’d appreciate it. Unfortunately, it seems there are a lot of online banks that open accounts without any type of credit check or chexsystems check, etc. It is really too easy for criminals to use your information fraudulently.
