Pharmacist

I know I’m not a big advocate of house brands, but when it comes to health products this is one area that can really save you a ton.

We recently tried out the Walgreens version of Zyrtec (call Wal-Zyr) and the name brand version.  I couldn’t find any difference in how the medications worked, but found a huge difference in price.

Right now Walgreens has the national brand and their brand on sale, but even with a sale the national brand can’t compete.  You pay 52¢ a pill for a name brand (on sale), or 18¢ a pill for the Walgreens brand!!

If you take this every day like we do, that’s a yearly saving of $12 1 to use the Walgreens brand!

If you are unsure about stepping away from name brands on pharmaceuticals, realize that most Walgreens Brand Health & Wellness Products contain the exact same active ingredients, and they come with a 100% money back guarantee.  So you don’t have to sacrifice quality or trust to save money!

One more thing you may not know, with every purchase of Walgreens Brand Health & Wellness products, you are helping to bring preventive wellness services to local communities through the Walgreens Way to Well Fund™.

The Prize:

Walgreens is giving away $50 in Walgreens gift cards to one Southern Savers reader!

Even with sales and high dollar Qs I couldn't find Zyrtec cheaper than the Generic!

For the four packages of non-drowsey I bought of their store brand, I saved over $12. No one in our group was sick at all. Likely worked as well as the prescription patches…..

    • Couponmomjenn

my family tried wal-zyr too.  it as worked exactly the same as name brand products we've tried, except i got it for only $5!!! WOW!!!! i went in with a coupon to get zyrtec and couldnt beat the walgreen's brand price, so i “chanced” it.  im so glad i did because the wal-zyr has even helped clear up my son's severe egzema (yes, its true, beta blockers in allergy medicine help his skin to not be so sensitive to EVERYTHING.)

    • Tricia

Any of the cough and cold meds. My husband is a pharmacologist/toxicologist, and he always checks % of active ingredients. If that's the same, the product works the same. What you're paying for with the name brand is advertising.

    • Suzzie1161

I use the Walgreen brand of aspirin.  It cost about 25% of the name brand and I can't tell the difference.  I don't intend to switch back.

    • Angelique

I like Icy Hot spray, but it is expensive. I tried the Walgreens brand and it works exactly the same, because it has the exact same 16% menthol active ingredient. This is not true of the competition. I tried CVS's Icy Hot spray equivalent and was disappointed. I later discovered its menthol content is only 8% (and I was paying the same as I did for Wags' 16%!). I love the Wags Icy Hot spray equivalent.

    • Christine

      We love the Wal-Zyr too.

    • Krisy Lutz

WAL-FEX ALLERGY is my favorite : ) My Dr. Recommend I take an Allegra everyday, which is very expensive since insurance won't cover allergy meds. I tried Wal-Fex and was hooked!! It works exactly the same at less than half the price! : )
Thanks Walgreens for a Great product!!!

    • Wal-Hist because it works great for my allergies.

    • Julia

    • Mcleodsc

I always buy the Walgreens brands unless they have a really good register reward deal going on the name brand. I have never noticed any differences in the way the store brand worked versus the name brand. My favorite product is Walgreens childrens allergy medicene that is like the name brand Benadryl. We use alot of it and can save alot of money by buying Walgreen's brand. You can always compare the ingredients of the store brand with the name brand and they are almost always exactly the same.

Tonight at Walgreens I needed to buy baby powder.  Even with a coupon, the giant 22oz Walgreens brand of baby powder was $3.00 cheaper than Johnsons and Johnsons!  I was amazed at the value!!!

    • Jennifer Turner2008

I really like the Wal-Sporin (it is Walgreen's version of Polysporin, only much cheaper!)

    • Rkrem

My 2 favorite Walgreen's products are their saline nasal spray and their ibuprofen. These are staples in our home and are much better prices than the name brands.

    • Mandy

      The Walgreen's Children's Ibuprofen!

    • cassia2

Probably vitamins, especially prenatals and children's vitamins.  The brand name ones are so expensive!

    • Renee

My answer may be unusual, but I bought a walgreens brand blood pressure cuff and it works just as well as my parents namebrand. It was less expensive and at the time of purchase came with a rebate.  I regularly check the Walgreen brand on most health items before purchasing and use them if the price is right and have never noticed a difference.

    • Fosterk25

the walgreens brand of pain relievers is great!  I only buy store brand in these bc they work the same!

    • Aline

My favorite is probably walgreens ibuprofen, but we use many of their brands and like them all.

    • Denielle C Podraza

Its hard to choose….I buy almost everything Walgreens brand…..I think the multi system cold medicine(day and night) is probably my favorite though!

    • owenheartscoupons

My family uses the Walgreens Hand Sanitizer on a daily basis and very often use Walgreens Pain Reliever Acetaminophen (Compare to Tylenol) Those are our 2 favorite Walgreens brand products! I agree Walgreens products work great!! :)

    • Carolyon1

I use the Walgreens brand equivalent of Benadryl, and I can't tell the difference.

    • emily rose

My family loves the Walgreens brand baby wipes.  We buy them over all the national brands!  Our family out grew diapers well over a year and a half ago, but I am still carrying around a small container of Walgreens brand wipes.  We use them for spills, runny noses, dirty hands, and all those other oopsies that take place in the course of oh…5 minutes!  I hope before my kids go to college I am able to purchase wipes less frequently but I'm not positive that will ever happen!

    • I recently tore my Plantar Plate (the little ligaments where your toes meet your foot) and for the next couple weeks I have to tape my second toe to the bottom of my foot so I won't damage it further.  Walgreens has been a wonderful help for me – I bought some Walgreens Brand medical tape but it was too narrow and hurt my toe, and they accepted my (used) return just fine so I could exchange it for a wider version!  Their products and their customer service is spot-on!  Thanks Walgreens! *and YOU, Souther Savers!*

    • Samanthadare

I use Walgreens' version of Tylenol and not only does it work great, but it is MUCH cheaper!  I love their store brand prices!!

    • Eye Itch Relief in the yellowy-orange box. It worked for me!

    • Christi

I use the Walgreens saline nasal spray.  It isn't any different than AYR, except price.  We all know brands can be cheaper when combining sales and coupons, but not on saline.  Walgreens even puts it on sale twice a year making it dirt cheap so I can stockpile for the next allergy season.

    • Duffyschniepp

I really love the walgreens diapers and I can always find great deals on them too!

    • Katie Mc.

the ibuprophen works great… between all my headaches & misc aches & pains, I use loads of it!

    • I like using their economy size ibuprophen.

I love walgreens brand products! I literally live about a block away from a store that is open 24 hours. I use their ibuprofen, and walgreens brand zyrtec throughout allergy season, which lately seems like everyday! I really like their soaps that are meant to smell like soft-soap. They smell so good and cost way less.

    • Debrahow

I love Walgreens brand of Robitussin – we use it all of the time, especially the Allergy version.  You're right, their brand of Health/Wellness products are no different from the National Name Brand and the price difference is amazing!  (I don't tweet, sorry!)

    • CrisW

Sorry I do not tweet. However, you're correct, their brand of products are no different from the name brands. Also, the price difference is amazing! I am new at couponing.. so that means I have always went with the walgreens products. (My picture should be in the dictionary, besided broke!)  From cold medication to band aids.. It stays on the box WalGreens here at my house. Why pay more for the exact same thing, with only different names?

    • Kmleopold

    • Delores

We always buy, unless they are out of stock, the Walgreen's brand of children's ibuprofen.

    • Tiredmama

Just switched from Allegra to the Walgreen's brand of the same medication.  Bought 45 day supply bottle for $18 and got 2nd bottle 1/2 off.  So, basically got 3 month supply for less than $30!

    • CatalinaKarana

I love the Walgreens version of ibuprofen. I lived on it when I was sick and pregnant (aka the last 2 years running!).

    • Brian

Haven't tried anyWalgreens products. This would be a good chance to start.

    • Michelle

The Walgreens sinus pills work great.

    • Amanda Myers

I have always used the Walgreens brand of prenatal vitamins with DHA.  They are much less expensive than the brand names and I love that there's a separate DHA pill.  It's about $25 or so for a 60 day supply.   The brand “Prenate” that my doc wrote me a prescription for, is like $130 for only 30 days!  So far….my first child is super duper healthy :) and my second is on the way!

    • Enggrenj

I have used Walgreens brand tylenol, adult and children and it worked great and was way cheeper

    • Nwoleslagle

I haven't tried Walgreens, but would try their allergy meds.

    • Pam Jones

I'm with you on the Zyrtec.  Their store brand is the cheapest I've found.  So when I can't stack coupons & get Zyrtec cheaper somewhere I always buy it from Walgreens!

    • Joy Cranfill

Just recently had a bad summer cold and used Wal-Flu (Thera-Flu) instead of the name brand and found it worked like a charm.  Loved that the night time version helped calm my cough down so I could get to sleep.  I'm a big fan of Walgreens brand health and wellness products.

    • Nichss

    • JulieB

I struggle with daily allergies and was pleasantly surprised to find that Walgreen's brand of Allegra, called Wal-fex Allergy, works wonders for me.  Because it keeps my allergies in check, I find that I actually have more energy and clarity to take on my day.  Plus, I don't feel groggy or jittery when I take it which is often a problem for me due to my sensitivity to medication.  Thank you, Walgreen's!  This one's a winner for me!

    • MargaretN

We too have bought the Walgreens Zyrtec.  Only once have we beat the house brand price with name brand coupons and boy did we stock up on the name brand Zyrtec when we did.  This would be great for additional stock of other high priced OTC meds.  Thanks

    • Jamie B.

I like the Walgreens brand grape flavored infant suspension drops…my 14 month old loves it and it seems to be very effective when she runs a fever.

    • robby

I don't notice any difference between Wal-dryl and Benadryl

    • amyt

    • augustgirl01

We use Children's Wal-Zyr for my 3-year-old's allergies. He takes it every day for 6 months during spring & summer, so it saves us some money! Plus, we started using it last year during the Children's Zyrtec recall – so in this case, it was even safer to use than the name brand!

    • Cindyblye

Love all the Walgreens Cold adn Sinus products!  Think we have tried them all and never been disappointed.

    • Cherry

Wal-itin vs. Claratin – absolutely NO DIFFERENCE, except in the price. Claratin was prescribed by a doctor until it became available OTC.

Same with Prilosec, doctor prescribed at $8 per month, then became OTC and Prilosec for a 30 day dosage is about .80 per pill. Walgreen's version is half that much.

    • Stephthomspon

I always buy the walgreens tampons when they are b1g1free.  I can't tell the difference.

    • Snjohnson48

I also take the Walgreen brand (Wal-zyr) over Zyrtec.  Last year I wasn't informed about the coupon savings everyone was doing so I naturally bought the off brand – since then I have purchased Zyrtec once when it was cheaper than Wal-zyr.  I take it everyday and it has the same effectiveness as the brand name products.

    • Walephed-cheaper and as good as the suda version.

    • I have a bulging disc at the L5 – S1 area in my lower back which causes

immense relief to even the most intolerable days. I have highly recommended this
product to my friends. One added extra is the menthol and camphor helps to
relieve my sinus problems at the same time!

    • Kevandem

I think you'll find the best deal on Zyrtec to be Sam's Club.  300 pills (I think) for roughly $15.  That's much cheaper than anything else I've seen, including Amazon. If you don't have a Sam's card, you can find a one-day pass online and then use it, if you don't mind paying a 10% upcharge. $1.50 is no big deal when you're saving that much.

    • Kevandem

By the way, that's the Sam's version of Zyrtec.

    • Sandra

      We use the Walgreen's Ibuprofen.

We use Walgreen's brand of just about EVERYTHING, from the kids diapers to apple juice! However, my favorite of Health & Wellness product (assuming apple juice doesn't count, lol) is the Advanced Formula A thru Z Probiotic Multivitamin. It really does have everything you need – A to Z, AND the probiotics not only help with absorption, but helps support a healthy intestinal tract…so if I forget my yogurt that day…all is still well!

I think that Walgreens Health and Wellness products are a great value for people that need to save money, but need to also be sure they are getting good medicine.  I happened to be in the store today, so I did a quick price comparison so I could share what kind of savings you could typically expect. A 4 oz. Robitussin bottle was $6.49 and the same size Wal-Tussin was $4.59. An 8 oz. bottle of Robitussin was $8.49 and the same size Wal-Tussin was $5.99. I always check items in different sizes, because as you can see here, you can get twice as much medicine for only $1.40 more! Not ba!!!!!!!! And, you’re saving money with either size. Plus, all of Walgreens' FAB products have worked for me just as well as what my Mom used to give me.
