I have lived in the south my entire life, visited most every state down here, but I’ve never made it to Mississippi.  Next week that all changes,  I have two workshops scheduled in Jackson and Tupelo!

Normally I never really mention upcoming classes blog posts, but these guys are different.  I just mapped it and turns out Mississippi is 10 hours from my house.  This gets me thinking… the odds of me putting my kids in the car and doing this trip again in the future are looking pretty slim.   Not saying I won’t, just saying if you want to come to a workshop and live in one of these cities, it’s time to seize the moment!

Want Another Reason to Join Us??

For either class (Jackson or Tupelo) if you bring a packed Operation Christmas Child box you’ll get in FREE.   If you don’t bring a box that’s okay it’s still the normal $10, but all proceeds from both classes will go towards Operation Christmas Child to help ship boxes over seas!  (You still need to register either way)

I hope you can make it out!

Got any fun ideas of things to do with kids in Mississippi?

Free things to do in Tupelo!

    • amelia

hooray! so glad you'll be coming to the magnolia state!

    • atlmomguide

I have TONS of things to do in Jackson! You can e-mail me at atlmomguide at gmail dot com but here are a few:
My favorite is the Farm Museum AKA agricultural museum. It is an entire town the kids can play in plus they have an indoor museum with tons of airplanes and cars and a new train exhibit…oh and you can't forget the largest rocking chair!

the museum of natural science is pretty cool and last time I was there in the spring they were building a new children s museum…not sure if it is open yet but it is in the same park at the natural science museum.

well those are the first things coming to mind but let me know if you need any more ideas!

      • Luci

Children's Museum won't be open until December.

    • Couponpatsy

My hubby is from the Mississippi coast and when I read the title that's where I was hoping you were going so all my inlaws could come to the workshop since they are in awe of my couponing!

      • Faith

I agree. I wish she was going to Biloxi/Gulfport area. My mom and her teacher friends could use the class and I have a ton of family down there that could use her class.

    • amelia

oh, gosh, i wasn't paying attention to the request for things to do! :) i ditto the suggestion for the ag museum. my daughter (4) really likes the museum of natural science and the zoo. (fair warning: if you've been to bigger zoos, your kids will probably not be impressed.) sadly, i am pretty sure the children's museum is not open yet.

in tupelo, the bankcorp south arena will have public ice skating nov. 13 starting at 2 p.m.

i've lived in mississippi my whole life, and i still think the best things to do with kids are just hanging out outside, especially now that it's cooler…but the things i mentioned would be fun, too! ;)

    • 2blessed98

I live in in Jackson and I agree on the Ag Museum idea- I always loved going as a kid. Also, I'm not sure what it is called but Tupelo has a buffalo farm/exotic animal zoo that people take their kids to visit. Of course there is always the birthplace of Elvis you can check out in Tupelo as well :)

    • Clairestrebeck

nevermind, i kept trying and it worked! :)

    • Jbolen

I am so excited you are coming to Tupelo. Cannot wait till next Saturday for the workshop. Yea!!!

    • ChrissyPunkin

Jenny, I thought you were coming to Montgomery. I'm sure I saw it on the workshop schedule a while back because I put it on my calendar. Did you just change your plans? Will you be in Montgomery eventually? Thanks!

      • MaryJ

I would love for there to be a workshop in Montgomery too. Or even Birmingham.

    • Becky

I grew up in Tupelo, but I currently live in Tennessee. The downtown area has recently been revitalized. I recommend eating lunch at Cafe 212 (212 Main Street). It is a locally owned business with a fun environment. The Elvis birthplace and museum is something fun to run through…it won't take very long, the museum is small and the house he was born in is only 2 rooms. Hope you enjoy the trip! :)

    • Amy

I am from Greenville, MS, right along the MS river. Since you're going to Jackson, you won't be too far from Vicksburg, where you can find a spot on the levee to stand and awe over the Mississippi River. It never ceases to totally amaze me. I agree with the woman who said she likes to spend lots of time outside. When we go home to visit my parents, my kids love to go fishing and for hikes in the woods. Last year they found a ditch and a beaver dam near my parent's yard and spent hours constructing their own dam out of sticks. Now I am getting homesick! Have fun! :)

    • guest

The Tupelo Automobile Museum is really cool. Lots of antique and rare cars.

    • MaryJ

I hope you absolutely love Mississippi. I went to school at MS State for a year working on my Masters. I decided not to continue after the one year, but it was such a touch decision because I loved Starkville and all the people there.

If you happen to be going through Starkville (don't think you would, but if) there is a wildlife refuge out there. Also, definitely get some sort of BBQ while in the state. Yummy!

    • Melissa

I think you need to come to Knoxville, TN for a seminar!

      • We are headed there in January!

        • Melissa

Can you tell me where and the date so I can put it on my calendar? I didn't see on the workshop calendar yet. Thanks!

          • Amy B.

Looks like Jan 13 and 15 on the workshop calendar to the right —>

            • Melissa

Awwwww…………thanks. I'm such a dork. I totally missed how to do that. Thanks again.

    • Ab

Jenny, that is so great that you are using the workshop to donate more to OCC! I hope you have a WONDERFUL turnout! :)

    • Luci

LeFleur State Park in Jackson, where the Natural Science Museum is, also has a large outdoor playground and picnic area. Our kid loves the large fort, swings, etc. The Mississippi Children's Museum isn't open yet because it's still under construction.

In Pearl, near the workshop is a public playground just off Hwy 80. Further down 80 toward Brandon is Miskelly furniture, $1 per kid on the merry-go-round. Go north at that intersection toward the airport will take you into Flowood (mind the round about by going left instead of into the airport entrance, then right to go north). Go all the way down to Lakeland Dr. Going east or right at Mugshots will take you right towards most shopping. Chick-fil-A is undergoing renovations and might not be reopened by next week. Back Yard Burger across the street has an indoor playground. These are at Old Fannin Rd intersection. There's more I could mention since we relocated to this area.

    • Michelle

So glad you are coming to Mississippi. The prices here at Kroger are much higher than what you'll in other southeast states. We need all the help we can get!

    • Lauraletz

thanks so much for your giving heart! wow! youre generosity will reap eternal rewards with the children who will now learn about Jesus b/c of your support of operation Christmas child. thanks again!

    • Herndonfam

I live in Jackson! Yippeee! So glad you decided to post because I had stopped looking at the workshop dates when it seemed I was too far away! Will be spreading the word!!!! See you soon!

    • Kmd20ts

Loving you commitment to you charity of choice!! I'll be doing a box this year!

    • Emily

Jenny, I really think you are great. It is so nice to hear of you giving back in so many ways and encouraging others to do the same. You are an inspiration! You could easily keep everything you have to yourself but you don't, and I like that.

    • Luci

Parents and Kids magazine is a good source of info for the Jackson metro area.
      http://www.parents-kids.com/

Ag Museum is scheduled to have the Annual Harvest Festival Nov. 10-13.

    • Chelmert0927

In Jackson, the Museum of Natural Science is great fun (Megalodon exhibit right now), and they also have a very nice playground/picnic area. The Sports Hall of Fame and the Agriculture Museum are next door to each other (and sort of across the street from the Science museum). In Tupelo, you should take the kids to the Buffalo Park. If the weather is bad in Tupelo, go to the Auto Museum. It's overpriced but something fun to do if it's raining.

      • Dtoxceo

Yeah, my kids and their cousins never miss the Musuem when we meet at my moms – the Meg exhibit was a big hit, along with checking out the 2-headed snake and counting how many new gators there were! We always take a picnic and spend awhile playing in Riverside Park once they feel like they've seen enough.

    • Melissa Forward

The drive is hard, just did it last weekend. 9 1/2 hours from Columbia to Gulfport. But always worth it! Enjoy you time in MS, it is full of adventures!

    • Savings Viking

Hope you can make it to Biloxi sometime! I would love to go to one of your workshops. Maybe you could figure out a way to save in an area that absolutely hates clearance items and isn't particularly coupon friendly (and has a surprising lack of grocery store choices).

      • Luci

My friend in Gulfport finds wonderful savings down there at D'Iberville Target and by combing the deals at the outlet mall in Gulfport near Home Depot. Granted like anywhere else, it's a hunt, but the deals are there.

    • Juliethorderson

Jenny, you are in luck. Tupelo is celebrating Week of the Family Nov. 8-14. There will be lots of free activities throughout the week. You can check out details at http://www.tupelo.weekofthefamily.org. During the coupon class their will be free fun at Healthworks. A great place for the kids! Their website is nmiss.healthworkskids.org. There are lots of things going on that week so go to tupelo.net and see what our great little city has to offer. Tupelo is awesome! Can’t wait to attend your class. Don’t hesitate to email me with any questions.

    • Cwalkermarie

me and my friends are registered!!!!!!!!

    • Charity

Any plans to come to VA?

    • Lane

Welcome to Tupelo, Mississippi! I grew up near there. Elvis's birthplace is in Tupelo, and while there's a house you can visit, there's not much to see. Your girls would have fun going to Ballard Park. Take a couple of loaves of bread & feed the ducks. (There are lots of ducks, geese, and fish, and they are well accustomed to being fed by park visitors.) Ballard Park is free. There is a small zoo called the Tupelo Buffalo Park that has some interesting things – there is an admission charge, but you'll have a good time there. They have a petting zoo and they will take you on a tour of the buffalo pastures and even feed them while you watch – you get really close to lots of big animals (buffalo, llamas, camels, even giraffes) you don't see every day.

I would love to go to your workshop – I'm sure you'll have a gret turnout!

    • Mary Ellen

Ok, so I live in NC and go to Louisiana to see my Dad, I think Jackson is the border town but if not, It isn't far, There is a welcome center at the Mississippi River that is free. It is a great place for pictures and the kids can say they have seen the mighty Mississippi. It makes a difference because of it's size. I really think if you are that close it is a must see. I used it as a history lesson. The stories about people actually crossing it are amazing to me. I am always looking for learning opportunities. Great places to take pictures.

    • DonnaTN

I just wanted to comment on the 10 hour drive part… Jenny…I am in the bottom of TN and drive all the way to the corner of PA closer to NY border. That's a 10 1/2 – 11 hour drive (maybe 12 sometimes if the kids don't cooperate!!). I do this 2 times a year with my husband and kids, 6,4,& 1. It seems crazy to drive this long especially with kids but it's not as bad if you have a plan. How long to get out and stretch and eat.. Do potty times only on the stops, try not to have the kids drink as much on the ride. I use to have my little girl wear a pull up on the ride just in case. Pack lots of snacks and everyone has their own activity bag!! I have the dual tv monitors and those are such a blessing when we are travelling!! It keeps the antsy baby of mine content!! And my husband and I take turns driving so it helps. Good luck if you decide to drive!! :)

    • Labillingsley3

Healthworks is a must do for your children in Tupelo. It is very fun and interactive! So glad you are coming to Tupelo.

    • Jackee Simmons

      Dear Jenny:

A friend of mine introduced me to your website and to couponing awhile back. What a blessing it has been to save money for me and my family! In addition, I have been able to pass along information about couponing to others. Recently, I was able to take four bags of personal care items and such to a single mother who was struggling. She was amazed at what I had been able to purchase for little or nothing and is now couponing herself! It is such a blessing to be able to help people that are struggling in this economy and to show them how they can take care of themselves and their families on their own! Your ministry has had a huge impact on my life and on the lives of many others. I hope this comment is being left in a place that you will see it, because I surely want to thank you for sharing your experience. I visit other sites, but yours is the most informative. It is amazing how much information you are able to compile, and I want to thank you for your extensive efforts.

      Sincerely,

      Jackee Simmons – Aiken SC

    • Djtackett

I live at the top of Mississippi (Southaven), and not sure I can make it to Tupelo next weekend. Will you ever make it to the top of MS or Memphis, TN?

    • Amy

Registered! Can't wait…been couponing with you since the first part of 2010 and have wanted you to come to Mississippi so badly! Thanks to you, I've gone from a $600-$800/month grocery bill to $300 or less for a family of 6…I can never go back the old way of shopping! Just so you know (in case you didn't), our Krogers are in the Memphis region…most of our Kroger sales around here run Wednesday to Tuesday. The great thing about this is I get a sneak peek on your site of what's coming up the following Wednesday…can get my plan together well in advance of the sale…very few differences in what's on sale, but there are regional differences. Thanks for all you do…blessings to you!

    • I second anyone who mentioned the Buffalo Park in Tupelo! It's a family favorite of ours!!!

    • Luci

Thanks for tonight's workshop in Pearl.

I couldn't clearly hear the lady upfront but I think she said she lives in Newton, which is near Meridian on I-20 by near the Alabama border. There's no Kroger in that area, but there are two Winn Dixies, a Piggly Wiggly in Meridian and one in Collinsville, one CVS, one Rite Aid, two Walgreens, two Super Walmarts and a Sam's Club. Much of this is located along or near North Hills between Hwys 19 and 39. I forgot to ask you at the time whether your website mentions any of these. I do see that you have a Winn Dixie link under the Other tab at the top of your website. Hope this helps anyone who came from that area.
