Just discovered your blog. Good stuff, but FYI: The commissary couponing policy if that “Commissaries CANNOT accept “in-house” coupons issued by commercial grocery stores or supermarkets.” So, you can’t use Target, Publix, Walgreens, or any other store coupon, so far as I know. Just don’t want anyone to go in and be surprised that they can’t save :)

More the commissary couponing policy on their site here: http://www.commissaries.com/documents/contact_deca/faqs/coupon_use.cfm

is the % off before coupons or after?

      • mj

it's the % off retail price before coupons

    • misskris

I love that you have the commissary listed as one of your stores now, but as a heads up my store, parris island, no longer allows stacking of a store and manuf. coupon. the savings are better going to bi-lo or publix. hth some of these fellow couponers

      • Interstatej18

I live in Bft and was told that Publix does not double coupons and have found that when its on sale at Publix, its the same price or cheaper at the comm. The only advantage at Publix is stacking the manuf and store coupon. I wasn't aware that the comm ever did that. Would love to know how u save more at Publix because I can't do it on food? :) I guess im too picky! Thanks

        • misskris

I have a husband and son who eat there share of junk food, but I tend to keep it more to the nuts, trail mix or whole grain/baked chips that go on sale. Also most condiments or dressings, even premixed salads can be found on sale every few weeks at publix and that is when I can get the most for my money by stacking coupons. Also Publix and BiLo do great sales on paper goods and cleaning supplies that the commissary just can't hold a candle to. Lastly Publix will take one competitor coupoon per transaction, so any of $/$$ from rite aid, cvs, walgreen work wonders at lowering my overall cost. HTH.

      • shellito1012

That will only work if your SSN is part of the military system….either active duty or retired, etc. I don't think just anyone can go in and get pricing.

    • Hickerdoodle

I was told that you can go to commissary.com and log in -need SSN. you can get the prices that way.

    • Dale

Even knowing the prices of these sales items, it doesn't appear to beat shopping sales and couponing on the outside. I am assuming the commissary does not double coupons, and their prices are rarely better than a good sale at Publix, Bi-Lo or Kroger. I would be interested to hear from anyone who finds great savings at their commissary. And most of all, how do they do it?

      • Peg938

Dale, I shop at the commissary about once a month. There are certain items that I can really save money on there, but many others that I do better buying at Publix or Kroger. The meat is the best deal at a commissary, so I buy enough for the month, repackage into freezer bags, and put in my deep freeze. If you have commissary privileges, be sure to watch for their case lot sales. You can save a huge amount on detergents, paper goods, meat, canned veggies, etc! And take your coupons because they accept them at case lot sales also.

        • guest

My plan is similar to Peg938. Commissary meat is high-quality and always “sale” price (comparatively to other stores). I stock up on basic items, and then shop at other stores for the deals. Also, we recently moved to an area where there just aren't any stores that double coupons, so the commissary is a deal when it's all you have!

      • Jdrev02

I find some good sales at my commissary usually everytime I go!! I mean milk alone is atleast $1 or more cheaper per gal!! Also I find that using the coupons that are a higher value or more work best there since they would not double or triple somewhere else!! My commissary has a really good razor deal the shick hydro 3 and hydro 5 razors are both priced around $4 dollars and there is a $5/1 coupon floating around out there!! That is how I make the most of my shopping experience. Also I havent come across any frozen vegetable coupons in a while and they always have a great price on those!! Just a few examples how that helps!!!

      • shellito1012

I would agree for the most part…..when Publix has a B1G1, they rarely beat a commissary price. But as others stated, there are some things that we only get at the commissary (meet and seasonings come to mind first). Each week, I do the sales/coupon shopping at Publix and then we get the remaining things at the commissary (well, my husband does). This seems to be working out really well for us!

    • Wendy

I always save by going to the commissary. Previously my grocery bill was $200+ a week!! I have not spent over $150 a week since shopping my commissary – without coupons! So it is well worth it for me. Plus our sales tax here is very high (even on food) so we are able to get a break that way as well. Our milk here is approx $4 a gallon and I can get it at the commissary for about 1/2 the price. I would suggest you try it for a month and see if you save.

    • momof3

I too used to think that I could never get as good a deal at a grocery store as I could at the commissary. I have been proven wrong on many items. A good sale and coupons make all the difference on some purchases when shopping at grocery stores. I also agree that the meat prices just can't be beat and the quality is excellent at the commissary. Case lot sales are great especially with coupons. The best of both worlds!

    • Email_laurentorres

I don't know how civilian families do their entire shopping outside of the commissaries. I agree with the person who made the comment that the sales are generally the same than at an outside store and they don't offer rewards or double coupons (ever!) but from my personal experience, the commissary was one of the only shopping options we had in a military community being so far from the bigger grocery stores that did offer great sales. In general, there are tremendous saving for my family. Getting to know that other brands that i am generally used to, still get the job done and that's how I save at the commissary.

    • Sibylle82

I find awesome deals at the commissary all the time. Today I just picked up two boxes of cereal for 50 cents each, they even provided the coupon for me. I've picked up numerous items for 50 cents or less when combined with a coupon. I think it's awesome that Jenny does this list for us, thanks!
