can you use any store coupon at the commissary?

      • Jamie

My commissary only takes manufacturer and military manufacturer coupons.

      • Bradyfigueroa

If it is a manufacturer but says something lik retailer or redeem only at Publix, my commissary at Redstone WILL NOT accept it….even if it is truly just a manufacturer coupon.

    • ashley

question: is it true that you can use expired coupons at commisaries in the US? i read somewhere that i can send my expired coupons to bases overseas and they can use them for up to 6 months past the expiration date. if it's true i have a ton of coupons that have expired in the last two months that are up for grabs!

      • Sara Ortiz329

My sister-in-law was in Okinawa and she said they were able to use expired coupons up to 6 months.

      • Dalaforte

my understanding is that you can only use the expired coupons overseas

        • darbe

Sorry, I forgot to add that if you mail the expired coupons to your local base they can send them overseas!

        • Klynn2001

And OCONUS locals like Alaska and Hawaii do not use expired coupons, either. You actually have to be out of the country.

    • Klynn2001

I'm in Hawaii and my commissary is not on the list when you log in to look at prices. Anyone know where I could find that info?

PS. This was my go-to site for my couponing habit until I moved to Hawaii. Everything is so different here its hard to get into it again!

    • Rhonda

Do you have to be a member of the military to shop at a commissary?

      • Bradyfigueroa

There are some other government employees, I believe, that can shop at commissary depending on location. Or you can be retired military….

      • Lovelola007

yes or a family member with a military ID. Unless you have a friend or something that will bring you on base but they have to be the person who pays for the groceries.

      • Bncnter

Someone suggested you could shop with someone who has commissary privileges & let them pay for it. Watch out for this. This is called black marketing, & the one with the commissary privileges will loose their privileges if caught.

    • SamsMommy

FYI- the commissary at Charleston AFB will not accept my printed coupons that do NOT have a second rectangular barcode on the top right hand corner. Frustrating….

    • Tara

Here’s a site with info about where to send expired coupons overseas. http://www.grocerysavingtips.com/expiredgrocerycoupons.htm

I just did it for the first time and the postage price seems like it is the same as a domestic shipment. The post office even gives out free “priority mail” shipping boxes that have a set price to shop once it is full. I took it home and how have that box on my coupon table so that I can put expired mfr coupons in there as I go.

this site was so helpful! thank you so much!!

      • Julie

Thank you for this. I just realized I should be saving them and sending them overseas not recycling/tossing them. I will look at this site and recc. to others.

    • Angie Walker

Looking for a coupon buddy to mail my expired coupons to anyone interested?

    • Bncnter

Watch out for the suggestion of paying for groceries for others at a commissary if they don't have commissary privileges. This is called “black marketing”, & if you are found out, you can loose your commissary privileges.

    • Wendy Moore

I usually don't shop at our local commissary, but have a question to all those that do and are experienced couponers. Is it worth it to get stuff at the commissary vs. the sales at Kroger or other grocery chains? I usually haven't seen many good “sales” at our commissary although I know the prices are supposed to be lower…how does that compare to other chains? Any advice?

      • Jamie

It varies. Sometimes, the mega sales and BOGO sales can beat out the price per item over the commissary sale price. It's best to keep an eye on the sales and just comparison shop from time to time. I buy a lot of my staple items that rarely go on sale other places (flour, sugar, etc.) from the commissary along with a lot of meats. Their meat prices are usually the best in my area. The case lot sales offer HUGE savings, too. So, keep an eye on those. Also, my commissary has several different coupon inserts at the front of the store. They usually have a stack of the latest P&G Saver, too!

        • Wendy Moore

Thanks, Jamie! I've been told they have good deals on meats, so I'll have to comparison shop with our local commissary on those.

          • Julie

I agree with Jamie that it's best to buy staples at the Commissary as they often don't go on sale in the other stores. Commissary prices can vary widely in my albeit limited experience. It was cheaper to shop at Walmart when I was in Maryland, but it's much cheaper to shop at my Commissary here in Florida. So you have to pay attention to prices. This is where keeping a price book comes in handy. I did not find the case lot sales in MD to offer a large savings (esp. because I have a Sam's Club membership). I have found that spices are SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper at the commissary. I don't buy any beef at the Commissary however. After years of trying in both Virginia and Maryland and getting the absolute worst, lousy quality meats, I gave up. I only buy pork and chicken there. That's it! Since I began couponing a few months ago, I have realized a significant savings at the commissary using many of the coupons offered in the store or that I clipped from the paper.

            • Julie

One more tip– I buy paper products at CVS of all places. They cycle sales every 60-90 days where you spend $25 and get $10 back in Extra Bucks (store credit). Combine that with a $-off P&G (Procter & Gamble) Q (coupon) and you have an awesome deal. I don't have to buy paper products for MONTHS!!!

    • Tasha

How often are these list updated?

    • Julie

I got Chex Mix at the AFB Commissary for $.25 cents each yesterday. Look for “$.50-cents off 1” peelies on the bag and then grab one of the coupons on the shelf pad for “$1.00 off 2.” Shelf price at my commissary was $1.09 each making it only a quarter after Q's. (Rememer commissary prices vary slightly, so ymmv.)

      • Julie

PS. I got the first coupon *slightly* wrong; the $.50 cent Q is off 2, but that doesn't matter. Total combined coupon deal expires April 11, 2011. Here are the coupons/expiration dates:

Save $.50 cents on (2) when you buy two, any flavor 4.5 oz or larger Chex Mix or Chex 100 Calorie Snack. (exp. 1/30/12) MFR Coupon; Do Not Double

Save $1.00 on (2) when you buy any two 4.5 oz or larger Bugles, Chex Mix, Cheerios Snack Mix or Gardetto's Snack Mixes. (exp. 4/30/11) Military Only coupon.
