Dollar General Coupon Policy

Good News!! If you are a Dollar General shopper you are now able to use printable coupons.

From a press release issued today:

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn., April 09, 2010 – Dollar General (NYSE: DG) is making it even easier for customers to save money by accepting coupons printed from the internet. The discount retailer announced today that all of its stores now accept online coupons.

“Dollar General remains focused on providing customers with convenience and value,” said Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s chief merchandising officer. “We are pleased to welcome online coupons in our stores. We hope this will make it easier for our customers to save more time and money with their coupons at Dollar General.”

All Dollar General stores honor manufacturers’ and Dollar General store coupons that have been printed online. This is in addition to accepting manufacturers’ and store coupons from newspapers, magazines, direct mail and product packaging.

Thanks for the exiting news, DG!

I have to say just the other day i used 2 coupons here and the lady was rude about it. Holding it up to “make sure it was real”. And telling the cashier scan it if it doesnt scan dont take it, very rudely. I did metion however that publix and harveyswould gladly take the coupons

      • Andrew

It always annoys me when these places raise a big stink over coupons that usually amount to $1 or 2 at most. As if we are trying to pull a fast one on them. The DGs around where I live are kind of trashy looking. I literally only go there to get their store coupons to use at Publix lol.

    • Joanie

woo hoo! thanks for the good news!:)

    • Robin

WOW!! I am glad they did this for your'lls area. We have fought ours tooth and nail, but they still won't even take coupons from the paper. They say that they don't take coupons, period…

      • michelle

i would say to that, robin… take in a copy of their weekly sales paper and show them the “fine print”. :)

      • KAWilson

go to their web site and type 'coupon policy' in the search bar — you can print the policy, which clearly states they take coupons and you can stack them with store coupons…. if they still won't, email the company.

I saw this advertised in the store about a week ago. About a week before that I had asked if they accepted internet coupons and was told “no”. Wondering if I'll encounter a problem anyway.

They are smart to give people more options.

They do issue store coupons that can be stacked.

i shop dollar stores for the convience only. i have had so mush trouble w/ coupons there.i have tried tom get them to let me stack coupons before w/ no luck.i even asked them ,dont you send the manuf. coupons to a different place than your store coupons ? i have also asked them to just scan them (manuf ,then store ) and they would not even try it . one cashier told me that she couldn't double my coupon like that.so i just take their coupons to another store.it may take years for all of the stores to figure it out . if your store is w/ it go for it . also, i dont know if it has been posted the 5.00/2 clairol is good for .50 balsam hair color at family dollar ( in had alot of trouble using them the casher was realy nice though he finaly had to give me a discount of 2.50 on each) and he even sugested the best color for me.

    • Awesome!!

I did not even know they didnt take internet coupons but glad they do . I will look closer at their prices and products now. I have used a few coupons that happend to have been insert ones. Now I will look at the ad every week with coupons and DG prices I know I will be able to find some deals. I was lucky with my coupons as I had multiples of the same one and they didnt question them and the items were free after coupons just payed tax.

I used internet coupons last week and had no problem…..

I think, for a while, the trick here is the same as most places: keep a copy with you of their newest coupon policy, so you may show them. I have to hold my tongue here, because it bugs me that so many managers do not train and make sure that their cashiers understand their coupon policies and do not treat customers with such blatant disrespect. And if manufacturers did not want us using coupons, they wouldn't spend so much money putting them out for us!

      • KAWilson

I tried that today — printed policy in hand. The manager at my DG is extremely rude all the time, but I went anyway. They took the internet coupons okay, but would not let me stack them. They both looked at me like I had three heads when I tried to explain that I was using two coupons on one item…blank stares….. I gave up. I did email DG corporate headquarters to see if someone could educate the staff, though. I'll stick with Publix, just wish mine would take DG coupons – they won't….

        • A couple of weeks ago I solely went to DG on a day to use their 10-20% otff printable store coupon. I have used them twice before at that store and this time the cashier refused it saying it was a “:printable” and she wasn't budging and did not take it. I went straight home and e-mailed corporate about my shopping experience and that they needed to educate their staff regarding their coupon policy as well and a GM called me back but I missed their call.Maybe I helped change their printable coupon policy.;)

There is hardly changing anything with DG. I used to work for them and honestly I can say they are the rudest and unprofessional company I have ever worked for. They treat their employees like poo and it even extends to their customers. As for the stores being dirty and nasty, I have to agree. I live in Florida and the store the is near my house is horrible. There are rats and birds roaming around inside and everything is so cluttered you can find anything. I refuse to step foot into a DG anymore. I will drive the 45 miles to a grocery store before I step in a DG.

    • I have never had an issue with them accepting internet printed coupons in the North Ga area where I live but I am happy that more people will get to enjoy this.

P.S. Jenny…thanks for all you do!!!

    • jengc

YAY! This is going to rock since their prices are pretty low to begin with. By the way, I live in Goodlettsville! hehe

    • Joann

yes, I would like to say “Thank You” to the folks at Dollar General for taking internet coupons. I have had several grocery stores and dollar stores refuse my coupons. But,
never has Dollar General in La. refused. They are some very nice employees at the stores here.

    • DonnaTN

I use to work at a DG and that was about 6 years ago and we accepted coupons then. Although the printables weren't around then but we took the ones from the newspaper…I use to always put the coupons I didn't use on the products for the customers.

    • Heather

Mine in Florida has taken the printed coupons from me before. I remember the coffee one especially. The guy was like wow we have this sale for $2.00 and you have $1.00 coupon!!!!!

    • Suemh

I have never had a problem using printed coupons at my local store. I have always been treated well and have never had a problem. However, the manager did tell me that they do not stack store and Mfg q's. I emailed their corporate office to get their coupon policy and they were very prompt and gracious by emailing it to me. This was several months ago, and at that time their policy stated that they did not accept IP's, even though my local store had accepted numerous IP's from me. One employee is a fairly close acquaintance of mine, and if they had a problem with my IP's, I'm sure that she would have told me.

      • KAWilson

They must have changed it due to taking internet coupons, it now says you can stack them, but I still got told 'no' today…. :-(

        • Suemh

They now have their policy on their website under the Customer Service tab. Click on the “question about merchandise” and the policy is one of the questions. I printed the page, but it would not print the right-hand side. So I copied and pasted the text part of the page on a Word page and printed it to put with the incomplete printed webpage.

          • KAWilson

I got the policy to print earlier and had it with me today at the store — the manger still would not honor it.

    • Christina M. E.

I was at the DG today across from the Nashville Zoo. I used a lot of online cpns as well as a few from the paper. The sales associate was unaware of the store now accepting them and had to get the manager. I saved 14.00 in cpns, and spent 16.04. I used the online coupons for the deoderant that we found last month. If you go to DG make sure they take all your onlines and paper cpns…And THANKYOU for letting us know about this!

Well I had a pretty good smallish shopping trip to DG today. I do have a question though regarding coupons in general. The cashier was I believe a manager or supervisor of some sort and was very helpful, pleasant, and accommodating. I don't think she was letting me get away with anything and I wasn't trying to, but I would give her an item, along with a coupon and would ask, “Will this coupon work for this item?” She would ring up an item and then scan the coupon. And if the register wouldn't go through, she'd say, “Nope. Not for this item.” So we did that for a couple things and if it wouldn't go through, then I wouldn't buy the item. I told her upfront that I was trying to get the best bargains for my few items. She was perfectly fine with that and THANK GOODNESS the other cash register was open AND there weren't very many other shoppers in the store. Anyway, I had the $1.00/1 Airwick Aqua spray and there were some Airwick sprays on the clearance shelf. It didn't look like the picture on the coupon, but it did have the word “aqua” on it and it did scan; so having 4 coupons, I bought 4 sprays for $0.00! Next was a pretty good sized bottle of Snuggle that was priced at $3.00. I used my $3/1. Final cost again: $0.00. Scored a tube of $1.00 Crest toothpaste using my $1/1 coupon (it was for a 4 oz and up, but the tube was 3.5 oz and she said she'd let it slide :) I had my $5.00 off coupon for the Scrubbing Bubbles starter kit. I didn't have a clue as to what that was and asked her if she would check to see if they had any in the back. She looked and said no. I asked her if I could use it on a large can of Scrubbing Bubbles and she said if the register took it, then she wouldn't have a problem with it. It went through with no problem; but I somehow felt a little guilty about that transaction. I asked her if she would adjust the coupon to the price of the item, even though I figured they would probably get paid the full $5.00 for it. Next I used my Oil of Olay $5/a coupon and found an Oil of Olay face moisturizer for $5.00. That worked just fine. I paid a few cents tax and was on my way with a bag full of goodies. Did I do OK? Only been doing this a couple months and haven't quite got the hang of it, but today I was a happy couponer!

Good for you kidsallgone!! The DG store in my area is always a wreck. Boxes in the isles, shelves not stocked. I asked the manager once if they accepted coupons and she said yes. I may try them again with coupons. There is a DG about 15 miles from me that is very nice and well organized. May go there. Thanks for sharing your experience.

      • wvarner

Sounds like you did more than OK! Coupon on!

      • carolyn090

where is the 5.00 olay coupon found? in the paper i hope i love it !

    • Kitkatkole

Had went to DG 2 weeks ago and bought several things that I had coupons for, got to the register and was told they didn't take internet printed coupons. I am so glad that they have changed there policy! Coupons are a big part of those type of stores business in the long run it will increase their sales drematically someone in upper managerment needs to realize this and capitalize on it, makes great business sense to me!

    • wvarner

I wish DG doubled coupons. That would be awesome because their prices, even if not on sale, are really good!

Dollar General super store in Fort Oglethorpe, GA is very nice about taking coupons. Was just there this past weekend . . . cashier was quick, efficient and friendly.

    • denise0331

A Dollar General opened a few feet from an existing store (that just closed). They sent $5 off a $20 purchase. I ended up getting 2 of them. The first time I went hardly anything was on the shelves so I couldn't use any coupons (there was nothing left!). Today I was able to use $6 worth of coupons but they made me use them first! So, I had to buy more items than I was expecting to buy. After I had $20 worth of items (excluding tax) they allowed me to use my $5 off coupon. I still saved money. :)
