My kids are always calling me the “coupon freak”. Yesterday, my daughter and I had to run into Food Lion real quick for something and as we were walking from the car, I saw a catalina on the ground in the parking lot that had been run over a few times by cars. I went to pick it up and she was begging me not to (I guess I embarrased her picking up *trash*). It was a FL coupon for $2.50 off next order!! It just about paid for what I was going in for, and I bought my embarrased little darling one of her teen magazines she loves so much. She still went home and told daddy and her brother how I picked up trash, but failed to tell them what it was. Don’tcha just love kids? ;)

      • Amanda

LOL. Luckily my child is only 2….I have done the same and picked up those coupons on the ground or in the buggy.

What’s also wild is I also sometimes just shop for coupons down aisles….where I used to just get my groceries and get home!!

        • Heather

My 2 1/2 year old actually runs down the aisles finding the blinkie machines and pulling out the “poupons” and putting them in my coat pocket!! I used to discourage it, but now just let him go cause I think I would miss a lot of them!!!

          • bridget

lol- my 2 year old yells “I need a coupon!” every time we pass a blinkie machine!

        • Juliett

Oh, yeah! I have (on more than one occasion) gone to Bi-Lo where I know they have blinkies for something on sale at Publix. Then walked out with no groceries just to ride down the street at shop. Throws my kids off, for sure!

          • nancy

I do the same at foodlion just for the new blinkies and new monthly flyiers of Qs. And I tell my DH that i am not picking up trash, but rescueing money not used.
Once I got after my dh on the way to the store about her homework. And while we where in the store she went picking the blinkies in her own way to amend for what she did. When usually she will tell me MOM You are talking all the stores Coupons.

        • Rhonda

I shopped Food Lion today and was excited to find a blinkie for $.60 off any Tetley Tea. I am SAVING it for BI-LO because they’ll double it!!!!

      • Melissa

Lucky You! I would have done the same thing. Sounds like a good time for you to play the lottery or enter a prize drawing of some kind. I get excited about coupons myself….Imagine winning a substantial prize of some kind……

        • Melissa

I would have even chased the coupon across the parking lot if the wind blew it…..

      • Jenni

I just got back from a FL trip were I found TWO Trix coupons left in the carts outside the store! Score! I have no shame in saving money. As long as it’s not illegal or immoral, who can complain?

    • Sue

I do not usually shop at Food Lion, but I did this last week. I bought 40 cans of cat food @ 40¢ each (would have had to buy it anyway, though not all at once). I almost always buy store brand and the cheapest I have found is 34¢. I got a $10 catalina.

      With that I bought:
      DiGiorno Pizza @ $5
      Flatbread Melt(FREE wyb pizza)
      3 Rice-a-Roni @ 75¢(on close-out)
      2 Knorr @ $1
      3 Nestles Cookies @ $2
      1 Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup

      $1 off 3 Rice-a-Roni
      $1 off Nestles x 3
      $1 off Flatbread Melt
      50¢ off Knorr

      Paid 34¢

I only bought the soup because my total was 9.75 and I could not get change back from my catalina!

      I saved a total of 24.15 & only paid 34¢! WOW!

Now I have to work out this week’s trip!

      • Jenni

        That’s awesome! Good thinking!

      • Shawna Crews

        What is a Catalina???

        • Sue

It is a coupon that prints out at the register. In this case, it was $$ off next purchase.

    • Delores

Will we get another catalina if we use the one from our previous trip? I am afraid it will be like the RR at Wags. Or are these rolling? Thanks!

      • Heather

Yes, you will get a catalina even if you use one. I just did it tonight. I bought 10 containers of FL yogurt, used a 2.25 catalina and got a 3.00 catalina back which I turned around and used to buy a DiGiorno Pizza and got my Free Flatbread Pizza. I paid a total of 1.06!!! Great trip!

    • Sabrina

How do you get catalinas at Food Lion? Do they just print out at the register or what? Thanks!

      • Jenni

They print out at the register. (I was just there)

        • Sabrina

          Thanks :)

    • Jenni

Okay, some good deals (nothing fantastic, just decent):

      FL tomato paste, 6 oz: .64 = .39
      Mac and cheese: .49 = .24
      Evaporated milk: .75 = .50
      12 oz chicken and pork franks: .94 = .69
      15 oc tropical fruit cocktail: 5/$5 = .75 e

ALSO: You do NOT have to buy 4 of each item – you just have to buy a minimum of 4 FL store products per transaction, and a maximum of 40. You CAN mix and match! I did, and I had exactly 40 store items, and a catalina printed for $10 off of my next order! Can’t wait to see what is on sale next week!

    • Jody

I went to shop at Food Lion this afternoon b/c I wasn’t for sure if this private brand sale was going to continue through next week. I bought 29 FL/Home360 items and at the end of the transaction, the Catalina did not print. The cashier was clueless, so I immediately went to Customer Service. They were not for sure why it did not print, but they gave me a refund for the difference. Just make sure before you leave the store that you get your coupon and, if not, do not hesitate to stop by customer service on the way out. I don’t know about most of you, but $7.25 is a substantial amount of money to me at this point. Thank you Jenny for all you do! You have actually helped us to make ends meet! I don’t save by couponing for the sake of saving by couponing…..I do it because I have to in order to provide for my family and pay my bills since being laid off and you have made a huge difference in our lives!

      • Jody

One other thing….I really feel that if your finances are decent at this point and you don’t have to coupon….perhaps you should leave the food couponing to those who actually need it rather than cleaning the shelves…I hope that doesn’t sound mean b/c that is not the way it is intended at all. It is just discouraging to visit a Harris Teeter on Super Doubles and the shelves are completely bare when those deals would have helped us out tremendously this month. Sorry if I upset anyone.

I do feel that drug store couponing is different than food couponing.

        • I can understand your frustration, but that’s why I don’t even bother with HT anymore, especially during super doubles. I don’t begrudge ANYONE the need to save money. Even if your finances are “decent” now, it doesn’t mean they will be next year. Save now so you don’t have to pay later…isn’t that the point?
By extreme couponing, I am able to pay my bills every month since I no longer spend $150-200 a week at the grocery store. And I encourage everyone to save money! :) If they don’t have my sale item now? I get a raincheck for later.

        • Cathy

I understand and completly agree with you. I was also laid off and am in the same situtation as you and many other people are. I do enjoy couponing but I also do it because I HAVE TOO. Right now its the only way I can afford groceries. I do believe everyone should only take what they NEED. And they should also remember that some may just need it more than others.

        • CathyL

          Jody & Cathy,
I agree completely. Those of us NEEDING to save NOW (not “Maybe” in the future) do get empty, wiped-out shelves at the grocery store. You are both right, everyone should only take what they really need.

        • Dianne

Isn’t the saying “but for the grace of God go I” I think it’s silly to throw money away no matter what your income is. I can afford to feed my family one way without coupons and one way with coupons – sorry, but I choose my family first. Then my savings can go to other worthy charities.
It’s selfish to say people shouldn’t try to save because you are having a tough time right now. Get there early.

          • Cathy

That is not what we were saying at all!! Yes I do believe that EVERYONE should save every way they can for their families but does that include buying 30 bottles of mustard and 20 bottles of ketchup at one time? Why can’t everyone buy 2 bottles leaving some for everyone? Like I said everyone should buy only what they need…no family needs 30 bottles of mustard…but thats just my opinion.

P.S. I think because you can afford to buy your family groceries without coupons was the reason you so rudely told us to “Get there early.”

        • Janet Plummer

I usually do not shop at Food Lion (but sometimes)… I was just wondering if they will pre-scan and order for people…. at Publix we order by the case…. many of us do this… we have a church coupon ministry and are blessing others with the deals…. we do this so we do not wipe out the shelves and the managers love us for it… at stores with cats you need to bring up item to be bought in cases and have them scan it over and over… in order to get the cats.. then pay using coupons and return to pick up items when truck arrives…. just a thought..

    • Donna

Light & Dark Kidney Beans are 2/$1 or .50 each

      • Michelle

I too found the kidney and other beans for $.50 a can before the sale. I have stocked up on my supply that has been depleted this winter.

        • Kristin

Hi!! I just got back from Food Lion in Franklin, TN. Stocked up on beans/peas as well!! At 50 cents a can I can’t beat that!! Black beans, pintos, blackeyed peas, chili beans, kidney beans…shouldn’t have to buy them for a long time!!

    • Donna

      Question if anyone can answer…
The coupon for the Digiorno Pizza, although it says Ultimate toppings on the coupon could that be used on different varieties as well?

      • nancy

yes, i do it all the time with q as long at the size is correct. ie if it says 8count or 16oz.

        • Donna

thanks nancy, I wasn’t quite sure when they had the deal with the flatbreads…i guess I lucked out on that one!

    • ashley

completely random question, the edys icecream deal:
how long does ice cream stay fresh in the freezer if you dont open it? i dont like icecream in the winter but i love it in the summer… if i buy some now and just save it will it stay fresh? i was thinking of buying low and then in the summer i would be stocked up :D

      • Sue

I am still eating Blue Bell ice cream that I bought in September. Of course it may depend on your freezer and how often it is opened. You could also wrap it good in plastic wrap before you put it up.

      • Tiffany

We have lots of ice cream in the freezer. It is usually good for 6 months or more. Check the date. I will last longer if it hasn’t been opened.

    • Tonya

Just stocked up on jello and yogurt and got my $10 catalina! And a lot of weird looks but I don’t care. Can’t wait to go back and use it!

    • Sarah

My FL catalina says I have to use it on FL brands only. But I’ve seen someone’s message that they used theirs on a Digiorno pizza. How did that work?

      • ElaineHN

Are you sure it says you have to USE it on Food Lion Brand only? Mine doesn’t.

It does have the words “FOOD LION PRIVATE BRAND SUPER SALE” in bold print … and says “Featuring Food Lion Brand and Home 360” in smaller letters beneath that …. but then it just says “$1.25 off your next shopping order.”

        I’ve used a $2 one, a $5, and a $6.50 … and I’ve bought an assortment of FL and non-FL items each time.

        • Sarah

          Oh, duh!!! : )

    • marie

Our Food Lion in NE Columbia has Home 360 diapers BOGO. I bought these the last time they were BOGO and really liked them. I bought the pull up and night time ones for my 3 year old and some size 2 diapers for the baby. At night they haven’t leaked once. My huggies have leaked a lot. So they might be worth a try at this price. I think it comes out to two for $8.99. : ) They might qualify for the brand sale too??? Extra bonus.

Also watch your mail boxes if you’re in NE Columbia. I got a coupon today for the new Food Lion on Hardscrabble road. $10 off of $25 for their Grand Opening sale that is still going on. This is the second coupon I’ve gotten so more free diapers. Yea!

      • Melissa

We keep getting the ads for the new FL on Hardscrabble and not getting the regular ad for the other stores – frustrating since the grand opening sales prices are for that store only. Haven’t gotten a q in the mail either. The new store is pretty :)

    • Judy

If I have a coupon for B1G1 on the Weight Watchers meals, and the store sale is B1G1, does that make them both free? I also have a $4 off 10 so should I use them both at the same time or not? Thanks.

      • Susan

I think the B1G1 will make it 2 for the price of 1/2 of one since they will ring up at half price. Does that make sense?

    • Stacy

I went to my Food Lion yesterday in Concord, NC and they didn’t have hardly any of their private brand stuff on sale. The mac n cheese was .49, the pencil sharpeners were .79, pencils were .99, etc. Are the prices that you gave a regional thing? I asked the store manager about the prices and they didn’t know anything about private brand stuff being on sale, just the buy so many and get so much off your next order. Strange….just thought I’d ask.

Thanks for all you do! I know that its hard work and we really appreciate it!! :D Thanks!!!

    • Emily

Earlier this week I bought two packages of huggies pull ups that were on sale. I had two manuf. coupons (from internet) and one store coupon(from FL website) and one catalina for $1 off any baby puchase (from a previous trip to FL). So, that would be two coupons per package of pull ups. The manager and cashier were right there both telling me I could not have two internet coupons per item. I’ve done this before so I told them that and they insisted several times that I couldn’t do that. I explained that I had two coupons per item- one a manuf. coupon and one a store coupon.

Has anyone read up on FL’s policy? Does this sound right to you?

They did force it through eventually, but I just hate going through all that and then feeling like I’m trying to rip them off…

      • Michelle

I have used manuf. and store coupons at the same time on the same product. I think some of the cashiers like to read the coupons and some of the teen cashiers just scan coupons unless the register stops the coupon.

    • Debbie

Does anyone know if there is a way to find out what catalina deals are going on at Food Lion? I have looked all of the FL website and can’t find anything.

    • Stacy

Is anyone else having problems with the FL private brand items not being on sale this week?!

    • Amy J’rock

Hi, everyone! I was just at my local Food Lion this morning (in Hinesville, Georgia) and they have a case of Deer Park Spring Water on sale for $1.99! Not sure if this is all F.L. stores or just local sale, but the cases were located at the very front of the store across from the cash registers.
Also, I like going to F.L. on Friday mornings because occasionally they will give the ladies a bouqet of flowers (yes, free!)….so nice!
Also, I am very new to this extreme couponing thing….I’ve got CVS down-pat, now I’m working on getting Kroger and Food Lion down (since this area is limited on it’s grocery stores)….it’s taking a while, but I’m sure as I stick with it, I’ll start seeing big savings!
Thanks for this wonderful Southern Savers website, Jenny! :-)

    • Jennifer C.

Bought 40 of the single cans of Food Lion soda for 33¢ per can and got the 10.00 catalina back. One store had them in the deli section and one store had them at the front of the store. I ended up with 80 cans of different kinds of soda for 6.40! They are in a vertical, three-tiered, basket style stand.

    • Jenni

Go to “Grocery Store Coupons” at the top center of the main page, and scroll down and you will see a PDF link for the coupon. It works.

Hi, I work at a FL in South Carolina and am always prepared for the hectic rushes by faithfully checking this website. I’m 18 and a college student, so any money is a lot of money right now and I use more coupons than most of my family combined! I stocked up on closeout FL dinnerware at .49/ea and got a $2.50 coupon which paid for a work break! This site has taught me so much. Thank you Jenny for all you do!

I stocked up on forks, knives and spoons that were in clearance for 25¢ each by the front door of Food Lion. I bought 40 and got $10.00 back.

I know exactly what you mean! I am currently laid off and 21, and our family is using coupons alot right now. It’s amazing to see how much we can get for free/super cheap that we used to pay full price for. I am hoping to make it to FL to stock up on the canned beans today, because that is a GREAT price, and our family makes alot of chili! I love this website!

Some closeouts I found Sunday. Olay creme ribbons $2.14, there are several $1 man q’s out there. Scott Natural single roll paper towel $1.28, there is a $1 printable.

      Just had to share.

watch your receipt carefully and your catalina’s – I was shorted $1 on two transactions yesterday (bought 40 FL brand items in 2 transactions) and didn’t notice it until later. My catalina’s only printed out $9.25 and $9.75 and my receipts clearly showed 40 FL brand items.

At my FL, POST Grape-Nuts are 2/$4. Plus use the q in the SS 1/17 for $1/2 = $1.50 each.

I believe the last day for this is tomorrow (Tues). My family LOVES Grape Nuts!

Went to the Oakwood Georgia location and purchased 20 items and DID not get the Catalina. They said their location was closing and corporate wasn’t issuing them anymore
