I just got home from shopping at Food Lion for the first time in 5 years.  I had to get an MVP card just shop… never had one of those before.  I’m proud of Food Lion for finally having such an awesome sale that you lured me in.  Keep it up!

We ran to Food Lion and Publix tonight.  I am so exhausted that I had no energy to line everything up for you.  Here’s a picture of the massive amount we grabbed.  If you were in the store with me I apologize for my twins who were singing at the top of their lungs in the buggy.  Really I’m sorry if the song they were singing is now stuck in your head…  it’s not quite the right time of the year for Joy to the World.

I had all of last weeks Grocery money so we made this really two weeks worth of shopping.

Food Lion:
Total Before Sales & Coupons – $123.89
Total Spent – $48.33
Total Saved – $75.56 or 61%

Total Before Sales & Coupons – $160.27
Total Spent – $50.73
Total Saved – $109.54 or 68.5%

Weekly Totals:
Before Sales & Coupons – $284.16
Spent – $99.06
Saved – $185.10 or 65.2%

A few comments to frequently asked questions:

  • What coupons did you use?” Honestly guys I print the shopping list from Southern Savers and use the coupons matched right there.  Remember everything on the list is the lowest price for that item in that store.  Coupon or no coupon, many times it is still a great deal.  Tonight I didn’t stray at all from list… so much so that I forgot Milk because I didn’t write it down.
  • Savings is great but “what about the time it takes?” I clocked myself.  I spent 35 minutes to cut coupons for both stores.  I spent 45 minutes in Food Lion shopping (I had no clue where anything was) and then spent 32 minutes in Publix which included time to chat with my favorite grocery manager.
Total Time Spent: 1 hour 52 minutes
That means I basically made $99.16 an hour to use coupons!!!
  • “I can’t handle shopping every store in town”
My norm is really only one store a week.  Look over the lists and pick the best store for your needs for that week.  I also use the $1 or less list to get a quick glimpse of what store would be best to spend my time on.  Then use the main weekly list for that store to get ready.

Okay your turn.  How did you do this week?  Leave a comment or a link to your savings post.

I'm loving that they were singing Joy to the World in October! lol That's too cute! I got $170.20 worth of stuff at Rite Aid for $52.00 last night! I surprised the cashier. She just stood there with her mouth wide open. lol I told her about you Jenny!!! I even invited her to come to a class with me sometime. People think its so hard but once they get started it really is so much easier. Keep up the great work Jenny!

    • pennywiseinasheville

Jenny, please tell your little girls I said sing little angles, sing. I'm a “little” older than they are and this past week I got out my Christmas CD of Bing Crosby and sang up a storm while I was home alone. When I told my family what a great day I had with Bing, they were kinda like you, “Mom it's a little early isn't it”. Nope, not for me it isn't.

    • Bwilliams25

I saved $93.95 today at Food Lion. I am new to this couponing, but I have to tell you that I so appreciate you and your site. It has helped me so very much! You are a true God send…thank you for all the time you put into your site, it truly helps me each week. I think I am beginning to get the hang of this, because last week I saved $78.77 at Publix. Whoo-Hoo

    • Shelley_ogburn

I did the exact same thing regarding Food Lion-was so excited about my cheese. I spent 67.08 for 2 weeks, but I will need to hit cvs with a few coupons and freebies on Sunday. Should get diapers free, shick razors for free and a few others. Thank you so much for your website..it has saved me time, money, frustration, and many aggravating trips to Walmart(I hate that store)

      • Kelskidcc

        Hate me some Wal-Mart also!!!

    • Ruth

Thanks again for hosting the weekly link-up Jenny!

Shopping with kids is definitely the real adventure. Juggling a few coupons is nothing in comparison! :-)

      Have a great weekend.

    • Inclass4evr

My twins were singing through Publix tonight, but they are only 1, so not too sure what the words were. They copycat whatever the 3 yr old is doing, so makes for a fun fun trip, NOT! I did 2 trips to Publix this week, one from last weeks ad, and one from the new ad. Tonight I spent 19.XX and got 10 bags of kraft shredded cheese, 6 bricks of cheese, 4 packs of krafts singles, 4 cans of muir glenn, bananas, pears, 4 bags of fish sticks, 4 glade oils, 2 glade warmers, 2 ritz munchables, 4 jars of salsa, 2 packages of tortillas, 3 packages of taco seasoing, 2 cans of enchilada sauce, 2 cans of refried beans, 2 boxes of the taco kits, 4 bottles of baby formula, 10 quarts of milk, 4 packages of hotdogs, thats what I remember I bought. Not too bad!!

    • April Hollingsworth

I did the best ever tonight. I'm still new at this. I went to Publix and did 3 transactions so that I could use the various $5 off $25 purchase coupons! The cashier didn't mind at all! On my first transaction I spent 18.10 (including tax) and saved $13.34.

      second: $19.04 with a savings of 18.49

      third: 70.13 with a savings of 56.21

If you like Nature Valley Granola Bars, this is the week to get them at Publix!!!

      • We got 5 boxes :) It is a good week for those!

    • Lorannclark

I went to CVS and bought 2 boxes of cornflakes (on sale @ $2.00 each), 2 Dawns (on sale @ 96 cents each) 2 Always pads (on sale @ $2.99 each) plus found unadvertised Campbells Tomato soup @ 50 cents each, so I bough 7 cans. Total a little over $16.00. Had a CVS coupon for “$3.00 off $15.00”, ECBs and my summer savings, plus manufacture coupons for all items except the soup. Grand total $1.21. Less than 1 box of cereal on sale!! I was so excited. I have only been doing this for about 2 months now and am starting to get a hang on couponing and how to shop @ CVS. Thanks for all you do. I have learned a lot!

    • Amy Lauren

I hope Food Lion's good sales keep up. My mom and I were on the phone today, and she was excited about all the good deals she got at Food Lion today. It's the only grocery store in her town besides a local place that accepts coupons but isn't a chain and doesn't have good sales. A lot of the small towns around here have Food Lion so it really helps us small town-ers when they have such great sales!

    • Dianne

Aww, I think Joy to the World is appropriate any time of year! Enjoy those little ones!

    • not catching on

Just haven't caught on yet. Went to both CVS locations in Orangeburg Monday to get the $23 Oral B Vitality toothbrush with $13 ECB and had the $10 coupon; with the canned Cokes and Bounty paper towels to come next. They were out of the toothbrushes.

Asst. manager told me a truck would bring more Thursday morning , to phone and verify and ask them to put one back for me. Thurs. morning I phoned the J. C. Calhoun store and they said, “Yes the toothbrushes came in but they were too busy with a customer to take my name and hold for me.

I drove 5 miles from my house to the store expecting to get the toothbrush, Cokes and much needed paper towels .

They had no toothbrushes and none had come in despite what the clerk told me! That same asst. mgr. gave me rainchecks, but made excuses for the bad phone information saying the clerk was new. He phoned the other Orangeburg store and none had come in there either. Told me to come back next Thursday when the next store delivery was due. I ask him about getting in touch with the CVS District Manager and he finessed, not doing it.

Southern Savers has said CVS is “the” place to get deals. Can't prove it by me.

      • tarabj

CVS is great, and those rainchecks will get you the deals in the long run. Sometimes it takes a month or more for them to be stocked again, but it will come around and you will have a good deal. Some things are easier to get than others.

      • Hasfam

I'm waiting for the toothbrush as well. Spoke with a CVS GM last night and he said the warehouse was wiped out. The MFR didn't anticipate such a response. I don't mind waiting but the coupons expire 10/31 and with out the coupon its not a good deal. Crossing my fingers that prduction and shipping happen before the 31st.

    • Stephanie G

I got home from Food Lion about the same time you did, Jenny! I spent $25.27 on $67.73 worth of food (savings of 62.7%), and that was without the $5 Kraft cheese coupon and a few other deals that I had to put off till tomorrow (my printer ran out of ink and I couldn't print some of the coupons I had intended to take with me till I get more in the morning). It was also my first time trying out Food Lion, and I'm just getting started in couponing, so thanks so much for all the hard work you do! You really make it easier for people like me who want to save money, but don't know where to start on our own.

    • I have a Food Lion 3 minutes away, yet have rarely shopped there for anything more than one or 2 specific items in the past several months. THIS week, they are getting almost my entire budget!

    • Fairyphotographer

I had a great trip to Publix tonight! Got lots of boxes of granola bars, some rainchecks from last week, Green Giant veggies, and other odds and ends (all on sale of course!). Total before discounts was $132.17. Total out of Pocket was $63. 53. Total Saved was $68.64 or a little more than 50% (too beat to do the math). Thank you so much Jenny – you have truly made this possible for me. Without you, I would not be succeeding at couponing!

    • tarabj

Thank you for being so real about couponing. You hear tons of stories about how people go into Publix and spend 13 cents to get $150 worth of groceries. Of course they don't say they only got jello and fleishman's yeast and that they spent at least $10 on couponing services to get multiple coupons or God only knows how much to get 20+ newspapers.

I only get two newspapers and then my friend gives me her coupons. I try to feed my family, stock up a bit on what we use frequently, and buy things like milk, bread, and fresh fruit. If I save 50% of my total, it is a good week. If I save more, I'm excited & tell people about it.

Thank you for not only the service you provide, but the honesty as well. I really appreciate that just as much. <3

      • noella

I absolutely agree with you. It actually made me smile to see the stuff just dropped. If I had to listen to twins singing for that long the stuff would have stayed in the car till I gave the twins something chewy for the jaws other than singing lol. Keep up being yourself Jenny. It keeps me coming back.

    • kelli

I'm curious about what got you into Food Lion after all that time? I shop there occasionally, when they've good deals. Before I was a couponer, I never shopped there because for the most part I feel like their prices are higher than Kroger but now that I coupon, I've found that they do have pretty good deals, at least every few weeks.

I did a really bad job at keeping track of what I bought this week. I'll post my numbers in a bit. :)

      • It was the free cream cheese and 30 cent Kraft Cheese mostly and then they had 40 B1G1 deals. And a 3 day ad with really cheap toilet paper.

        • kelli

I figured it had to be the bogo sale. I've done 4 transactions of the cheese/cream cheese so far. I'll probably go back for more before the end of it. :)

      • kelli

        before sales/coupons: $95.46
        oop: $2
        saved: $93.46 or 98%

        before sales/coupons: $65.10
        oop: $2.11
        saved: $62.99 or 94%
I ended with $9 more +ups then I started with but I've got $11 +ups expiring tomorrow, so I've gotta go spend those

        before sales/coupons: $98.42
        oop: $5.91
        saved: $92.51 or 94%

        oop: $4.59
        saved: $57.96 or 93%

        • kelli

I forgot to mention that I got 4 free cookbooks from Food Lion. They are free wyb any 4 Philly cream cheese. It's a $19.99 value, although I would probably never spend that much on a cookbook.

    • Lindas shopping 4 less

Hi there I went to publix this week and did 391.01 for 40.20

      • Tigress1321

        wow that incredible.

    • Caroline

You are so wonderful, not just because you maintain this site, but because you are so honest and genuine! I'm glad you had a great shopping trip. I also went to FL thanks to you, and got great deals on Kraft cheese, Clorox, and Charmin. Cheers!

    • Tigress1321

I went to publix total bill was about $115 saved $73 and spent $42. not too bad. got butter, halls, milk, taco stuff muffin mix…ect…

      • Tigress1321

Glad you finally got to go shopping Jenny!!!

    • Melissa

I spent $35 at Food Lion and saved $90! It was so much fun! And to make it better, I found a rebate form laying on the shelf for Ronzoni pasta… buy any 6 boxes and get $3 back by mail. It looks like you have to use this form, but it says they're available in stores (although this was the only one I found). Plus, there were blinkies, so I think I paid about $0.82 for all 6 boxes and should get $3 back by mail! Crazy! So if you're there, look around for this rebate form.

    • Bamarsh

I left Walgreen's with more CASH than I came in with, and tons of stuff!!

I got $20 worth of Wet n Wild cosmetics, 2 Vaseline lotions, and Reese's cups (I was hungry) My total oop was $5ish and the 2 $5 RR's didn't print, only one. So the manager refunded one of the lotions, for $6.34 and let me keep the lotion! So I came out with a few more dollars than I came in with!! I think he was confused, I tried to say that it wasn't right, but he said don't worry about it! Oh and I have $6 in RR's left over!!

      • 3monkeysmom

If you bought the 2 lotions in 1 transaction, then only 1 RR would've printed. When you're purchasing products that give you back RR, just get one per transaction (of the same item…if you have 2 different RR items, then they will both print). If you had split the Vaseline lotion into 2 transactions, both RR would've printed. Hope that helps :-)

    • Donna

I only made one trip this week, though I'm still planning on hitting Food Lion to at least get the Kraft Cheese deal plus a few other minor things and CVS maybe.

      before sales/coupons: $63.80
      oop: $16.63
      saved: $47.17 or 73%

Pretty happy with that! I'm using that tracking spreadsheet that you have available and I've only been couponing for 3 weeks now, but my cumulative savings is 77%, so I thank you and my budget thanks you!! I have more food in the house now than I have in a LONG time & more money left in the bank. Feels like a minor miracle to me! :)

I'm glad you finally had some time to shop for your own family this week too! Don't forget to always make time for yourself and them!

    • Laura

Jenny, you just let those twins sing. It's a sign of happy, contented children and shoppers would rather hear singing then screaming. So sing on kiddos!! Thanks for all your help with couponing.

    • Sneverette

I just attended your class in Greenville, NC last weekend. Thank you so much for all that you do! I went to Food Lion this week. My total was $200.45 and after MVP and coupons my total was $95.67!! I was so excited and the cashier was amazed. I shared with her your site and she said she was going home to take a look at that b/c she couldn't believe the savings. Thank you so much Jenny!!

    • mommyof3

This is my first week of copouning, and I was so excited! I print out a list from SouthernSavers, grabbed my coupon album( I use two 4×6 photo albums,1 for groceries 1 for none-food items and sort the coupons in alphabetical order) and headed to PUBLIX.My total was $222.64 before savings. OOP $93.39 ,saved $129.25= 57.28%.

Not bad for my first coupon shopping day!

      • mommyof3

After that I went to Winn Dixie, which is only 1/4 mile down the street for the B1G1 deal on the Oral B tooth brushes.I bought 8:

        Savings: $35.61= 92.66%

    • Katie

New at this, but first time really sticking to my list and saved 31%….$120 total and only spent $89. That is big in my book. I feed a family of 5 (5yr old, 2yr old, 1yr old, and hubbie with type 1 diabetes). We go through a TON of snack food! Publix has always been my place to shop and with your help and coupons I made the best of the BOGO offers. Thanks for this website….I'm sure I'll do better the more I go on with the program :)

    • Thethreeclouds

FYI: I went to the Food Lion on River Rd in Columbia and they gave me a huge hassle about using the E-coupons. After talking with them for a while, they agreed to let me use most of them but outright refused to let me use the Kraft $5/5 which is only available online but is advertised on the actual cheese wrappers. They did not give me the $5 off for the Capri Sun, Peanut Butter, and Rice Krispy deal either. Very frustrating. I don't think I'll be going back. Publix on Gervais never gives us a hassle….Ever.

    • PamF

If You are looking for the kraft deal at Food Lion most stores are out of stock including the warehouse so make sure u get a rain check and in a week or so food lion will be running buy 5 kraft items get $5 off your purchase.
