This week we made one quick trip for a household staple that we were thrilled to see on sale, Pop Tarts!  I don’t know exactly how many boxes we left the store with but after putting them in the pantry I’m thinking we will head back for some more before the sale ends.

Between the three kids (and the adults) we can go through a box every other day!  We are going to need a Pop Tart rationing program…

Total Value: $35.66
Total Spent: $18.90
Total Saved: $16.76

This also included a last minute run for two non sale items to make fajitas.  It was May 5th, what else was I going do?

Big Tip here…  try to never have a last minute run for anything.  It’s pretty much always full price when you do.

How did you do this week?  Leave a link or a comment.

I try to spend about $25/week and no more than $100/month. I spent over my budget this week though. I had a chance to buy a membership to local farm where we'll receive 5 pounds of veggies (my choice from what they've got) a week for 24 weeks. We'll also get 8 dozen ears of corn and a 10 pound pumpkin in the fall. All of this cost me $35, or $1.46 per week. It seemed like too good of a deal to pass up.

because people often ask how I've saved so much, I've broken down my transactions from CVS and Rite Aid.

      total before sales/coupons: $71.57
      total oop: $.14
      total saved: $71.43 or 99%

      – $1 off Tums
      – $2 off Tums CRT
      – $11.99 extra bucks

      – $13.97 extra bucks (adjusted down from $13.99)

      + $.90 tax
= $.90, I forgot to use my $1.50 off Sensodyne Iso-Active, so they refunded in cash, so real cost = -$.60

      total oop: $41.80
      total saved: $213.30 or 84%

      • carmengbailey

Kelli, where do you live that you bought the farm membership? how did you find out about that? we have a huge market that opens the end of the month and i'll go every saturday to buy my produce, but it's not that cheap…just wonering if i can find something like that around the birmingham area.

        • kelli

I live in southwest virginia. I found out about the farm thing from my mom, who found out about it from a friend. She works next to the store front for the farm, I'm guessing that's how she found out about it. I couldn't quite believe it when my mom told me about it.

          • gatorash

Thats awesome. I wish we had something like that around here! Carmen- if you find one near Birmingham please let me know! That's not very far at all for me!

      • LeAnnaShaw

Kelly could you tell me the formula you use for figuring out what % you save. I am coming up at a loss. For instance, I spent 173.15 oop this week. I saved 292.01 in coupons. I would like to break my savings down as well. So I can see where I need to work on oop. Thanks

        • kelli

this is how I figure it.
          total oop = $x
          total saved = $y
          total before coupons/sales = $z or $x + $y
          percent saved = $y/$z
I count tax in my totals because to me that's cost, and really most of what I spend at cvs, rite aid, and now walgreens too.
I subtract any SCRs that I'm going to get from Rite Aid because they're guaranteed, unlike other rebates where you're never 100% sure you'll get it.
I usually subtract any rebates that I get back in the mail during the week from my weekly total but for some reason I didn't do that this week.

For your numbers, I would add the two together.
          $173.15 + $292.01 = $465.16 (total before sales/coupons)

          $292.01/$465.16 = .628 or 62.8%

Where are the poptarts on sale? I live in the Irmo area too and my family gobbles these up quick!

      • carmengbailey

        @ Publix BOGO $2.29

    • miatd

just a quick trip ..i went to kroger for a few sale items and the old spice deal…..my total came to roughly 80.00 and i paid out of pocket 11.00 …HOW HAPPY WAS I…HUBBY AND CASHIER WERE AMAZED!!!

    • wendy

My Publix had a tear pad of pop tart coupons ($1.00/2) right next to the BOGO so I got 40 boxes for my family of 7! :D

    • Deshaine

      I saved $85, spend $40. It was a good trip! :)

    • Melissa H

Jenny, I'm so glad I'm not the only one who stocked up on Pop Tarts! I bought 16 boxes, and I'm the main one who eats them in my house, lol! They just hardly ever go B1G1, you pretty much have to take advantage of the deal when you're Pop Tart obsessed, right?! :) My regular Thursday morning cashier and bagger thought I was weird this week because my buggy mostly consisted of Pop Tarts, Beechnut baby food for my soon to be born daughter, Nivea body wash, and Dove deodorant, lol! Thanks for all you do!!!

      • Karen

I’m aware that my views on diet may sound anal to lots of people, which is why I keep them to myself most of the time. But it blows my mind to think that people feed their kids Pop-Tarts every day. Sometimes twice a day. Please people, think about what you’re feeding your kids, and what you’re teaching them. Remember that it’s not just about obesity. It’s about heart health and cancer and diabetes and premature aging..all of the diseases that too much sugar and processed foods encourage.

Please play by the rules!! We didn't check our 5/02 paper before we bought it–and someone STOLE all of the coupons out of it. AGAIN–PLEASE PLAY BY THE RULES!!

      • kelli

I ALWAYS check my papers before buying them. I've gotten home to find no coupons way too many times not to. No matter where I buy them from, I always check.

      • Melissa H

Do you live in Central FL? This past Sunday we had a whole section of town (of course the one I live in) where Orlando Sentinel was actually fully to blame for not including any of the 3 inserts in the paper! I went to Publix, Walgreens and CVS and looked through every single one of their papers and not a single one had any inserts – SS, RP, or PG. I sent a highly disgruntled email to O.S. (I'm almost 8 months pregnant and had to stand there with my cankles and sore back and look through over 100+ papers and didn't find inserts) and lo and behold 3 sets of each insert showed up in my mailbox Tuesday morning :) … But if you are here in C FL, I recommend always checking before buying … I've had it happen where it was obvious that O.S. didn't include everything but I've also had it happen where it was obvious someone stole the inserts (half a ripped page was left) … Here's praying we ALL have a better time of it tomorrow!

This is the 7th day I've been religiously checking around for deals and collecting coupons, and I'll have to say I'm not doing too bad for a beginner :)

I didn't save all my receipts like I had wanted to, but my memory is pretty good within about $1 or so of spent and I vividly remember how much I saved of course lol.

All in all I bought (at Wags, cvs, and Target):

      2 Veet
      Vaseline Sheer Infusion Lotion
4 count Bic Soleil Bella razors
      Covergirl foundation and eyeliner
      4 Benadryl Itch relief sticks
2 Right Guard sample sized deos
      2 Nivea Lip Gloss
2 full size and one trial size Dove deos
2 Full size Right Guard deos
2 Off clip on Starter kits
      Infusium 23 leave in conditioner
a small purse, first aid kit, 3 kleenex purse packs, mini scrapbook, mini scrapbook kit, light bulbs (2 packs of 4)
      4ct Jimmy Dean Breakfast sandwiches
      English muffins
      Oscar meyer deli creations sandwich
      California Kitchen pizza (personal size)

      Total Value: $116.08
      Total Oop: $37.37
      Total Savings: $78.71

I don't think thats so bad for my first stab at it. I'm definately happy. Hopefully I'll keep getting better at it. Really hoping to get into Cvs on a regular basis to make some money :)

Thank you to all who do this on a regular basis with success and share. I got a lot of my deals because you chose to post what you found! Thanks again!

    • Lyvismommy

I hit Publix & Target up yesterday, and didn't do quite as well as I wanted. (Our area papers didn't get all the inserts that I was hoping for yesterday!) However, my husband went with me for the 1st time since my frugal gene kicked in, and he was amazed. He didn't even believe me when I said it wasn't that great of a week. He just just ecstatic that he got 2 Armoral products for free!
      Total Before Savings: 79.09
      Total After Savings: 21.01

      Total Before Savings: 13.08
