Over the Christmas holidays we got a big present from Pepboys… new tires for our minivan.  I’ve gotten a lot of random things in the mail over the almost 3 years of running Southern Savers, (the most recent being a bottle of Tabasco sauce and an avocado) but this was the first thing that was desperately needed.  Over the last 2 years with all of our crazy travels we have put over 40,000 miles on our poor van!  The tires it had on it were there when we bought it used a few years ago so it was time.

***For more product reviews and giveaways go here.***

If you’ve never had car care done at Pep Boys (I hadn’t before this) they have a great online reservation system that really streamlines everything.  I kind of felt like I was taking my car to the doctor after filling out all the fields but when we walked in they had everything done and paper work signed so we handed them the keys and they were off working.

I decided to wait there for the car but another fun feature of the reservation system if you didn’t wait is that you can track the progress of your car!  (The doctor’s office doesn’t even have that feature!!)

As for the tires, Pepboys carries lots of name brands but they also carry their own house brand called Definity (made by Cooper Tires).  I might not always push house brand groceries but for other purchases this really can be a HUGE money saver.  The tire made for our van was $40 cheaper per tire than the name brand version also made by Cooper!  At this point I know that I’m a girl and there are probably a lot of other factors to consider, but even with all the other things you might ponder you have to agree that cost does play a factor in your decision.

So far these tires have been great.  It might be me being silly but I think it makes me feel like I’m driving a new car.  Actually two days after getting the tires was the Christmas snow storm of the south and it was an amazing comfort to drive across the south visiting family and know that we were at least safer with better traction and good tires.

A deal for you:

If you are in the market for tires Pepboys has all Definity, Cooper and Hankook Tires Buy 3, Get 1 Free plus right now they have a printable coupon that you can use on top of the B3G1 deal for an additional $20 to $50 off!

(Tune in tomorrow morning for something even more fun for you from Pepboys, Free Car Care/Stuff!!!)

For those that are more car savvy what tips would you give people looking for new tires??
Any money saving ideas?

Thanks Jenny! I do use PepBoys a lot! Hubby puts about 100 miles on his truck a day/ 6 days a week!

    • Valgal1119

We use Pepboys for tires and have been very pleased!

    • Traci

I am actually jealous. :) I have been putting off this much needed purchase but this sounds like a great deal. I have never used Pepboys before but it sounds like a good experience. One thing I hate to do as a female is deal with car stuff. I always walk out feeling slightly dazed and taken advantage of.

more inportant than the price is tread wear rating and traction rating and warenty on tread life.

    • Blonderw03

Wish there was one in my area! Closest one to us is almost an hour away!! Not worth the drive :-(

    • Tammyla

We always buy our tires at Sam's never tried Pep boys before

Don't automatically assume a dealership will rip you off. They're great for cheap oil changes ($26 range on up) – a lot of times the service departments will have coupons (or mail them to you), and in my dealer's case, they will give you one free after you get so many done. (I think its 4) You have an added bonus that they will inspect all the systems of your car and give you a heads up on anything potentially wrong.

I have purchased Cooper tires twice before and will never do it again..Anything that you can try out for free is a good deal, but they truly are not a good quality tire in my opinion. Maybe they make them better than they used to.

When I go to buy new tires, I always do my research online. I search for tires and read the reviews to see if others are happy with their purchase then I lean more towards that specific brand or tire. The last set of tires I bought I purchased from Discount Tire and I have always been pleased with the service there. I found the Michelin tires cheaper at another store and when I went in without any questions asked they price matched and took a little more off the price. If you find the tire cheaper somewhere else then print it out and take it to Discount Tire and they price match. Another bonus was that there was a mail in rebate for the tires I bought, and they went ahead and knocked the price off the tires right in the store. I will use Discount Tire from now on.

Pep Boys Definity tires are the best!!

    • Sunshine

They also have a rewards program. We have gotten several free oil changes and money off of car repair!

I will never shop at Pep Boys again. I had bought a sets of 560. tires. with Pep boys telling us they has a 100. rebate on them. Only reason we bought the set. Got some send all info in like we were told to do and guess what no rebate. Called pep boys and the girl nicely said “smacks lips, girl we never offer rebates on thems type tares”. This doesnt even include all the other issues I have had with my pep boys store. Im sure other pep boys are just as friendly and nice as can be, but my local one needs alot more training.

too bad we dont have a pep boys in wilmington nc….
we are buying tires next week :(

      • I live in Wilmington NC, if you are willing to drive about 40 min outside of town to Shallotte, there is a place there (Skip's Tire— I think there is one in southport too???) that has good used tires for $20/tire and they don't charge installation. i got 4 tires on my car for $80… i will admit 2 have worn a little bit more than i would've liked, but we found out that was due to my car badly needing to be aligned (speaking of Midas on Oleander near the mall has alignments for $49— cheapest I've found so far)

Jenny, please forgive me if I missed it, but is this for a limited right, day/ week etc, and how long is the coupon good for..waiting on my husbands W2s. We have used PepBoys, the only reason we stopped was because they were over an hr away, but with a deal like this, might be worth the trip. Tks

    • Mary

Ok, my one tip is this, if you cant afford new tires, ask if they have Good Used tires (Tread etc). Some people will baulk at this, but it has saved us money in the past, when things were very, very tight and my husband had to have a way to work.

      • that's what my husband and I have been doing. a place near us offers good used tires for only $20/tire and they don't charge for installation…. it was $80 for 4 new tires!
