$5 off $50 at Publix

This is replacing the Penny Item this week.  Find the coupon in you Publix Sunday ad.

Get all of this weeks Publix Deals and Coupon Matches! There is a brand new Yellow Advantage Buy Flyer that started yesterday and there is also a Green Advantage Buy Flyer out.

Florida Folks:  You don’t normally get the Penny item, so let us know if you got the coupon!

    • Kate

is the $5 off $50 before or after coupons?

      • Lori

If you give them $5.00 coupon first, they will take it off before the coupons. Give them the other coupons after and you will be fine.

      • Amanda

Depends on how they ring your coupons I bet! We had a great lady last night. We had 2 $5 of $25 Rite Aid and split our order. She rang the $5 off first even though my hubby just put all the coupons of the belt! I will look for her again! But try giving them that coupon first and see. Good luck!

      • Amber

Hi All! I did get the coupon here in central Florida but it was in Saturday’s paper. The Publix insert usually comes on that day. So glad you mentioned it though I had to dig my paper out to find it and otherwise would have missed it. Thanks!

      • AngelaDH

The Ooltewah/Snow Hill Publix said they are treating it as $50 before coupons. :) Yippee…I used it tonight! :)

      • Ann

        Hi All,
the penny itme at publix is good until thursday and you can stack it with the red Piggly Wiggly sticky on the front of Sunday’s paper for $10 off an order of $50 or more.

    • Linda

Thanks Lori! I’m gonna try that today!

    • Amy G

so can you use this coupon on top of the rite aide coupon $5/$20?

      • ashley benz

Amy I used a 5 of 25 Rite Aide Coupon and the 5 off 50 Publix Coupon at my Publix in Goose Creek SC this morning. Hope this helps! -Ashley

    • Jessica

WOW!! I love this penney item since my publix only takes Kroger and Ingles coupons now and I do the majority of my shopping at Publix :)

    • lynn

I was so disappointed to learn that my Publix no longer takes the Rite Aid $5 off coupon. Several people were abusing (horribly) and now it has messed up everyone. Thanks for all of the good advice I am really just getting into this full swing (I do not know why I waited) but this site and you all have been so helpful.

      • Lynette

My Publix decided it will only take Kroger and Target coupons now. I was using Rite Aid and Food Lion. I was so disappointed.

    • Tammy

Does anyone know if there was a coupon for Piggly Wiggly in the Post and Courier in Charleston SC to use at Publix today?

      • Dawn

Yes! It was a red Piggly Wiggly sticker for $5 off a $50 purchase on the very front of the Post and Courier.

        • Kelly

Mine was for $10 off $50!!!!

          • Cheryl

I did not get one on my paper

            • Katie

              Neither did I!! Ack!

      • Dawn

I put $5 and meant to put $10 off $50 purchase!

        • Mel

I used the #10 off of $50 PW coupon at Publix on Main Road Charleston. Took it no problem but they didn’t take the $5 off $50 Publix since my total was only just over $50. Said it had to be $100 to use both. Went to the wrong cashier, most take all you hand over!

    • Jessica

Does anyone know if you can split up transactions to get more than one of the $5/$50? I have not done my Publix shopping this week and have over $60 to buy these coupons would be great for future shopping.

    • Val

Is it just me, or is anyone else not that excited over this coupon? Don’t get me wrong I love Publix, but I can use a $5 off $25 coupon from another store and still usually get a $3 or $4 item for a penny. My local store is going to stop taking most competitor coupons after the new year, so maybe this coupon is a way to get people to come in and spend more than the required $10 for the penny item.

      • Traci M.

I too, am Not excited over this coupon…..not much of a ‘value’ in my opinion….I like the penny item better – at least you could donate to a food shelter or church if needed !!!! At my Publix, the cashiers were always talking that Publix wanted to replace the penny item but did not know how to do it….maybe this is the start of ‘replacing’ the penny item……just wondering……..

        • Val

I hope that they don’t replace the penny item. It is my main reason for shopping on Mondays.

          • Jen

I’m with you guys. We don’t have kids, so I rarely spend more than $50 each week. I hope this doesn’t become a permanent thing, but I guess $5/$50 is better than nothing as long as it’s before coupons…

        • They have done this $5 off $50 for the last couple of years during the holiday in the Charleston area.

          • Oh, I hope it is only a holiday thing. I like penny items WAY beter!

            • I agree I like the penny item way better too. AND since I just bought $221 worth of groceries for $90 we are good to go for a while, BUT I did need a Christmas Ham and Pulix has some Smithfield Shank Hams for $.99/lb. I decided to go ahead and buy meat and use my $5 coupon.

      • Marc

I don’t think I’ve spent $50 at any grocery/drug store since starting to coupon. So I’m mildly disappointed as well!

        • ashley benz

The $50 is before coupons. I always give my $5 off $(whatever domination) first to make sure it gets taken off. My Publix is pretty good about taking those coupons off even if its at the bottom of the pile.

      • morgan

According to my manager… They are replacing the penny item with a $ off amount AND moving it to Wednesdays…

      • Misty

This is a helpful coupon for those of us whose Publix’s do not accept Rite Aid $ off $$ coupons. So I’m excited! :)

    • krks

Jessica, my store will not allow me to get more than one penny item or split up transactions. They also have suppressed the doubling on internet coupons that state “no doubling or tripling.” I’m still very grateful for the deals they offer, and I’m grateful they are so respectful when they tell me of coupon changes. Merry Christmas, friends! :)

      • Jessica

Thanks krks…I just added our xmas ham to the list so I will just do 1/2 my shopping today and 1/2 tomorrow. Luckily for me my Publix is just down the road.

    • Heidi

I’m from central Florida and we don’t get a Publix ad in our papers, so we won’t get this $5 off $50. However, I just got a $5 off $50 sent to me, so it all works out!

      • How did you get this sent to you? I also live in Central Fl. Thanks for the info!

    • JudyP

Funny I didn’t know that Florida didn’t have the penny item so I asked my Publix manager. He didn’t know anything about it. I did get the $5 off coupon in the last flyer. Can’t wait to use it.

    • Jaime

Not all Publix shoppers get to use the crazy competetitor Qs like some places (Rite aid, CVS, etc.) so we’ll take all the $5/$50’s they want to give us!

      • Susan

My Publix will allow me to use the Publix Q with a CVS and/or Wags Q! I’m in N. FL.

        • Carolin

What part of N FL do you live? I live in Jacksonville. My Publix won’t let me use a publix and a comp coupon when it comes to the 5/50 coupons.

          • Jen

I’m also in Jax and it all depends on the cashier (and the store). I always throw a couple in and sometimes they honor it and sometimes they don’t and I don’t make a fuss about it. I have found that the Publix at Queen’s Harbor is the best at honoring the coupons…any coupon for that matter. They seem to be very kind there. Too bad it is 30 minutes from where I live but it is near my kid’s school so somtimes I plan to shop there when I have lots of coupons.

    • Kelly

Per my Publix today (Cumming, GA), they are moving their penny item to Thursdays come January. I wonder if they will do another of these Q’s next week???

      • morgan

That’s so funny because my manager said they were moving it to Wednesdays here in South Carolina! I wonder if they are going to do different days for different areas…

    • ~*Brook*~

Yeah!! This is a fabulous “penny item”. My Publix changed their policy at the beginning of December. Only Kroger coupons now! :( This coupon will definitely help with my savings!!

    • $5 off $50 coupon is in Saturday’s Orlando Sentinel.

    • Has anybody found the $5/$50 Q in the Lakeland ledger, Tampa Tribune or the St. Pete papers? And if so what day?

    • Mary

I didn’t see the $5/$50 in the Atlanta Sunday Paper. Did anyone else see it?

      • Mary

Sorry, I looked again and found it on the back page!

        • Kathy

What page, because I can’t seem to find it. This is the best scavenger hunt ever!

    • Susan

I did not see it in Sundays Chatt Times Free Press. Did anyone else get it?

      • Tina M

It is on the very back page of the Publix Sunday insert

    • can you use the 5 off 50 to buy a gift card such as spend 25 in groceries and then buy a 25 bp gas card. to save 5 cause i just bought groceries yest. and dont really need but a few essentials that i always save to make about 15 for the penny item

    • Damien B

We never spend $50 at Publix in a week even before coupons… except that one time we bought the $50 BP gift card for $10 off… now we do save enough to put us over $50, but that is including the sales savings… our total before coupons is usually somewhere around $30-$40.

    • Can I use the $5 off 50 Publix, and the Piggly Wiggly $10 off $50 in one transaction? I live in the Charleston SC area.

      • Dawn

Yes! Just got back from Publix on Dorch. road. They let me use both. Saved $74.39 Spent $5.18!

        • Angela, in Summerville, SC

    • Sue

I shop at the Goose Creek Publix and would like to know the same thing!!
I have never used a $ off total Q from another store at my Publix, altho I read on here that they do take them.

      • The Trolley Rd. store in Summerville will take competitors coupons, but I am not sure they will do the Publix $5, and the Piggly Wiggly $10. If anyone tries this let us know. I will not be shopping until tomorrow.

        • Dawn

They will take both the Pig coupon and the Publix for an automatic $15 off. Just got back from a great trip!:)

      • Katie

I don’t know for sure, but last night at the Goose Creek Publix, a lady in front of me had a $5 off coupon from CVS and another $X off from a grocery store, and the cashier (who was nice about it and ended up doing it) said there were told not to take more than one of those types of coupons.

      • ashley benz

I went to this store this morning and they honored a 5 off 25 Rite Aide and the 5 off 50 Publix coupon. So I am assuming they would take The Pig coupon as well as the Publix coupon. I hope this helps

    • Tabitha

does anyone know how to fix the coupon printer installer. both of my computers have successfully downloaded it and it wont print anything out. some of the other websites say please be patient and its been an hour and nothing printed.

      please help im going crazy

      • Cheryl

drop down box should show up for you to “enable an add on” (at the top of the screen) if it’s not showing up you might have to enable pop up adds to add the active x add on (you just have to click on the drop down box that appears at the top of your screen, then it’ll successfully load)…hope that helps!

    • Andrea

I am THRILLED about this week’s penny item! Anytime I can save $5 its a great thing. I’m going to buy $5 worth of groceries for my local food bank. When you pair this coupon with mfg coupons, I will be able to buy a lot of things for $5. I’m very thankful for this penny item!

    • Stacey

Last Sunday my cashier told me that the penny item was getting discontinued, but I didn’t hear any mention of it on any Publix/couponing blogs, so I figured I just had a grumpy cashier (I had 2 transactions, so I could use 2 penny item coupons). Then I mentioned it to the girl helping me take my bags to the car, and she said that corporate decided to do this because of people abusing it. Has anyone else heard anything like this?

I was shopping at the Publix at the corner of Dallas Hwy/Mars Hill in Powder Springs (GA), if that makes any difference.

      • lynn

i shop in Prattville,Alabama and my Publix has had to stop accepting a lot of competitor coupons, like the rite aid $5 off coupon becuase people were abusing it and i think the penny one too. i was so mad because that was the first time i had on to use and then was told that they could not accept it anymore. i was more upset with the people that caused the problem than with publix, they had to make a business decision, i get it, but it hurt everyone else.

    • Linda

My paper sucked this week no coupons and publix ad!

    • Lena

My normal favorite lead cashier said today that she heard the penny item day was going to change (possibly next week) to Thursdays and would only be for one day. Our new ad starts on Thursdays in my region too. Has anyone else heard this?

      • morgan

Yes, I heard the same thing, only it was Wednesday in our area. The cashiers are taking major issue with it since that is also senior discount day…

    • JoAnna

Nothing found in the Palm Beach Post in Sundays paper..
      anyone see something I missed??

    • Does the coupon specify that it must be used Sunday or Monday or can it be used any time this week?

      • constance

I just used my coupon, but if I remember correctly, it was good until the 24th.

      • Stephanie

IF I am not mistaking I believe it said it was good the 19th -24th. It has been used so I am not 100%.

    • Danyelle

      Hi Jenny!

I just thought you would like to know that, while waiting to check out yesterday, I overheard one of the managers at the Rice Creek Publix (on Lee Rd and Hardscrabble) talking about and praising Southern Savers as well as recommending the site to customers. It is always nice to receive praise…especially where it is so deserved. Thank you for all of your hard work!

    • Annie

So mad! I wasn’t going to buy papers this week bc no coupon inserts, but when I found out that the penny item was the $5/50 I went to Publix to get a paper. And guess what? There was no Publix insert included!! I’m guessing someone swiped the insert with the coupon. I am going back to Publix tomorrow to see if they will give me the insert with the coupon without having to buy another paper!!!

      • Jennifer

We didn’t get an insert either!!! Bummer!!

      • lynn

at the publix where i shop they have sale papers but never have the inserts with the penny coupon, it is annoying sometimes, but they usually will give me the penny item coupon if i just ask.

      • Jessica

The $5/$50 coupon was in the AJC newspaper Publix insert (on back page of flyer). They did not put the coupon on the in store flyers you have to buy a paper. I needed lots of things this week so I did buy 3 papers for $3.50 so received $16.50 off my 3 seperate transactions. Going for my 3rd trip this mornig :)

      • Annie

This is why I love Publix! I went to the CS desk to ask about the $5/50 since it didn’t come in my paper, and they didn’t have any left over, but the manager went to search the store for one and he told me to go and shop. A few minutes later he came to find me and gave me his own $5/50 coupon! So nice!! It made me so happy!

    • Christy

Anyone try using the $15 off $50 World Market coupon? Publix on Trolley in Summerville took the $20 off $50 right before Thanksgiving as a competitor. I actually had more than $50 that day because I bought a $20 turkey breast and a few more extras for Thanksgiving. The way I looked at it, I got my turkey breast for free!! I am planning on going there tomorrow and getting another turkey breast and a ham for Christmas with my parents Monday night and Christmas day with just the 3 of us (as well as the sale items and some produce) so I’m sure I will be past $50 again.

      • AWS

        Used mine there today!

      • Angela, in Summerville, SC

        **DEAL ALERT**
The Publix on Old Trolley in Summerville had a $2.00 coupon on the package for the Sorrento Stringsters Cheese, 24 oz, which are already on sale for $4.99. Paired with the $1 store coupon in the Winter Savings booklet, that makes for 1 1/2 lb. of string cheese for $2!

Also , they took my $15 World Market, my $10 Piggly Wiggly and my $5 Publix coupons in the same transaction–I had almost $350 worth of groceries in my cart, and I paid $107!

    • Christy

I wonder about this Thursday penny item thing. I remember a long time ago before I couponed seriously, the penny items was Monday only, not Sunday.

If it is on Thursday, does that mean the coupon will be in the Thursday paper? I hope not because we only buy the paper on Sundays–I usually get it on my way home from church at a CVS run using overage from coupons and ECBs on one of my transactions. We cannot get the paper delivered on only Sundays! The “weekend” package is Thursday – Sunday which we just think is a waste of trees when we don’t have time to read it anyway and can read on-line if we do have a bit of time! I really don’t want to have to worry about picking up a paper on Thursdays too! Maybe it will be in the flier that shows up in our mailbox on Wednesdays????

    • wendy

My coupon is good through the 24th.

    • Melissa

I had a wonderful shopping trip at publix today! I used the 5/50 on top of all my other coupons and ended up spending 66.00 and saving 92.00. I was thrilled. The publix that I usually visit is closing for good effective Christmas Eve and they actually had an employee walking around explaining this to everyone and handing out coupons for future purchases. The main coupon they handed out is a 5/25, so if you live in the Murfreesboro area, it would be worthwhile to visit the Publix on Memorial and Northfield and see about picking up some coupons!

    • Carey

The checkout girl in Lexington, SC told me today that the penny saver was going to start being on Wednesdays only starting the first week of January and that the Sunday inserts would have coupons similar to today’s (eg $5 off $50)

    • lynn

our paper does not include the parade magazine so i missed out on the craisins coupon……maybe next time

    • KC

I work for Publix and thought you all might like to know that Publix is phasing out the penny item. It will be moved from Sunday/Monday to Wednesday/Thursday and will only be available one day instead of two starting January 1 2010. The plan is to get rid of the penny item (no date has been given on this). Publix does not plan on running weekly ads with $5off of $50 at this time. The reason for the changes are the high volumes of coupons received is causing many stores to no longer make a profit.

      • Val

The only coupons that would cause the store to loose money would either be their own coupons or competitor coupons because those do come out of the profit, but all legit manufacture coupons are paid back to the store plus a handling fee. I realize that there are people out there that will abuse the system, and stores need to protect themselves, but I also think that if a store has a policy that THEY created and then people use it, they shouldn’t be surprised that someone may walk away with something for almost nothing out of pocket. The store is still getting money back for items I purchased. My mom was at Publix the other day and went to get a rain check and the customer service lady told her and another customer that the reason they were out of the items they wanted was “because couponers come in and buy them, and will get $150 worth of groceries for $40.” Sometimes I think people are misinformed and feel as though we are “stealing” from the store, but if someone used $60 dollars worth of Manufacture coupons on that transaction, that is money the store gets back and it’s more like the groceries cost $100 (plus a handling fee). If I didn’t use any Manufacture coupons and went in to purchase something and used cash, the store actually gets less money than had I walked in and used coupons. Believe me that 8 cent handling fee adds up to big bucks when you consider how many coupons are coming thru. I love Publix and will continue to shop there as long as they have B1G1 deals. I can not go to a big box store and get the same deals. My spending has been cut in half at least.

        • Traci M.

The cashiers at my Publix always have told me that the penny item is a pure loss for Publix, the coupon is a ‘Publix coupon’, they don’t get nothing back from that. Also the managers have always statede that if they couldn’t find anything to replace the penny item, they would ‘discontinue’ it for profit reasons…..that really is bad for us couponers who look forward to the item each week and if we don’t need it, buy it anyway for churches or a food bank.

          • I do love shopping at Publix as well as Bi-lo, however, the penny coupon item is majority of the time what bring me to shop at Publix on Sunday or Monday over my Bi-lo. The idea for the penny item coupon is to drive traffic into the stores which it obviously does.

    • Lee

My brother is a manager at Publix and he said the Penny Item promo will be moved to Wednesdays (Thursdays depending on where you live) and it will only last one day. Too many people abused the once very generous coupon policy and penny item policy and they have to scale back.

      • j.hayes

It is sad that others took advantage of publix kindness. I was informed that publix was cutting back on taking compter’s coupons. However, the company helped me through difficult times. During that period, I forced myself to shop at publix only using managr’s and their coupon. I prepared myself for the changes. In my opinion, even if they don’t accept other’s coupon, Publix still have the best deals. Love Them

        • Amy B.

Honestly, I don’t think Publix was doing the penny item out of “kindness”. Like any company, they are doing it to drive traffic to the store and earn a profit. If the program is no longer doing that, they change it.

However, I do agree that coupon shoppers have to be careful that they are following the policies correctly. Obviously, there has been abuse in addition to an increase in normal coupon use.

    • misa

Can somebody help me to find $10 gift card with purches of $50 at Earth Fare? I printed it last week from here but cannot find it now.

      • misa

I am sorry. I am looking for the coupon for free $10 gift card with purches of $50 or more. It was under new grocery store coupons last Wendsday if I remember right. But I do not know how to find stuff if it is not under Recent Posts. Thanks a lot

        • Teri

Try the Dec. archives (on the right) or maybe under “deals by store”.

    • It’s good through December 24th!!!

    • Christy

I went to Trolley Road Publix (Summerville) this morning. I used the $15/$50 World Market Coupon so they did not also take the $5/50 Publix, but $15 is better than $5, so I’m not complaining! I spent $60–that included a $17 turkey breast for “Christmas dinner” tonight with my parents, a $5 ham for Christmas dinner on Christmas day for just the 3 of us, and $12 Sam Adams WinterFest for tonight’s dinner—3 big ticket items that would normally not be part of a grocery run! The rest was just stocking up on sale items and some fruit for this week–Even though I spent $60, I got those 3 big ticket items and spent $60, saved $80, so all in all it was a good trip—would’ve been even better with a penny item thrown in—not sure if I will want to shop on Thursdays! Sundays usually work for me and an occasional Monday!

    • Sarah

Not sure where to post this, but here is a link for a $1 off Dunkin Donuts bag coffee – if you hit your back button a couple of times after it prints you can print it twice. Also a link for a free sample bag of Dunkin Donuts bag coffee.

    • Lisa

I’m in South FL and I got the $5 off $50 in the Sunday paper. Our normal Publix ad comes in Wednesday’s paper and a small Publix insert comes in Sunday’s paper. I never look at that one, but pulled it out just to check for the coupon and there it was on the back! Thanks a bunch for the heads up!

    • I was very happy to find it in the Sun Sentinel (South Florida Newspaper)!

    • Chloe

My local Publix has stopped taking Target coupons! Now they only take competitor coupons from other grocery stores like Kroger or Food Lion. I’ve heard that some other Publix stores in my area (Nashville TN) still take Target coupons but I’ll call & verify it with the store manager before I drive somewhere else. Just wanted to give you all a heads-up so you don’t get burned in the checkout line like I did… but I spent $10 and saved $73 so I’m still pretty happy with today’s shopping trip. Have a great holiday everyone!

    • Ashley

I think they ought to keep the penny item, but maybe make it after a $20 purchase. That would be okay with me, and so would only one day.

    • Tammy

Just called the my publix in AL. They said corporately the penny item is changing come January, but no decisions have been made. They are still thinking over several ideas.

    • Sherri

FYI my $5 off $50 Publix coupon says its good thru the 24th
