From my understanding, when a bar code on a coupon begins with 5, it will double at stores that double. Also, when the first 5 digits on the coupon bar code match the first 5 digits of the product bar code, then the coupon will work for that item, even if the picture/description of item is not the same.
      Am I correct?
Thanks to anyone who can help with my question. :)

    • thrifty in c-town

Yes. I have found that several of the printable coupons will print out and state that they do not double or triple but if the 5 is there, it doubles regardless. The cashier would have to override it to make it not double.

    • Angela W

Bonnie – I think that you are correct. Bar codes beginning with 9 will not double. The others do double, even if the coupon states “do not double”.
I’ve tested the bar code first 5 digits theory a bit… getting the girly shaving cream instead of the guy kind on the picture. Nothing too crazy though. It’s worked each time – even using $1 off Pepperidge Farm specialty crackers Q on Goldfish crackers.

Still looking for the Family is its own Reward booklets in the Cobb/Paulding Area of Atlanta. Has anyone else in the area found them?

    • Emily

My local PUblix had Juicy Juice as the penny item today!

    • Chantelle

My Publix (Trussville, AL outside of Bham) told me today that you CAN NOT stack a competitor Q with a manu Q… total bummer. Luckily she had only rang up most of my Q’s….she noticed b/c I had done the BOGO on the Ritz crackers so I had 2 manu and 2 target Qs. It’s very disappointing though, if I can’t do that I won’t save nearly as much money there!

    • Katherine

I used target and manu Qs on the Ritz and Kraft cheese with no problems. I just give all of the store(publix and competitor) together then all of the manu Qs together. Most of the time the cashier doesn’t realize that coupons are stacked that way. I separate them because store/competitor coupons have to be manually entered and it saves time if they are all together. I tell them all of the others are manu Qs and should just scan.

    • Tina

Chantelle, the same thing happened to me the other day. I was bummed. I emailed Publix and the district manager called me. He said that I should be able to do this. So, now I have no idea what to do.

    • JMR

Today’s Birmingham News has a $5 off a $35 purchase in the main part of the newspaper.

    • Alicia

Found out today that when the register beeps from having more coupons than the number of items that the manager can easily override. Happy to report that once again, my Publix was very kind to me. The cashier was skeptical at first, but kept checking to make sure my items matched and the expiration was good, and she relaxed and started to ask me about some of the deals. Taking full advantage of free Cover Girl lip products (with overage!) and eyeshadows. Plus, used today’s buy ritz get wheat thins free with BOGO and $1 off ritz coupons to get 8 boxes of crackers for $3.58!

Chantelle, I shop at the Publix in Trussville and have never had any problem stacking coupons. Most of the cashiers and sometimes the front end manager aren’t aware of the coupon policy, they just try to make up their own policies. If you have that problem ask for the store manager and make sure it’s the STORE manager and not just the front end manager.

    • Chantelle, Trussville Publix is where I shop also! I have stacked store & manu coupons many times. I did have one cashier who gave me hard time, and I told her to talk to the manager. She did and she took my coupons. So don’t be afraid to ask for the manager. :)

    • Lauren

I am looking throught the B’ham news Sunday paper and have not found a Publix Sunday ad with a penny item coupon. I found the $5/$35 one though. (Yeah!) But no penny item. Where are you finding these??

    • Missy

Hi! Im new here.. and doesnt know about the mystery penny item..how can i avail for the penny item? do i have to include it in my transaction or there will be a coupon for that item that the cashier will issue after my transaction? thanks

    • Teresa

Y’all, Akaway on coupons.com has print limit reached. Alaway web site has one [sorry don’t know how to link]

    • Teresa

Missy, ask the cashier for the penny item at the register. My store has the items at the front of the store and you just get one at the register.

    • JMR

The penny coupon in the Birmingham News is always in the Publix circular. It is on the front in the bottom right corner.

    • Chantelle

Well, I did tell them that I’ve done that many times and the manager (not sure if front end or store manager) walked over and said they have had a lot of coupon changes in the last week and that was one of their new policies. She said they’ve had trouble with people using counterfeit coupons, etc and they are having to change their couponing policies. I was really bummed, but I think I will email Publix and see if I get a response.

    • Tiffani

Chantelle, is this store on Deerfoot?

    • Jennifer

Is there some kind of cycle of the penny items? Someone had predicted that it would be the window cleaner. I really care more for the food items than cleaning or household because I don’t have any more room for that stuff.

Jenny if I keep getting these great deals I’m going to have to get a bigger house just to store all this stuff!!!! lol

    • MiniMidgMom

The $5 off $35 coupon was printed on the back page of a local Throw-away here near Nashville – it’s a full page with light green print talking about an event at Publix and the coupon is at the bottom. Ours was a last page ad. It expires the 24th, the day of the event. If my neighbor had not told me about it then I would not have looked at that paper.

Our store kept the window cleaner as the penny item, we are donating it and other freebies we don’t want to a domestic violence shelter near us. Ronald McDonald house also appreciate any donation, no matter how small.

I accidently gave the cashier 2 sets of coupons for Energizer batteries but only had one pack b/c of the limit- when the register beeped she called over the manager to over-ride but only said that I had more coupons than items, not that I had $4 in coupons for items I wasn’t buying. The manager put it through, then I saw what happened when I checked my receipt. When I went back in the manager said don’t worry about it, but I got the second pack of batteries anyway b/c we use a lot of them.I was thrilled that they let me use 2 coupons from their flyer instead of limiting me to one.

Yesterday I got a tank of propane, 2 8 packs of batteries, 1 box of Ritz, 1 box of Wheat Thins, NY breadsticks, 2 grill mates, 1 Montreal steak seasoning, 1 bottle rubbing alcohol, 1 Publix window cleaner for only $2.76 more than I would have paid for just the propane!

      My Publix rocks!

    • Chantelle

Tiffani – Yes, it is the Publix on Deerfoot.

    • Missy

The Goose Creek, SC, Publix is replacing the penny item with Publix water,

    • Jennifer

Here is the link to the penny item spreadsheet, looks like this week will probably be pasta sauce.

    • .Jennifer

Thank you other Jennifer for that link!

I do donate a lot of stuff to the women’s shelter too but I still like the food freebies better! We don’t really eat out and I pack our lunches and breakfasts (we both either eat in the car or at our desks) so all the food things really help.

That reminds me though… my box is just about full so time to take it to the shelter. I just love that Southern Savers helps me give more back!

    • I am with you Jennifer. If I cannot use it or have plenty of something, I know that there is someone that can! That is one of the great things about couponing….I am not only helping my wallet, but other people as well!!!

    • Paula

If you don’t have a coupon for the mystery item please check with your customer service staff when you go in to the store before you pick up your .01¢ and find out at the register that you must have a coupon in order to purchase it. Our stores policy is No coupon than No item. We do not keep extra coupons to give out either. Some stores may do this and others may not, so please check before getting all the way to the register and then getting upset.
We also require the $10.00 purchase before coupons.
The penny coupon is on our ad in the newspaper. They usually only have the ads in store on the first Sunday of the month (but not always). The rest of the month the ad does not contain the coupon.

    • Wendy

I used a coupon last week on a BOGO at Publix that would give me about .30 overage, but the cashier said, “Oh no, I’ve got to change that to the amount the item cost. You can’t get extra.”
Am I wrong or doesn’t the manufacturer pay the full face value of the coupon? And if so, why is the grocery store taking the extra .30 of my coupon?
My Publix lately has become the coupon Natzi’s and I am very careful to comply with all the rules of couponing. But they make me feel like I’m a thief!!

    • Angela Dephouse

The penny item at my Publix yesterday was Duncan Hines Brownie Mix, and the manager let me get 2 for $.02 with just 1 coupon. With the rainchecks I used I got $268.55 in groceries for $103.98. I even managed to load it all into one cart, which is pretty impressive because I was shopping with 4 kids (ages 4 months to 5 years)!

    • Chantelle

Angela, I’m just impressed that you were able to find and put that much in your grocery cart with 4 kids with you! I love my kids but they have no patience for grocery shopping and I get frustrated with them when we try to go. They run and act silly and get too loud and I just want to pull my hair out and run out of the store! Kudos to you!

Anyone in Columbia find the Family and Summer coupon booklets?
I took copies of the front logos to customer service at the Gervais store today, and they did not have any.
The cashier really scrutinized my coupons today, scanning each Q right along with the item. He was nice about it though.
I got some great deals on the last day of the sale….
Just can’t seem to locate those darn coupon booklets!

    • Michelle

Does anyone know where to find the Pop-Tarts coupon on the Pop-Tarts site? I have searched high and low and still can’t find it even though it is linked on here as a printable. ARgh! I need to stock up! Thanks! :)

    • Chantelle

Just as an update to me being told I couldn’t stack coupons…the store manager called me today. I submitted a comment on the publix website on Monday. He said that yes you can stack competitor and manu Qs. he said they have had some concerns about counterfeit coupons and there has been some confusion with his staff. He was very nice and we talked for almost 10 mintues. I told him both the cashier and manger at the desk (front end manager) were very polite. He said if they say anything again just to come to the manager’s office and he will help me take care of it. He said they would be typing up some rules on coupons in the next few days and going over it with each cashier and person who works the front to hopefully avoid any future confusion.

Just wanted to let everyone know! Thanks for your advice about putting a comment on the website
