OMG – Staples is just about as addictive as the drugstore runs… Thanks for the heads-up Jenny – I know what I’ll be doing on Monday. :D

      • Heather Liafsha

I’m so glad someone else thinks office supplies are addicting as well! I was beginning to feel a little crazy.

by the way, the staples store at harbison (SC) is INCREDIABLY helpful and nice. I was there yesterday and was getting very frustrated that I couldn’t find what I needed. The assistant manager took my list and walked me around the entire store. And they also will accept EXPIRED rewards points (up to about a month old)!! It turned out to be a great shopping trip and I saved $201.10!!!

    • Abi Moose

Love Love Love the Staples Rewards Program. I was able to “buy” my son a Nikon camera with the memory card and the warranty package for christmas with a check from my Staples rewards. The total out of pocket for me was: Staples ended up issuing me a coupon for $1.33. The level of customer service they give at the South Windemere store in Charleston, SC is awesome.

      • Michele

I would love to know how you were able to do that. I would like to get a new camera, too, but can’t afford it!

    • Robin

Binder clips make the best cheapie chip clips in the world.

      • Becky

Agreed! We use binder clips for our chip and frozen veggie bags all the time :)

        • Lisa

Actually, I think clothes pins are a lot cheaper than binder clips. You do have to be a little more careful to be sure that they are secured, but they are a much cheaper alternative. (I know, not cheaper than free….but generally speaking!) :-) For me, I am careful how much I buy of items that give me the money back in rewards (not so much with Walgreens and CVS as I will use more toiletries than office supplies). There may not be $25 or $50 worth of stuff I really need at Staples in the coming days. There is no guaranty that there will be items I can roll these over into that will give me the money back by check. For Walgreens and CVS bucks I can always buy toilet paper or detergent if there aren’t other deals to be had and my rewards or bucks are expiring.

    • Virginia

Okay, I am unfamiliar with Staples rewards but this sounds intriguing – are these ‘instant’ rewards like at CVS and Walgreens, or is it a mail-in-rebate type thing?

      • Meg

No, they send you a quarterly check that can be spent at Staples (sign up for Staples rewards). Be careful…they do expire! I use Staples for printer ink, so it makes sense to get the deals. If you don’t shop there, it may be more difficult to justify spending the money on the “freebies.”

        • MarySC

I agree. I like the Staples easy rebates way better since you truly get the money back in the form of a check. I bought a ton of batteries and will need to figure out what to buy with the rewards.

I have gotten used to the very low prices for ink on eBay or Amazon, so hate to pay so much for it at Staples.

          • Dianne

Ah, but it’s like Jenny says, it’s better to spend the “monopoly money” than cold hard American currency! Buy the ink with the Staples rewards, especially if you are having a hard time finding what to buy there!

          • Lisa

I also find the ink for my printer at least $3 per cartridge cheaper at Costco than at Staples and don’t want to buy excessive amounts of “free” items that return my money to me in Rewards, only to spend those Rewards on more expensive ink.

      • Leigh

Virginia, make sure you have a Staples rewards card (free) the rebates will be submitted through that. If you don’t already have one get one at purchase. :)

        • Virginia

Thanks for the replies. If I had ‘free money’ to spend there, I would most definitely spend it on ink – my printer takes 6 ink cartridges (1 black and 5 separate colors), so they all run empty at different times and it seems like I’m constantly buying ink w/ all the coupon printing I do…. LOL

          • Anne Marie

Don’t forget to recycle your ink and toner cartridges too. They will send you a check for tose too. $3 per cartride.

    • Any idea when to expect the Rewards certificates from the batteries purchased in December? I have yet to receive mine, and would like to use them on these deals!

      • Dianne

Got mine in the mail this week in metro Atlanta.

        • Amy

I still have not received mine either. I live in South Florida.

      • Angela, in Summerville, SC

I was just wondering about that. Haven’t received mine yet either.

      • Marc

I just spoke with customer service and unless you are a ‘premier member’, the rewards will not be sent until next week some time.

    • Sally

I doubt the January rewards will be out this week. Probably towards the end of the month?

    • amy

Does anyone know how often these freebie deals happen and how long until the rewards typically expire. I am wondering if I would be able to roll them like ECBs at CVS.

      • Leah

They usually expire pretty fast but the cashier at my Staples told me that they will always honor them. So just ask one of the associates at your Staples what their policy is. I love shopping at Staple, they are always very friendly and helpful. HTH

      • Becky

If I’m remembering correctly, the reward certificates I got the last time I brought in empty ink cartridges were good for 2 months after issue. I was able to use them when I bought batteries last month. I was also hoping that the battery ones would come in time to use on this month’s deals. Fingers crossed!

    • Sally

I stay away from Staples rewards because I don’t spend enough there. I’m pretty sure you have to have more than $10 to get a quarterly check mailed. So if you got the pens, and that’s all you had in your rewards account, you wouldn’t get a check in February, I believe? I think it defers to next month or quarter?

      I like their rebates though. I do 3-4 a year–like last week’s gel-pens– and never have had a problem.

I’d like to get a few thin-size “Avery” binders on page 7 of their flyer. It says “Save $2, and limit 5 rebates but doest offer any other details, like prices?

      • MarySC

I think that to get rewards on ink and paper there is a minimum purchase, but for special deals (like the batteries, or the backpacks in August)there isn’t. It can be confusing, especially since these special things don’t show up in your rewards account like the paper and ink do!

Somewhere in the ad it said the rewards items were at regular price. You could check the prices on Staples.com.

    • Jenny

Side question about their rewards program: I just started it with the battery deal about 6 weeks ago and was wondering when I would receive the first check for this?? Thanks!

    • Crystal

I went on-line to purchase and this is what is says:

Get 100% back in Staples Rewards
      on select office supplies
      Offer expires 01/16/2010

Limit 2 per customer. While supplies last.

Does this mean 2 total deals or 2 per item? I don’t want to order $50 worth of “deals” if I am only going to get rewards on 2 of them. Thanks for your help!!!

      • Kelley

Are you trying to spend $50 to get the free shipping? According to their website, rewards customers get free shipping. Not 100% as I am new to Staples rewards!

      • bridget

No that means 2 per item/deal.

    • Bessie&Riley

I <3 Staples! But I especially love the Staples in Summerville, SC. The rewards program is genius. I use my rewards card all the time and get a nice check in the mail which keeps me coming back for more.

    • I’m a little confused on when you would recieve your staples rewards if you buy the items that are supposedly *FREE. I wouldn’t mind buying a few and then using them for ink. I also have some ink cartridges to turn in. What is the difference in the rewards you get back with the free items and the $3 rewards you get with ink cartridges?

      • Bessie&Riley

Ink recycling rewards come back at the beginning of the following month. Rewards for Free items and your 10% back for ink, paper, and copy center purchases adds up and is paid out once every three months.

    • Meg

Be sure to take the ad with you if you plan to get the DOLLAR DEALS. This is in the paper, or can be printed from staples.com. They require you have the coupon from the flyer for purchases (Titusville, FL)

A friend of mine went this morning and was denied, without coupon. They are not in the ad at the store either.

    • Mark

Went this morning and used all the dollar deal coupons from the ad in the paper only, had major problems with them redeeming them all. Coupon states limit 2 per customer on each coupon. Manager said it should say limit 2 coupons per customer, Got 16 items for $1 each (8 coupons, 2 items per customer) after 30 minutes of overrides, then tried to use my recycle rewards to pay and that wouldn’t go through either. usually very happy with Staples, however, this trip took way too long…

    • I went last night, and was so excited. Cash out was $14 and change, then the rebates started coming out of the register. They amounted to 10.00. So, I spent $4’s for pens, a notebook, copy paper, and tape. They did not have everything so I will make sure that I go today to get all the deals. Most excited.

    • Kelly

Where can I go to find out more about this rewards program? I don’t have a Staples nearby, but would love to take advantage of this if it would work online. Does anyone know? I appreciate any help!

      • Jenn

I just signed up for my rewards card online today. You simply enter your information and submit it. After completion, you can print your card and/or use your # online :)

    • Kim

Are the ‘rebates’ instant and the ‘rewards’ they mail? Also, if they mail the rewards check for say $25.00 – do I have to spend it all at once like Riteaids Gift of Savings checks, or can I spend it over time as long as it hasn’t expired?

      • Bessie&Riley

You get two chances to spend your check before it expires. Basically, if you go in with your check and don’t spend the full amount, they will print you out a coupon at the register for the remaining amount. When you return with that coupon, it must be used in full.

    • Karen Smith

My low priced things that you said are $1….were $2 for me….still a great deal but in nashville….its a bit more :(

    • Tracee

A heads up- hold onto your receipt until you are sure it is credited to your account correctly. Somehow the free battery deal back in November didn’t show up in my rewards account, but Staples corrected the problem. Luckily I still had my receipt that showed my rewards card was used and the correct items were purchased.

      • Meg

I am having that problem now with the AVERY binders from last week. Calling CS today to fix the problem.

        • Rita

A few years ago, I got BADLY burned by a Staples “Easy” rebate (to the tune of $50) and I swore up and down I’d never buy anything from Staples again that involved a rebate of any kind. Well, last week I needed binders and I saw the Avery binder deal. I can get binders of that same type for around $4 at Target, but against my better judgement, decided to go to Staples and pay 10.99 for them and HOPE for no problems with my rewards check being issued. Well, guess what!!!! It’s showing a ZERO rewards balance for me. The binders are showing up that I purchased them, but no rewards are showing up. I just sent CS an email about it. The last time, I called NUMEROUS times and sent emails and sent copies of everything and even offered to ship the empty printer box to them to show them that it was the correct item and they flat out refused to issue my $50 rebate and were VERY rude! Needless to say, these binders are still in the bag and if I don’t get my rewards check they WILL be returned. They are NOT going to get me for another $43.96!!!

          • jessica

I had a problem with 2 cases of paper I purchased not showing up in my account. I waited a couple weeks thinking it would just take awhile, then I called CS and they said that although they did not show up I would receive a check for them. I asked when I would get that check, and they gave me the time frame. I checked back to my online account several more times, and it still didn’t show up. But sure enough, I did receive the check! The CS rep told me that often the special rewards items do not show up online in your account, but they are kept track of separately. I have no idea if she was right, but since I did get my check, hopefully you will get yours!

            • Rita

I sure hope so Jessica. I wouldn’t be nearly as aprehensive about it if I had not of been burned by them BADLY before. I can’t understand how any company can get away with advertising “rebates” that they don’t honor even when you prove that you sent in everything right.

I sent in one for the Natural Dentist Mouthwash for $10 back in April or May of last year and I’m still waiting for that one. I’ve contacted the company two times with absolutely NO response at all. The good thing about it was that after Extra Bucks, I did not pay for the mouthwash to begin with so it’s not so bad. I’ve seen comments on here from others who had the same exact thing happen to them with the same rebate. I have copies of everything, but if they won’t contact me, it’s kinda hard to send it to them. LOL… Gotta love rebates. Why don’t they all just do it like CVS and be done with it. So much easier!

    • Sally

      “Are the ‘rebates’ instant ”
No, rebates done on-line take about 8 weeks. They send a card that can be cashed (like RiteAid). It’s an easy process but they don’t do rebates much.
I wish the “Rewards” program was the same, but then you wouldn’t be recycling the money back to “Staples”, would you?

    • Lynn

How long should I wait to receive my check from Dec? I’ve still yet to get mine and my friend has already gotten hers.

    • angie

thanks- im lovein the staples rewards- i use them to buy ink- which looks like my hubby will be useing alot of now that he went back to school.

    • Kate

To save even more money on office supply deals you could purchase a gift card for below face value on Ebay. I just looked and most have sold for at least $10 below face value.

    • Cindy B.

Since our local Staples is often out of the advertised specials, I ordered the “free” items online and had them shipped for free to the store. Now it will be easy to just pop in there and pick up my stuff without having to search all over the store for them. Plus, I used Ebates to get an extra 3% back on my order! :)
