I went to so many formals in high school and I never paid more than $30 for a gown because I would go in over the summer (after Prom, way before Homecoming!) to scout the clearance racks.

I too only shop for off season items and love TJ Maxx and Marshalls for any “need it now' items. I even bought my stylish file totes for coupon inserts from TJ Maxx (tote is 15.99 there and almost $40 at Nordstrom's). Closeout stores like Tuesday Morning has great (and cheap) finds too.

Scour the clearance racks AND do not avoid trying ANYthing on. You'd be really surprised at what looks great off the hanger. Also, don't discount clothing needing TLC (a tear by a seam, buttons, etc). You can usually fix this yourself and get an additional discount at the register.

my savvy shopping tip – if you find something you love, but it's in the wrong size – try it on anyway. Many times they have sized it wrong and it actually fits!

i buy most of my clothes out of season. also, yard sales are wonderful places to find name brand clothing items for pennies on the dollar. if i really need something, i can usually find a deal at Kohl's by using their store coupons and kohls cash promotions.

I always ask at the register for coupons. They will usually give you one. I never buy anything full price either.

Buy your kids' clothes at deep clearance prices at the end of the season – but a size bigger for the upcoming year. Saves me a TON!

I reccommend signing up for the TJMAXX, Marshalls credit card. Look for the deals…and then whenever you spend X amount of dollars ( Ican't remember exactly) they send you a $10 store credit. Kohls is also notorious for doing 10 off of 20 and then giving you a percentage off on top of that. I got a $850 1/2 carat diamond band for $150. IT was in the clearance section, I got 30% off and another $10 off. On top of that, they size it for free and it has a lifetime warranty.

Buy what you love and you'll have less clothes in your closet that you don't wear.

I always have a plan and agenda when shopping – clothing is no different. Go with a budget in mind and only purchase the items that you NEED not want. Try to always find a sale and coupon whenever possible to maximize your dollars. And most of all, have fun!

Just because something is on sale does NOT mean it will look good on you. Only spend your money on items that make you look and feel like a million bucks. Otherwise, you will never get your money's worth out of an item.

I buy all my kids' holiday outfits and dress shoes on eBay. Usually these have only been worn once or twice anyway and look new. (I usually shop for the Gymboree clothes because they look so great and resell well). Anyway, I rarely pay more than $20 total per child! After the holiday or special occassion, I relist on eBay and usually make as much or more back on them as what I originally paid for them.

Set a price point for yourself. For kid clothing, mine is 3 bucks for any single item (so a whole outfit for a kid would be at MAX $6). Then, whether I'm shopping new or used, I can tell if it's really a good deal or not! :)

I just learned about Sears' Children's Club. They said they will replace any item with an identical one in the same size if it's worn out. I haven't tried it out yet, but I plan to buy my oldest son's next pair of jeans there…he usually wears holes in the knees within a few months. If they get worn out then I can trade them in and use them for him longer, then for his little brothers as hand me downs.

Hit the consignment stores when they are having their season end sales. Buy a size larger and you have clothes for your kids for the next year.

My tip would be to really take care of your clothes by using the right temperature for each piece, wash with like colors, air dry if possible and don't over dry. Marshalls is a great place to find bargains on high end clothes and accessories! I once got an awesome Anne Taylor bag for $10 because it had a small rip on the inside … inside!!! I still have it five years later and it still looks like new PLUS I still get compliments on it! :D

If you see it at Marshalls and love it, buy it! Odds are it will not be there when you come back… that is why it is at Marshalls, great prices! :) Now at the mall, because of the high prices, it will be there when you come back! ;)

Talk to your close friends to see if any of them work at a clothing retail store. I have one that works @ Dillard and she holds the bras for me until they drop dirt cheap. I usually get them for less than $10. Than I have one that works @ Macy's. It's great when they have sales + employee discounts or friends & family nights! Got shirts & polos for the boys for $2.62 today! YAY!

If you see something you like, but are unsure of purchasing, pick it up anyway! Don't leave it and say I'll come back later and grab it…because it will be gone! I've lost many great finds this way. This is especially true when browsing clearance racks and at yard sales. You can't regret missing that great deal if you grab it and hold on to it. Worst case scenario…you decide you really don't want it and set it back down.

I try to stick to basic designs and styles and dress them up with accessories. The newer, trendy clothing tend to go out of style quicker. Also, keep a note pad in your purse reminding you about things you need in your wardrobe. You’re always ready for that unexpected sale.

We shop at consignment sales on the 1/2 off days for children's clothes. They grow out of them so fast that most of the time they are in great condition. With adult clothes, we shop at discount stores with coupons. The clothing lasts longer and is usually great quality. I buy my husband's jeans with coupons and can usually get a $50 pair for 1/2 that or less!!

I try and find pieces that coordinate easily with other things. But my oldest 2 daughters just got to the stage where they like”trendy”clothing so to make things fun and frugal we have a contest to see who can score the most for their money. They wear themselves out looking in every corner trying to find the best deals. They do pretty good sometimes too. Also don't be afraid to ask “is this the best price for this item”, often the manager will give a discount or at the least will clue you in on an upcoming sale!

After Target puts things on clearance and they don't sell, they often end up at our local Good will, still new with tags at hugely discounted prices! I have gotten everything from maternity clothes, to bedding to kiddie pools, floats, etc. this way! Check your Goodwill to see if they have a partnership with Target!

Don't be afraid to spend some dough on a great pair of jeans….I'm just waiting for the right pair of jeans

Never pay retail!

I try to buy a season ahead. For example, last fall I bought summer clearance one size up for my son. I just pulled out his summer clothes bin a few days ago, and he now has 12 pairs of shorts, 17 short sleeve shirts, and 4 pairs of sandals/ flip-flops, all purchased for less than $75 because I bought everything during “Off Season”.

I always wait about 5 or 6 weeks after I see a new shirt or pants I want, ive learned they typically go on sale or clearance after that. I also love to shop for winter coats when winter is ending and vice versa for summer. I am a clearance junkie

Even if something is dirt cheap, don't buy it if it doesn't work for you. If it doesn't fit your body or if the colors aren't right for you, save your money. Eventually you will find something at a great bargain that really works, and it will be the best kind of deal.

The thing that works best for me is having a twin sister who loves to hunt down the bargains and is willing to share in her good finds. If you don't have a true twin to share with- find someone of similar size and style and double your wardrobe for free!

I used to work part time at Marshalls so I would get an additional 10% off their already low prices! The only trick to that is you can not shop when you work… or else you won't have a paycheck. And a couple times a year, they would offer a weekend with 20% off for employees- so I would wait until those weekends to do any bigger shopping trips.

Shop clearance for the followng season! You'll be able to find GREAT deals for like 25% of the price.

I love a bargain better than anyone, but do not buy clothes just because they are bargains. Make sure you love the outfit and will really wear it. Otherwise, no matter how inexpensive it is, it really is no bargain at all.

My friends and I went to an 80's themed party not too long ago and we needed outfits. Sadly our mom's got rid of all their outfits (I don't blame them) so we had to find them some other way. Goodwill has also been one of my favorite stores so we went there. I ended up finding the most beautiful dress (maybe for that time) for $6. All of my friends also found theirs too. They usually have sales with colored tags that are half off which makes the deal even better! If I ever need a costume for anything, Goodwill is my first stop!

If you absolutely love the item AND it's a great value, buy multiples! I'm sure I'm not the only one that has a hard time finding a great fit. This way you will always have something that looks great for a long time to come!

My tip is to worry less about brands and more about comfort and style. You know you are getting a great deal because you are at Marshall's, so just search for your style and make sure it feels good to you and you feel good in it.

I think you need to buy nice quality basic items that match with many things (jeans, black or kakhi pants/skirts capris or shorts)…you can find quality basics like these at Marshalls or TJ Maxx. It is a better savings in the long run to invest a little more on quality basics that you will wear more frequently and possibly for several seasons. Then you can purchase less expensive trendy items that you won't need to last more than a season or so…you can also find these types of items at at Marshalls or TJ Maxx. This will keep you looking trendy and fresh while keeping you within your budget.

I set a limit…mine is very low, 10$ but I dont spend more than 10$ on any article of clothing. Unless its a special occassion. I have plenty of clothes and part of the fun of it is the hunt!

Check the clearance sections frequently. I have found shorts in the summer on clearance for .49 because they were from last year. Form a group of friends that will be on the look out for you when they shop. You can always reimburse them and it saves you a trip.

Head to the suit racks at these discount stores for some fabulous deals….the suit can be worn as a set, or separately. For a more casual look, often the top/jacket looks stylish with a nice pair of jeans and dressier shoes. The suits are great for church, work, and can be accessorized for evenings out…banquets, date nights, corporate functions. I have also found many great looking dressy tops at these stores for $10-$15, and I continually get compliments on them. They look much more expensive than the price I paid!

Always check Marshalls clearance racks at the end of a season for something to wear the next year…ie. end of winter for winter the next year!

I would say the best deals I get are when I shop early for events. For nearly all of my proms/homecomings I got my dresses for under $15 (90% off) by doing this! If you like it, it won't matter if it's from last year! I even found my sister's bridesmaid dresses this way, $10 each!

I also got an outfit for myself at one of Belk's after season clearance sales. They often mark things down to up to 75% off, plus they give out 15-20% off coupons. I got a pair of dress pants and a top, usually around $160 for $12! That's over 90% in savings!

I don't know if this is what you had in mind, but to save money on clothes you don't really need, don't look in the store. If there is a month that money is tight, the only way for me to not spend is to not “window shop” (it always leads to a purchase, for me).

I use a lot of the same tips already mentioned like starting at the back of the store (clearance section) but the key is to buy clothes in the same color family or complementary ones so that you can build a wardrobe, not just a bunch of stand alone outfits. The assessories are the key to really jazzin' up an outfit. I am a nut for jewelry (rings).

If you find something you like (like a style of shoes), check online for the item in other colors. Often the stores can’t stock all of the colors available. I found great shoes I love at Target, but they only had a few basic colors. When I went to Target.com, I found the same shoe in lots of different colors. I used coupon websites to get free shipping & 10% off the order online as well!

Step out of your “comfort zone”, try some new things on…referring to styles, colors, patterns, and length. How many times have you picked and bought the same type, color clothes or shoes. Pick a few outfits out to take to dressing room, try them all on…you will be surprised what you might find that looks great on you!!!! Some MUST's on this shopping trip: NO KIDS, SOME TIME, and OPEN MIND and (last but not least) a good eye for the marked down/ sale items…the great thing about Marshall's it is already DISCOUNTED DESIGNER CLOTHES!!!

Having worked in fine women's clothing, I have learned that good clothing is worth the INVESTMENT. FEWER but BETTER pieces are the foundation of a classic wardrobe…develop your own personal STYLE by finding the proper CUT for your body and find a very good seamstress or tailor to FIT your clothes. It will make a world of a difference. Incorporate TRENDS w/ ACCESSORIES. I shop everywhere… I am not a clothes snob, but I do love vintage b/c of the quality!

I have found a way to put tograther the perfect outfits without robbing a bank. You pick one nice piece, it could be a neckleace, top, shoes or whatever. Pay a little more for this piece (still get it on sell or clearence of course). You can then go cheap, cheap, cheap on the rest or the outfit and still look like a million buck.

I agree with Dana E. I buy quality items on clearance at nice stores. The prices are a little higher than “bottom-of-the-basement” but the clothes LAST much longer. I buy classic pieces that never go out of style. I wear them all the time and they still look and fit great! The clothes that I buy at “cheapie” stores often only last a season or a year before falling apart or losing their shape.

For Moms in my area, Upstate SC, there is a Children's consignment sale called Weecycled Wear that happens twice a year. It is HUGE. They only take good, clean clothes and baby items. Great for shopping on a budget. Another Awesome place I shop is Plato's Closet. Gentle Used clothes that are only the latest styles. I bought a cute outfit (shirt and shorts) for myself last week $12 ($6 bucks each) and my husband found a pair of tennis shoes ($18) and cargo shorts ($6). Google them to find one near you.

Pick up a copy of The Science of Sexy at the library and learn about how every body can look good. It makes my shopping easier/faster/more productive/more fun to know what types of cuts and fabrics will work for me.

Take your time when searching the racks at places like Marshalls and TJ Maxx. It might take a little time to find the perfect top, dress or bathing suit, but odds are it's in there somewhere among the racks. So take your time and dig slowly :-)

I love when Gap has their markdowns every tuesday and then sent me coupons in the mail and emails which makes for an even better price for my son's clothes. It looks like I dress him expense, but truthfully it's way less than it looks!

For some reason, at my Macy's the price on the tag, or the sale price shown, is never the actual price – it is always lower! So don't be afraid to grab something and head over to the wall price checker to see what it really rings up – you might be surprised! I got a $69 cardigan for just $16 earlier this week. And always check the department store Web site for that week's 10-20% off coupon.

I love the 10 dollars off 10 purchase coupons from stores like JcPenney. I can always score a free shirt with these!

I don't buy anything that I don't love in the store. I find that if I love it in the store i'll wear it once i get it home. If i just like it in the store it tends to end up on the shelf with the tags still on never to be worn. I have found that typically the item always looks its best in the store.

I also don't shop if im in a hurry, that always leads to spur of the moment decisions, which in my case tend to be wrong ones. If I find something I think I love in the mall I will put it on hold continue shopping and when I'm all done shopping if I still feel the same way about it I know it's for me.

I don't look at price tags because i don't mind spending a little more on something I really love. With that being said, I won't shop in stores that are to high priced or i'll limit myself to looking at the sales racks. Marshall's and TJ Maxx are my favorite stores they have a wide variety of cloths with every style in mind and i know i'll be getting a great deal. There is nothing better then finding something you love at a great price!! I also save my receipts, at the end of the month if I haven't worn it I return it.

I shop at thrift stores on a regular basis for my clothes! I'll buy something even if it's out of season, it's usually on sale and I'll have it already in my closet when the right season rolls around!

Great job! What a beautiful outfit! I love to shop at Marshalls! :) They have great prices… and great clearance racks! I love to shop the thrift stores/garage sales/consignment sales in our area. Name brands at great savings. But new, on the clearance rack, for almost the same price is pretty good too!

goodwill is my favorite store…I don't buy anything at regular price.

I love Marshalls and just last week found Lilly Pulitzer polos and skirts…OMG!!! I find shopping there frequently is helpful to find great deals!

My tip is if you see a stain or button missing on your piece of clothing that you are buying and you know it would be an easy fix, ask the manager for a percentage off. They will usually say 10-20%. The only thing I find is that the sale is usually final, no returns.

I buy the next size up for my kids when it's on clearance. But you have to be careful about the quality and store. I would rather pay $10 for Gymboree pants which I know won't shrink when I wash them than pay $5 somewhere else and my kids can only wear them once. I also shop the same way for baby showers. I'll buy sleepeers, socks, hats, diapers, whatever on clearance and save it for my next baby shower! I've already been to 3 this year.

Garage sales and clearance and I will consider anything $5 and under at any store!

I am a HUGE Marshalls & TJ Maxx fan. I live in both stores. My shopping tip, is to shop on days when they receive “fresh” deliveries of new merchandise. Typically that is Tuesdays and Thursdays here in Orlando. This helps get a jump on buying the good stuff first. I'll see you later Marshalls….

Marshalls is one of my VERY favorite stores. They have EVERYTHING you could want or need for your whole family. I bought some fabulous spring dresses there at true bargain prices. It's also my go-to place for kids toys and birthday party presents.

Well, I am not sure about a savvy tip. I am just pathetic when it comes to clothes shopping. I could seriously use help. Anyway, I always look at the clearance stuff from Lands End and LL Bean to see if they have anything and I try to buy off season. While I would like to lose weight realistically it isn't going to happen so I am always pretty sure of the size.

Nearly all of my clothes and my infants clothes came from freecycle, Goodwill, and yard sales!

If you have children, or are prone to spilling, buy a bar of Fels Naptha. (I can usually find it at Publix.) It only costs a dollar, but it's the best thing I've found for taking out any kind of stain on clothing. I guess this isn't a shopping tip, but more of a hint for getting better use out of your clothes so you can wear them longer.

Plan ahead – shop clearance racks at the end of the season (not to mention all the time) and choose classic pieces that will survive more years than the latest trends.

I love Marshalls!! What I love even more is the BCBG dress I got at Marshalls for $30!

I like to hit Kohl's clearance racks when there is a % off and the Kohl's cash and I generally buy at the end or near end of the season. Then I will hit Marshall's and Ross since they are in the same strip mall for more really good deals.

I love the tips everyone has been leaving!! I refuse to pay full price for anything. If I see something I like, I watch the sales until it hits my bottom line price. If I miss it, then I didn't need it!!

E-bay, yard sales, thrift stores, discount stores, I use them all. There are so many great ways to save money on clothes I end up having way too much stuff :). I also love Lands End clearance and “On the Counter” sections. Especially with their guarantee (if you're ever dissatisfied, return it for a refund), I feel completely safe buying from them. Also if I buy a purse or bag from them and later it wears out, I can return it and get a free replacement!

My tip is to always head to the back of the store. I never buy anything that is not on a clearance rack. I walk right past every new item and go for the clearance. Marshalls has great clearance. I always find underwear, hats and clothes for my boys there really cheap.

Everyone is putting up all that I already do! I LOVE consignment sales, and of course I shop off-season. I also save up MyPoints to trade in for giftcards to go shopping!

When you are at TJ Maxx and Marshalls it is best to go to the clearance aisle and look at the tags that are stacked with stickers – that is usually when you can get the best discount. I actually read this in a magazine article recently but I know it is true.

I've become an online shopper for my kids clothes. I've found that I can get really good deals at gymboree and gap on clearance using coupon codes.

The Children's Place lets you stack coupons and you can use them on the clearance. The best is when the clearance is 50% off, I have a 15% off coupon and then get another 10% off for using my Place card!! Marshall's is GREAT for when you are needing classy name brand for a special event and don't have name brand $$!!

I buy a staple item such as a black skirt, a black or white undershirt and a black or white top. Then I can buy all sorts of colorful tops and bottoms that may be on clearance and I will know that I have something to wear with it already!

Besides buying out of season, I like to buy more clothing that won't be 'out of style' the following year. Learning to mix & match is a great plus and buying some key accessories to dress up or dress down your 'traditional' outfit is key. A great piece of jewelry or scarf can really make an outfit come alive. I also like funky socks!

I know all the clearance sections of TJMaxx and Marshalls in my area. On my lunch break I peruse the clearances quickly. My favorite finds so far are $100 All Clad baking sheets for $25 and and $150 All clad fondue set for $69. Love them. YOu can also find Ralph Lauren bedding at super low prices on clearance. I have gotten shams and sheets for $5. The key is to check the clearance frequently.

I love to shop Thrift stores and consignment shops. I get great deals on things that are hardly used….

Black is always classic and very slimming.

I sign up for all of my favorite store email lists to get notified of special sales. I love to ship at the end of the season at nice dept stores to score better quality classic clothes at low end prices that last for years to come.

Don't buy it if you don't love it. Too many times i have bought something that i wasn't 100% that i loved – inevitably it is either gathering dust or it was returned (often by my sweet husband). Thanks Jenny.

NEVER buy “goal” clothes, clothes you hope to someday fit in. I have purchased clothes that are maybe a size or two too small bc it was an amazing deal. Not such a good deal when they never end up fitting. Sad.

Often when I need an item from a store that does not discount, I wait until they have a special (like Lane Bryant just had for $20 off $40 or more) and then rather than pay shipping to home, I either find a free shipping code, or get it shipped to store, for free shipping. Often the deals on line are better than in store.

I find a lot of the kids clothing on ebay, where I can bid on several items at once. One time I got my daughters winter coat that lasted for 2 seasons (it was a little big the first season) for $2.99 with shipping!! It was almost unworn anf was cozy and warm for her!

Shop on a weekday! Weekends are crowded and inventory gets depleted quickly. However, many stores get new items in on weekdays, and you'll never have to deal with crowded dressing rooms on, say, a Tuesday afternoon (as opposed to a Saturday).

Always use a coupon or look for great clearance finds! And accessories can really make any outfit!

I add embellishments to plain clothes to bring them up to trends, such as an iron on or applique (sp?). saves money and makes it your own style

I always head the clearance rack first. It's also good to scan end caps of aisles because they like to stick clearance items there to. I shop at budget friendly stores too, which helps!

My mother-in-law used to work at Marshalls in Cape Cod and I LOVED shopping there :) Now, she has moved to FL and retired and I still shop at Marshalls!!! Habit, I guess :)

When I find something I like I think of other items I already have that are the same or similar color. If I already have a long sleeve red knit top, I probably don't need another one. But I might get a short sleeve instead, or one made of a different material.

Buying great quality children's clothing at Marshall's will stand the test of time and be able to be passed on or recycled to siblings/friends. Love it!

Spend money on a great pair of dark wash jeans. Pay more for a good fit, length, style, and you will see the return. A good dark wash pair of jeans can go with anything and lasts for years!

Shopping at discount stores, like Marshall's, will usually provide the best value for your dollar since you're able to obtain designer clothes at yard sale prices! Stick to your size and color favorites. Buying post-season if often the best value.

A great shopping tip is to buy a pair of off season black slacks and they are great all year round…dress up or dress down…Saving money and shopping is a great combination…

I always try to pair coupons with sales that are going on. I also buy clothes that are classic, and stock up on solid color items. I have clothes from high school ( I am 23 now) and people ask me where I got them, thinking that they are new when they are 6-8 years old!

Go shopping for FREE! Have a swap meet/ Girls night with your friends. Everyone brings items they don't wear anymore and swap. It worked for me, I got a new Coach scarf, and a really nice handbag!
