I remember last year I thought I was so smart and bought a $50 AmEx or Visa card and tried to buy groceries with it that same day. Just so everyone knows — it takes at least an hour to activate after you call. It's not like a gift card that works right away.

Oy, I did the same thing last year. It was so frustrating b/c I bought it first and then did my shopping (which took 40 minutes) and then went to use it and it wouldn't work and no one could figure out why. I ended up at Customer service waiting a looong time (20 minutes but it felt like forever with my 2 and 3 year olds in the cart waiting) for them to try to call the credit card company to figure out why it wouldn't work. Eventually they came to that conclusion too- it takes at least 1 hour to activate. Wish they would put that in the fineprint on the back or something!

Last year, I went in and bought a new one everyday and used the last one to buy the new one which they said was allowed so I was able to roll them, basically. Then at the end of the week or the next week, I used it to buy groceries.

Amex actually told me it takes 1 hour and 10 minutes. What kind of crazy waiting period is that? I too thought that I would use it to buy groceries right away… lesson learned!

It is also very hard to find a retailer that accepts that Amex card. Redbox won't. But of course Walmart does. I never thought about using it to purchase the gas card though… great tip.

I think if you are going to do that deal…go get the card with $25 in dry stuff, then call to activate it …then go back and finish your shopping or go the next day….I had the same problem last year thinking I was slick and the register was a nightmare! But we ended up waiting to use it until our next trip and the CS rep took $5.00 off our bill right then for our trouble, so we actually got $15:)

In the past, you just had to spend $25, give them the coupon, and you get $10 off your total including the gas card. I hope it hasn't changed. I have not seen the physical ad yet.

I've read all of the comments about the gas cards and AmX cards and I still can't figure out how it works / how to use it to the best advantage. I think most people are talking about the AmX cards and not the gas cards. Can someone please explain?! Thank you :)

I've purchased the gas card from Publix before. Clip the coupon for the gas card for $10 off a $50 gas card and pick up a gas card from the gift card section of the store. It requires that you have at least an additional $25 in purchases. Do your other shopping at the store.

My store has been allowing the $25 requirement to be before coupons — not the end total.

Your total before the gas card & before coupons must be at least $25

When you add in the gas card your total will be at least $75

When I present my coupons – I always ask them to scan the gas card coupon for $10 off $50 card First

Then I use my $5 off of $25 competitor total purchase

Then I give them my Publix coupons

Next are my competitor coupons (my store still accepts Target, Whole Foods, Food Lion, Bi-Lo, Piggly-Wiggly, Earth Fare & Harris-Teeter as competitors)

Then lastly are my manufacturer coupons

Hopefully my total is something very low, but even if you don't use any other coupons, your total after the $10 gift card coupon will be at the most $65 + tax

I haven't ever left the store and headed right over to the gas station to use it so I don't know how long the gas cards take to activate, but I've never had a problem using them — they are so popular here, that sometimes its hard to even find one

The gas cards are really easy….you just buy a $50.00 gas card they scan it you hand them the $10.00 off coupon that will be in the weekly flyer and you pay $40.00 for a $50.00 gas card.(As long as you have $25.00 worth of groceries before coupons) I can't even remember if you have to call and activate the gas cards or not.

There is an ad on the home page of the Orlando Sentinel's website saying that you can get $5 off the purchase of ANY $50 Gift Card at Winn-Dixie through December 7. Max allowed is $300 worth of cards (before discount?). Don't know if this is a coupon or just a reward card promotion, but if you have a W/D in your area, this may be a good deal depending on your needs.

On the Fruit2o water, if you haven’t already printed it in the last few months, you can go to http://www.fruit2o.com and register for an account and print a coupon for $.55 off a 6 pack of water. This stuff is really good, especially the raspberry but I printed the coupon when it was on sale earlier this year. :-( Hope this helps someone!

I just left Publix in Richmond Hill, they no longer take competitors coupons that are not within 5 miles of the store, so my Target coupons for $10 were no good at this Publix. I will check at the customer service counter from now on BEFORE I shop to see if coupon policy has changed.

Isn't that irritating? I wish they would give a week or so notice, when they implement changes in a coupon policy. All of the Savannah Publixs' and the new one in Pooler take Target so it might be worth the extra drive! If you make the switch let the Richmond Hill manager know. fwiw – we were able to buy more than one Amex card at a time using a $10 off coupon for each one. I didn't think it was possible to “roll” the Amex cards (i.e. use an Amex gift card to buy a new Amex gift card), but I see one person below who says they did that last year. Anyone tried that this year?

Using the Amex to buy the gas card is a great idea. Personally, I am not sure that I am going to be able to find $25 worth of groceries to buy to do the gas card deal more than once, maybe twice. I guess that is the irony that comes with stockpiling.

Some other ideas come to mind – such as using it to buy Huggies and sending in for the $10 Publix giftcard deal (thereby effectively getting $15 off before even starting to use any diaper coupons).

I just bought the Amex gift card with the intention to use it to purchase the gas card and $25 worth of groceries. Ran into a little glitch though – the Amex card isn't activated as soon as you buy it – takes up to 4 hours before it is activated so it wouldn't let me pay for the groceries and gas card. I will go back to the store in a few hours and hopefully complete the deal. I will also use a CVS email coupon for $5 off of $25 purchase. Have been using those at Publix a lot lately with no problems.

Give it a month and you'll cut your time in half. Hang in there. I spend on average now about 2-3 hours online a week and save at least $25 per hour with that time.

I think you will fnd CVS a much better drugstrore..they are much easier to me to understand…also, Jenny recommends that we just use 1 grocery store and 1 drug store due to time constraints. Hang in there..2-3 hrs a week is work saving $100/month…$1,200/yr…

I've been doing this almost a year and I still don't do Walgreens unless they have something FABULOUS that I just can't wait for. My tx at Wags never works out…and what's funny is I can go in there and do the exact same one as a friend (using same Q, etc) and we both end up with diff totals. CVS is awesome, Publix too. And yes, give it some time and you'll get faster! Agreeing with Tiwnfin that 3 hrs a week isn't too bad to save (for me $150 – $200/mo) PLUS I have a stockpile of items in both the medicine cabinets and pantry that I certainly didn't have before!

I was wondering if anyone can tell how I know if my coupons are doubling. I've been shopping at Publix since June and was just so excited about how much we had cut out grocery bill by that I have not looked closely at the receipt. I am thinking that my Publix in AL is not doubling the manufacturer coupons. I work just over the state line in FL and have thought about going to the one there but know that FL is a tad stricter when is comes to coupons. Thanks for the help!!

There would be 2 different lines on your receipt, the first would say vendor coupon then the 2nd line would say multiplied coupon.

If you have a kroger, target etc those list as competitor coupon. Publix coupons list with the actual name of the item you purchased.

They accepted mine but it was a few days before Thanksgiving. She didn't mention it (she asked where it was from and I told her Target but she didn't say anything about that new policy). She did however say that they are no longer accepting expired Publix coupons (they used to apparently).

I'm in SW Florida & my Publix still accepts them. My store manager told me that they will be making some changes to the coupon policy in the first quarter of next year and that the competitor coupons will be based on distance. She wasn't sure if they would still be able to accept them then, but for now she said they were fine. The closest SuperTarget is 19 miles away.

You can try asking them to check it and see how it rings up. I've done that before & the deal worked even though there was no sign and nothing in the flyer.

The Nivea Body Wash that is on sale for $3.89 at Publix is on sale for $2.99 at Target. Using the $3 off coupons that expire this week will make it free.

Some stores will let you and some will not. It all depends on the manager. You can check with customer service before you start shopping, or call ahead of time.

Food Lion and Harveys offer Produce and Meat department coupons. And Green Giant and Birds Eye offer coupons for their frozen veggies.

Don't know where you are, but some competitors like Food Lion have coupons for fresh produce. I've seen a few from Publix…usually in tandem with another product.

If I didn't buy any boxed/processed foods, I would just focus on saving on my cleaning supplies & other household things. Then that savings can be applied to your fresh items.

…um.. is it just me or is Jenny's math off this week? 50/1 Campbells chunky soup priced at $1.19 does not make it 19¢. And 50/1 Blue Diamond Almonds priced at $1.59 does not make it 59¢. Using the 35/1 Chungs food product that is 1.59 doesn't make it 74¢.and using a 50/1 coupon off of Pillsbury rolls doesn't make it free when it costs $1.00 to begin with. I am so confused.. am I missing something important?

I'm new to this, but I'm going to attempt to walk in, purchase the AmEx card, try to activate while shopping then purchase gas card with it and groceries. So in my mind I will get a $50 gas card for $30. Has anyone tried this?

Yes, last year I bought several of the AmEx cards using one to buy another, rolling them, in essense. I asked if it was allowed at customer service and they said yes. My store has a sign that says it takes 45 min. to work but they told me at the register, it could take 24 hours. I bought one today and plan to go back in a few minutes and buy another with the first.

don't forget the one-time $4.95 activation fee for the Amex card – so it is actually $35 for a $50 gas card. I have been rolling the Amex card into gas cards for the last couple of days.

Beware the AMEX gift card!!!

My mother in law recieved one as a gift and the took off $4.95 everytime she made a purchase! She used it for incidentals 4 different times and was shocked when the card ran out of money after she had only spent $30. Policies may have changed, but be careful none the less.

according to the website, as of 8-22-10, “Gift Cards issued by American Express have no fees AFTER purchase (including dormancy, inactivity or service fees).” this is part of the CARD act passed by congress.

This is the first year I've purchased the gift cards from Publix, but I've never had that happen. I have received the Amex cards as gifts for years and never had to pay a service fee on my purchases. I think that you MIL should call Amex as that seems to be a glitch. The only time I pay the 4.95 is for the activation fee.

well the ad is for $10 off of oral b professional care 1000 but i went to 3 different stores and COULD NOT find them..one store even said they stopped carrying them. the 3rd store i went to had a sign by oral b vitality that said $10 off so i took them to the costumer service and asked if it was okay even though it wasnt a professional care 1000 and he said it was fine. they were priced for 26.99 and I got 2 and a $50 gas card for $52. I also used a $5 off of $50 and even though the $10 off of a gas card coupon says its for a $25 dollar grocery purchase, he said i could use it even though it technically wasnt “food” type grocery. its a really good deal and the toothbrushes are rechargeable..no more batteries!!

It's in the Publix ad there should be some ads when you first enter your store if you don't have the one from the paper. Hope that helps you! :)

Is anyone else having trouble printing from the Kellogg's website? I can get in the site and select the coupons I want to print, but beyond that it does nothing when I try to click on the “get selected coupons”. I've even tried to select all and print and that doesn't work. Any thoughts?
