This really is a great printer for couponing.  It’s a laser printer meaning it solves some of the scanning issues at the register that inkjet printers cause.  It also can print WAY more than an inkjet before needing more toner.  The cartridge that it comes with will print 700 sheets.  Then grab a replacement high yield cartridge and get another 2000 sheets out of that!

    • Sissy

So is this only black and white printing? Is this the one you always talk about? Do you have this one?

      • Chamblin70

I have this printer. I actually purchased mine last year for $99.99. The toner will last for about 1,500 pages if it is a full page of text. Longer if there is less than a full page. I buy the high yeild toner cartrdiges and they run about $60. but you can print over 3,000 pages. The only down side… when I purchased it I did not realize that I would have to replace the drum at a cost of $99.99.

        • Sissy

replace the drum? how often? what does that mean!!

          • Chamblin70

Sissy, I have had mine for about a year. I just started getting the message to replace the drum. I have used it a LOT. I was printing over 2,000 letters a month with it in addition to printing things for my children for chool.  Considering the replacement drum is $99.99, I think I will just take advantage of the $49.99 printer idea.

            • Sissy

this is the base model, that is not duplex

        • Cj Millie

Great printer…i love mine…not worth buying a drum but instead getting a new one for $50…meritline sells the 2500 PAGES GENERIC INK BETWEEN $17 – 21 AND IS CONSTANLY ON SALE…

    • Sissy

How much is a replacement cartridge?

      • Guessing

good question want to know that too

        • Sissy

I just looked it up, seems to be around …$65!!

      • guest

Depends high end you are paying bout $65 low end bout $30.

      • lisa

I pay $18 for my toner.

        • Jcvelazquez

where do you get your toner from?

      • MarySC

I’ve purchased toner and refilled myself, cost was about $6. I guess you can refill a cartridge a couple of times.

        • Jcvelazquez

was that easy to do? I just purchased a printer this morning for my home business and will have to make 450 copies right off the back, so I would be so happy if just buying toner is easier… what brand did you buy?

          • MarySC

It was really easy, came with step by step instructions and everything you need.  I prepared to get dirty but it didn’t happen.  The messiest part is making sure to get all the old toner out of the cartridge… I used a vacuum and then also shook it out while holding it in the garbage can (outside).  I messed up by not covering the sensor holes so I had a good bit of toner left in the cartridge.

I bought mine on eBay last July from Refilltonerqueen and it is still being sold: “90g Toner Refill for Brother … HL2140”. And the printer is still going strong.

    • Northsouthwest

      Is it color or b&w?

      • Chamblin70

        B&W

    • Justme

I got this at staples on black friday  and so far I love it

    • Lsmart85

Isn’t it on sale at Staples this week too?  Also, do you know if it can print front and back?

      • Sissy

        yes it is 49.98 too

      • Chamblin70

Yes it will print duplex automatically. No need to print the front and then put the paper back in. It will print the front, pull the page back through to print the back.

        • Sissy

this model is NOT the duplex

        • Girlunexpected

not duplex model I got it a few weeks ago on sale for the same price. You have to print the front and then put the paper back in.. I have done it several times.

      • Just Jen

I just ordered it on Staples online and used my staples rewards – paid $36 and change :)

    • Chamblin70

This is a nice B&W Laser printer. The Replacement toner cartridges run about $30.00 for the regular cartridge or around $60.00 for the high yield. With the regular cartridge you will print about 1,500 pages (full page of text). With the high yield cartridge you can print around 3,200 (full page of text). The con: Mine is nowing giving me a message to repalce the drum. The replacemnt drum is $99.99. I think I will just buy a new printer instead.

      • Sissy

how long did you have it before the drum needed replaced!

    • Jessi

If you go through upromise it’s 2% cash back and free shipping even under $50 at office depot

    • Christi

I must say  I am not to printer savy, but I have to say I have had my printer for 7 years it is a lexmark 4 in one printer, fax , scanner and copier. It has worked amazing this whole time. I have used it to print my coupons for about 4 years now. I print everything in black and white,  I refill at Walgreen’s  for 12.99 and it last about 9 months. The only thing I don’t like it is not wireless other than that I love it. original cost 99.99 and I never had any kind of replace ment parts costs. Anyone else like lexmark?

      • Carolyn

I have an old lexmark printer that works great but is running out of ink.  I was wondering how that works to refill at Walgreens?  Do you drop the cartridge off and pick up another day or do they refill it there?  $12.99 sounds great to me!

        • Sandym25713

I have a HP photo 926 and I bought a refill kit for around 10 bucks and refilled almost a year on one kit!…i’s messy but you save big bucks.  Some printers won’t let you refill like the dell we have upstairs but if it works it’s a moneysaver!..

        • Christi

That exactly right takes usually about 30 minutes and I drop it off in the film department , However not all walgreens do it .. But many do

          • Carolyn

thank you both for your replies!  I love how this community helps each other out with deals and advice!

      • Mia1236

have yours for 7 years? wow thats great I just bought one LEXMARK 4 in one and is wireless but a few days later after install it  did not work anymore I got at walmart dot com for only 40.00 a few weeks ago and  I really liked but it keeps saying ERROR so im going to walmart and return it but i really want keep it and more now that you say that have yours for 7 years

    • I have this just for my coupons and love it, I print so many and still have many more to go, I have a spare roller here but haven’t needed it yet, I did save another $20 or so with coupons, etc at Office Depot for the extra roller, well worth buying just for printing coupons

    • Trianglemom

Staples also has it on sale for $49.99.  I picked up one for $29.99 after using Staples rewards.  Im excited about my purchase bec I spend a small fortune on HP inkjet ink.

    • Abby N

I have the Brother HL2270-DW printer.  It’s similar to this one except it has the wireless option and automatic duplex.  I absolutely love it! I’ve had it over a year now and have never had any problems.  It’s on sale this week for $89.99 at Office Depot and Office Max.  I haven’t had to replace the drum on mine yet, but there are refurbished ones online for much less than from Brother.

    • Guest

If you get this printer or the HL-2270DW (wireless and duplex version) you can get replacement toner and drum when Ebates has 27% cash back + 10% off at 4Inkjets. I got the High Yield toner for $30.99 ($22.63 after cash back) and the drum for $44.99 ($32.84 after cash back). They run the 27% cash back about 4 times a year. This is a non OEM toner and drum but it works fine.

      • Guest

Let me correct what I said above. The toner works fine. I have not used the replacement drum yet. I didn’t want to mislead anyone.

    • Guest

There is an office depot coupon available for $10 off of $50 available. Make sure to get it if your going to purchase the printer. You can use it at Staples also. I did today for all the free easy rebates deals plus used my rewards.

      • Jcvelazquez

On the coupon it says does not count towards technology…

        • Guest

You’re right. Sorry about that. I used this morning at Staples but didn’t buy any Tech products.

          • Jcvelazquez

oh okay, I just wanted to make sure b/c that was my intention to bring the coupon when I purchased  the printer earlier but I read the fine print and was sadly disappointed

    • Savinsharon

WHAT is the “drum”? How often is do you have to replace it? Do all laser printers need “drums” replaced? I’ve had an HP laser b&w for over 10 years and have never heard of “drums” needing to be replaced?

      • Tammy44

Let’s just say when the drum goes, you are better off buying a new printer. I have a brothers wireless toner that I bought for $120 and to replace the drum is $80.

    • Linda3

I have this printer and mine is parked right now because it needs a drum.  I keep hoping to find a source of getting one at a lesser cost.

    • sher

I get my replacement toner at meritline.com. Runs abot $23.00 with free shipping. It is a replacement brand- been using for over 2 yrs and is great. Love this printer. Don’t hesitate to get. You’ll love it too.

    • guest

I’ve bought this printer 2x and I’m not impressed at all. I had to send the first one back twice, the second time I forgot to take out my drum unit and then had to either buy a new drum unit or a new printer (which I bought b/c it seemed smarter to pay a little bit more for a new printer altogether). Mine is currently not working properly. It’s a good deal, but not a good printer

    • Marie24

can someone explain please what to do before replace the ink it something about putting tape on it? thank you!!!

      • SarahR

Marie, check it out on YouTube,  search Brother 2140.  Basically, you block the sensors with opaque tape.  I did it and the original toner lasted a while.  The guy on Youtube shows you how and it works great.

    • CarlaZZzzz

When I felt that I was being cheated by having to refill so often I googled it on u-tube and found all kinds of tutorials on covering the sensor.  Then found inkowl.com who sends you 4 refills to the house for $35!!  I thought it was going to be a pain, so waited for my children to go to bed and DH and I laid it out on the kitchen table. we were done in 20 min with all 4 because I had that many cartridges to fill. I also print our church bulletin and other documents and LOVE this printer.  I have not had a problem with the drum though however there were several tutorials on u-tube and parts to repair it at inkowl.com that were not more than $10

    • JeffVL

      Just info
Target has epson stylus multi-function ink jet printer NX130 for $20  on clearance

    • Guest

Just bought this printer again from Staples with my Staples rewards.  It’s my third one, and I absolutely love it!  I have 2 of the regular ones and 1 wireless.   It’s great for couponing and wonderful for any students you might have in college.  Saves a ton on ink cartridges and is super fast!  I can’t believe I couponed without it for so long.  Highly recommend!

    • I just bought this printer from Staples today, for around $50. Is this printer child-safe with regard to air pollution? Do you have any suggestions about which room this is best placed in? Thanks.

    • Kwirtley

I was wondering if anyone has had problems printing from target or coupon network using this printer?  I have an epson all in one and I am not able to print coupons from target or coupon network.
