Here is a great incentive to save up your extra change.  If you use Coinstar machines to turn your change into cash, think about getting gift cards instead.  If you choose to convert the coins into a gift card to various retailers you will not be charged any fee (if you choose to convert to cash you are charged a 9.8% fee).

A Tip from a Reader:
I’ve made a point to save the leftover change from transactions to throw into a large piggy bank. By Christmas, I’ve easily saved $125-$140 and then convert that change into certificates to use at Amazon to do part of my Christmas shopping online.

(thanks Cheryl in Greenville!)

I went to the coinstart site and it states when you cash in 40.00 in coins you will get a code on the bottom of your receipt..enter that code at the coinstar website for a 10.00 itunes giftcard…. now that's a deal…cash coins in for a CVS card and then get an itunes card to put away for someone's christmas gift!! thanks for the deal!!

do they mail you the gift card since you have to enter the code on the website?

        • itismedia

There is a code on the receipt you can enter online

I think it said you had to cash it in for an ITunes gift card in order to get the 10$ bonus gift card.

I haven't used coinstar in a while. I guess the option to select a gift card is on the main screen where you select cash, charity or a credit for that store you're at? Are there lots of stores to choose from? Do you take your receipt to customer service the same as usual and then they issue the GC? Sorry for all the questions, like I said, I haven't used one in a while and am not sure what to expect. Thanks!

I have done this before for Amazon gift cards and it's a code on the bottom of your Coinstar receipt that you enter when you place your order online.

Is the extra $10 only good for iTunes or are there other options?

      • Savenmoney

        Only for iTunes.

I have not use this system before. If I take 4o dollars in change can I get 2 -20 gift cards from two different places or does the 40 have to be from one store? Does anyone know the value of the cards ex: 10-20-25-40-50 Just trying to figure out if I can split this up.Two kids with birthdays in Dec.

You may want to call Coinstar prior to dragging all your coins to the machine. I took mine to the super wal-mart here in Tallahassee and was not able to convert coins to gift cards. I called Coinstar and they confirmed there are no machines in Tallahassee that will convert. There website does not tell you what machines are able to accept this deal and which ones are not. Apparently it is up to the store if they want to offer this deal or not.
