One of the best ways to save on printing coupons is to pick the best printer for the job.  Laser printers are by far the way to go in terms of cost and in terms of getting high quality coupons that scan great.

    Ditto. I ran out of toner last week and was not about to pay a boat load
    of money for a toner cartridge. The prices are crazy at Staples, Office Max,
    and Office Depot but I found the TN450 for less than $50 at Newegg.com.

      I just wait for X/XX or % off office store coupons that are usable on technology products. More often than not, you can't use coupons on HP ink at all.

    I bought the previous version of this printer (HL-2140) for $50 last summer. It runs excellent and the toner lasts a long time. I think I bought an aftermarket, “non-Brother”, high capacity toner from Amazon for less than $20. It is advertised to print 2600 pages.

    I bought this printer 6-8 months ago and love it. I print a lot of coupons and my daughters school stuff. I just replaced the toner and only paid $30 for it on amazon. That is usually the cost of one ink jet cartridge that I had to replave every 3-4 weeks before.

    Just purchased one! I didn't have to add the eraser because it looks like they calculate the free shipping before the coupon is deducted. But, then I noticed that I could pay for it online to get the $10 coupon and choose In-store pickup! So I'll be able to pick it up today and not wait for it to ship!! Sweet!

      Original Brother TN 360 is $42 approx on Amazon. $45 + tax at BJ’s

      You can buy on the cheap for non Brother toner for half the price.
      My dad bought from http://www.meritline.com/brother for $22
      Yields over 3300 copies especially when you cover up the windows on each side with black tape after you get the “toner out” signal.

      Check out 4inkjets(dot)com or 123inkjets(dot)com or meritline(dot)com. They are usually a little over $30 for compatible cartridges, about $45 for Brother, I think. There is a thread in the SS Community that I started about this. The toner for this one is a little higher than the previous model.

    For those of you wondering where to get toner from, you can save a lot by buying off ebay (cheaper than amazon). I personally buy expired Brother toners (and ink cartridges when I had a different printer). They work perfectly provided they are factory sealed. I would never buy a non OEM toner as they will void your warranty if something ever goes wrong. (I fell for a remanufactured that didn't work and was just out of my money.)

    Also to note is that I have had a different Brother model for 4 years and have only replaced the toner exactly once. The starter toner lasted WAY longer (printed regularly for three years) than how many pages they claimed I would get out of it. Even when I replaced it, the toner hadn't run out, just got a message that it was low. They are well worth the money over inkjets any day.

    My stores also claim laser printed coupons have been photocopied, even if they scan. Any way around this? The stores mostly in question are HT and CVS/Walgreens/Rite Aid.

      Most can't unless there is no office depot in your state. If they have a regular store in your state they have to charge tax.

    I would like to note that I purchased this exact printer the last time this special was going on, maybe a month ago. It does not come with a standard toner that prints 1000-2000 sheets. It only comes with a starter toner that yields up to 700 sheets. You can find the specifications on Staples website.

      Thanks for saying that! I just bought mine a couple months ago and hadn't even printed a full ream of paper yet and it is saying low toner. I was not happy, but I guess this answers that question. Now, if I buy a bottle of toner online and refill it myself, will it hold it all or is it actually SMALLER in size?

    i bought this printer in November ( I believe it may have been early December) anyway it was when Jenny posted the deal .. I love love love this printer very easy to set up yesterday my toner low warning came on i cant even begin to tell you how many coupons I have printed this is just using the toner that came with the printer now i am on the hunt for cheap toner !

      On ebay you can get bottles of toner for dirt cheap… I am not handy at all so it takes me about 20 minutes but they come with instructions about unscrewing the end to fill it, reset the gear and reuse it. Earth friendly and cheap, my kind of deal. If you got that groupon this morning that should cover it…

          out of couriosity how many prints would you say you used over that 6 month period

      Pull out your toner, look on the side it has a round glass thingy on both sides. Cover it up with tape, and paper and your toner should last you a few more months. Mine lasted a total of 6 months when i finally replaced it :)

    I was going to order this printer until I read some comments about stores not taking laser printer coupons. Can anyone else comment on their experience with using a laser printer? Anyone in the Chattanooga area have any trouble?

      I've used a laser printer for years. Purchased a Brother printer about 10 yrs ago and it finally gave up. Went last week and purchased a Canon. It works great but I'm still taking advantage of this Brother printer. It's at a great price and Brother printers last. I haven't had any problems using the coupons I print out in SC. Hope this helps.

      My coupons rarely scan at Public, Kroger, WAGS or CVS…but the cashiers always take them anyways by keying them in. I bet only 10% of them actually scan on the 2nd or 3rd try. After that they give up.

      I prefer to use my printer @ work b/c those always scan easily but my IT dept. keeps un-installing my coupon printing thing and then I have to keep re-installing it LOL The owner of my co. doesn't care that I print them, but IT is just doing his job by removing any “unnecessary” stuff off of my pc. anyways….My printer @ home looks like it prints great but when I get to the checkout, it just wont scan. I dont get it.

      Luckily, my boss said I could get a new printer and take my current, old clunky one home! :-)

      BTW, I'm in Mboro.

      Thanks for the responses. I just ordered one. I'm excited to get it and try it out. I have been printing the coupons in black and white only (my color ink is out) and have had no trouble with stores taking them, so hopefully it won't be a problem.

      I have had this printer since October of last year and it just ran out of ink. My husband spend about a half an hour and tricked the printer in to thinking it still had ink. It still works great. Only a few times have I had the coupons not want to scan. It also seems to make the coupons stick together a bit more, but that may be the hp paper I am using. Its a great printer, just make sure to cover up the holes in the toner to make you toner last longer, and adjust your printer settings to smaller resolution/dpi. As of to date I have printed almost 1400 pages, and its still going so defiantly worth the $50 investment.

    I just called my local Publix (Cumming, GA) who said they take black and white printed coupons. I also called my local Kroger (Dawsonville, GA) and they said they take black and white coupons as long as they are not for “free items”. The “free items” coupons need to be printed in color. Looks like I will be shopping at Publix more and more often since a new printer is now in my future! :)

      This one is not the wireless one. IF it is wireless i believe it has a W in the product name. I do have the wireless one 2170W and I love it!! i went 6 months before replacing the toner that came with the printer. ( I print a lot, and 2 kids who are always printing.)

      I purchased this printer last fall. My husband has it set up on our home network and I can print to it wirelessly. It can handle wireless if set up as such. I am lucky to have a computer geek as a husband though.

    The last time Jenny mentioned this printer I bought it and I love it. To answer your question, yes it can handle wireless. My laptop is wireless and I haven't had any problems with the printer.

    If you have the printer connected to another computer, say a desktop, and you share the printer you can print from any laptop. We've had it set up this way for YEARS and its been awesome!

      We all have Macs in our house (4 computers total) and I had no problem setting it up. Plus, you can turn on Print Sharing and all of the computers in the house can print to it.

    SOOO frustrated with Office Depot. I ordered the printer and the eraser 2 days ago and used my check card. The order went through with no problem and said it was scheduled to arrive today. I have been out of toner for a week and we needed another printer anyway so I was anxiously awaiting this one's arrival. Checked my email this morning and I had one from OD saying the printer was out of stock and that part of my order was canceled. Another email notified me that my eraser had been shipped and provided a tracking number for it. Meanwhile, my checking account still has the hold on the entire amount. I just spent 45 minutes on the phone with a very nice customer service rep. She tried to find a replacement and at first suggested an all-in-one photo smart copier/scanner/printer. I had to explain I needed a laser printer that didn't need toner replacement very often. So she suggested a Samsung laser printer but it didn't have any reviews so now I am just waiting for the Brother to be restocked so I can get one….

    Anyone recommend a printer/copier combo that is similar in quality to this printer? I need it to copy, print in color occasionally but NOT do PHOTOS. I don't care if it is injet or laser just cheaper for ink than my Canon MP160.

    i tried ordering this printer thursday and it was out of stock then miraculously on friday evening it let me place the order and the store has it for pick up and ready to go i just have to run and get it great timing to my expensive inkjets printhead just broke and i cant print anything at all

    Jenny – I wasn't able to get in on this deal till this week (April 3 – 9) and, of course the printer was no longer on sale. If you see it for this price (or better) again, please list it on your site. I have set $ aside for it. Our printer would be fine if the coupons wouldn't use our color ink. I have the default set for black only, but somehow the coupons override that. Thanks for what you do!
