I have a question. This is my first year making boxes. What is appropriate to put inside? I have colored pencils, crayons, pencil sharpener, jump rope, toy airplanes and the like. Is it ok to put toothbrushes, toothpaste and soap? Will it explode? What kind of candy is appropriate?

Thanks for anyone’s help and suggestions!!

      • Anonymous

Yes, I like to include toothbrushes, toothpaste, combs, and brushes.  If you put in soap, make sure you put it in a zip-loc so your whole shoebox does not smell like soap.  Hard candy or gum is appropriate (again, I would put candy and gum in a zip-loc).   The items you listed to include sound great!

Toys R Us has 24-pack crayola crayons for .25/pack today (Wed.) and tomorrow only. I found this deal at the Pineville, NC location.

Why no cows or pigs in a photo book?

      • Crazycatsmeow2004

I am wondering the same thing because Samaritan’s Purse says nothing about this.

      • BKS

Some of the countries they send the boxes to may be offended by pigs or cows because of their religion.

Can u also do a similar list for donations to animal shelters? This time of year donations drop significantly as people are too busy preparing for the holidays in their own homes. Items to include would be dog food, cat food, treats, leashes, cat litter, dawn dish soap, papertowels, hand soap. I’m sure there are others I’m not thinking about right now. Thanks, Michelle

I would not recommend sending starburst.  I don’t think it is a hard enough candy to survive in some of the climates that the boxes may be shipped to.  I have sent packages to friends in the military serving in the middle east and gummi bears have turned into gummi bars because they melted and then solidified again.  I don’t know if starburst would do this or not, but would hate for a child to find out the hard way.

      Thanks so much!!!

I work for Walmart and handle all the local donations for my store.  I had a lady come in and ask for a donation for Operation Christmas Child through her church, and she told me about the difficulty many of the people in her church are having because of the cost of items for the boxes.  I told her about this site and she couldn’t wait to get home and check it out.  Thanks  for providing this information!  I loved being able to pass it on!
