Today we are going to tackle the laundry…well, the laundry detergent at least. I’ll leave the actual laundry up to you.  What is a good price for laundry detergent and what are some of the factors to consider when stocking up?

I used the Item Search feature here on Southern Savers to research all the past sales on detergent for us.  You might be like me and love to have an idea in your head of the lowest price an item goes for and the item search is an awesome tool for that!

Laundry detergent can get a little tricky with the number of loads vs the number of ounces, high efficiency detergents and different concentrations so let’s break it down.

There are three main types out there:

Laundry Gel Pacs

The gel pacs or single use packages have become really popular lately.  They eliminate the need for measuring out liquid and the pacs contain a very concentrated formula so they are pretty small. As you can imagine, you will pay a little more for the convenience factor.

Liquid Laundry Detergent

You can’t judge liquid detergents based on the size of the bottle. You may notice “2x “or “3x” on the labels.  These just mean that their formula is twice or three times as concentrated as the regular stuff.  So if you buy 2x detergent you’ll need half as much per load as you would with plain old detergent.  The bottle will be smaller, but you’ll notice that it is the same price as the larger non-concentrated version.

Powder Laundry Detergent

Powder laundry detergent is pretty straightforward, you just scoop it out and add it to your laundry. Normally keeping an eye on the anticipated number of loads is the most helpful rather than the weight going by box weight.

Luckily, most of the time we will see laundry detergent measured by the number of loads.  So keeping that and the concentrations in mind, the easiest way to compare the prices of detergent is to compare the price per load. To do that, just divide the price after coupons and discounts by the number of expected loads.

In my house we are fans of the liquid and gel pacs and usually stick All or Tide brands, but y’all know I’ll use the other stuff if I can find a great deal on it! To get an idea of the best prices out there, I plugged in “laundry detergent” to the item search feature and all of the results are in the list below. I put a This is a great deal. Stock up! next to the top deals based on the per load price. In general if you can get below 10¢ a load you are doing good.

If you prefer a certain brand, you can even type in Tide Laundry Detergent” or “All Laundry Detergent” in the search so that you’re only looking deals or past sales on your favorite brands.

I make my own laundry detergent from a recipe I found online. Been making it for years. Costs less than $1 for 2 gallons and you use 1/2 cup at a time. Google “making homemade laundry detergent” and it should pull up first in the search results. I end up trading all my laundry coupons since I don’t use them.

      • anonymous

Oops, google “making homemade laundry soap” instead.

    • Melissa

We too prefer ALL (Small & Mighty) and Tide (Total Care). When the $5 off $5 purchase Foodlion coupon was out we used it to buy Tide which was on sale at FL and Purex that was on sale at Publix. I know the Purex worked out to 5 cents a load which I was thrilled with!

    • Ed in NC

Walgreens has 2X 50 oz. Purex for $2.99 and RP 01/06 has $1 coupon.

    • Christina

If you can get to CVS today or tomorrow, AND they still have the gelpacks, you get a $10 gift card when you spend 30 on select items, and those ALL gel packs are part of that. I bought 8 packages ($32) Used a few $1/1 and a few $2/2 Qs (now its $24) and got $10 back (not to mention that I had ECBs so I didn’t spend any cash at all, but now the amount spent is $14)… I believe there are 24 packs in each package, so I spent 7 cents per load on super convenient gel packs… I was super happy with myself :)

Very helpful and informative post. Thank you!

    • Rebecca

For those who are busy, every day price at publix for store brand detergent, 96 load liquid is 8.99, just under 10c/load. No time spent checking coupons/sales!

    • ItaRay

      I make my own detergents<3

    • linda

I make my own liquid laundry detergent that works great, smells great, and costs me $10.00 a YEAR for a family of five!

      • Chelle

This sounds great! Would you post your recipe for it? Thanks!

        • Ali Geisler

I have made my own and used the recipe from this site: http://www.thefamilyhomestead.com/laundrysoap.htm
The site gives a good breakdown of the cost per load as well. I made one “batch” and it made tons! I filled 3 bottles left from detergent I had bought in the past and shared with my mom.

        • HC

I do the same thing!! Got my recipie from the Duggars website! SUPER easy!! My Walmart has all the ingredients on the same shelf :) good luck!

    • mommyof1

I love the All detergent for clothes and we stock up when it goes on sale at Publix. We figure for a family of 3 (plus 2 dogs) we use about a bottle a month. I then by the Fab brand when its bogo to use on things like rugs etc..

    • gccsmom

Don’t know if it is still on sale, but Food Lion had their Surf 64 load HE liquid for $3.99…with the $1.00 off coupon, it comes out to .046 something per load…excellent! :)

    • alice

that is very helpful! i’d LOVE to see the same for toilet paper!

    • Lauren

I make my own detergent also and it’s awesome! It’s super easy to make, cheap and works amazingly well! Here’s the link for the recipe I use (the recipe for fabric softener is here too). She also has tons of other homemade recipes on her website as well! Hope this helps someone!

      • Laurie

Did you forget to put the link? I would love to have those recipes. Thanks!

    • Jenn

Surf liquid will be on a 3 day sale at Bi-Lo Sunday through Tuesday for $1.99 and there is a 1.00/1 coupon in last weeks redplum and a printable on Redplum for 1.00/1 making it .99! It is a limit of 2 but my Bi-Lo will let you do different transactions.

    • coupons4tt

      Jenny,

I LOVE the item search. I searched in your websites’s search box to see how I can find it in the future and it’s not there. Is this something you can add as a “button.” I’d use this a lot!

LOVE your site. You do an amazing job and congratulations on your newest addition!

    • Stephanie Mullens

Bi-lo Surf is $1.99 and we have a $1 off coupon from the newspaper making it .99 cents!

    • tori729

I don’t buy it unless it’s less than $1 for a 20-25 load container after coupons. I have SO much detergent on my shelf right now!

    • Audrey Ruth

In my area, BJ’s has the best prices on laundry detergent. On top of that, they send out coupons books each month AND accept manufacturers’ coupons along with theirs! I recently bought the great big jugs with dispensers — Tide Sport w/Febreze and Wisk Deep Clean — at excellent prices, plus coupons off. I already had a big box of Tide w/bleach powder (also bought w/coupons). Now I’m stocked up for at least 6 months, probably a year.

      • Audrey Ruth

Correction: Dear hubby reminded me that the laundry detergent I have will last at least two years! This is washing for a family of 7.
