save money on meat

If you are looking for ways to save on meat, one of the best ways is to buy in bulk.  Since many of us can’t go and buy a whole cow, the next best thing is bulk meat orders from companies like Zaycon Foods.  This is a meat seller that runs special sales across the nation.  You order in advance if you want to take part in a sale and then drive buy and pick up your order during the assigned pick up window. Your meat is fresh from the processor and is never frozen!

If you are curious, now is a great time to look into it. They usually have great sales on their chicken. It is a bulk order of 40 lbs.  That’s a lot of chicken for many of us, so go in and split it with a friend.

They also just opened beef and bacon sales in many areas today too!  The beef is the one I’m the most excited about. It also comes in a 40 lb case.  In my area I can’t get extra lean meat for less than $3.99 lb so I’ll gladly take the $40 savings of buying it in bulk.

When you go to pick this up, be ready with freezer bags!  All of their meat comes straight from the processor, so you are getting fresh meat that will need to be individually packaged before freezing.

Just in case you are wondering you can order more then 40 lbs if you want…

    • How often do these events occur? If I don’t/can’t participate this time, how long will it be until I get another chance?

      • I’ve been getting their emails for about 4 months now, so from what I’ve seen the sales come every couple months on a different type of meat.  This is the first beef/bacon sale I’ve seen though so I don’t know how often they repeat a particular type of meat.

        • Thanks Jenny!

        • couponmom

I’m not understanding how it works.  Do we go pick it up at one of their locations or do they ship it?  I’m in Greenville, SC so it looks like they have a storefront somewhere?

          • Klonghall

They bring it to a location, usually a church parking lot, it seems, and you drive through and pick it up.  They will load it into your car for you.  It’s very easy.  You order for the specific location you want to go to.  In Atlanta, they ahve several locations around the city.  I choose the one that is closeset to me.

This is the 3rd time they’ve brought chicken to Atlanta since early October.  (10/4, 11/3, 1/5)  I usually get out my last bag out of the freezer about the same time I get the email that they are coming again.  This is the first time they’ve brought beef & bacon here.

    • beme2004

This sounds great. I registered and the closest one to me is Greenville, SC. The Chicken Event had to be in by the 3rd but there’s still time for the Beef/Bacon.

    • Amy

I’m seeing chicken for $167 per pound.  (I actually placed an order bur am not scheduled to get it until next week.)  Should I have gotten a better price?

      • Amy

        Oops, that’s $1.67

        • Amy

Oops again, yes, I paid $1.69.

    • Cheryl

I just looked at it says chicken is $1.69 a lb for 40 lbs.

    • Bobbie14243

I’ve ordered the chicken before and that was some of the best chicken we have ever eaten. The breasts were huge. I packaged them in up pairs mostly, but did some singles that I sliced up for fajita meat and such. They just did another sale in our area and I will pick up on the 9th. I’m a happy girl! I also got the e-mail for the beef/bacon deal and will probably see about doing the beef, possibly the bacon if I can find someone to split it with.

Have signed up for future events but the cut off for ordering was on Tuesday the 3rd.  Looking forward to savings down the road

    • Klonghall

I picked up my 3rd chicken order yesterday, since they first came to Atlanta back in October.  This really is the best quality chicken we’ve ever had, and the price in unbeatable.  We’ve paid between $1.49-$1.69/lb.  A 40 lb. case sounds like a lot.  I put 4 breasts in a gallon ziploc bag.  Each chicken breast is approx. 1 lb., so I usually have about 10 gallon bags from one case.  They easily stack in the freezer.  (I have an extra fridge/freezer in my basement.  I like that better than just a freezer, bc we use the extra fridge just as much!)  I can get 2 meals, typically, out of each bag of chicken.  So, I have enough chicken right now for about 20 meals. I thaw the bag in a sink full of water, and it thaws in an hour.  I use one that night and the rest at a different meal.  Sometimes I cook all of it one night, and have the chicken ready for another meal later in the week.   I have another friend who cans hers, and loves using it that way.  My friends who live out west have been telling me about Zaycon for awhile.  I’m so glad they’ve made it out here to the SE.  The Zaycon employees who run the pickups are so friendly.  Pick up goes really fast, and they load it in your car for you.  You don’t even have to get out.  I HIGHLY recommend them!  I’m excited that they are bringing more products to us this year.

    • Rkcsilva

I have bought from them before.  It is extremely huge chicken breasts.  I don’t think for me this is good as just eating chicken breasts.  It is ok in the crock pot or cut up for stirfries.  Just thought I would let you all know,  The service was great though, just thought the chicken was old chickens.

      • Gina

I raised the same chickens these farms process and sell, they get that large in under 6 months so they are not old chickens at all.

      • ErinandmalachI

you can easily fillet each breast in half!

    • Dobergal

AH, too bad; nearest location to me is 3 hrs each way (:

    • I’m VERY interested in this, but missed the cut off date for chicken, too.

Looking forward to participating in the beef event, though!

      Thanks, Jenny!

    • Dtjs411

How often do they run the same sale? does anyone know? I like these prices and want to start ordering but want to make sure I order enough to try to last to the next sale… Thanks in advance.

      • Klonghall

        They’ve been to Atlanta 10/4, 11/3 & 1/5 with chicken.

You know, I can get better deals at Costco for the bacon and beef. I was bummed when I saw the price.

      • Dtjs411

What is the price usually at Costco? I have a membership but have never looked into the meat prices…

    • Landdbell

That’s a great deal. I just ordered some my me and my mom. Will try the beef is we are happy with the chicken.  Thanks for posting this!

Jenny thank you for all you do to save us money!

    • Pfrfan

I Ordered my first batch of chicken. Hope it is worth it, from the replys here it sounds like it is. Would like to order the beef, but would like to hear more reviews on it first.

    • I’ve ordered their chicken before and it’s be best quality chicken I’ve ever had. The chicken breasts are the size of your entire hand, but flavorful and tender when cooked.  It’s just hubby and I, and one chicken breast feeds us – we froze them in twos and found it to be too much.  Last time I picked mine up in north Atlanta, but this time I’ve picking up in south Atlanta, so I hope it’s the same distributor because those chicken breasts were so good we ordered two cases this time!

      • Emma Lou E

Great info. & freezer tip since we are just a ‘2-fer” house as well. Thanks!

    • Rjvdw

I pick up my first chicken order next week, I’m excited!  The chicken is way cheaper than I can get at my store.  I am going to place an order of ground beef and bacon to split with a friend – technically I can get 90/10 ground beef at Sam’s Club for $2.84/lb so this is a little more expensive, but the bacon is equal to the very cheapest bacon at Sam’s, so I consider it a better price.  We will try the ground beef and see if it’s worth paying a little more to get a little less fat and the quality that it’s supposed to be!

      • Jmandoki

Be prepared! The chicken breast are HUGE! The beef is really good. I love this service.

      • Bakananeko1989

watch out on the bacon packages as well. a lot have gone to 12 oz packages instead of a ful pound (16 oz)

        • Emma Lou E

3Lb pkgs. thick sliced bacon @ Sam’s is less than per Lb. at store. I just divide and freeze until I need it or cook it all off at once and divide/freeze.

    • Snowdogmom

I don’t see where these prices are really that good unless the markets in your area don’t run similar specials to those in the Charlotte NC area. You can get boneless chicken breasts at Harris Teeter this week for what works out to be $1.66lb with their B1G2 special. Lowes Foods routinely has their boneless chicken breast on sale for $1.99lb. I also have gotten 93% Ground Beef a couple times over the last couple of months at Harris Teeter for $2.99 and if they run out you can get a rain check that never expires. Also you don’t have to buy 40lbs. For me I don’t have the freezer capacity for 40lbs given I’ve already stocked up on super market deals.

      • Rjvdw

No Harris Teeter anywhere near me, unfortunately.  I do find sales for $1.99 chicken breast, but $1.69 saves me $.30 a pound on the cheapest chicken I have found.  You do have to consider all the costs (gas, storage space, etc.) so it’s definitely not always worth it in every situation.  We’ll see how the quality compares!

    • Anonymous

Huh. Glad I’m not the only one who is thinking that there are better prices at retail outlets. Harris Teeter often has sales on ground beef, so their prices seem better than what I’m seeing on the Zaycon website.

    • ajb

Anyone know – how much are chicken breasts and lean gr beef at Costco?

      • Missy

Probably differs regionally… but at Sam’s, chicken breast is 1.99/lb here.

      • Nena

I  shopped at Sam’s Club on Wednesday Jan. 4th.  Chicken breast were 1.99/lb. and 90% lean was 3.19/1b.  I think Costco and Sam’s are about the same.

Ordering is currently closed. Bummer! I was really looking forward to trying their chicken.

    • Bakananeko1989

does anyone know is there are any drop ship charges?

      • Anonymous

no shipping charges.  You pick it up at a designated location. I ordered the chicken and I was very pleased.

    • Couponkelly75

We ordered the chicken from Zaycon twice and are very happy with the chicken.  Pick up is easy and efficient and it doesn’t take too long to pacakge the chicken for the freezer once I get it home.  I wrap each chicken breast individually in foil and then freeze.  The chicken is well trimmed of fat and very tasty.  I highly recommend it!  If you are uncertain that you can use the full 40 lbs, get a couple of friends to go in with you!

    • Loreli

I have just picked up and packaged my second Zaycon order.  I have found that the breasts are HUGE and very moist and flavorful when cooked.  I have a family of four and package 3 breasts/ bag and don’t always eat it all.  I live in the Atlanta area, and they have added many more pick up sites this past sale than the previous time I ordered.  When I ordered back in October, the sales were so good that they lowered the price to $1.49/#.  They changed to an earlier pick up and I think that and the more available pick up sites made for fewer sales??  thus no reduced price this time.  The best price I have seen at my local groceries was $1.79/# but haven’t seen that in over a year. Not sure if I will do the beef sale or not, we are just not big red meat eater:)

    • Barbara

I’m about to place an order for the chicken and realized they have a referral system. Jenny,do you have a referral number or code we could use so you get a credit? Would love to help you out a tiny bit since you help me so much every day! Appreciate you soooo much!

      • Anonymous

Looks like Jenny’s referral code is embedded in the link above…  I think if you use the link, it will give her the credit.  At least that is what I was hoping when I placed my order.

    • Angel in Charleston

Just ordered some chicken. How exciting! Thanks for sharing with us, Jenny. As always, YOU ROCK!

    • rachel

I love their chicken! Be prepared to spend time processing and packaging for the freezer. It is hormone and antibiotic free, with no fillers. The breasts are HUGE! You can def tell a big difference in taste between Zaycon and regular chicken. Made some brown sugar chicken in my crock pot last night. Yummy!

What’s the price for the bacon?  I didn’t see it in Jenny’s post or any of the comments.  Thanks!

    • JJ

Just placed my order for the beef event in Statesville, NC – looking forward to trying this out!  Thanks Jenny!

    • Dawnbakeringram

Be wary of ground beef.  Most of it has things like arteries in it and parts that I consider to be unacceptable for human consumption.  The only one that I know doesn’t have all these “parts” is Kroger’s store ground beef from trimmings.  You’ll pay a little more, but it’s worth it, in my opinion, to NOT eat that garbage!

    • Anonymous

I find that the bulk price of meat is better at Costco and it is the highest grade.  You should compare bulk prices at Costco…

    • dawn

can someone fill me in on pick-up.  is it a weekday and a certain time or an all day event?  do they tell you the date and time when you place an order? i am interested, but concerned about being available for pick up.

    • Jamie

My family receives EBT Benefits here in NC. Does anyone know if they accept this as a form of payment??

    • Lelia

I picked up my chicken order on Tuesday in Pooler (Savannah), Georgia. The process was virtually effortless. Since I wasn’t repacking it right away, the guy took it out of the box and put it in my cooler for me. It comes in one large bag, with four smaller bags inside. The outside bag is sealed, but the four inside bags are not. When I say these breasts are huge, I am making an understatement. They are more the size of turkey breats, imho! They were easy to repackage. I didn’t see any feathers and very little skin and fat left. The ultimate test was tonight when I cooked them. I cooked one and a half breasts for my family of three. My husband is a HUGE eater, and we more than one half of a breast left. And they were very juicy. Boneless, skinless breasts are not may favorite part of the chicken, but these were very tasty. I am still debating on the beef, but I highly recommend the chicken.

    • triciaw

Do you know where the meat and chicken is actually processed?

    • telly in Atlanta

Has anyone tried the ground beef?  It’s supposed to be 93/7, but when I cook it, it has a bunch of grease or liquid.  Normally when I purchase it in the store, it produces very little grease/liquid.  I just want to be sure I’m getting what I paid for and just can’t tell.  What were your results?

    • Guest

Hey y’all – please don’t forget your local Mom & Pop butcher shops.  We have 2 nearby (north metro ATL) and they often have better prices than these on chicken and beef and you can find coupons for them to do even better.  Recently I bought 10lbs of ground beef @ $1.99/lb with a coupon that showed up in my mailbox.  The quality was great.

      • Chlioliver

I live in Gwinnett County….where is the butcher shop you go to?
