We love Bi-Lo around here and now I have another reason added to the list of why.  They’re trying to encourage families to get around the table together even on a tight budget.  Now through the holidays, they’re partnering with nationally-known TV chef, Curtis Stone, to create healthy, family friendly meals for under $10.  Every week they’ll have the $10 recipe in the Bi-Lo weekly ad or online.

They wanted to be able to offer families fresh, seasonal recipes that are affordable and can be made from scratch at home.  We all want to eat healthy and feed our kids well, but sometimes budget and time get in the way.

In our house dessert is a big deal.  I can bribe my kids to clean, fold laundry… you name it, they’ll do it if dessert is the goal.  I know it isn’t the healthiest of options, but to have the work with no complaints… it’s worth it!  We decided to try out the Cooking with Curtis Apple Cinnamon Crumble this week to get some yumminess and a cleaner house.

I picked up all of the ingredients for the Apple Crumble at Bi-Lo and it was really easy to quickly grab everything even with the kids in tow on this trip.  They have everything marked in the store as key ingredients so you can’t miss what you need!

I would definitely make this recipe again, the only thing I would change the second time around is that I would peel the apples.  While not peeling makes it super quick to throw together, so just leave them on if you don’t care.

The Apple Crumble recipe is below, but you can see the full recipe and all of the other easy $10 recipes on the Bi-Lo Cooking with Curtis website.

Easy Apple Cinnamon Crumble

Easy Apple Cinnamon Crumble

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons Southern Home all-purpose flour, divided
  • 3/4 cup Southern Home old-fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup Southern Home granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon Southern Home fine sea salt, divided
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) chilled Southern Home unsalted butter, cut into pieces
  • 2/3 cup packed Southern Home light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Southern Home ground cinnamon
  • 3 Gala or Braeburn apples, cored and cut into 1/2-inch wedges
  • 3 Granny Smith apples, cored and cut into 1/2-inch wedges
  • 2 Golden Delicious apples, cored and cut into 1/2-inch wedges
  • Prestige vanilla ice cream, for serving (optional)

Directions

  1. Get out your cast iron skillet for this one. I had never used mine before, so I was really excited to have an excuse to use it.
  2. Position a rack in the center of the oven. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  3. In a chilled medium bowl, mix 3/4 cup of the flour, oats, granulated sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt to blend. Using your fingers, rub the butter into the flour mixture until moist clumps form. Freeze the topping for about 10 minutes, or until firm.
  4. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, whisk the brown sugar, remaining 2 tablespoons of the flour, cinnamon, and remaining 1/4 teaspoon of salt together.
  5. Add the apple wedges and toss to coat.
  6. Transfer the apple filling to a 10-inch cast-iron skillet, mounding it above the skillet rim. If you don’t have a cast-iron skillet, you can use a 10-inch-diameter saute? pan or deep-dish pie dish.
  7. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple filling. The filling and crumble topping will be domed in the skillet, but will cook down throughout baking.
  8. Place the skillet on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil to catch any juices that will bubble over.
  9. Bake for about 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. Let the crumble cool for about 10 minutes.
  10. Spoon the crumble into bowls and serve warm with the ice cream, if desired.
