Starting today at Office Depot you can get an awesome deal on a really great printer! This is available online or in stores.

So many of you always ask how to save on printer ink and paper.  The paper part is easy… watch the sales and get a ton for FREE.  For the ink my answer is often that it’s time to look at a more economical printer.   We switched to this exact printer almost 2 years ago, spent $60 to get it but haven’t spent a dime since on ink!!  Most laser toner cartridges can print 5,000 sheets and this one has held up to that and maybe more.

The Deal

Brother 2140 Laser Printer $49.99 (reg. $119)

Best Deal online:

  1. Go to Ebates
  2. Add item #674670 (Printer)
  3. Add item #724936 (Erasers)
  4. Total Due: $50.28 (plus tax depending on states)
  5. Get FREE Shipping.
  6. Get back 2% cash back.

Best Deal in Stores:

Print the $5 off $50 purchase Staples coupon.  Most stores will accept competitor coupons. Total will be $44.99 plus tax.

    • We just bought this printer yesterday with a deal at Office Depot!! It is awesome!

      • Ajjnana

I bought Lexmark at Office Max cost around $198 but think I still got a good deal because it comes with 4 inks and also scanner and fax and best of all “World's cheapest ink 4.00 black since thats all I need for coupons

    • I have this printer and LOVE it. I also learned a little trick to make the toner cartridge go a quite a bit longer.

      • SW

Please share your trick with the printer

      • Lexcats6

My friend has one and when it says it's low on toner she takes out the cartridge and shakes it, puts it back in and can print another 100 pages or so. She has actually done it a couple times to the same cartridge before replacing it.

    • Emilysavealot

I bought this printer in March and I havent need to buy toner for it and I print coupons ALOT, its the only thing I use it for. I had a ink printer before hand and let me tell you ink wouldnt last me 2 weeks..UH…so I've SAVED TONS OF MONEY using this printer..LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!!

    • Kareen

does this printer come with ink to start? and does anyone know wht ink usuall costs? Thanks in advance!

      • Denalowenberg

the toner drums are about $50 but it's good for 12,000 pages. I wish I had this one but I needed wireless.

        • There are 2 toner options:

          1,500 pages for $50 or
          2,600 pages for $68

          • Beth

is that the price at staples? I am just wondering if thats really a good deal i have a hp office and I buy the black 920xl which says it prints 1200 pages and the ink costs me about $31

            • No, those are the prices at Office Depot. At Staples:

              1,500 pages for $52 or
              2,600 pages for $72

I do think this is a great deal, however the cost per page is about the same as the printer you have now.

        • Bartontj909

Keep checking online! I bought the wireless version 2170W last week at Office Depot for 89.99. I love it!

        • Denalowenberg

Ooops must have read that wrong. It's still way more than the 350 I get on my printer. Sorry for the mis-info.

        • kim

I buy my toner on ebay for about $25 or less.

      • It comes with ink to start!

        • Kareen

Great! Good to know! Im a nursing student and have sooo many notes to print so this is a real joy for me to be able to purchase!! Thanks for all that you do! You and your family be blessed!

    • Mikenkel

Is this color too or just black n white?

      • Dyerfamily1

I have the same question. Is this color?

      • Y Khotskaya

        It's black only

    • Denalowenberg

I wish I had gotten this post earlier, I just bought a Brother All in one at Best Buy for 69.99 LAST WEEK! Ugh…. I needed a wireless, which mine is, but the pages per drum is amazing on this one!

      • Bartontj909

I just bought the wireless version of this printer last week at Office Depot for 89.99. Love it!!!!

      • beth

hey, just an fyi… im pretty sure best buy price matches other competetors up to two weeks later. I bought a leapster game system for my toddler and paid $60, well then the next week target had them on sale for $40. So I went and bought the one at target and took the best buy one back (it was a birthday present….hadnt opened yet) and when I went to return it the lady at customer service desk said that they would match the price and give me a refund of the difference :) He had already opened the one I bought at target so I had to just return it.

So I would run in and see if they can help you and match the price, never hurts to ask :)

    • Laura

I bought this when you had it advertised under a Staples special a few weeks ago! It's awesome!!!!! SOOOO much better than my HP desktop!

    • If you have problems getting Office Depot to accept the Staples coupon, their policy clearly states that they accept competitors coupons. Scroll down to the bottom and you'll see that it says they accept competitors coupons.

    • Gacouponguy

For anyone having trouble getting to an Office Depot….Best Buy is running same printer for same price this week!!

    • Carla

I need a color all in one. Anyone have a suggestion on one which doesn't suck up the ink and the ink is also not so expensive? Please help!!

      • Denalowenberg

Hi Carla, I just bought the Brother MFC-255cw at Best Buy for 69.99 it’s was on sale. I bought this one because Jenny so highly recommended the brand but I needed a wireless printer, which this is. I don’t think the toner in this model lasts as long but you can get the cartridges for about 4 each ( and you need black, magenta, cyan, and yellow) at inkgrabber.com. I will use ebates and get 14.5% BACK too. This model has a 6000×1200 dpi so the print quality is as good as a model that costs over $200. There is a demo of this product on Brother.com . Hope this helps, this is just the research I did for my purchase.

    • Grwrn

I got it! I will use my HP desktop color printer for my daughters school projects. This one will be for my coupons!

    • Cathy

Better watch using that coupon because Office Depot free shipping is only free after $50.00. The reason I know this is because I order the office supplies at work. The shipping will run at least 9.95 on this pringer if not more because of the weight. You could just add something for around $5.00 would be like free. I also have this printer at home, if you will take some black tape and cover up the clear cover on the toner, its on the right side, your toner will last longer. Just try it the next time your toner light comes on.

      • miatd

can this be done on any toner cartridge….(applying the black tape)

      • Ashley

I think that's why Jenny listed to buy erasers to bring up to $50

    • Caroline

I'm waiting for my worklife rewards from April to come. It feels like it is taking forever! I have $37 in rewards. On the website it says the rewards for that period will arrive between Aug 15-30. Come on OD, please send it to me this week!!!!

    • Lgeorge614

I just bought this printer YESTERDAY from Staples. I looked up your previous post and Staples had it in stock, and I bought it online. I think I did a little better than this price; however I do have to wait for a $30 rebate that may take up to six weeks. Since the original total was over $79.99 I was able to also use a $25/$75 online code. I am SO excited to have this delivered to me on Tuesday. I have held off printing coupons and begrudge the school kids printing notes. No longer!!! :) The wireless version of this was $99 at Staples and there are $25/$100 codes available.

      • Beth

Where did you find your $25/75? I just searched all my Staples emails and I cannot find a recent one! Thanks!

        • Lgeorge614

I do want to mention that I just realized that the printer at Staples is refurbished. The one at Office Depot is apparently brand new. If you would like to know how I found the code, please message me. Add “at juno dot com” to my name above.

        • Ashley

Try retailmenot dot com for coupon codes to online sites

      • Sisteroflove

        what is the 25/100 code?

      • Brooke

Hmm, that is a refurbished one. If I use $10/50 worklife reward coupon and $5 off $50 staples coupon, that would be $35 as opposed to $25 refurbished at staples. You sure can't beat delivery, but I just get the non-refurbished one with Office Depot.

    • Carrie_C

This printer is great! Hubby is a teacher and he's just gone out to buy another one to have in his classroom. We've has ours for at least 6 months and it really is a great printer and the price is less than a toner cartridge.

    • jtrone

My husband and I have the same printer and in 3 years have only replaced the toner once.

    • miatd

so i have a general question on laser printers…i read that you can have it set to “toner saving mode”…can anyone give me any information on this…thanks.

      • Darla

Go to Control Panel, Right Click on this printer. Click on “preferences”. Click the “advanced tab”, select 300 dpi, toner saver mode ON and finally general. This saves on the amount of toner used. HTH

    • Natalie

Last year on Black Friday, I saw handful of laser printers on sale for about $50. I remember because I totally wanted one and didn't get one. I can't get one now, but I'm holding out for black friday this year. I'm sure we'll se a similar deal. At $50 each, it's worth getting a new printer every year, instead of toner.

    • Valerie

Question: I thought that internet coupons had to printed in color. Will the stores take printed coupons that are not in color?

      • Mjknagy

yes, I print all my coupons in black ink.

    • Ann

Just to let everyone know, Staples matches prices as long as your Office Depot has the product in stock. Although, when I purchased mine all they did was ask me if they had it in stock???

    • kellib

We bought this printer the last time it was on sale and I LOVE it!! Just bought new toner for less than twenty bucks at Monoprice!

      • kim

You can also take black electrical tape and tape over the little sensor on the side and get even more life out of your toner. It will say it is empty when it really isn't. This will also save you some money!

        • Amy

I just did that and it worked! Thanks for the tip!

    • Diane

I would be careful about buying any printer from Office Depot. They have a 2 week return policy on printers. We purchased a printer there less than 3 months ago and they wouldn't even exchange it for another printer so now I have no printer. Best Buy is offering this printer for the same price.

    • Darla

I buy my refill toner from this seller on Ebay:

Price $15.78 plus shipping. This is the two pack listing. You can buy larger packs as well.

Also, he sells a reset kit for around $3.50 – this works great.

    • TheChapleigh

whooo hoooo!! just bought this at staples after reading the posts — I had wanted it a month or two back, but held off. Brought in my Best Buy flyer where it's on sale for 49.99, and Staples honored the price (was 119.oo at Staples). Used my 42.oo rebate for the ink cartridges, along with the $5 off $50 Q online at Staples… NICE!!

    • Saver

I just joined the worklife rewards and got a $10 off $50 purchase… must be used in store, but that just made this deal worth going to the store..

    • Suzie

1st…I am not technologically minded. if I buy a laptop computer for couponing, do I need to buy the more expensive wireless printer? How realistic is it for me to think I can hook up & un hook a printer every time I want to print a coupon. I don't have much space. thank you for your help. Suzie

      • Ashley

Ah good question I'd like to know the answer to that as well. I didn't even think of that, but I may be getting a laptop to go along with our reg. computer. But I will be using the laptop for coupons. This way I could print from anywhere in the house(or other places??), right?

        • Tonya

my wireless router is in an upstairs bedroom and I can sit in the basement den and print Of course I can't hear it printing so alot of times I am calling upstairs and asking just to make sure.

      • I would more encourage you to look at getting a good wireless router for your house. Most good routers have the ability to plug any non wireless printer into them and then magically they are now a wireless printer working with any computer in the house.

        • Mdawnrose

This printer is not network ready unless you buy additional cables. Just FYI–it only has a USB port to plug into.

        • Glenda

What do I need to purchase to make this a wireless printer? Someone at Best Buy said they didn't have anything to make it a wireless printer.

      • Jennifer

I have this exact printer and a laptop. Its not bad to use at all. The wires all have specific holes they fit into so you can't really mix them up. It comes with a USB connector so that it plugs directly into my laptop and I can print whatever I want. You just have to get the printer drivers downloaded to your computer, but these can be done only for free or with the software that may or may not come with the package (I don't remember). Its been almost 3 years for me with this one and i only had to buy one cartridge. But I also am working on a dissertation so keep that in mind :)

    • AW

I have this printer, works great!!! Order your ink cartridges (refurbished) from inkjetsuperstore.com for the best price that I've found.

    • Corieb Perry

Thanks sooo much Jenny. I just started working from home and wanted one of these so bad but wasn't willing to pay $119 for it. As soon as I saw this posted today I went right out and got it!

    • Marilyn

Thanks so much!! I went and got one from Best buy today and love it :) it is so fast unlike my old printer

    • Amanda Ferguson86

Staples will honor this one! Just print the webpage out with the price on it and take it to your nearest Staples store!

    • Junesings

I just bought refilled cartridges for my printer from Cartridge World for a fraction of what they cost at the office stores and they work great. I like the recycling aspect too.

    • Rachee17

HOORAY!!! I've been waiting for this printer to go on sale!.. Picked it up today and used the staples Q for $5 off $50.

    • Cleopard

office depot has a $10 off $50 purchase coupon – i found it on couponcabin.com and that took me to Amazon. I am new to this coupon thing, so forgive me if this isn’t right.

    • Joe

Make sure you read the reviews on this printer at Office Depot. It sounds great and I would use it for home use, but not business. It does not print 5000 pages, but only 1500 or 2600 depending on the cartridge refill you buy. I think it would be a great price if you just print coupons and some small home projects, but as a writer, I would not recommend it as I print a lot and the ink for this is not as cheap as some laser printers.

    • Kelleyroo

One of our printers just ran out of ink. I am SO GLAD you posted this because for a little more than the price of replacing the ink I got this instead! Very excited to not have to worry about replacing ink all the time :)

Thank you so much for everything you do Jenny!

    • Lori

Today 8/23 Ebates is offering 32% cash back today from 123inkjet.com I remember several people saying they are a great options for toner on the printer you are always raving about. Thought it might be a good deal to post. Use code SMRTSHP and get 15% off and free shipping (this is not the code they are advertising that one you have to spend $55 to get free shipping)
Grand Total was $29.69 plus I’ll get the $9.50 back from Ebates! That’s very cheap toner :)

    • Nclick1110

where is the staples coupon… i went to the website, but did not see the coupon

      • April Ligon

I saw the coupon today. It’s on the front page of this weeks ad! http://weeklyad.staples.com/staples/default.aspx?action=entryflash&adref=%20staples_right_hand_nav&cm_sp=marketing-_-Weekly%20ad%20header-_-weekly%20ad%20header
Paste that link to your web browser by highlighting it and right clicking. Go down to copy then go up to your web browser and right click, then hit paste. (Some people don’t know how to do this. Just thought I would throw that in there!)

BTW, The office depot that I ended up at in order to get the coupon was in Birmingham Alabama and they refused the $5.00 Staples Coupon! Just FYI! Hope that helped:)

      • April Ligon

Go to the Staples Home Page, then go to Weekly Ad, The coupon will pop up on the screen on the left hand side of the page. I sent you another email with the actual link but the system will need to approve it before posting because I used the actual Staples link:)

    • Heather

I just bought this printer today! I used the $5 staples coupon, but I also took in 13 old toner and ink cartridges that I found when I cleaned out my office! They give you $3 each in reward money. So my grand total for a laser printer was $6 + tax!!

      • Wow! I wish I would of know about the turning in the cartridges! I have probably a good 4 or 5 of them! But $55 for the printer with a 2 year warranty…cant beat it!

      • Qponcassi

I didnt know you could turn in cartridges and redeem them the same day either. Thx for the tip

      • April Ligon

I have a question about that… The reward money. I have two gallon size bags of these things. Do they send the rewards to you or do you get it right then? I've been wandering about that. Thanks!

    • Mamarea47

Frustrating experience at Office Depot. Had Worklife Reward $10 off/$50 but could not use because printer is a “tech” item. Then gave cashier $5/$50 Staples Q and was told they did not accept. Cashier thought they accepted competitor's but she said 3 mgrs told her otherwise. Checked corporate Q policy and they do accept competitor's Q. Called store mgr and she told me to come back and they would accept the Staples Q — but that means another trip.

      • April Ligon

I had the same experience today but had such a hard time even finding an Office Depot who still had some that I was happy to just find one! The price is $70.00 off the original price!! It's a great buy and I know it's frustrating but as couponers I am sure we are very used to frustrations when using coupons;)

    • Does anyone know what settings i should set the printer to save the most ink? And what exactly is the difference between the drum and toner?

      • Knelson2500

On mine, I clicked printer settings under the control panel and changed it to 300 dpi and the toner saver option. I just got mine yesterday, so I can't be sure how much this changes the usage, but it is supposed to help. Good luck!

        • vw88

It should save it alot. I too put mine on 300 and put the toner saver. When your toner does start to run out or printer stops because it needs changed…pull it out and shake it. It will continue to work awhile longer. We do this at work and it works well.

    • Qponcassi

I'm new to the site but I went out & got this printer today. Let's see how mu couponing experience goes.

    • Eae1959

I am using an HP Printer now and was told today that this Laser Printer does not come with a cable and that would be another $20…..This was at Staples who will price match as long as OD had product in stock..Staples also has printer paper on sale with mail in rebate paper is 50 cents…..Not sure what kind, I left after being told I had to spend another $20 for a cable…..Is everyone buying a cable???

      • April Ligon

I simply used my HP Printer cable with my new Brother! They are interchangable! You shouldn't have left! Hopefully when you go back there will be some in the store! I had a hard time finding an Office Depot that still had them!!! Best of luck! You can just change them out when you want to do color copies or I find them all the time at the local thrift store for little to nothing, just a thought! I suggest taking the chord with you to match them or a closeup because sometimes they are different but the Brother and HP are the same.

    • Eae1959

For those using ink cartridges, I have been using the same cartridge at least four times, My husband drills a small hole in the side, we bought a $5 bottle of ink that comes with needle and we have been refilling cartridges for several years. I buy 3-4 per year, the cartrige will everntually wear out and need to be replaced. Ink was found on Ebay… I print alot and this has worked well and saved me tons in cartridges. Cover hole with little piece of tape.

    • Maloneathens

I use a continuous ink system for my HP Photosmart printer. I got it on eBay for around $40 (but some are as high as $80). I used mine almost a whole year before I went through the black ink and went 16 months before I needed color ink (which I also got on eBay– $20 for all 6 colors- one of them being black ink). MAJOR money saver as I print lots of coupons, pictures, and have to print a LOT of paperwork for my job.

    • April Ligon

I got my printer and I am so thankful to you for making me aware that this was out there! I can't tell you how much money I have spent on ink in the last month alone! Now I can use that one for photo's and color copies only!!!! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!
BTW, I am in Alabama and the closest store was already sold out today!! I had to drive an hour away to Birmingham just to get one AND they refused to let me use the Staples coupon for $5.00 off and they added that they don't take coupons on printers and computer related items!! That was the ONLY issue that I ran into; however, I am just HAPPY TO HAVE FOUND ONE!!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you- AGAIN!! My HP also thanks you!

    • Stasia08

Does anyone know how much it costs to replace ink for this printer?

      • Eae1959

The toner cartridge runs about $50 unless you can find one on Ebay..just make sure its an original and not a refill. I asked if they ever have sales on cartridges…..big NO…
I cant understand why no one has stated they are buying cables for this printer as well, I'm confused how they are making these things work..

        • vw8

They are probably using their old cables. That is what I have always done. You don't need to buy a new one everytime you buy a printer. I sell my old printers with out it, because the cable is worth more than the printer.

          • Eae1959

Did exactly that after I went back this morning and talked to the manager, we usually get printers when we've purchased computers…Its up and working great right now.

      • vb88

You have to understand this toner will print many more sheets/coupons until it needs replaced than an ink cartridge. This one I believe prints 4000 sheets of paper. I also print with it on toner saver and reduce the dpi. By doing this you save toner. I have printed almost a whole ream of paper and have hardly used any toner. It is only a Black and white printer but I love it!

    • Michelle Iddings

Thanks for the post! This is a good deal then buying ink AGAIN! I also had a $10 coupon for Office Max that Office Depot honored. Now I have a wireless printer and scanner, plus an inexpensive printer for my coupon needs

    • Sarah

The specs online say that this printer comes with “starter-capacity” cartridges. Does anyone know how many pages these print? Is is the 1500 page ability that another commenter mentioned?

    • Margaret

Just got this printer delivered today! Love it. So glad you let us know about this deal. I was going out to pay $50 for ink for my inkjet and decided to get this printer instead. So glad! Thanks.

    • Tarlee

I am so excited! Mine was delivered today!!!! Can't wait to set up my new “coupon office”. Hubby is tired of me over running his desk – so I get my own!!! YAY!

    • Mdawnrose

Just an FYI folks–bought this from OD and it does not connect to my network with the included cables-:( I'll have to gt additional cables to make it network ready. Also, too funny–OD shipped the printer separate from the eraser–the eraser came BY ITSELF in a HUGE box!!!! Literally a 12X12X8 box with ONE pink eraser int he middle!!!!

    • Faye

One thing worth mentioning about these printers – the toner lasts a LONG time and you can refill it easily at home for very little money. When the drum itself goes back (which is in the 20,000 page range), don't buy a new drum. These cost over $100. It would be better to buy two new printers on sale. HTH :)

    • Nicole

I just called my Office Depot and they have one left, so I am on my way to pick it up. Also, you may want to call your Staple in your town, because I called there as well and they are selling them for the same price still.

    • Ashleyw81

Just FYI, you can get this same price at Best Buy! I got mine yesterday, my fiance hooked it up, and it works great!
