Going Nuts? I can help you understand coupon terms and abbreviations

I’ve run into so many people recently who do all their grocery shopping at Walmart. While Walmart does have the lowest prices on some house brands, if you are someone who prefers name brands, you are much better off shopping at a regular grocery stores that runs actual sales.

To prove this fact to you, we have started comparing prices at Publix vs. Walmart. I’m listing the Buy One Get One (BOGO) price at Publix as well as the same item at Walmart at the current price. If there is a comparable item under Walmart’s house brand, I’ve included that price as well, because going generic will sometimes be cheaper.

Why compare just sale prices?

The #1 comment I get on price comparisons is that it’s not “fair” to only compare the sale prices at Publix.

Our goal around here to ALWAYS save money on groceries, and the best way to do that is to shop sale prices.  If it’s not on sale, your goal is to not buy it.  Comparing full price items at Publix would be a silly waste of time because you shouldn’t be buying the full price items anyway!

Note: The Publix sale prices are from the Publix ad starting 12/10 or 12/11.

Comparing Prices at Publix vs. Walmart

Of the 15 items I’m comparing prices on today, Publix beat the name brand price at Walmart on 14 of the 15 items and beat the Walmart house brand on 7 of the 14 items.  The big results though are the amount paid and Publix beats even the house brands by $9!!

Assuming you bought each of these deals you would have paid:

$33.20 at Publix
$60.63 at Walmart
$42.16 at Walmart on house brand items

If you are a name brand shopper and you decided to start shopping at Publix, you would save $27 this week on these items. If you do that every week, you’d save $100+ over the course of a month.

Publix won last week too.  Check out that price comparison.

This time of year can be so hectic, and sometimes once the holidays are over, trying to get back to normal life can be difficult. I like doing little things here and there to try to reduce future chaos, so I came up with a plan of things I can do as I’m in my home this month. These are 10 tiny tasks to do now to make January easier!

10 Tiny Tasks to Do Now to Make January Easier

                  Delete 50 e-mails

If you’re someone who lets things pile up, this will feel really good. Consider using Unroll.me in the new year. It will gather all your emails each day into a daily digest.

Choose a financial goal for January

December can be an expensive month, so many people like having some kind of goal for January. You could do a no-spend month or week, set a goal for spending in one category (like groceries), or choose not to buy certain items in the month of January (clothes, etc.).

                  Clean out bags

This includes backpacks, purses, and even car consoles (which aren’t technically bags). Throw things away and restock where necessary.

                  Back things up

You don’t have to back everything up! Just choose one thing, like financial documents or your photos.
