    Tax Time

    tax time

I have a confession – I love to do our taxes.  I always start to work on them as soon as my husband brings his last paystub home and most years I am ready to hit the e file button long before the official forms arrive from employers.  (Don’t worry I wait till they are here).

If you have thought about doing your own return:
    1.  You can always attempt to do them for free, so if things get very muddled and you still need help you won’t have spent anything.  You do your return online for free and you only pay to submit it!

    2.  It really is very easy!  (Mind you we don’t have 2 homes, off shore accounts etc.)

The Best Savings I can find on Turbo Tax online – 25% off:
    1.  Go to this page at Fidelity

    2.  Click on “Start or Continue your return with Turbo Tax”

    3.  Click whether or not you are a Fidelity customer (you don’t have to be to get the discount to just answer honestly).

    4.  It will then take you to the Turbo Tax site where you get 25% off all the prices – even 25% off the state e file (another $26 dollars)

We are actually customers of Fidelity and have used this discount for a few years now.  It is the only company that offers 25% off all the products.

**If by chance you have a State Farm Banking account you can get Turbo Tax FREE (the first 25,000 to register to use it).  Note – this is for banking customers only.**

    Why Turbo Tax?
I know there are a lot of Tax prep programs out.  We have used a few other ones.  I am mentioning Turbo Tax mostly because it is the easiest to do all by yourself.  It actually treats you like you are stupid sometimes so that you can’t mess up.

If you want to use another program (because some are a lot cheaper).  Here is a tip: Do your taxes twice! We used Taxact one year and it was not as easy, I was a little concerned that I had missed things so…  I went to Turbo tax entered everything there (for FREE) made sure the numbers matched TaxActs numbers and then went ahead and filed with the TaxAct.  You won’t pay anything to Turbo tax and you have the peace of mind that the numbers matched!!

      Publix Coupon Policies

      on 12.30.2008 at 4:29pm
      14 Comments

I have seen over the recent weeks a lot of questions and issues with coupons at Publix so this is an attempt to answer questions and to help resolve issues. I have also been reminded recently of some policy differences by store.

Publix policies for Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee:

      1. They double coupons that are .50¢ or less. Doubling only applies to manufacturer’s coupons, not store or competitor coupons. Publix does not limit the number of like/same coupons that you can double.
      2. Publix accepts printable coupons. Publix does not accept printable coupons for a free item if the value is over $5.
      3. You may use one Publix store coupon and one manufacturer’s coupon per item, unless either coupon explicitly prohibits it.
      4. They do not accept any expired coupons.
      5. You may use 2 coupons for B1G1 sale items if you buy 2 items. You may also use a store and manufacturer coupon for each item as well.
      6. With B1G1 sale items you do not have to purchase 2 items, each will ring up as half price.
      7. Publix does not have a specific policy limiting coupons. The register is programmed to require a manager’s approval when the coupons total over $50. The register is also programmed to accept no more coupons (store and manufacturer together) than items. If you are using a store and a manufacturer coupon for every item in your cart, you will need manager intervention.
      8. Competitor coupons: (This is the big issue)
The official policy states that stores can accept competitor coupons, but leaves it up to the individual store managers to decide the specifics i.e. what stores, and usage guidelines. In general competitor’s coupons are treated like store coupons. They will not double and can be used in conjunction with a manufacturer’s coupon, but not in conjunction with a store coupon**.

      a. **Some stores will accept a competitor and a store coupon for the same item, as well as a manufacturer coupon.

      b. Some stores will only take coupons from other grocery stores while others (fewer) will also accept drug store coupons.

      c. Check with your store customer service or manager for the actual store policy on competitor coupons.

Publix policies for Florida, and Coastal Georgia:
You guys get the bad deal with Publix and coupons. Most of the above does apply in FL and coastal GA, so I am posting the differences only

      1. They do not double any coupons
      2. Many stores will not let you use coupons for both items that are B1G1. You can still use one store and one manufacturer, but not 2 of both. – This is actually against corporate policy if you would like to call and complain about your store and try to fight it then go for it!
      3. To get the sale price on B1G1 items you must buy 2 items, one is full price and the second is free.

      One more thing:
Keep in mind as you use competitor coupons that this is Publix just taking money off your bill. They will not get this money back. Please do not abuse this policy!! In terms of Food Lion coupons they state Limit 1, please do not take in (5) $5 off $30 coupons and do multiple transactions or take in numerous coupons for the same item.

              Using Savings For Good

              using savings for good

I have written on this a long time ago, but felt today was a good day to bring it up again…

If you follow Southern Savers shopping lists or hunt out your own deals you are probably getting very stocked on the things you need and also pretty stocked on free things you might never need.  I want to encourage you to start something new in your house.

When you shop and see something on the list that is free, even if you don’t need it I encourage you to get it.  There are exceptions of course, but most of the time there is always someone who can use it.  A way to make this easy on you is to put a box in the bottom of your pantry or somewhere out of the way and put the little things you grab in there as you get them.  When the box is full deliver it somewhere.  There are so  many places that I can’t really make a list, but to generalize: homeless shelters, women’s abuse shelters, children’s homes, church ministry…

              A few ideas:

              • Every time you go to Publix take the Food Lion printable to get one free Gerber baby food – you probably have a friend who would love the gift or any charity location can use it!
              • Even if you don’t like or need any more free toothpaste, shampoo etc. – toiletries are the biggest needs at most places
              • Food is always needed at Harvest Food Banks especially during the winter

You can do this as small or large as you like.  If you just shop one store there are usally 2-4 free things each week, grab one to give away and you already have a box bigger than most people give every year.  If you shop all the drugstores and a grocery store then you can have free things coming out of your ears.

Click here to explore charity as a reason for saving and to get an idea of what items are needed!

                New Coupons.com coupons

Coupons.com has continued to load new coupons every few days. If you haven’t checked recently here are some of the new ones:

-$1 off 6pk of Quilted Northern
-$1 off any Kraft or POLLY-O String Cheese
                (we rarely get cheese coupons)
-$2 off Neutrogena Hair care product
-.40/1 any All or Surf Detergent
-$1 off Shedd’s Country Crock Side Dish
(great to stack with FL printable)
                B1G1 Meaty Bone products
.50 off any Tilex Mold and Mildew Remover

These are all coupons that we haven’t gotten recently in our inserts or are higher value than our inserts. If you think you will use any printable coupon you should always print it when you see it rather than when you plan to use it… it might not be there later.

                  Watch your ECB’s…

Just a warning before you head out for the big Sunday/Monday deals.  Watch your ECB’s on the Sally Hansen Nail Polish.  For me they rang up cheaper than the $5.99 and did not print any ECB!

Sadly I was at a store that had no idea how to do the new manual printing so I get to call CVS in the morning.

You can still buy them and they will be free, just be ready to make them manually give you the ECB’s or to have to call the Customer Service when you get home.

I didn’t buy everything that was free but most of the items and all the other ECB’s printed without problems.
