Going Nuts? I can help you understand coupon terms and abbreviations

It’s a small ad for CVS for the first part of next week.  I would focus on the free contact solution and the diapers if you need them.  I have worked up a small scenario, though it is nothing special for just the weekly deals.  I would personally recommend going in for the the black Friday deals and if you need the diapers get those then, I worked up a big plan for that.  It is a lot more than my usual 3 or 4 transactions but the goal was to keep the out of pocket very low!

does anybody know how many times you can use the get 4 ECB when you spend $20 card?

I cant find any info on it.
  • kelli
I'm pretty sure that it's just once. Once you've used the coupon, the bottom of your receipt will say "Voucher, Spent 20 Get 4 EB" then it says that the balance is one and offer limit reached.
  • kelli
does anyone know if the limits have really changed on some of the items? I've heard that the degree is limit 2 now and the colgate 360 is limi4.
  • kelli
for anyone who’s still going to go shopping tonight.. I confirmed, degree limit is 2, colgate 360 is 4.
  • melissa
where did you hear that? that would be great!
  • kelli
I read it on another website
  • Michelle
On the Just For Men deal...I found the website with the $2 off coupon and a mail-in-rebate...I paid with ECB's for the rest of the amount...will the manufacturer honor the mail-in-rebate and send me $6.29 even though I paid with ECB's? The receipt doesn't specifically show what coupon was used for what item...
  • kelli
I was wondering the same thing. I asked the question on another website and someone responded saying that she'd sent the same rebate in when she'd paid for it with ECBs and she got the money back. Also, they'll most likely send you the full $8.29 back.
  • melissa
we have no need for this product, but i was wondering - should i buy it with the coupon and ecbs just to make real money back?

what are folks doing with the product?
  • Michelle
I don't have any need for it either, I got it simply because it was a money maker...I feel like I can eventually come across someone who would appreciate it, so I will save it until then.
  • Sue
I waited til today to go to CVS along with my other Black Friday shopping. I was afraid that they would be out of everything, but as it turned out they were putting up stock so I was able to get everything on my lists except the Bic Razor. While shopping I noticed that they had MANY Airwick Freshmatic Starter Kits. I asked the cashier about it and she checked the flyer but they were not in it as a sale item. She then checked further and found that they are on sale for $5.99. I had just left Fred's where I bought 2 (all they had), using my $5 Q's from SS 11/15. I did 4 tranactions, three with my card and one with my husband's. Here's what I did:

    I started with $21 ecbs
    #1
    2 Blade @ $2.50
    1 Contact Solution @ $8.99
    1 Schick @ $9.99
    1 Ear Buds @ $6.99
    Used:
    $2 off Blade
    $1 off Contact Solution
    $5 off $30
    $21 ecbs
Paid $2.88 oop (a little more than planned but my insert did not have the Schick Q)
    Got $23.98 ecbs

    #2
    1 Hershey Rolo @.89
    1 M&M King @ 1.59
    3 Herbal Essence @ 2.99 = 8.97
    1 Colgate @ 2.99
    1 St. Ives @ 3.99
    1 Vaseline Infusion @ 7.99
    1 Degree @ 4.00
    Used:
    Free Mars Candy
    $1 off Herbal Essence
    1 BIGI Herbal Essence
    75¢ off Colgate
    $1 off Vaseline Infusion (CVS)
    $1.50 off Vaseline Infusion (M)
    $5 off $30
    $16.99 ecbs
    Paid: $1.88 (1.65 was tax)
    Got 23.88 ecbs

    #3
    2 Airwick @ 5.99 = 11.98
    1 Blade @ 3.99
    1 Blade @ 3.49
    1 Colgate @ 2.88
    Used:
    2 $5 off Airwick
    $2 off Blade
    75¢ off colgate
    9.99 ecbs
    Paid $1.56 (1.46 was tax)
    Got $4 ecbsmore
Ended with $26.47 ecbs on this card 5.47 than I started with.

    #4 (husband's card) started with $15 ecbs
    1 Vaseline Infusion @ 7.99
    1 MP3 player @ 24.99
    Used
    $1.50 off Vaseline Infusion (M)
    $1 off Vaseline Infusion (CVS)
$4 ecbs with $20 purchase card
    $5 off $30
    $15 ecbs
Paid $12.37 (kinda high but it was the mp3 player)
    Got $16.99 ecbs
I needed the MP3 player for a Christmas present. This way it cost me very little because I finished with $1.99 more in ecbs than when I started.

    Totals:
Before Sales & coupons: $164.69 plus tax
    Sale prices: $118.10
    Paid $12.78 plus $5.91 tax = $18.69
Ended with $7.46 more in ecbs than I started with so this trip actually cost me $11.23
    NOT BAD!
  • Kelley
I just got back and yes, some items were gone but most were still available. I just bought everything in one transaction... did not feel with dealing with multiple transactions! Anyway, the right guard ecb does not appear to be there and my $1.59 candy bar did not print ...
  • Heather Dixey
all of a sudden i'm wondering if i need filler items at cvs or is that just walgreens? i have three items three coupons and i'm wondering how many of my ecbs i can use without needing a filler item. but then i thought maybe i don't need one? that would be super:-)
  • kelli
ECBs are like cash, you don't need a filler item to use them.
  • kelli
I went back to CVS again today and did 2 more transactions, because apparently the 3 I'd done earlier wasn't enough. My fiance really wanted the huge whitman's sampler, so I got it for him and I needed to get another Dyna Pep. I think I did a pretty good job.

    Transaction 4:
    1 Tums = $3.99
    1 Caramello = $.89
    1 Just For Men = $8.29
    1 St. Ives = $3.99
    1 Dyna Pep = $4.99
    - $5/$20
    - $2 off Tums (store coupon)
    - $2 off Just for Men
    - $13 ECBs
    subtotal: $.15, tax: $.69, total: $.84, saved: $24.20, earned: $19.17 (1, .89, 8.29, 3, 4.99, 1)
*I tried over and over again to get the Tums coupon to print, but no luck. Also, I couldn't find the St. Ives coupon in my inserts. :( $1 ECB for green bag tag this transaction. :)

    Transaction 5:
    1 Whitman Sampler = $14.99
    2 Hershey's Kisses = $3.49, bogo
    2 Gold Emblem candy = $.99 each
    - $5/20
    - (2) $1 off Hershey's Kisses
    - $1 off 2 Gold Emblem candy
    - $12 ECBs
    subtotal: $.46, tax: $.36, total: $.82, saved: $33.49, earned: $0
*This was actually somewhat painful for me. It's not very often that I spend that many ECBs and get nothing back.

    Updated Summary:
    Spent: $4.82 ($3.42 tax)
    Used: $63.99 ECBs
    Earned: $77.72 ($13.73 profit)
    Saved: $142.32
  • Rebecca
I tried to find the St. Ive's q too but no luck. I'm in Charlotte and got the Observer. :(
  • melissa thornton
I went today before heading to the in-laws for the day. Today was only my 2nd time trying the CVS system.

The CVS had everything in stock at 11 AM!!! I thought they were out of the mens razors, but the manager found some for me. WOOT!!!

I had 6 transactions and the cashier was very patient and helpful. She says she works the system too.

I had just 5 ECBs to begin and I also had a $5 off $30 printed coupon. I ended up spending $24 OOP total, but came home with $17 ECB after my last transaction. I know I could've done better, but as I am new...I dont yet have things down.

Most of my OOP total came in the 1st transaction as I was trying to use that $5 off $30 and I only had $5 ECBs.

I dont know what folks are talking about when they mention the $4 for buying $20 - how do I do that??? is it a coupon out there somewhere???

I guess I am happy, but I will feel better when my total OOP is better.
  • melissa
I was SO annoyed at my CVS OOP that I took 3 things back and got a refund for $23. So my OOP ended up being less than $1. And I still had lots of stuff left at home - the razors (3), the shampoo and hair gel (2 each) , the candy (4), the toothpaste and toothbrushes(2 each), the deodorant and the body wash. I also have 17 ECBs left. Oh, and I found the get 4 ECBS when you spend $20 coupon - you have to ask for a special catalog for Christmas and its inside that catalog.

Does anybody know if you can use that Q just once per CVS card???
  • kelli
the spent $20, get $4 ECBs is in the christmas catalog. some stores have these behind the counter, some have them near the sale papers, I've also seen them near the newspapers. I'd just ask someone at your store where you can get one.

I just found out that my fiance wants the giant whitman's sampler... he wanted the worlds largest reeses 2 weeks ago. I'm spending way too much money on candy this month. Now I've gotta figure out if I find something else to buy that's a good deal so that I can use a $5/$20. I wish he had told me he wanted it earlier, before I bought everything else!
  • emily
the cvs in smyrna is great and they still have almost all the bf items left. i just spent $26, got a ton of stuff, still have the rebate for the touch of grey to do and i have $4 ECB. also, the sales associate gave me the ad for next week. it feels so good to save so much. thanks for all you do to help us save for our families.
  • kelli
here's the breakdown of what I did.... I had everything planned out to the penny but my store didn't have the Bic razors, so I had to refigure everything in the store.

  • Sue
You did great! Where did the $5/$20 Q's come from?
  • kelli
It's a printable coupon from a the beginning of the month. I'm pretty sure it's available anymore. :(
  • Sue
Did you have any trouble using it? I thought that I had read that there had been some problems with it. I mayhave one.
  • kelli
I've heard that there has been some trouble as well. I know for a while they were all printing the same number. I haven't had any trouble with them at all.
  • Stephanie B.
My CVS was out of the Bic Soleil razors as well! I was not happy about that and also had to do some quick refiguring in the store.
  • kelli
I had hoped to get at the store right when it opened but I was exhausted last night and went to sleep before figuring out my plan... I didn't get to the store until around 9:30, they opened at 8. I guess if I had been there earlier, I probably would've gotten everything. I got a rain check for the Bic, so I'll get it later.
  • Kimberly
I enjoyed that! I rarely do cvs, so had no starter ecbs, but I got 2 diapers, wipes, toothpaste, 2 herbal essences, 2 candy bars, remote, lotion, spinbrush, razor, & razor refills for $20 before tax. And $2 ecbs for next time.
  • Amy
there is a cvs ad mag at the front counter with a coupon that will make a $4 ECB print when you spend $20...so you want to use that coupon first...all transactions went very smoothly...LOVE CVS!
  • meghan
I just got home from my CVS and they did not have the Right Guard Sport 3D as a deal. I still think I did pretty good for a first timer....here is what I got.

    2 pks of Huggies Diapers
    1 bag of Huggies Wipes
    1 Herbal Essence Shampoo
    1 Herbal Essence Conditioner
    2 Herbal Essence Hair Spray
    1 Vaseline Sherr Infusion lotion
    2 Colgate Toothpaste

Total OOP: 16.46 (includes tax & a $1 donation to St Jude)
And I came home with $11.00 ECBs....

    So...how did I do?
  • kelli
great job! a lot better then I did on my first cvs trip. :)
  • Sue
Did you have any ECBs to start? If not, you did great!
  • meghan
Great bc no, I didn't have any ECBs. This was my first ever trip CVSing. =)
  • kelli
I'm getting ready to go, my store has been open for an hour and a half... hopefully there's still some stuff for me to buy! :) I'll let everyone know how it goes when I get back.
  • Sue
For those who have not worked out their scenarios, there is a $1 q for Vaseline Infusion in the last Reinventing Beauty mag, if you haven't already used it. CVS q can be stacked.
  • Christine
Just came back from CVS. Did 4 separate transactions.

    7.99 Sheer infusion lotion

    Total OOP: .72
    Received 7.99, 1.59, 4.00 ECB

.99 (3) caramels (used as fillers since Just for Men was off .60)

    Total OOP: 1.61
    Received 8.29, 2.00, 5.00 ECBs
(Just for Men thru me off and I wasn't thinking thru and in the end only needed 1 caramel as a filler but that's all ok since with all the stuff I got, it's a great deal!)

    6.99 Remote control
    6.99 Phillips earbuds
    Used 5.00, 8.29 ECBs

    Grand total: 6.03 OOP
    Total ECB Left: 6.99, 2.00, .89 ECBs

Thanks so much Jenny! I've saved so much at CVS.
  • pharmSCgirl
Wow! You did great! I can't wait for the morning and I hope nothing is out of stock b/c then my scenarios are really going to be thrown off. Thanks for posting this. I like seeing how well people do before I go. Maybe there won't be many people there when they open up in the morning and I can do my multiple transactions.
  • pharmSCgirl
Is everyone planning on grabbing a buggy, getting all items needed for each scenario, then doing multiple transactions at the register and rolling ECBs? I just have a hard time doing this and people tell me to not feel guilty. I just figured out 6 scenarios for my boyfriend and he has a total of 6 and will only spend a little over $5 OOP. It's awesome that we can do this but I feel as if I'm taking advantage of ECBs and I don't want the store to loose money and end up getting rid of the ECBs. What are other's thoughts? Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!
  • Carol
CVS is NOT losing money. This ECB program has been in existence for more than 5 years an they WANT you to use their program...It brings your business to their store. As long as you are following the program rules and regs you are fine. A company is in business to make money and while I would like to think CVS just loves me, they don't; they love my money lol...They are national and have corporate buyers who work with manufacturers and they get a great price on the items they buy to put "on sale"....Trust me you and I won't break the CVS bank anytime soon.
  • Christine
I just came back from CVS tonight and did 4 separate transactions. I grabbed all my stuff first. Wanted to make sure everything was there. Then asked the cashier if I could do 4 separate transactions. I pulled what I needed out of the cart for each transaction. My CVS is really great about that. Never gave me any problems and never made me feel like anything or guilty. That is their system and I'm following the rules so I shouldn't need to feel guilty. It just makes it easier to do it all at the register than having to go back and forth, unless there's a line than I'd probably go to the end of the line.
  • Val
Hi everyone, well I got my hubby to go with me, we left @ 1115, went to walmart 1st for a few items that we needed & checked out the tvs . we want to get on on Fri. Then we went to Walgreens, they said that their new sale does not start till Fri. Then went to CVS, very nice fellow said yep its after midnight, & he went & got me a new ad. He was very helpful & showed me where some of the items were. I made 2 piles, 1 for me & 1 for my hubby. I am new to this. I had all of my Qs organized, but I wasnt thinking & & had him ring up too many items in the 1st transaction, then I got better. He actually offered to void out some items in the 1st trans for me. Then I went& had my hubby open his own # , & did his trans. I didnt know that the ECB need to be kept separate for his CVS #. But thats ok. I have quite a few to use, but they dont expire till 12/26. Will go back tmo for a few more items that I didnt get tonight. Good Luck. Val S.
  • melissa
    ugh.

i dont have all the Qs mentioned and i cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the deals to work excluding those products to have a low OOP.

i dont have the degree Q - mine is for $1.50 off 2
i dont have the st ives Q
i dont have the colgate total Qs

I do have the rest AND the $5 off $30 though.

anybody able to help this newbie? i am beyond frustrated.
  • pharmSCgirl
How many ECBs are you starting with? If you don't have any then it is going to be challenging and it would be good to start off with just buying an item out of pocket and then just keep rolling the ECBs. Just remember that you don't have to get everything and to be honest, I spend time working out my scenarios and then get to the store and they are out of stock of an item so my scenarios are thrown off. Good luck!
  • chris
me and my wife started with 24 ecbs and got all items on bf ad and a few other things and still have 20+ecbs spent less then 10 bucks oop and most of that was on tax gotta love CVS
  • melissa thornton
I am starting with $5 ECBs...
  • pharmSCgirl
I would suggest starting with the first scenario that Jenny has buying the Complete Contact Solution and then just keep going from there rolling those ECBs over. Good luck! I went this morning and there were not many people in the store at all so today is a good day to go. Happy Thanksgiving!
  • Melanie
Went tonight at midnight at the Lake Murray Blvd Columbia store. They had everything in stock. My only glitches were: the Herbal Essences did not ring up correctly so beware of that. They did not ring up for sale, and the ECBs did not print. Also, I bought the wrong Bic soleil cartridges. The only Bic Soleil item for sale is the starter without cartridges, according to the ad. My store did not have the items tagged, so that created a challenge. I am really happy with my haul! As we were leaving the store, my husband showed me the new coupon kiosque. I am excited about that!
  • Binkle
Yeah, I had the same issue with the Herbal Essence. Some rang up 2.99 others 4.20. I had to go back twice to finally end up with the 2.99 ones. Even though the ones I picked were the 12 oz that was supposedly on sale.
  • pharmSCgirl
It sounds like you did great tonight with few setbacks. I hope I have this kind of luck in the morning. Did you do several transactions and do you find that the cashiers get annoyed with seperate transactions?? I hate when the managers are up front and give hateful looks like you are doing something wrong. I usually find myself doing one transaction and then driving to the next CVS to do another one b/c in Columbia they are pretty much on every corner. However, I am at home in Boiling Springs, SC and there is one here and several spaced out in surrounding areas. I guess this is just something that I will have to get over. Happy Thanksgiving!
  • Melanie
I did all this in one transaction. There were some ladies at the other register doing multiple transactions. I hardly ever do more than one. If I do, it is when the cashier invites me to, or if there is no one in line or in sight.
  • melissa
anybody else have the degree Q that says, buy 2 and get $1.50 off?

is the deal still worth it with this coupon instead of the original $1.25 off 1?
  • pharmSCgirl
I think it all depends on how many ECBs you are starting off with. I had that coupon but it's not worth using it b/c you will only get $4 ECB back even if you buy 2 (limit 1 per household). If you have plenty of ECBs then you could go ahead and get it but I wouldn't use that coupon and you are going to get that ECBs back.
  • melissa
i got the $5 off $30 as well. but am i super new at doing cvs.

i have $5 in ecb, plus that new coupon.

can somebody super nice tell me how to maximize? i want to do jenny's #1-#6 as i already purchased the contact solution and diapers.
  • pharmSCgirl
Has anyone had a problem using the $5 off of $30 coupon from the medicare quiz?
  • Christine
I had a problem using it. Cashier could not figure out why it kept on beeping so she called in the manager and the manager had to manually push it thru.
  • chris
we got denied on that coupon as well and our manager wouldnt push it though manually, oh well still got a lot of stuff for basically nothing
  • Sue
I got an email, too. And it included a $5 off $30 coupon! Re-working my scenarios.
  • Amy
How does one sign up for the coupon emails. I get the cvs.com emails but it always seems to just be for purchases on line. I get the photo emails too. I never get emails about $/$$.
  • pharmSCgirl
I just checked my e-mail and I got one too! I'm excited and I too have to re-work my scenarios. This could be challenging b/c I want to get all the free deals plus some of the other ones. I do have about $24 in ECBs saved up for my card and my boyfriend has $14 in ECBs. Good luck everyone!
  • Stephanie B.
Just an FYI - I noticed that there was a $3 coupon on the UPromise website for the Bic Soleil razors when you buy 2. I assume that if you have your CVS Extra Care card linked to your UPromise account you would get credit for this. That would make it a profit of $3 after coupons and ECB's!
  • Sheila
Anyone out there tech-savy? I have a mac computer and an HP printer. And, I am not the most tech-savy person :) This afternoon I was printing some coupons, getting ready for my CVS and Walgreens runs tomorrow and this is the error that came out of no-where: "Opening Printer Connection Failed: Unable to open the printer connection. Please check your printer connections and check for printer errors." There are no errors that I can find, and I don't know what to do? I can't print my lists or my coupons!!! If anyone can help me, I would greatly appreciate it!
  • pharmSCgirl
Yeah I was wondering when the deals actually started. I think I might call the 24 hour store in town and ask.
  • weslie
I just called my 24 hr store and they are starting tonight at midnight!
  • pharmSCgirl
I just called my local 24 hour store and the guy was super nice and said that the deals start at 2 am. I really want to go but I'm not going out that late by myself. Maybe in the morning.
  • melissa thornton
I spoke tocorporate and they told me that the black friday deals actually start friday.

but then why does the ad say dont wait until friday, shop thursday?

does cvs seriously not know their own rules???
  • meghan
I called my CVS to ask, and I called 2 times today, and they said the sale starts tomorrow when the store opens.
  • Amy
That's weird. I just got an email showing the free after ECB deals saying "Thursday, Friday, and Saturday" at the top.
  • Tina
So can we get the black Friday deals starting Thanksgiving morning then? I dont see that posted anywhere, am I missing it?
  • meghan
ONE MORE QUESTION....I see the Herbal Essence is 2.99 each....I have a coupon for a Free Herbal Essence AND I have the coupon for B1 Herbal Essence, get a Free styler product. If I buy 1 shampoo and 1 hair spray, can I use the FREE Herbal Ess q for the shampoo and the B1 get a free styler product for the hair spray???

I am new to CVSing and want to start tomorrow, so I'm trying to come up with the best scenarios to get me started. Thanks!!!
  • ZJ
I did and was able to get both free! I went at 9:30 this morning and had the entire store to myself! lol I think everyone was at the mall! :)
  • Rebecca
Does the Huggies total have to be $20 after coupons used? I am sure that my total will be over $20, but I am starting with one ECB and have a lot of huggies coupons - in what order should I use them to get the best deal?
  • Jenny
It is $20 before coupons and ECBs.
  • kelli
is everyone else excited about tomorrow? :) I'm still trying to work out my plan.
  • Jamie
I just made a wild hectic dash to CVS to use $10 in ECB that expired today (and I had forgotten about it).... CVS closed at 10:00pm, I arrived there a little after 9:00pm, and left at 10:05pm (the manager and cashier walked out behind me, locked the doors, and left)....

Anyway, I am SUPER EXCITED because...................
    I SPENT: $4.50
    I SAVED: $65.72...(YES! $65.72)
Plus I got $8.99 in ECB back!!!!
This was one of my most "savings trip".. and I loved the feeling I had and the look on the cashiers face when I walked out :)
Thanks Jenny for showing us how to save so much money every week!! :)
  • meghan
I am new to the CVS ECB thing. I do want to start it this week though. How much is a good amount to have on 1 ECB? I am thinking about getting the diapers, wipes, and lotion. I do have a $5 off $30 q, along with the q's for the diapers, wipes, and lotion. I think that would give me 12.99 ECB...is this too much to carry over? Not sure that I'll use it for anything else this week....any help or advice would be awesome. Thanks!
